IV. Pathophysiology: Theoretical based

Modifiable risk factors:

Nutrition: malnourished people, particularly Vit A deficiency

Immunization: people who have not received the proper vaccination series

Non-modifiable risk factors:

Age: 6-moths- 3 years

Sex: females

Season: outbreaks in the summer season (Philippines)

Overcrowding

Etiologic agent:

Paramyxovirus

6-19 days of intubation period

Transmitted via respiratory droplets

The respiratory epithelium becomes infected

Prodromal (pre-eruptive) period of 2-4 days

Replication in the regional lymph nodes

Infection of the endothelial cells

Enanthem (Koplik’s spots)

Infection of the epithelial cells

Cutaneous eruption of measles (maculopapular rashes)

Eruptive phase (4th-7th day)

s/sx: fever, cough, coryza (runny nose), conjunctivitis, photophobia

viremia

Complications:

Diarrhea

Pneumonia

Otitis media

Reactivation of latent TB

Pyogenic infections and PEM

Subacute, scelorotic PAN-encephalitis

Febrile convulsions

Vitamin A deficiency
