Modifiable risk factors:
Nutrition: malnourished people, particularly Vit A deficiency
Immunization: people who have not received the proper vaccination series
Non-modifiable risk factors:
Age: 6-moths- 3 years
Sex: females
Season: outbreaks in the summer season (Philippines)
Overcrowding
Etiologic agent:
Paramyxovirus
6-19 days of intubation period
Transmitted via respiratory droplets
The respiratory epithelium becomes infected
Prodromal (pre-eruptive) period of 2-4 days
Replication in the regional lymph nodes
Infection of the endothelial cells
Enanthem (Koplik’s spots)
Infection of the epithelial cells
Cutaneous eruption of measles (maculopapular rashes)
Eruptive phase (4th-7th day)
s/sx: fever, cough, coryza (runny nose), conjunctivitis, photophobia
viremia
Complications:
Diarrhea
Pneumonia
Otitis media
Reactivation of latent TB
Pyogenic infections and PEM
Subacute, scelorotic PAN-encephalitis
Febrile convulsions
Vitamin A deficiency
