PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Brothers and Sisters, This weekend we celebrate our Independence as a nation. So often we refer to the holiday as the Fourth of July, that we forget it’s about our independence. Rereading the Declaration of Independence really moved my heart and my soul. Think for a moment of these words, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. The framers of this declaration were bold. To call out the King in such a way to sever ties with him and the monarchy was no easy feat. Again, think of these words, the history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. And then they name the facts that brought them to the conclusion. I have printed here parts of the Declaration of Independence, the opening lines of the Constitution of the United States and a song that is often sung on the 4th of July. I would encourage you to read on and not stop with just these words. Go back and ponder these words that established a nation as great as ours. Happy Fourth of July! Happy Independence Day! In Congress, July 4, 1776. The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

The Constitution of the United States: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquillity, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

My country, 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims' pride, From ev'ry mountainside Let freedom ring! My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills, Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees Sweet freedom's song; Let mortal tongues awake; Let all that breathe partake; Let rocks their silence break, The sound prolong. Our fathers' God to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing. Long may our land be bright, With freedom's holy light, Protect us by Thy might, Great God our King!

Sunday, Jul 05, 2020 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME God’s here, in the flesh A small boy resisted saying good night. His father told him, “Don’t worry, I’m in the next room.” The child pleaded, “But I need you here.” Taking a religious tactic, the father said, “You’re not alone; God is always with you.” Placing both hands on his father’s cheeks and drawing his face level to his own, his son replied: “But God don’t have no skin.” The child perceived that a faceless, invisible God is not of much help on those dark nights when we need a friend near. But God does have skin in the game. The divine Presence is as close as our concern for each other.

TODAY'S READINGS: Zechariah 9:9-10; Romans 8:9, 11-13; Matthew 11:25-30 (100). “Although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones.”

Monday, Jul 06, 2020 MEMORIAL OF MARIA GORETTI, VIRGIN, MARTYR The power of "I forgive you" As 11-year-old Maria Goretti lay dying after being stabbed for rebuffing the sexual advances of a 21-year-old man who lived on her farm, she forgave her attacker. That act alone is shocking enough. But her attacker was so affected by her forgiveness that he repented in prison, prayed to her every day, sought the forgiveness of her mother, attended Maria’s canonization in 1950, and became a lay brother. Makes it pretty hard for anyone to justify a grudge, much less retribution.

Tuesday, Jul 07, 2020 Wonders never cease The Seven Modern Wonders of the World were identified on this day in 2007, counterparts to the seven ancient wonders that predate the earthly life of Jesus. Two of these modern monuments—the Colosseum in Rome and Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro—could be the bookends to Christian history. The Colosseum, symbolic of Roman emperors’ power, was where early martyrs died while Christianity was outlawed. The colossal Redeemer statue celebrates Christ's ongoing presence in the world. It was used recently to honor pandemic healthcare workers. It proclaims that Christ’s love endures now as it did in the time of the Colosseum. Proclaim that love in your own life.

Wednesday, Jul 08, 2020 The cure for what ails us Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven sacraments of the church. In its pre-Vatican II life, this sacrament was called Extreme Unction and was reserved for the time of death. Now the church invites all who are seriously sick or experiencing the challenges of advanced age to receive the grace of this sacrament. Celebrated at home, in a church, or in a healthcare facility, often in the presence of loved ones, this sacrament offers those who are sick the peace, strength, and courage of the Lord who himself knew the pain of human suffering. Draw on

God's healing powers and encourage others to do so as well. COVID-19 has complicated pastoral visits, especially in medical facilities, so consult with a priest or chaplain about the wisest course of action.

Thursday, Jul 09, 2020 MEMORIAL OF AUGUSTINE ZHAO RONG, PRIEST, AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Faithful unto death When Christianity first emerged, members of the early church were often persecuted and even killed. Although the targeting of Christians has waxed and waned over the centuries—depending on the political powers and their attitude toward the faith—Christians continue to suffer at the hands of civil authorities and religious extremists, as did the subjects of today’s optional memorial, Augustine Zhao Rong and companions, who were martyred in China over a 300-year period. In honor of these Christian martyrs, take a moment today to learn more about interreligious cooperation, an ongoing effort the Holy Father has championed.

Friday, Jul 10, 2020 Don’t get comfortable As Christians, we not only face the hardships of daily existence, but also the challenges arising from living out a faith that demands justice. When it comes to justice, there is no comfort zone for Christians to sit back and watch. The gospels and the long tradition of Catholic social teaching call us to more. No matter your gender, race, or ethnicity, you must be willing to act: to challenge the racist or sexist joke, to support minority-owned businesses, to see yourself in the "other." Catholic leaders are now especially to stand with people of color who are disproportionately infected with and dying from COVID-19. How are you being called beyond your comfort zone?

Saturday, Jul 11, 2020 MEMORIAL OF BENEDICT, ABBOT A rule to live by Saint Benedict’s wisdom has guided people for centuries. Among the gems of his Rule: The search for security, wealth, and salvation is futile. Instead, treat each hour as a gift. See in each day reasons for joy. Reverence the tools of work like the vessels of the altar. Small, daily brush strokes create the stunning canvas. Important decisions should be made with consultation, gaining the richness of different viewpoints. Learn from relationships not to take oneself too seriously. Know the value of silence. Choose one of these guidelines to follow each day for a week. Then start again!

Church doors will open 20 minutes prior to the Liturgical Celebration. Plan for delays.

The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday is dispensed:

• If you are able to attend Mass on a weekday, please consider doing so to leave Sunday for those who are unable to attend during the week.

• Those who are at risk due to age or medical conditions are urged to stay at home and join in the Mass through live streaming.

• Those who are ill are to remain at home.

CATECHISTS NEEDED Plans for Early Childhood and Elementary Faith Formation on campus this Fall will have limited capacity with necessary protocols. There is also a Home Study option available to accommodate families who are not ready for the on-campus option. In the event of another COVID shutdown, all families will rely on the Home Study option. Faith Formation Registration is now online. Visit silcc.org/formation The on-campus option requires volunteer Catechists and Catechist Assistants for Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday class times. If you love children, are interested in sharing the Catholic Faith, can commit to prepared lesson planning and work toward your continuing education, you are qualified to volunteer. Este fin de semana celebramos nuestra Independencia como nación. Con mucha frecuencia nos referimos a la celebración como el 4 de julio, que olvidamos que se trata de nuestra Independencia. Volver a leer la Declaración de la Independencia realmente conmovió mi corazón y mi alma. Recapacite por un mo-mento en estas palabras, que cada vez que cualquier Forma de Gobierno se vuelve destructiva de estos fines, es el Derecho del Pueblo alterarlo o abolirlo, e instituir un nuevo Gobierno, estableciendo sus principios y organizando sus poderes. En tal forma, en cuanto a ellos, parecerá más probable que afecten su Seguridad y Felicidad. Los redactores de esta declaración fueron audaces. Llamar al Rey de tal manera que rompa los lazos con él y la monarquía no fue tarea fácil. Su padre le dijo, “No te preocupes, estoy en el cuarto de al lado.” El niño alegaba, “Pero te necesito aquí.” Tomando una táctica religiosa, el padre dijo, “No estás solo; Dios está siempre contigo.” Poniendo ambas manos en las mejillas de su padre y acercando su cara a la suya, su hijo respondió: “Pero Dios no tiene piel.” El niño percibía que un Dios sin cara, invisible, no es mucha ayuda en esas noches oscuras cuando necesitamos tener cerca un amigo.
