Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His St. Anthony Family. A Holy Community through Holy Communion! Your brother in Jesus, Father John

The “Saint of the Week” is from the “Blessed Among Us” features that are written by Robert Ellsberg, author of numerous books, including the newly released Blessed Among Us.

Joke of the Week

Saint of the Week St. Jeanne Jugan

Founder, Little Sisters of the Poor (1792 - 1879) Jeanne Jugan was born to a poor family in Brit-tany, France. She spent most of her life in me-nial service. Poor as she was, however, she be-lieved that God intended her for some larger purpose. In 1837, along with two companions, she rented an attic apartment and formed an informal community of prayer. They supported themselves by doing laundry, while devoting their free time to catechizing children and assist-ing the poor. Eventually, with new companions, Jeanne formed a religious association. Along with vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, she added a fourth vow of hospitality. They called them-selves Little Sisters of the Poor. At this point, in a strange twist, Jeanne’s spiritual director stepped in to claim authority over the group. By the time the community re-ceived papal approval in 1852, there were five hundred sisters in the congregation, and yet Jeanne’s role as founder had been completely obscured. She spent the last twenty-seven years of her life supervising the manual work of the postulants. Only after her death was her true role recovered. Jeanne died on August 29, 1879. Her last words were “Eternal Father, open your gates today to the most miserable of your children, but one who greatly longs to see you.” She was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. “My little ones, never forget that the poor are Our Lord; in caring for the poor say to yourself: This is for my Jesus-what a great grace!” —St. Jeanne Jugan

An acquaintance of mine who is a physician told this story about her then 4 year old daughter. On the way to preschool, the doctor had left her stethoscope on the car seat, and her little girl picked it up and began playing with it. “Be still, my heart.” thought my friend, “my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps!”

Then the child spoke into the instrument: “Welcome to McDonald’s. May I take your order?”

Special Memorial Mass on November 2nd

(All Souls Day) Each year, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of All Souls Day on November 2nd. It is a day when we remember all those who have gone before us who are on their way to their final reward. It is also a day to celebrate their lives and pray for their souls. On Thursday November 2nd, we will have a memorial at 7:00pm for the parishioners and the loved ones of parishioners who died from November 2016 to October 2017. Please feel free to invite other family members and friends to attend with you. We have sent invi-tations to all those people for whom we have records. If you did not get an invitation, please contact Jackie at the rectory office to give her the information. Jackie can be reached by calling 636-677-4868 x100 or you can e-mail her at [email protected]. Please join us to celebrate the lives of these people who have moved on to their new lives in Christ. Please RSVP to the Rectory to confirm your attendance by noon on Monday, Oc-tober 30th.
