Pastoral Message Concerning Worship

First, I wish to thank God for blessing us greatly. You should be very

proud of the way we are changing people’s lives daily by feeding and heal-

ing neighbors both physically and spiritually. Given that, we are also sad-

dened by the fact that we cannot be in close contact as a community in

worship and fellowship at this time.

One of my daily concerns is the spiritual health of you. How do we meet

together without harming physically another? The Covid Action Team and

I are working very hard in determining from County, CDC, and ELCA rec-

ommendations what will be the safest way to introduce people to our facil-

ities. For the near future, we will continue to hold a drive-in worship in the

parking lot, provide a live Sunday Facebook feed with FM transmitted ser-

vice, in addition to a taped worship. The next step is being developed.

A communication for the next step will be communicated soon. In the

meantime, I encourage you to take advantage of the wealth of spiritual of-

ferings for all ages on our website, Facebook, the virtual VBS starting

soon, yoga in the ball park, Arts & Crafts series, Prayer Pillows, delivering

for the food ministry, painting rocks for our Peace Garden, and/or praying

for those daily listed in this newsletter. There is something truly available

for all ages.

As you can see from this newsletter, we have not even come close to shut-

ting down for the virus. We have overcome all challenges in loving our

neighbors by the help of God and your support. I look forward to the mo-

Drive-in Worship

On Pentecost Sunday, May 31,

2020 at 9 AM, NHELC undertook

a historical moment by conducting

it’s first drive-in worship. The sun

was shining on the six students and

families affirming their baptism

during the Affirmation of Baptism/

Communion worship. Over 250

people witnessed and praised God

as we worshipped with traditional

and contemporary sacred music.

This historical moment was fol-

lowed by Trinity Sunday’s celebra-

tion of First Communion on June

7th. Four of our young members

took their first communion along

with their families.

A huge thank you to all the volun-

teers and staff who made this histor-

ical moment happen all in the name

of God. Thank you for all who do-

nated their trailer, scaffolding, con-

struction materials, labor and tent to

provide an excellent venue. Drive-

in and outdoor worship will contin-

ue until further notice at 9:00 AM.

Warmer weather permits congregation and friends of New Hanover

Lutheran Church to worship at the drive-in service on Sundays

at 9 AM in the church parking lot.

Thank you to

volunteers who

donated their time

and resources to

prepare for the

drive-in services.

VBS isn’t chased away by the

virus!

“Compassion Camp:

Be Loved, Be Kind, Be You”

Beginning Wednesday,

June 24th

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic,

this year’s VBS will be a little

different. The safety and well-

being of the children and pro-

gram volunteers are first and

foremost. So, NHELC’s 2020

VBS will be an online experi-

ence, accessible for you to ex-

perience in the safety and com-

fort of your home - and at a time

that works best for you. The

material is designed mainly for

K-5th graders but there will be

specific activities for preschool-

ers too. There is no fee. BUT

Page 3: Pastoral Message Concerning Worship Drive-in Worship24 Barbara Noecker, Brian Tracey, Christian Van Dyke 25 Ian Gross, Lincoln Noecker, Jessica Trout, Dan Van Dyke 26 Brianna Beitler,

access the materials. Access

will be through a password only

given to enrolled families. Reg-

istration is required because the

purchased material for this pro-

gram has copyright restrictions,

unlike the free resources provid-

ed through the family faith for-

mation the past few months.

To register for Compassion

Camp, go to the church’s web-

site at newhanoverloutheran.org.

Click on the Camp Compassion

link on the right-hand side of the

screen (under the red heart

logo). On the VBS info page,

you will see the three ways you

can register. It’s very easy! To

help with planning, please reg-

ister prior to June 19th. Ques-

tions? Contact Deacon Carol at

[email protected].

We’re still figuring out what

volunteer help will be needed;

this will be a work in progress!

Possible help may be for folks to

do simple videotape of reading

the story or acting in a skit.

Also, volunteers may be needed

to pull together some materials.

Watch for more information.

Thanks to those who have al-

ready volunteered their help.

We’re learning together this

year!

Enjoy nature by helping at the grove

Could you use some time outside your house? Some time in nature?

The Swamp Picnic Committee could use your help.

You’re invited to the Picnic Grove on Tuesday, June 16th, from 6:00 -

8:00 PM and again on Wednesday, June 17th, from 9:00 AM -

2:00 PM, weather permitting.

A Swamp Picnic Committee member will be at the grove to let you

know what to do. We will be picking up sticks, raking leaves, pulling

weeds... all fun stuff!

If you are able to come, please:

* Bring a mask - you will only need to wear it if you are around

others.

* Bring tools you may need: rakes, tarps (to drag leaves to the back of

the grove), leaf blowers, weed whackers, work gloves, etc.

Water bottles and snacks will be provided.

Feel free to call or text Sally Sugita at 610-505-9682 if you have any

questions!

Synodical Online Conversation about Race

The SEPA Synod is hosting weekly online discussions based on the

book, America’s Original Sin, by Jim Wallis. The discussions are of-

fered for five Tuesdays. Although they started June 9th, it’s not too late

to sign up for upcoming discussions running through July 14th. Each

discussion is held 7 - 8:15 PM. Led by members of the Synod’s Anti-

racism Team, this program is offered at no cost. Participants can join

in one or more of the discussions. But, space is limited, so register by

sending an email to [email protected] with your name and contact

information. More information is located on the Southeastern PA Syn-

od Ministry Link (5/27/20 posting).
