~ ADVENT CALENDAR BOOKLET ~

All committees, Sunday School classes, and small groups are asked to submit activities scheduled for Advent for inclusion in the Advent Calendar booklet. Leave information in the church office ASAP. Some of last year’s entries were Maplemere Caroling, class/group bell-ringing for the Salvation Army, Angel Tree giving, and class/group holiday get-togethers.

~ ANGEL TREE ~

Our congregation will again participate in the Angel Tree project sponsored by the Salvation Army. The

tree will be located outside the church office on the 3rd floor around mid November. Names of the

children and parents along with ages, sizes, etc. will be on the tree. You are encouraged to select an angel

tag and purchase a gift. Please return the gift labeled (with the original angel tag) and unwrapped by

pm.

~ A THANK YOU FROM THE PRESCHOOL ~ The preschool is most thankful for the help of David Midlick and his fellow Scouts who recently worked on several projects around the preschool. David is completing requirements to achieve the Eagle Scout ranking. The boys hauled many 50 lb. bags of sand for three sandboxes. They also removed several pieces of worn out equipment from the playroom and hauled it away. We are most grateful for their muscle power and for David’s financial contribution. A job well done!

~ PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN ~

All women in the church are invited to participate in Circles along with the PW luncheons. Our next luncheon will be December 5th in the fellowship hall at 12:30 pm. (Please note there will not be a luncheon in November). David Steinquest, APSU Professor of Music Percussion, will arrange for APSU students to perform traditional holiday music and carols. The catered meal cost will be $9. Menu: .Baked ham with mashed potatoes, green bean bundles, dinner rolls, pecan pie, iced tea, lemonade and coffee. The Circles continue their monthly meetings. The Morning Circle meets Tuesday, November 1 at 10:00 am. The Night Circle meets Tuesday, November 8 at 7:00 pm. Both circles meet in the church library and are studying ―Confessing The Beatitudes‖ by author Margaret Aymer.

~ WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY ~

You are invited to join the group of 15-20 folks who gather for Bible study on Wednesday mornings each week. Please join us at 10:00 am in the church library!

~ CHILDREN’S CHOIRS ~ Children’s Choirs meet on Sunday mornings from 9:15-9:45. 4 yrs.-1st grade meet in the preschool music room on the 2nd floor. 2nd-6th grades meet in the adult choir room on the 4th floor. Newcomers are always welcome!

~ A NEW APPROACH FOR MEMORIAL FLOWERS ~

We take pride in delivering beautiful memorial flowers to our shut-ins at Christmas and Easter. After doing so for many years, however, many of the assisted living and nursing homes are refusing to take the poinsettias because some varieties are considered poisonous. Therefore, the Local Witness Committee has come up with a plan to make everyone happy (hopefully). Instead of buying or bringing the flowers for each season, you can send a Memorial donation to the Church designated for Memorial Poinsettias or Memorial Lilies. That money will be put in a new and separate fund marked for Memorial Flowers only. The names of the donors and those they want to honor will still be printed in the newsletter and church bulletins as always. Then, the committee will purchase the appropriate flowers for the season to decorate the Sanctuary and church entry. Any monies left over will be retained to maintain the interior garden and purchase new flowers in the next season. This has been approved by the Session. We look forward to seeing the plants being used and hope you can be comfortable with this new idea. The Local Witness Committee

Christmas Food Baskets will be packaged and delivered on Saturday, December 17, beginning at 9 a.m. This year we have revised the list of items in an attempt to provide healthier, easy-to-prepare foods. Also, we reviewed the prices, and the items to be donated cost about $10/per family. This list provides specific sizes which we used to figure costs, but other sizes are acceptable as we will prepare baskets for individuals as well as large families who are in great need! We consulted with a doctor and a nutritionist about the foods and have included a few of their comments to explain some of the changes.

Peanut butter (28 oz)

Jam (18 oz)

2 pkgs. macaroni (16 oz.)

Jam has more fruit, less sugars.

Walnuts (6 oz.)

Walnuts are a great source of DHA which is

good for mood, brain function, and heart

health.

5 cans beans (15 oz.) (pintos, navy, kidney, pork

n beans, black-eyed peas)

Dried plums in bag (10 oz.)

5 cans peaches (1 lb)

Raisins (9 oz)

Fruit with no sugar added or in lite

syrup provides better nutrition.

5 jars applesauce (50 oz)

Rice (5 lbs.)

Consider brown rice to add fiber, flavor,

and B-vitamins.

9 cans soup & 5 cans Vienna sausage

2 bags apples

4 cans green beans (14.5 oz)

5 cans meat (tuna, chicken, spam, etc.)

1 box corn flakes OR rice krispies

Cans with pull-tops are great for families

without can openers!

2 bags oranges & Raisins (9 oz.)

4 cans corn (15 oz)

Fresh, whole almonds (1 lb)

3 pkgs. Oatmeal

3 boxes cereal—rice krispies, cornflakes
