ABOUT OUR NEIGHBORSEdgewood Village is a housing community located at Tower Gardens Circle in East Lansing. In addition to many family apartments, there are 35 one-bedroom apart-ments for seniors and the physically impaired. The Edge-wood Village facilities also o" er residents an exercise room, meeting room and dining area, and computer lab supervised by an educator during after-school, evening and weekend hours. AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING Edgewood Village’s after-school program is of-fered from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the East Lansing schools aca-demic year. Tutors are asked to work with 1-2 children ages 6-18 on subjects based on the child’s needs and volunteer’s abilities. Tutors are asked to commit to one day per week.

COMPUTER LAB MONITORHelp students with basic computer questions and printing issues in Edgewood Village’s As-sisted Learning Computer Center.

TEACHING CLASSES Do you have a skill or knowledge of a cer-tain subject that you would like to share with others. Helpful topics of interest to residents of Edgewood Village might include cooking, nutrition, art, sewing, budgeting and acting among many others.

RECEPTIONISTS Volunteers are needed to help out at the Vil-lage Network Center from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mon-day through Wednesday or 4 to 5 p.m. on Fri-day one day or more each month.

FUN DAY AT CAMP PA-WA-PIEnjoy tons of fun, great friends and laughter from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 as we take over the YMCA’s Camp Pa-Wa-Pi for a day. There will be activities for every age, including a low-ropes challenge, a huge climbing tow-er, a 400-ft. zip line, nature hikes, a rappelling wall and more! Bring a sack lunch. Our day will conclude together with S’mores and songs around the camp$ re. Cost is $30 per family up to four, $5 for each additional member. Indi-vidual price is $10. HOW TO TALK TO A FRIEND IN GRIEF Each month, the Art for Charlie Foundation, in partnership with MattEpling.com and Max’s Race, presents a workshop at The Peoples Church to support families bereaved by the death of a child. The next session, “How to Talk to a Friend in Grief,” is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 7. Pastor Andrew Pomerville will be the facilitator. All are welcome to attend. A light sup-per is served. GREAT DECISIONS: ISLAMIC LAW IN THE ARAB WORLD

The Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions series con-tinues this fall as we host Dr. Mohammad Hassan Khalil, asso-ciate professor of religious studies, adjunct professor of law and interim director of the Muslim Studies Program at MSU, at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 in the Robertson Room. The author of “Islam and the Fate of Others: The Salvation Question” will discuss the origins and sources of Islamic law, its evolution, its modern manifestations, the development of Islamism and the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in modern times.

THURSDAYS WITH JESUS All women are welcome to join Thursdays With Jesus at 6:30 p.m each week in the Robertson Room. Their fall study is “Liv-ing Beyond Yourself: Exploring the Fruits of the Spirit.”

NEXT DROP-OFF: SMALL BATTERIES (FIRST SUNDAY)

The Peoples Church Recycling Program is a volunteer service to the members of our faith community. Items can be dropped o" near our sign in the Northwest Entrance. Please be sure to only drop o" items at this location on the Sundays that they are to be collected. It is di# cult for us to store all of the items we recycle. Also, clean and rinse the items you bring in. Soiled items will be discarded in the trash. Recycle many other items each day at our Recycling Center across from the Church O# ce.

LEAD GAMES ON WEDNESDAY NIGHTOur children’s program at Wednesday Night

Live! is in need of volunteers to run games from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Gymasium. WNL! continues to grow and we have found a need to divide children up by grade lev-el. Meaghan Gonzales will work with you on planning games or you are welcome to bring your own ideas. Children in grades K-2 will use the gym from 6:30 to 7 p.m. while children in grades 3-5 will partici-pate in our faith enrichment program on the third * oor. From 7 to 7:30, the children will switch places. Contact Meaghan at [email protected] if you are interested in helping to lead the fun.

SUNDAY SCHOOL & NURSERYChildren’s Christian Education needs vol-unteers for the Nursery or Sunday School teaching. The commitment is minimal and extremely rewarding. All the teaching ma-terial is provided and ready to go on Sun-day mornings. ACOLYTESChildren in 5th - 7th grades are invit-ed to serve as acolytes on the $ rst Sun-day of the month. The acolytes light the candles at the chancel table during the 10:30 a.m. worship service. ‘UNEXPECTED PLACES’: THE PEOPLES CHURCH HOSTS UCC ANNUAL STATE CONFERENCE OCTOBER 10 & 11

The Peoples Church is happy to host the 2014 Annual Meeting of the United Church of Christ Michigan Confer-ence on Oct. 10 and 11. A Friday evening worship service and presentation with the meeting’s keynote speaker, the Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber is open to the public. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the service begins at 7:30 p.m. Church members also are welcome to register to attend the entire conference, which includes 19 workshops o" ered during the two-day event. The Rev. Andrew Pomerville and Betsy Aho of The Peoples Church will lead a Friday workshop on ministering to young people. Conference registration is $35 per person for two days or $25 for one day only. Meals and childcare are provided. Registration is open through Oct. 1 at www.michucc.org.
