Pastor Bill’s Ramblings

We are in the season of Pentecost! Pentecost is often considered the birthday of the church and the start of the Christian growing cycle. So it is an apt description for June and July, a typical growing season in our lives.

Let’s look a bit at what happened on that Pentecost Day, that day of celebration of first fruits. Jesus had already ascended to heaven. As good Jewish believers, his followers were gathered for the celebration. They had just elected their twelfth apostle. Little did they know what was about to happen.

According to Acts a great and mighty sound filled the house where they were sitting, like the sound of a roaring wind. We’ve heard winds like that here, whether they are straight-line or tornadic. And that sound was confined to the house. Along with it fire-like tongues rested on everyone there, filling them with the Holy Spirit. All those in that house began to speak in different languages. What a babble that must have sounded like!

The sound was so great that visiting pilgrims from all over the known world came to see what the commotion was all about. What they heard was the good news, the news about the power of God, but in each one’s native language. All these visitors were confused, and even amazed at what was happening. And they believed.

The direction shown us that Pentecost Day is the key to our job now. What is really important is that the sound that began in that house moved outward. The Holy Spirit’s message was delivered outside the house to the point that 3000 were added to their numbers that day alone.

The Pentecost direction has always been looking outward from ourselves. God has been trying to kick us out of that house where Jesus’ followers had gathered for worship and fellowship. That is, kicking us out for the purpose of making new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our job is to plant the seeds of God’s love, the message of God’s forgiveness and reconciliation, wherever we go, wherever we are, with whomever we meet. God didn’t make distinctions among people then, so neither should we. Great things happen when we step outside our comfort zones!

Once we plant the seeds by the way we live and work, God will grow them through the Holy Spirit’s power. I trust God for that. This is God’s gift to us, that we can look out from ourselves to see possibilities through God’s eyes.

Blessings to all who read this.

Stay Connected this Summer!

Summer often means vacations, camping, family gatherings, ballgames and other sports, or otherwise being away from your home church. Did you know that the UMC has a handy tool to help you find a local United Methodist Church, where ever in the world you are?

Go to www.umc.org/find-a-church/search, and enter a city & state or zip code. It will show you a map with all of the UMC’s in that area. Click on the symbol for each to learn more - most will give you a link to their web page! You can also contact our church office and we can help before your trip.

For those on facebook, please share your adventures! Snap a picture while you’re visiting other churches - or any other vacation or summer happenings you’d like to share. Please either tag CUMC on your own post (@Centralia United Methodist Church), or post it to our church page. You could also email photos back to us. Also, be sure to pick up the latest edition of The Upper Room daily devotional booklet before you leave. Current issue out now is May-June, then the July-August edition will be available in late June. Have a great summer!

School is out and even though the calendar doesn’t show it, the weather says it is summer. If your household is anything like ours, you try to fit as many events and trips as possible into your busy schedule while school is not in session. Many of us enjoy spending time camping, hiking, boating and other outdoor activities which allows us to enjoy the beauty of God’s creations.

While it is important to spend time with family, it is also important to remember the church. Summer is a busy time for the church as well. Financial obligations continue. In reviewing our giving and attendance through the end of May, some things caught my attention, and I want to bring them to your attention as well. You may recall that last year was a stellar year for the church in many ways, including our giving. Looking back at this time last year, our giving was at $101,000 and our revenues were exceeding our budgeted expenses.

This year, our giving is at almost $92,000 and our year to date budgeted expenses are about $99,000. Historically, our giving in the summer months slows down, as does attendance due to family activities away from home.

As we head into summer, I ask that you prayerfully consider how we can continue our giving, and not fall further behind our budget. We should also commit ourselves to attending services as much as possible. It takes all of us to make the Church.

In Christ, Nathan Chitwood, Stewardship Team

Highlights from the May Administrative Board meeting - Sam Jennings, Chair:

Nathan Chitwood provided a detailed update on the Montana Mission Trip, which will include 20 children and youth and 26 adults for the dates June 29 through July 7, 2018. Final plans are coming together - please keep in prayer!

Pastor Bill is working to update our Safe Sanctuary policy. FINANCE - Keith Schnarre, Chair: Overall, we are financially in good shape. However, giving has been down a bit, and we are currently about $8,000

short of making budget, largely due to increased utility costs this winter. STAFF/PASTOR PARISH RELATIONS (Personnel) - Drew Hahn, Chair: Discussion of the Conference moving up the dates for Pastor Evaluations, and how that might affect Ad. Board meeting

dates. Schedule to remain the same for now (Board meets in January, March, May, July, August, September, October and November, with special meetings called as needed).

Pastor Bill & Russ Greene, Lay Member, are preparing to attend Missouri Annual Conference June 7th-10th. TRUSTEES (Building & Grounds) - Steve Hahn, Chair: Stephen’s Heating & Air checked the sanctuary air conditioner unit, refilled with freon, and installed locks. The bus, for which we could not maintain qualified drivers, has been sold. Storage closet in the middle school classroom has been completed. More bids have been received for replacing the old carpeting in the gathering area, hallways and office;

a bid from Dave Grigg’s Flooring was approved and the new carpeting will be installed in late July. Working with the city on the ditches at the parsonage.

The “Brain Trust” Trustees Advisory Group will meet on June 19th at 7:00pm. (contact: Steve Hahn at 573.682.7654)

The next Board Meeting will be July 17th at 7:00pm. (contact: Sam Jennings at 573.682.2169)
