the broad range of courses offered by the College

and also about the fantastic opportunities to get

involved in the wider life of the College community.

Paston is a Sixth Form College. It’s not a school sixth form

or free school and it’s not an FE College. We are the 16–18

specialists with a long tradition of outstanding results, with

all of our students going on to the best University courses

or employment. Sixth Form Colleges provide the best sixth

form education: academically, they perform better than

school sixth forms, free school sixth forms or FE Colleges.

Based on results, Paston is one of the top Sixth Form

Colleges nationally.

When to ApplyGet your application in as soon as you can. Interviews begin in the October half term immediately after our Taster Day and an early interview gives you the best chance of a firm offer of a place to study the courses you want.

We aim to interview almost everyone who applies to the College and you will be asked to bring to your interview a copy of your latest full school report, your predicted GCSE grades and details of your attendance.

Your Induction Day

We will write to you in May with the date of your induction day, INTRO Paston. This is not an open day, but is exclusively for students who have been offered a place. INTRO days take place on 4th and 5th July 2016. You will have the opportunity to meet your teachers and other students who are likely to be on the same courses with you and you will start your courses.

How Do I Complete My Application?

Online applications open on 1st September 2015. If you are applying online through our website, you will need to insert an email address and password to log in. You will then need to complete the details and submit your application.

If you are applying through ‘helpyouchoose’, your school will introduce you to the website and help you with your application.

The interviewAll applicants will be required to attend an interview. Once we have received your application we will write to you with a day and time for your interview. If you are unable to make it on the day and time allocated please contact Jodie Rice, Admissions Officer, so that we can rearrange it.

At the interview we will discuss what you can see yourself doing in the future and will help and advise you on the right programme of study to help you achieve your goals.

Enrolment

We will write to you in June with your enrolment appointment. This will take place at the end of August.

What happens if I do not get the grades I need? If your results were not what you expected, you can contact the College to discuss your options on GCSE results day. Call 01692 402334 to talk to staff and get advice.

FinancialSupport

Paston has a Bursary fund to provide specific financial support for travel to College, materials charge/books and equipment (including computers), college trips and university open days or interviews for students from low income families.

The threshold for the Bursary is a family income of less than £25,000 per year.

Students in care, ‘care leavers’ and some students living independently receive a Guaranteed Bursary of £1,200 per year.

Application forms for the Bursary are on our website and will be sent out with students’ enrolment appointment letters in June/July.

For students likely to achieve a minimum of 6 A* grades at GCSE there is the Sir William Paston Scholarship provided by the Paston Foundation to the sum of £500. Application forms can be downloaded from our website.

We only teach 16–19 year olds, so provided you are aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August in the year when you begin your programme of study, you DO NOT pay tuition fees. Students do pay an optional Materials Charge, currently £60.00 which

covers the cost of the loan of books and study materials plus a £25.00 deposit which is refundable when you complete your course provided you have returned all of your books to us.

1Find out about the different options available to you so that you can decide which is best for you. There are significant differences between Sixth Form Colleges, school sixth forms and FE Colleges and you should visit open days/taster days.

2Look at examination results and ask where students go onto after study? What proportion go to university and which universities do they go to; what sorts of jobs/careers do they take?

In year 11 you have two key jobs: to do as well as you possibly can in your GCSEs and to choose what to do and where to go after your GCSEs. Don’t panic – there’s a lot of help available to you. Here are just a few tips:

3 Talk to current and past students about their experiences and find out what they really enjoyed about their Sixth Form College, school or FE College.

4Can you do the courses you want in the combination you want them? Check what courses actually ran this year against what was offered in the Prospectus. Can your combination of courses be guaranteed?

5 What GCSE grades do you need for your chosen institution and the courses you want to take?

6 What else is available –are there clubs and societies – sport, performance, volunteering, visits, trips?

7 Assess how helpful staff are. What specialist services are available e.g. university support, Oxford and Cambridge entry, specialist tutors.

8 How easy is transport? Investigate your particular transport arrangements.

We believe that every young person should be able to study at a Sixth Form College, if they want to and it is right for them. So we are serious about transport and do all we can to make it easy to travel to study at the College.

North Walsham is well served by both

buses and the railway – North Walsham

station is a few minutes’ walk from

the College.

Students are encouraged to take

advantage of the Norfolk County Council

(NCC) Post 16 Transport Scheme

(www.norfolk.gov.uk/post16transport)

and any opportunities for reduced rail

fares linked to Greater Anglia’s 16+/

Scholar tickets which may be cheaper

than the NCC subsidised rate, particularly

from stations on the Norwich to

Sheringham line.

There is free travel for students who

qualify for the 16-19 Bursary (gross family

income of £25,000 or less per year)

irrespective of where you live, subject

to Bursary terms and conditions (up to a

limit of £645 per year).

Transport to Paston is both convenient andaffordable

We encourage students from outside the ‘core’ area

to apply and provide substantial financial support to

make this affordable. The College will provide a subsidy

of £150 per year for applications outside the core area

(up to £645 for Bursary students). We have a large and

growing number of students travelling to Paston from a

wide range of destinations throughout Norfolk.

Travel from North Norwich, Acle, Flegg and

Sheringham/Holt areas is currently organised through

Norfolk County Council. A College subsidy of up to £150

is available for travel from these areas. Travel to Paston

from Norwich and beyond is easy with Greater Anglia’s

16+ or Scholar’s tickets. As an example the current

price (May 2015) for a 16+ ticket from Norwich to North

Walsham is £613.50 per year (or £225 per term), from

Salhouse £162.30 and Sheringham £130.60 per term.

A Scholar’s ticket for travel from the wider area beyond

Norwich is £700 per year.

Please note all the information applies to 2015-16 only

and will be reviewed for 2016-17 in line with

NCC changes.

the ‘core’ areaThe core route area includes, for example, East

Runton, Cromer, Aylsham, Stalham, Wroxham/

Hoveton – see map on County Council or

this area is organised by Norfolk County Council

convenient and comfortable. Again, please

check rates linked to Greater Anglia’s Scholar

Getting to Paston Getting to Paston is easy and we want to help you as much as we can. You can get to Paston in many ways: walk, bike, moped, car, taxi, bus or train. We have designated places for your bike and a student car park for those who wish to drive or moped in. In most cases you will be travelling by bus or train. Students/parents can complete an application for the Bursary for

travel assistance prior to enrolment.

At Paston you will have a more flexible approach to learning outside the classroom and free time – this approach will help prepare you for how university life operates. We offer a range of clubs and societies including sports, creative arts, volunteering,

Duke of Edinburgh and work experience. You will also have a Personal Tutor, who is always available for guidance and will complete a weekly tutorial with you.

As a bridge between school and university or employment, about 25% of your time each week is not timetabled, leaving you to decide how to use this time. There will be study to do, but equally you may go swimming, socialise in the Student Centre or do some shopping; these choices are all part of the transition from school pupil to college student.

Main Studies

Three or four A–levels or equivalent BTEC Diploma courses, depending on your GCSE grades. You will be expected to complete homework and independent study tasks in your supervised study sessions and outside class time.

Clubs and Societies On Wednesday afternoons and lunchtimes you will have many opportunities to take part in clubs and societies including sports, creative arts, volunteering and work experience. These will help you to achieve the Paston Employability Skills Award – PESA (see page 34).

Tutorial You will have a weekly tutorial with a personal tutor who is expert in advising and supporting 16–18 year old students and they will always be available to you for guidance:–

• Settling into College, monitoring your progress and agreeing personal targets.

• Listening to your ideas and suggestions and helping you resolve any issues.

• Making university applications and helping you to understand the career opportunities available to you.

Study Sessions and Lunch Time Improvement Sessions To help you organise your work and

research, you will have timetabled sessions

in the College’s Study Centres. There are

also 30 minute lunch time ‘improvement’

sessions for all subjects held during the

lunch hour; your teacher will guide you.

Learning “out of the classroom”

Paston has a campus-wide network all of which is WiFi.

Our Virtual Learning Environment is Moodle2 and is

available both in College and outside. Additional work

and research outside the classroom is encouraged by

all our departments and is one of the reasons for our

outstanding results. Students are also encouraged to

bring their own laptops, netbooks or tablets.

Your Own TimePaston is a bridge between school anduniversity or employment. About 25% of your time each week is not timetabled and you decide how to use this time. You will always have plenty of work to do, so you will spend some time working on homework and coursework tasks in the Library or Study Centre. Equally, you may go swimming or to the fitness centre gym, socialise in the Student Centre or our café, do some shopping – or even decide to come into Paston late or leave early if you don’t have a lesson. Making these choices is all part of the transition from school pupil tocollege student.

Learning Support All students joining Paston can be assessed for dyslexia

and other specific learning difficulties for which we can

then provide support through our Learning Centre.

Staff in the centre offer help in a number of areas which

supports your needs and enables you to get the most

out of your studies, including time management, essay

writing and revision skills.

I have really enjoyed studying my four chosen subjects

at Paston. I have been so well supported by my

teachers throughout my first year as they help me to

achieve my potential. My timetable is very flexible as

it has allowed me enough time for home and private

The course is great, there is a lot more practical which I like

but the coursework is so interesting. Paston has given me the

College FacilitiesBuilding for the FutureSince 2013 Paston has successfully gained £4m in government improvement funds. Students now benefit from the new Student Services, Study Centres, industrial specification science labs and the newly refurbished Art and Theatre facility. These new buildings are a great environment for learning and inspiring creativity.

New Art and Theatre FacilityDue to the College’s outstanding reputation in Art and Drama the Education Funding Agency awarded the College £1.5m. With increased numbers of students applying to study Art, Photography, Graphic Communication, Textiles and increasingly ambitious productions, such as Alice in Wonderland and The Tempest, by the prestigious Paston ‘Far East Theatre Company’, the College has benefited from a new theatre and new studios for all of the art based subjects, a new dark room and an IT area.

The College has outstanding results in the sciences and many students go on to study Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and other science related courses at Oxbridge or top Russell Group universities.The Scarburgh Science Centre was opened in December 2013 by Dr Steve Rawsthorne of the John Innes Centre in Norwich. 28 Life at Paston | Paston Sixth Form College

Our Student Centre opened in June

2013 following our purchase and

redevelopment of the former Norfolk

County Council office adjacent to

our Lawns site. The Centre provides

adaptable student social space for

when you want to relax and is also the

base for the Student Services team

which provides our students with

all of their information, advice and

guidance. They spend a considerable

amount of time supporting our

students onto university courses and

into employment.

A new Study Centre has been developed in the

old Student Services Centre; it comprises of

study areas with PCs and zones for laptops and

tablets to accommodate over 100 students.

To support the area, the College has invested

in a new cloud based WiFi system which allows

students to bring in their own devices and

access all of our IT learning systems. This is an

essential component of success at A–level and it

provides good study skills practice for university.

Paston has doubled the size of our student café

since it opened in 2010. It was an immediate hit

with students, competing on price and quality

with coffee and food outlets in the town, in

a comfortable and modern environment. The

proprietors, Kevin and Anne Chamberlin used

to cater on movie film sets, so there is a film set

vibe with lots of signed images on the wall from

stars like Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Mila Kunis

to name a few.

The Victory Fitness Centre is

located just a short walk from

Paston and boasts fantastic

facilities including a pool,

gym and very good fitness

classes such as body pump,

yoga and spinning. The Centre

offers a reduced membership

fee to Paston students.

Our newly extended library has a

large collection of resources to help

students successfully complete their

college course. Books, journals,

reference materials, CD–ROMs,

videos, and DVDs are all available

to borrow or consult. All current

students are automatically members

of the library. The book collection

of nearly 13,000 titles covers all

curriculum areas. Most items are

available to borrow. We also have a

good fiction section, containing both

classic and up–to–date titles. There

are journals relating to all subject

areas, and we currently take in excess

of 30 titles.

Duke ofEdinburghSince September Paston Sixth Form College has been an accredited centre for running the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The DofE is a leading youth Charity giving all young people aged 14-24 the chance to develop skills for life and work, fulfil their potential and have a brighter future. At Paston we are giving our young people the opportunity to complete their Silver Award and then start their Gold. Alternatively a young person can start their award as a direct Gold candidate. The award consists of 4 sections; physical,

volunteering, skills and an expedition. Gold candidates also complete a residential too. It takes a minimum of 6-12 months to complete the silver and a minimum of 12-18 months to finish the gold, so a young person should be able to complete

either award during their time as a student here. a student A completed DofE award is highly regarded by universities as it shows a strong level of commitment, determination and great team work. By completing the DofE you'll be learning new skills, making a difference in your local community, challenging yourself and finding hidden talents!

This year we have a number of students working towards their silver or gold award. In the Easter holidays 3 students, Freya Boswell, Laura Clabon and Pippa Waite (gold award), travelled to the south of the county to complete a practice expedition. They had to prove they were competent navigators by planning and completing a strenuous hike while carrying a 65 litre rucksack, cook over a tangier and pitch camp. Pippa was planning her route for her gold expedition to Snowdonia. Most importantly each student was working with a team of other candidates they had never met before.

Other students are currently working on their activities. We have students completing activities as wide ranging as; working towards their dancing or music grading, volunteering with Cub Scouts, environmental management. The choice is endless!

There are many pathways open to you once your time at Paston is complete. Many students see Paston as the first step to university. Our staff are experts in advising

you about university, what’s available and where, the grades you need and how to get them. The class of 2015 secured places at 80 universities across the UK including Oxford and Cambridge.

Employment based training is also available, with many businesses offering apprenticeships, giving you the opportunity to earn a wage whilst gaining experience in job-specific skills. Apprentices receive relevant training and work towards nationally recognised qualifications.

Other students decide to take a GAP Year, giving themselves the opportunity to further develop their experiences before

continuing their education or seeking full time employment. GAP Years can be a mixture of work experience, voluntary work and travel to broaden their horizons.

Are You anA Grade Student?

The Scholarships are worth £500, paid over two years.

The Trustees of the Paston Foundation invite applications from year 11 students who are likely to achieve outstanding GCSEs in 2015/16 and then continue their studies at Paston Sixth Form College.

The Scholarships are designed to assist young people to ‘go the extra mile’ to travel to Paston and to help with the costs involved in preparing for study at a top university. They are awarded annually to the students who are best qualified on the basis of their GCSE results. Download an application pack from www.paston.ac.uk or request one from the College.

Sir WilliamPaston Scholarships

A+ is Paston’s ‘gifted and talented programme’. It is for high achieving students with at least A*A*A*AAAAA grades at GCSE, who are aiming for top courses in top universities. You will be offered a place on

the A+ Programme if you attain these grades – you do not have to apply.

A+ is a highly successful programme which has run for over ten years. A+ students are most likely to achieve A/A* grades at A-level. A+ is about stretch and challenge and so teachers expect students to read beyond the A-level syllabus and to be self-motivated and undertake extension work.

A+ helps students fine tune their academic skills at the highest level, through a programme of coaching and mentoring, visits to highly rated universities and preparation for the additional entrance exams required by some top courses, like the BMAT (or UKCAT) for Medicine or Veterinary Medicine, the LNAT for Law and the Thinking Skills Assessment for some Oxford and Cambridge courses. Paston OxbridgeProgramme

The Oxbridge Programme is an extension of the A+ programme. Paston sent its first students to Oxford and Cambridge 400 years ago, we have excellent, well established links with both Oxford and Cambridge. If you are considering applying, you need specialised guidance and preparation.

This is what the Paston Oxbridge Programme offers you, through extra tuition and coaching designed to help you develop and practise academic skills beyond those required routinely for A-level study and prepare you to compete as a strong candidate for an Oxbridge place.

An important part of this is preparation for entrance tests such as the Thinking Skills Assessment, STEP papers (Maths) and other subject-specific tests such as the History and Physics Aptitude Tests, and the Modern Languages and Linguistics Admissions Tests that you may well need to sit. The programme also includes university/college visits, summer schools and mentoring by past and current university students, to help you choose a College as well as a university. Interview preparation is the final component of the programme, as interviews play a central part in selection for these universities.

Who do you work for, and what projects have you been involved in?

Hethel Innovation (Based at Hethel Engineering Centre)

I provide business support activities through an EU

funded support programme which accompanied the

phase 3 expansion of Hethel Engineering Centre. Through

this I organise collaborations between businesses and

universities in order to use world class research to boost

the local economy. Recently I have been connecting

UK businesses with European trade opportunities in

Northern France and promoting Norfolk businesses in

particular at conferences in Normandy. I also complete

business and technology mapping of the energy and

clean technology sectors in order to provide an overview

of what capabilities the region has and what the

gaps are.

What is a ‘typical day' at work like?

A typical day usually involves one or more meetings

with businesses, universities/research organisations

or support agencies along with desk based research work and small tasks assisting in the day to day running and

operation of Hethel Engineering Centre itself. The team that I work in organise regular conferences and other

events so this normally plays a part on most days.

Over the years, students from Paston have gone on to achieve outstanding success in a huge variety of different fields

What did you study at Paston? How did that

course help you progress upon your career path?

I studied Maths, Physics and Geography which has led almost

directly to the environmental science and engineering route that I took. All three are now required in my job,

especially when dealing with the energy sector of both oil & gas and renewables where both engineering and the

environment dictate many projects.

What are the important skills you have had to develop and hone to be successful in your job?

I have to have good research skills, along with the ability to multitask and prioritise important activities out of

an extensive list of things to do. Communication skills are key, especially when presenting at conferences or

communicating with businesses through meetings and networking at events. The communication extends into

the need for report writing skills to convey my research and investigation to interested parties.

Did you ever envisage doing this while you were at Paston?

I did not intend to go into engineering until I finished my degree in environmental science and saw the number of

engineering jobs on offer; I then changed direction by taking an engineering masters.

What did you do in the year immediately after graduating?

I finished university with 3 months working for Shell at Bacton Gas Terminal (summer 2013) to complete my

dissertation for the masters and then almost immediately joined Hethel Innovation in September 2013.

What is a ‘typical day‘ at work like?

I get to the practice at around 8am, check the daily calendar to see what visits are booked in for the day, and then generally have consultations with animals at the practice or visiting farms / stables throughout the day. Grab some lunch when possible, then finish around 5, unless on call for the evening.

What did you study at Paston? How did that course help you progress upon your career path?

I studied Chemistry, Maths and Biology, with Physics at AS, which gave me some exposure to a broad array of science which was integral to the further study I undertook at university, and to the job I do now.

People skills are number one. Definitely developed a lot of this at college, where you leave the familiarity of high school and meet a vast array of new people.

Yes – it was my career choice from the beginning, which Paston worked very hard with me to help me achieve.

I had a gap year and travelled to the Falkland Islands to work with a government vet team.


GCE A–level remains the principal post–16 academic qualification in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the qualification taken by most young people aiming to go on to university – especially in the case of Russell Group universities.

Our students do consistently well at AS and A–level, performing “significantly better than would be expected on the basis of their GCSE results”. In fact, Paston

students, on average achieve a grade higher than expected in all their courses. However, don’t forget that, with the loss of AS level qualifications, universities will now be paying more attention to your GCSE results.

BTEC Extended Diplomas are better known by their former name of BTEC National Diplomas. They offer you an alternative approach to advanced level study, enabling

you to explore a vocational area in depth and breadth. The courses are delivered through assignments, giving you the chance to study in a practical and vocational setting.

The teachers and your tutor are so friendly and supportive at Paston and I have made loads of new friends. The variety of units covered and depth to which you study is so good. You have to be more independent, doing your own research but this prepares you well for university. I am going to study Sports Coaching at University of Brighton.

If you are not studying Art at GCSE we ask you to bring to your interview a sketchbook of drawings demonstrating your interest in art and a 200 word review of the work of either Anselm Kiefer or Tracey Emin, or Merit or Distinction in a full level 2 BTEC Diploma in Art or a related subject and a grade C or above in English Language.

If you are not studying Media/Graphics at GCSE you can still apply for the course and you will need to bring to interview a 200 word review of a computer game, film or TV programme, or A Merit/Distinction in a level 2 BTEC Diploma in a related area and GCSE English Language at grade C or above.

Four GCSEs at grades A*-C including one of English Language, Mathematics or a Science. It is an advantage to have a GCSE in PE or A Merit/Distinction in a full level 2 BTEC Diploma in Sport or PE plus grade C or above in GCSE English Language.

Opportunities to Resit GCSEs

English Language WJEC

A grade D will have normally been

achieved in GCSE English.

Mathematics AQA

A grade D at GCSE in Mathematics.

It is now a legal requirement that all Post 16

students work towards achieving a C grade

GCSE in English and Maths if they have not

already done so.
