    In the active voice, the subjectperforms the action.

    For example:Mark is drawing a picture.

    Mark is the subject and he is doingsomething (drawing).

    Lets see two examples:

    Active: Mary sends a letter every week.

    When do we use the

    passive voice?1. When you do not wish to emphasizedo not wish to emphasize

    the subjectthe subject of the sentence.

    Smoking is prohibited. (passive)

    The management prohibits smoking.

    (active)

    (the passive keeps the managementfrom being the bad guys.)

    2. When the person or thingacting is unknown or irrelevant.

    Poisonous gaseswere foundin sixfactories.

    (this passive sentence is about findinggases, not WHO found them!!!)

    3. When the DOER isn't important, we onlycare about the PROCESS:

    UHT milkis boiledfor 12 seconds, at atemperature exceeding 135C

    Tomatoesare friedand then canned

    Or when we want to focus on the RESULT ofan action. It is not important who or what is

    performing the action.

    My carhas been stolen.(I dont know who stole my car, the important

    thing now is that my car was stolen)

    4. Remember: a statement in the

    passive is more polite than theactive voice:

    A deskwas brokenyesterday.

    (Here I focus on the fact that a deskwas broken, but I dont want to blameanyone).

    That is why we often use passives inFORMAL style.

    5. When we are talking about something

    and we don't want to change thesubject:

    The film was a great success;it was directed by Peter Jackson

    in 2001 and (it was) shot in New Zealand.

    (we are talking about the filmabout the film, not aboutthe director!!)
