Nepal was struck by an 8.1M earthquake
Nepal was struck by an 8.1M earthquake on 25
April 2015 at 11:56 a.m. NST. In the earthquake,
more than 10000 people have been killed and more
than 20000 was injured. Hundreds of people are
still considered missing and more than 450000 are
displaced.
It was the most powerful disaster to strike Nepal
since the 1934 Nepal-Bihar earthquake. Some
casualties have also been reported in the several
adjoining cities across northern India, China, and
Bangladesh. Following the quake, Kathmandus
international airport was shut down.
2015 Nepal Earthquakes epicenter
lay in Barpak village of Gorkha
district and its hypocenter was at a
depth of approximately 15km.
The same region was attacked by a major
aftershock of magnitude 6.7 M on 26 April 2015.
Fresh avalanches on Mount Everest were caused
by the aftershock. In addition, the aftershock was
felt in many places in northern India. A landslide
on the Koshi Highway which blocked the section
of the road between Bhedetar and Mulghat was
caused by the aftershock. Assuming that this
earthquake was the largest event in this seismic
episode, Nepal could expect to be attacked by
more than 30 aftershocks greater than magnitude
5 over the following month.

WHY?
According the studies, we learned that the
crust of the earth is divided into huge plates
that drift apart or collide. The immense
Himalayas were made by an especially dramatic
collision. Its produced big earthquake faults in
Tibet.
Nepal Earthquakes History
The 1934 Nepal- Bihar earthquake was one of the
worst earthquakes in the history of Nepal and
Bihar. The widespread damages in northern Bihar
and in Nepal were caused by this 8.0 magnitude
earthquake which occurred on 15 January at
around 2:13 PM. The three towns of Nepal
Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan were severely
affected and almost all building collapsed. Several
roads were damaged in Kathmandu.
In Sitamarhi, not a single house was left standing.
In Rajnagar, all the Kutcha buildings were collapsed.
The buildings of Darbhanga Raj, including the
famous Naulakha Palace, were severely damaged.
About 10700 to 12000 people were killed.
Relief
Resources have been offered to Nepal by groups such
as the Red Cross, Mercy Corps, the United Nations
Childrens Fund (UNICEF) and the international charity
Save the Children. About 90% of Nepalese Army
soldiers were sent to stricken areas by the
government. The critically wounded was medically
evacuated by international aid agencies such as the
International Federation of Red Cross and Red
Crescent. An eleven members team, water and
sanitation were sent by the Medecins Sans Frontieres.
9.9 million dollars, tents, blankets and generators
were donated by China. 268 members and 26 search-
&-rescue dogs were sent by CISAR. 4 million dollars, 2
humanitarian experts and a crisis-response team were
sent by Australia. About 8 million dollars were
donated by the government of the United Kingdom.
Something a little bit different was offered by
from Apple to Viber. An iTunes Store feature that
allows visitors to donate to the American Red Cross
has been activated by Apple.

to reach victims of the quake
because of government
bureaucracy. However, the supplies
came here.
Rescue teams
Reason of earthquake
The big earthquake was caused by
collision of between the Indian
plate and the Eurasian plate. These
plates were composed of same
material. The Indian plate could not
go down to the Eurasian plate, so it
was occurred bigger than usual.
After the earthquake, twenty times
aftershocks were occurred.
It was not first big earthquake in
Nepal. The biggest earthquakes
happened in 1834 and 1934.
Although many rescue teams were
transported, but it still delayed.
Therefore, people should more pay
attention to this happened and try to

Nepal quake: Nation struggles with
devastation by: Gahee Yoo / Claudia Cortes
Saturday, 25 April, 2015 Nepal, a
country of Asia, was stricken by a
powerful earthquake with an estimated
the magnitude of a 7.8.
Nepal is a country located in South Asia. With
an area of 147,181 square kilometers and a
population of approximately 27 million
The earthquake's epicenter was 80
kilometers northwest of Kathmandu,
and it also affected several cities in
India, Pakistan, Tibet, and Bangladesh.
The main quake was followed by many
potent aftershocks and many smaller
tremors in the area.
The main shock is in red and the major aftershocks in yellow.
This was the worst earthquake to hit
Nepal and it has caused a high number
of deaths, injuries and material lost: at
least 8.000 people were confirmed
dead in Nepal, another 35 were killed
in India and 6 more in China and more
than 14.000 were injured. In addition,
several buildings collapsed, many
ancient cultural heritage sites were
destroyed, and many poor villas were
devastated.
Result of the earthquake
Following the quake, many people
were rescued and taken away from the
epicenter. However, more than ten
days after the quake, rescue and
recovery groups were working to
rescue people in isolated areas that
couldnt get any external help because
roads were several damaged. In many
villages nearly to the earthquake's
epicenter, almost all houses had
collapsed, leaving people living and
sleeping in the open.
As a result of all local and external
aids, more than 2 million have been
displaced to Fifty-eight relief camps
which had been set up as drop houses
for people who lost everything. In
addition, health groups such as The
International Red Cross and others aid
and relief groups have targeted aid
relief to prevent waterborne diseases
such as cholera or dysentery,
distributing clean drinking water and
delivering water purification tablets.
This tragedy was caused because
Nepal sits right between two tectonic
plates: Indian Plate and Eurasian
Plate. Those plates were met beneath
the Himalayas along a fault line. The
Indian plate was moving northward
relative to the Eurasian plate. Eurasian
plate was pushed by Indian plate. This
pressure eventually caused the
earthquake.
Stratum of Nepal. The Indian plate is to the left
and under the Asian plate.

Nepal: More Than a
Tragedy ______________________________________
by: Abdulaziz and Angie Bello
The last Saturday 25 April, 2015
Kathmandu- Nepal as an epicenter
of an earthquake was destroyed.
However, the most enormous
damage was produced by the
shallow quakes with a depth of 6
miles under the ground.
Consequently, other places such as
Pokhara, Lamjung and Barpak in
Nepal, Northern India, Mount
Everest, Pabna and Dhaka in
Bangladesh and China in the Tibet
region, were affected as well.
Map of Nepal
Kathmandu before the earthquake
The estimate number of people
who were dead is 7.759, and the
injured people whom are registered
until now are 17.200. In addition,
some buildings, temples and
houses have been damaged; for
example, the Dhrahara tower which
is a land mark nine-story structure
was collapsed. Subsequently, more
than 80% of the houses in the rural
area have been demolished.
Nepal after the earthquake
The Himalayas were created when
the plates collided a long time ago
and the still roaming around Indian
plate pushes the mountains some
millimeters higher every year. As a
result of this movements, Nepal is
prone to earthquakes.
The same segment of the fault was
moved 81 years ago in 1934. At
that time, the earthquake was felt in
BiharNepal as the epicenter of the
shacked. Also this quake, was one
of the worst earthquakes in the
history of Nepal and Bihar- India
with and 8.0 magnitude. The three
major towns of the Kathmandu
Valley, Bhaktapur and Patan, were
brutally affected and almost all the
buildings collapsed. Large cracks
appeared in the ground and several
roads were damaged. This means
that Nepal will being continued in
risk.
