EUROJET Turbo GmbH (EUROJET), is the management

company responsible for the EJ200 engine system,

installed in the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, and is

the point of contact for all EJ200 project activities. A

leading military aerospace engine consortium in Europe,

EUROJET’s shareholders comprise Avio (Italy), ITP (Spain),

MTU Aero Engines (Germany) and Rolls-Royce (UK). The

company’s responsibilities include the management of

development, support and export of the new generation

EJ200 powerplant and it operates out of its headquarters

in Hallbergmoos, Germany (near Munich airport).

EUROJET, together with Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug

GmbH (Eurofighter), which is responsible for managing

the development and production of the complete

Eurofighter Typhoon weapon system, are the industrial

contractual partners

The origin of the EUROJET partnership lies

in the collaboration of three European

companies, Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines

and Avio, in the development and production

of the RB199 engine for the Tornado aircraft.

The success of this earlier partnership, with

a total fleet of more than 950 aircraft and

approximately 6 million engine flying hours

achieved, paved the way for future European

collaboration programmes.

Like the Eurofighter Typhoon, the EJ200 engine is

assembled in four different assembly lines, located

in each of the partner nations. The workshare reflects

the number of aircraft, and the associated number of

engines, ordered by the respective industrial partner.

The distribution, as indicated below, makes best use of

each partner company’s expertise and technology:

Low pressure (LP) turbine, reheat

system, gearbox and air/oil system

Exhaust nozzle, jet pipe, exhaust

diffuser, by-pass duct and external

dressings

The EJ200 programme began in 1983 with what was

then called the European Fighter Aircraft (later to

become the Eurofighter Typhoon) project. In 1988, the

governments of Italy, Germany, Spain and the United

Kingdom authorized formal development contracts for

the aircraft’s systems, including the EJ200 engines.

The LP compressor is a 3-stage, FOD-tolerant axial

flow unit with a very high pressure ratio (4.2 : 1). It is an

all-blisk (integrally bladed disc) design featuring wide

chord aerofoils attached by advanced linear friction

welding techniques and operates without the need for

inlet guide vanes.

The axial flow HP compressor consists of 5 stages, deliv-

ering a pressure increase of 6.2 : 1 [overall the EJ200

compression system delivers 26 : 1 in only 8 stages]

with a high surge margin and only 1 set of variable inlet

guide vanes.

The HP turbine is a single-stage, shroudless design using

3-D, single-crystal, nickel alloy aerofoils with advanced

internal and film cooling, ensuring long life, low blade

numbers and high levels of performance. Tip clearance

control is also employed to maintain efficiency. Turbine

blade temperature is measured using an optical

pyrometer, which is linked to the digital engine control

and monitoring unit (DECMU). Plasma-sprayed thermal

barrier coatings are used on liners and vanes.

The annular combustor

is a very compact

design employing latest

technology features

to achieve extremely

demanding requirements in

terms of emissions (zero visible

smoke), combustion stability / handling, efficiency and

life. Features include advanced air spray fuel injectors

with preferential fuelling, film cooling & thermal barrier

coating and fuel boroscope access.

The advanced-staged afterburner system uses radial

burners and primary vaporisers in the hot stream

and fuel injection in the cold stream to give very high

combustion efficiency over the operational range. The

three burners are independently supplied with fuel,

giving continuous and smooth modulation between

minimum and maximum reheat. The design achieves

smooth selection, low smoke and maximum thrust

boost whilst minimizing instabilities.

The LP turbine is a single-stage shrouded design

chosen for its high efficiency and performance

retention characteristics. Single-crystal, cooled

turbine blades are used in the turbine rotor

and thermal barrier coatings are used on static

components (vanes). As with the HP turbine,

this unit represents a step change from previous

designs.

Extensive use of brush seals is made throughout the

engine; these have advantages in terms of reduced

leakage, mass, lower heat transfer to oil and improved

supportability.

The EJ200 features an external wrap-around gearbox,

positioned on the underside of the engine for acces-

sibility, and a fully aerobatic, self-contained oil system

with automatic oil debris monitoring. The oil tank is

mounted on the front left side of the gearbox and

contains a rotating basket which generates an artificial

gravitational force thus ensuring a supply of oil to the

pump even under the most extreme flight conditions.

The full authority Digital Engine Control and Monitoring

Unit is engine-mounted for accessibility and is a

twin-lane, fault-tolerant system linked to the aircraft

flight control system. It constantly monitors the

functional status of the engine and allows precise,

responsive and safe control at all times. The engine

health monitoring system includes features such as

individual component life usage, continuous vibration

and oil debris monitoring and event reporting. The

whole engine is designed for on-condition mainte-

nance and low life-cycle costs, which is supported by

this technology.

More than 1,500 EJ200 engines, employed in the

Eurofighter Typhoon, are currently on contract to six

nations: in addition to the four partner nations, the

first export customers are Austria and the Kingdom of

Saudi Arabia. Eurofighter Typhoon is the world’s best-

selling, new-generation, multi-role combat aircraft with

707 aircraft currently under contract. The outstanding

capabilities of the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft and its

driving force, the EJ200, have raised the interest of many

other nations. Together with its partners, EUROJET is

actively supporting further export campaigns.
