Game-Changing Innovation for Every Industry

Before BigMemory, many software architects wouldn’t even THINK about putting more than a few GBs of data in RAM for

fear of garbage collection pauses. BigMemory stores data off the Java heap, meaning you can max out the largest servers

on the market. Capacity is unlimited. Scale up, scale out—even scale to the cloud—while achieving lightning-fast access

to Big Data.

Companies large and small have turned to BigMemory to accelerate Big Data initiatives. Here are just a few examples of

how BigMemory is creating opportunities for market leaders in a wide range of industries.

Why BigMemory is a Big Deal

The Big Challenge: Deliver the speed online customers expect whilemaintaining growth and stability

, a Fortune 150 seller of athletic footwear and apparel and one of the most recognizable

brands on the planet, was experiencing large increases in traffic at its e-commerce site, which

features nearly 7,500 products. Product data requests were taxing its search engine, as well as

impacting page load times for online shoppers.

Like many e-commerce sites, the online store of this global brand pulls data from various sources,

including disk-bound databases, web services, and a search engine. As transaction volumes have

grown, so has the load on these services. Large spikes in traffic — due to promotions, product

releases, and events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday — jeopardized the stability of these

backend services and, ultimately, the performance of the e-commerce website.

Why BigMemory: Data consistency across 32 web application servers and

four commodity machines in a networked arraydecided to protect itself from traffic spikes with an in-memory data management solution

that would make product information, customer reviews, and search results instantly available.

opted for a highly available BigMemory Max deployment with a 68GB in-memory data

store. The installation included a local 1GB BigMemory store on each of 32 web application

servers and a shared 36GB BigMemory store distributed across four commodity machines, with

BigMemory ensuring data consistency across the array.

The Big Results: Online shopping experience improved without newhardware; backend services load slashed by 40 percentSince going live, BigMemory has reduced overall load on ’s backend services by 40%. A

whopping 90% of product data requests are served directly and instantly by BigMemory; only

50% of search requests hit its search engine. As an added benefit, BigMemory has improved

the experience for online shoppers, with ultra-fast data access cutting average page load time

by 16% and reducing search time by 30%. BigMemory not only helps avoid the expenseof new backend servers, but also protects the performance of systems that do double-duty

supporting the business outside the website. Thanks to BigMemory, is well positioned to

keep e-commerce sales running higher and higher.

As BigMemory is a source of strategic advantage,

this client has asked that its name be redacted.

The Big Challenge: Radically boost the performance of applications thatdetect blacklisted cards

’s credit cards are accepted at millions of merchant locations and more than 845,000 ATMs

in more than 185 countries. determined that it was failing to meet its one-second SLA for

identifying blacklised credit cards approximately 0.3 percent of the time — which adds up when

you’re dealing with thousands of transactions every second. This resulted in blacklisted cards

being improperly accepted, costing an estimated of $10 million annually. The causes were

twofold. First, kept its list of seven million blacklisted card numbers and individuals in a

disk-bound Oracle database, which was slow to access. Second, Java’s garbage collector caused

extended, unpredictable pauses. Each pause forced to “guess” on many transactions,

exposing the company to losses.

Why BigMemory: Advanced in-memory data management and low, predictable latency at scale

wanted to move its entire list of blacklisted cards and individuals into machine memoryto dramatically improve access speed. considered Oracle Coherence, but ultimately

concluded that only Terracotta BigMemory could deliver advanced in-memory data management

as well as extremely low  and predictable latency at scale — all without garbage collection pauses

or expensive and time-consuming Java tuning. In addition, Terracotta’s WAN connector performed

flawlessly in replicating ’s in-memory data sets across global data centers.

The Big Results: Blacklisted cards identified within SLA for 99.995% oftransactions; 10GB of in-memory data protected and millions of dollars savedSince putting BigMemory live in production, meets its SLA more than 99.995% of the time.

The company’s 10GB store of in-memory blacklist data is protected by BigMemory’s persistent

storage and fault-tolerant, fast-restartable architecture — so machines coming back online after

an outage don’t demand a full reload from the database. WAN replication keeps ’s global

data centers in sync, making it easy to redirect traffic from one to another in case of outages or

heavy loads. The solution is performing so well that plans to power its fraud detectionapplication wtih BigMemory in the near future.

The Big Challenge: Dramatically improve fraud detection accuracy and speed As a global clearinghouse for online and credit card payments, ’s profits depend on managing

risk effectively. Fraud was costing around 30 cents of every $100 in transactions, but the risk

management team determined that enhancing the company’s fraud detection algorithm with one

additional rule would save $12 million annually. The company’s existing platform handled only

50 rules, but the team wanted to add thousands. To boost customer satisfaction, the team also

wanted to guarantee that transactions would be flagged or approved in less than 650 milliseconds.

’s existing end-to-end service-level agreement (SLA) was 800 milliseconds, and the company

failed to meet that SLA as often as 10 percent of the time. When the SLA wasn’t met, was

forced to either approve the transaction or pay a fine, costing an estimated $10 million each year.

Why BigMemory: Predictable, low latency at scalewas using Oracle Exadata to store fraud detection rules in disparate disk-bound databases,

but found that throughput was limited to 2,000 fraud detection transactions per second and latency

was inconsistent. A proof-of-concept implementaiton demonstrated that BigMemory could keep

100x the number of rules in a central, TB-scale in-memory store and boost throughput by over

30x, to 65,000 transactions per second. After confirming that BigMemory delivered extremely low,

predictable latency at scale, was confident that BigMemory was the ideal choice — not

only for adding algorithmic complexity and accuracy, but also for meeting the new, stricter SLA.

The Big Results: Millions of dollars in annual profit plus additional savings inunneeded database licenses; SLA met 99.999% of the time

’s BigMemory-powered fraud detection platform now incorporates thousands of validation

rules, transaction rules, and risk rules, all stored in a 4TB BigMemory store. The BigMemory

solution is responsible for producing an estimated tens of millions of dollars in annual profit for the

company through reduced fraud loss, and the company now meets its stricter 650-millisecond

end-to-end SLA for 99% of transactions. Thanks to BigMemory, is also saving an estimated

$1 million annually by not having to purchase additional database licenses. plans to

expand its BigMemory store to 150 TB while committing to an even tighter end-to-end SLA of

250 milliseconds, which will deliver even greater results to the business.

The Big Challenge: Accelerate delivery of mission critical advertisingdata and reports to improve customer satisfaction

provides insight into the watching and buying habits of an estimated 10 million global

consumers. Ad agencies and brand marketers rely on ’s online measurement tools to maximize

the effectiveness of fast-moving Internet advertising campaigns, so it’s critical that the company

deliver ad performance reports quickly.

Customers retrieved campaign performance reports through a web portal, which in turn queried a

disk-bound database to compile reports from tens of terabytes of ad-tracking data. However, customer

satisfaction took a hit when slowdowns in data access began to degrade system performance. In some

cases, customers had to wait as long as 20 seconds for campaign reports — an eternity in today’s

need-it-now world. Even more troubling, slow database access caused an internal security system

to time out on more than 50% of queries, and the problem only got worse as data volumes grew.

Why BigMemory: Unmatched performance, faster search

needed a solution that would both accelerate data access and effectively manage fast-flowing,rapidly growing online campaign data. Following a successful proof-of-concept (POC) implementation,

decided to use Terracotta BigMemory as an in-memory data management solution for daily

data feeds. Every 24 hours, BigMemory’s in-memory store is refreshed with 200GB of fresh results

(the data is also written to a database). The solution makes extensive use of BigMemory’s simple,

powerful Search API, which supports complex, high-performance queries on large in-memory datasets.

The Big Results: Dramatically faster data access times and higher customersatisfaction; long-term contracts on the riseWith BigMemory, ’s data access times have plunged by as much as 99.9% — from 20 seconds

to as fast as 20 milliseconds. Customers now have consistently fast access to time-sensitive online

ad performance metrics. “Their developers kept telling us BigMemory was like magic,” recalls Sumant

Pachori, Terracotta Field Engineer. What’s more, BigMemory has completely eliminated the problem

of timed-out queries that frustrated so many users. The vastly improved customer experience has

elevated satisfaction levels and given clients the confidence to sign longer-term contracts. In-memorydata management has been so beneficial that plans to expand its BigMemory data store

to several terabytes.

The Big Challenge: Win new customers by managing loyalty in real-time Retailers communicate with through a point-of-sale application that manages activities suchas adding points to a customer’s account, subtracting redemptions, and presenting relevant marketing

offers — all in real time while the customer waits. Large retail prospects required that commit

to an aggressive end-to-end service level agreement (SLA) of 500 milliseconds for every transaction.

Unfortunately, ’s data center took an average of 20 percent longer than that — 600 milliseconds

— just to query upwards of 32GB of customer data in a central, disk-bound database. Worse, Java-

related garbage collection pauses caused unexpected spikes in response times that would have resulted

both in financial penalties for failure to meet the SLA, and in unhappy customers. In order to win new

business from larger retailers, realized it had to move its data into fast machine memory.

Why BigMemory: Performance and scale targets achieved; Java garbagecollection pauses eliminated

considered Terracotta BigMemory and Oracle Coherence as options for achieving its

performance and scale targets. After a successful proof-of-concept implementation, identified

the main reasons for choosing Terracotta: full support for the Ehcache API, better Hibernate support,

simpler deployment, a smaller server footprint, and motivated, knowledgeable engineers. “It was quiteimpressive to just change a configuration file, load 32GB of data, and watch the garbage collection

pauses disappear,” says , Assisant Director of Digital Channels at .

The Big Results: Blazingly fast performance and vastly improved transactionthroughput attracts major new customers

The marketing program company brought the first retailer into production with all 32 GB of customer

information in BigMemory, and immediately experienced an 83 percent drop in data access times —

from 600 to 100 milliseconds. At the same time, transaction throughput jumped by a whopping 400

percent. Garbage collection is no longer an issue, allowing the company to meet the 500 mill isecond

end-to-end SLA demands for the first time.

In the months following the initial launch, five more large retailers have gone into production on the

company’s point-of-sale platform. Thanks to BigMemory, which is also the in-memory data management

solution for web, mobile, phone (IVR), and customer support, easily handled a wildly successful

marketing promotion that drew double the traffic of the company’s busiest seasons. Web responsetimes and timeouts are also way down. Finally, can scale to even more customers without

further investing in disk-bound data storage. ’s assistant director also notes, “We are now able

to easily serve these channels within our SLAs and without increasing hardware or software resources.”

The Big Challenge: Build a global consumer platform for media streamingthat meets strict performance and scaling requirements

was asked by a consortium of Hollywood studios, retailers, and other technology companies

to build a new consumer platform for selling and streaming movies to computers, TVs, tablets,

smartphones, and other devices. The consortium imposed strict requirements around performance

and scale, including always-on account access and fast, seamless streaming. decided that

making consumer account information and movie data instantly available through an in-memory

data solution was the best way to meet these tough requirements.

Why BigMemory: Superior scalability, advanced functionalityconsidered a number of solutions including Oracle Coherence and VMware GemFire, but

ultimately chose Terracotta BigMemory after a rigorous proof-of-concept (POC) implementation.

BigMemory not only met the company’s tough performance and reliability requirements, but also

delivered superior scalability — a major advantage given the consortium’s aggressive growth plan.

The company especially valued Terracotta’s WAN replication technology, which supports globalexpansion by keeping account information in sync as new data centers are brought online. In tests

of a multi-data center configuration, BigMemory maintained low, predictable latencies.

The Big Results: After a successful launch, the new entertainment platformnow serves 6.5 million and is expanding worldwide

successfully launched its exciting new entertainment platform with an 80GB BigMemory

store for account data and digital movies. More than 6.5 million people have signed up for the

service in North America, and BigMemory has performed flawlessly, allowing consumers to watch

movies anytime on any device. Now the consortium is rolling out the service worldwide, adding new

countries every quarter. ’s operations team loves how BigMemory is so easy to configure and

administer, and the company has already committed to expanding its BigMemory usage next year.

As BigMemory is a source of strategic advantage,

this client has asked that its name be redacted.

The Big Challenge: Backend customer and billing systems, already struggling to keep upwith call center demands, must scale for millions of online customers

, a leading Australian telecommunications company, needed to drastically update its customer

service model. While the rest of the world was moving more and more customer services online, over

90% of ’s customer interactions still came through traditional call centers.

initially figured its e-service applications could tap the same backend customer and billing

systems that supported its call centers. Unfortunately, these systems buckled under the load: retrieving,

aggregating, and normalizing customer data from disparate databases took as long as 30 seconds,

which would never scale for millions of online customers. Poor performance limited e-service uptake

and frustrated customers, raising the risk of increased churn and failure to reduce support costs.

Why BigMemory: Low latency access to multiple-terabyte datasets, simple architecture, and reduced hardware and software costs

looked carefully at a variety of options in head-to-head tests, ultimately rejecting Oracle Coherence

as too expensive and ruling out IBM eXtreme Scale over concerns about performance at terabyte

scale. Instead, built an innovative in-memory data management solution for customer supportwith Terracotta BigMemory as its in-memory data management solution. Rigorous testing proved that

BigMemory could consistently deliver extremely low latency to multiple-terabyte datasets. Because

BigMemory works on low-cost, commodity servers, could simplify its architecture, reducing

hardware and software costs. Terracotta partnered with Accenture and Australian technology firm

Ecetera on a successful deployment.

The Big Results: 10,000+ customers use e-services each day, enjoying100% data availability and lightning-fast access times; support costs slashed

The new architecture went live with 1TB of customer information in BigMemory’s in-memory stores.

BigMemory slashed data access times from 30 seconds to a mere 200 milliseconds while delivering

100% data availability. E-service performance improved so dramatically that the company’s Program

Lead said, “I’ve had so many high fives walking through the building that my hand hurts.”

With more than 10,000 people using e-services daily, is ready to roll out the program more

broadly, and is already saving tens of millions of dollars in support costs. also plans to take

advantage of new opportunities to increase revenue with targeted online and mobile product offers.

Better yet, because BigMemory has eliminated latency and capacity constraints, now has the

flexibility to launch new online applications that advance ’s business strategy.

BigMemory Performance Results on Two Terabytes of RAM

Methodology

All tests were performed by the Terracotta performance engineering team on hardware provided by HPLabs. The test code is available via a public Subversion repository here:  https://svn.terracotta.org/repo/forge/offHeap-test/branches/3.7.x/

. Access to the public repository requires a Terracotta community account available at www.terracotta.org.

IntroductionAt the intersection of plummeting RAM prices and exploding data sets lies an opportunity for businesses

to change what is possible to do with their data––whether that's multiplying the throughput of existing

applications or bringing new real-time data services online. Unfortunately, traditional Java applications are

unable to take full advantage of the terabytes of local memory available to them today.BigMemory is a solution that stores big amounts of data in machine memory for ultra-fast access. It snaps

into enterprise applications to deliver high-speed performance at any scale. As data sets grow, traditional

Java applications get bogged down in Java Garbage Collection (GC), database latencies, and complexscale-out schemes. BigMemory, however, uses existing machine RAM outside of the garbage collector's

reach. Plugging in BigMemoryA major hallmark of an effective in-memory data management system is its ability to maintain

performance while handling ever-larger data sets and a range of access rates and data element sizes.

Terracotta partnered with HP Labs to test BigMemory's ability to fully utilize the terabytes of RAM

available on HP servers. To validate BigMemory's performance under these different conditions, we tested its throughput and

latency under three test scenarios: Scaling up

– Testing performance across a range of in-memory data set sizes from gigabytes to terabytes Varying data characteristics

– Testing performance across a range of sizes and number of data elements Varying data access patterns   – Testing performance while changing the ratio of read and write operations
