Main Characteristics
Main theme of the Surah is hujjah upon thedisbelievers and about the aqeedah
Sent down at one time as one Surah
Sent down at the time when Prophet SAW wascommanded to openly give the daw’ah
Addressed to the mushrikeen
Ayahs 01 – 90 Divided into 10 parts – about Qudrah of Allah in the Universe
Part I Ayahs 01 - 03
[All] praise is [due] to Allah , whocreated the heavens and the earth andmade the darkness and the light. Then those who disbelieve equate[others] with their Lord.It is He who created you from clayand then decreed a term and aspecified time [known] to Him; then[still] you are in dispute. And He is Allah , [the only deity] in theheavens and the earth. He knows yoursecret and what you make public, andHe knows that which you earn.
First three ayahs talk about qudrah of Allah SWT; creation and the mention about Oneness of
Allah SWT and His knowledge. Also mentions the disbelievers doubt and make His partners
Part II Ayahs 04 - 11
Argument of the mushrikeen and their punishment
Page 2
About the mushrikeen, their stubbornness and their punishment: Their arguments from 7 –
10, ayah 11 is their punishment.
And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they turn away therefrom.
Despite clear signs being shown to the disbelievers in the universe around them; both kauni
and shariah they turn away in denial.
For they had denied the truth when it came to them, but there is going to reach them the news of whatthey used to ridicule.
But they denied the truth when it came to them, whoever denies the truth Allah swt will make
to see them in the future and in the akhirah the truth which they mock.
Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon theearth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and maderivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them ageneration of others.
We learn from the past so Allah SWT telling us about the nations which were more powerful
and endowed by Allah SWT but He destroyed them because of their sins and He SWT replaced
them with better people. Allah SWT talking with the disbelievers in order for them to take a
lesson.
And even if We had sent down to you, [O Muhammad], a written scripture on a page and they touched itwith their hands, the disbelievers would say, "This is not but obvious magic."
Even if the Qur’an would have been sent on paper and they would have touched it they would
still have denied it and would have called it clear magic.
Page 3
And they say, "Why was there not sent down to him an angel?" But if We had sent down an angel, thematter would have been decided; then they would not be reprieved.
They demanded that why not an angel is descended to reveal the message, Allah SWT is
saying that if the angel would have descended then the matter would have been finished and
they would not have given a chance to repent and Allah swt KNEW OUT OF His perfect
knowledge they would not have believed.
And if We had made him an angel, We would have made him [appear as] a man, and We would havecovered them with that in which they cover themselves.
Allah swt saying even if He would make an angel the messenger He would have sent him as a
man. So much arguing with the truth and demanding things to show their disbelieve and they
did not submit.
Page 4

And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by thatwhich they used to ridicule.
The disbelievers mocked Prophet SAW as they mocked earlier prophets by demanding
different things as given in the earlier ayahs
Say, "Travel through the land; then observe how was the end of the deniers."
Something very obvious that you just walk through and you will see the consequences of the
previous nations because of their sins
Part III Ayahs 12 - 19
Some of the signs of Oneness of Allah SWT andthe resurrection
Say, "To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth?" Say, "To Allah." He has decreed uponHimself mercy. He will surely assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who will lose themselves [that Day] do not believe
Allah swt teaching Nabi SAW the teaching approach, how to interact with the disbelievers.
They will not have the answer so you saw answer them and tell them that everything belongs
to Allah swt so we need to worship Him alone.
Everything belongs to Allah SWT and He SWT can punish the disbelievers and deprive them of
everything but He swt has prescribed upon Himself mercy so He will not hasten the
punishment upon the disbelievers but He will gather them on the day of judgment where He
Page 5
will judge and recompense. His rewards precede His punishment. On that day the ones not
worshipping the Owner will be the losers and they lost themselves by worshipping those who
don’t possess anything and don’t deserve to be worshipped.
The believers will be the winners because they fulfill the right of their Creator by worshipping
Him alone and yet they can never fulfill His rights but in rewarding them Allah SWT give them
more than they deserve out of His mercy SubhanAllah.
Look at the idols you are creating with your own hands and you take care of them and feed
them so there is no comparison between them and Allah SWT who has created everything and
He feeds everyone and is not fed by anyone, to provide Him anything because He owns
everything and He SWT provides everyone out of His dominion.
Say, "Is it other than Allah I should take as a protector, Creator of the heavens and the earth, while it isHe who feeds and is not fed?" Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to be the first [amongyou] who submit [to Allah] and [was commanded], 'Do not ever be of the polytheists.' "
So tell them about robobiya – Creator of the universe and alohiya that I am commanded to
worship only Him alone, this is La Illaha illa Lah – all evidence about wahdaniat of Allah SWT.
Say, "Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."
It’s like I don’t trust myself that I will disobey Allah SWT and I need help from Him to save me
from disobeying Him, this is exalting Allah SWT and admitting our weakness that we are
nothing without tawfiq from Allah SWT.
He from whom it is averted that Day - [Allah] has granted him mercy. And that is the clear attainment.
Whoever is saved on that day from the humiliating punishment, through Allah’s Rahmah then
he is successful because only Allah SWT can save us from the punishment of the fire. This is
talking to the disbeliever about the Day of Judgment and from disobeying Allah swt.
Page 6
And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He touches youwith good - then He is over all things competent.
No one has any power to save us from any harm or any good touching us – it’s just touch of
harm or good in this world as this is a sample. Allah SWT has all the power to save us from
the harm and give any khair. This is the Tawheed that no one can help in distress, in
removing it except Allah SWT.
And He is the subjugator over His servants. And He is the Wise, the Acquainted [with all
Allah SWT is above all His creation and servants and His wisdom is perfect and His knowledge
is also perfect SubhanAllah.
Say, "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say, “Allah is witness between me and you. And this Qur'anwas revealed to me that I may warn you thereby and whomever it reaches. Do you [truly] testify that withAllah there are other deities?" Say, "I will not testify [with you]." Say, "Indeed, He is but one God, andindeed, I am free of what you associate [with Him]."

Part IV 20 - 32
Denial of Prophet SAW despite recognition andtheir standing on day of qiyamah
Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize it as they recognize their [own] sons. Those who willlose themselves [in the Hereafter] do not believe.
They lost themselves because they disbelieved in the Prophet SAW despite their recognizing of
the Prophet SAW as good as their own children. This is like denying and disbelieving on Allah
SWT. They followed their desires and denied Allah SWT ayahs.
And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie or denies His verses? Indeed, thewrongdoers will not succeed.
There is no more injustice than putting lies on Allah SWT – the justice is believing in Allah
SWT and His prophets.
And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day We will gather them all together; then We will say to those whoassociated others with Allah , "Where are your 'partners' that you used to claim [with Him]?"
Then there will be no [excuse upon] examination except they will say, "By Allah , our Lord, we were notthose who associated."
Page 8
When they will be gathered on the Day they will forget that they associated partners with
Allah SWT, when they will be said to call their partners. They wil swear by Allah that they did
not do shirk.
See how they will lie about themselves. And lost from them will be what they used to invent.
And among them are those who listen to you, but We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest theyunderstand it, and in their ears deafness. And if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it.Even when they come to you arguing with you, those who disbelieve say, "This is not but legends of theformer peoples."
Some of them listened carefully to the Qur’an but they did not understand because of their
desires; so Allah SWT put barriers in their ears and the hearts so they are not able to hear
and understand the Qur’an.
Even Allah SWT put coverings on their eyes so they see but still they are not seeing anything
because it did not make them to believe. They see all the signs of the prophet hood of Prophet
SAW and Allah but they argue with you on top of disbelieving the prophet SAW – they are
denying the signs with stubbornness and putting the blame that all these things are from the
stories of the past – ancient things. That is the way of the disbelievers that they are always
denying
And they prevent [others] from him and are [themselves] remote from him. And they do not destroy exceptthemselves, but they perceive [it] not.
They themselves are far away from the Qur’an and they stop others also from listening to the
truth. They destroy themselves because of their desires and they also cause destruction for
others as well. Any one following his desires will not understand anything.
Page 9
If you could but see when they are made to stand before the Fire and will say, "Oh, would that we couldbe returned [to life on earth] and not deny the signs of our Lord and be among the believers."
When they will stand on the fire then you see how will be there condition – those who denied
the truth and for them was a barrier – when they see the great punishment of their disbelief
and denial with their eyes they will wish they could come back to life and they would not belie
the signs of Allah SWT and will be among the believers.
But what they concealed before has [now] appeared to them. And even if they were returned, they wouldreturn to that which they were forbidden; and indeed, they are liars.
In their life they used to hide the truth, they knew in their hearts that the Prophet SAW
teachings are truth but they used to show their denial so they will be shown what they used
to hide – the acceptance in their hearts but denial because of their desires.
Even if they are returned to life as they wish, Allah SWT is saying that they will return to the
same denial and they lie that they will believe. That’s why they deserve the punishment
because Allah SWT knows what they conceal in their hearts and that they will never believe.
And they say, "There is none but our worldly life, and we will not be resurrected."
The other scene is their denial of the Day of Judgment and the resurrection.
If you could but see when they will be made to stand before their Lord. He will say, "Is this not the truth?"They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will [then] say, "So taste the punishment because you used todisbelieve."
They will accept their faults
Page 10
Those will have lost who deny the meeting with Allah , until when the Hour [of resurrection] comes uponthem unexpectedly, they will say, "Oh, [how great is] our regret over what we neglected concerning it,"while they bear their burdens on their backs. Unquestionably, evil is that which they bear.
They will carry the burden of their sins on their backs and will regret and wish that they
would have taken some heed regarding this day and this life.
And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for thosewho fear Allah, so will you not reason?
Talking about the denial of Prophet SAW and their witnessing the Day of Judgment and their
condition then and their regret, they will forget their misguidance and they will be completely
lost.
Part V Ayahs 33 - 39
Consolation for Nabi SAW and making his heartfirm and completing Allah’s Qudrah
We know that you, [O Muhammad], are saddened by what they say. And indeed, they do not call youuntruthful, but it is the verses of Allah that the wrongdoers reject.
Allah SWT is giving console to Prophet SAW that they are not denying him; in fact the
disbelievers called him Sadiq and Ameen but actually they were denying the verses of Allah
SWT.
And certainly were messengers denied before you, but they were patient over [the effects of] denial, andthey were harmed until Our victory came to them. And none can alter the words of Allah. And there hascertainly come to you some information about the [previous] messengers.
Page 11
The denial was there for all the messengers, so Allah SWT is giving console to Prophet SAW
that no matter how much they are denied in the end the victory is given to the truth but while
in the process of denial and hurt and harms they were patient until our help came to them.
And if their evasion is difficult for you, then if you are able to seek a tunnel into the earth or a stairwayinto the sky to bring them a sign, [then do so]. But if Allah had willed, He would have united them uponguidance. So never be of the ignorant.
Nabi SAW is being told to bring any ayah if he wants from the earth or the sky then bring it to
make them believe but they will not believe because the signs are from Allah SWT and if He
would have willed He would have gathered everyone on one religion so don’t be one of the
ignorant one because your will and regret will not change their beliefs and hearts.
Page 12

Only those who hear will respond. But the dead - Allah will resurrect them; then to Him they will bereturned.
The one who will respond to the Nabi SAW, not to the ayah – even if you bring even big ayahs
they will not listen and they are like dead people because they are not listening to the words of
their Creator and they have to return to Him. The ones who are listening to the good words
will respond
And they say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "Indeed, Allah is Able tosend down a sign, but most of them do not know."
What makes people not know because they don’t listen, if they listen only then they will have
the knowledge. Allah SWT is able to bring an ayah – not according to their wish but according
to the wisdom of Allah SWT – but they will not listen.
And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are]communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will begathered.
Not even a single creature in the world but are like nations like us, this is qudrah of Allah
SWT. They are asking for yahs but these signs are spread everywhere around us. Allah SWT
put everything in the lawhe Mahfooz, He SWT did not neglect anything. Everything will return
to their Rabb.
But those who deny Our verses are deaf and dumb within darknesses. Whomever Allah wills - He leavesastray; and whomever He wills - He puts him on a straight path.
Page 13
Those who deny Allah’s ayahs and ask for more they are in the darkness, they don’t hear
what is beneficial for them, they cannot say anything beneficial and they are in darkness so
they can’t see any light. So they are like dead people.
Part VI Ayahs 40 - 47
Case of Mushrikeen in times of ease anddifficulty & Qudrah of Allah SWT
In every part there is mention of Allah SWT; here the way of the disbeliever in the ease and
difficulty.
Say, "Have you considered: if there came to you the punishment of Allah or there came to you the Hour -is it other than Allah you would invoke, if you should be truthful?"
If those idols are truth then will you invoke them or Allah SWT at the time of distress
No, it is Him [alone] you would invoke, and He would remove that for which you invoked Him if He willed, and you would forget what you associate [with Him].
Allah swt answering that they will only call Allah SWT at that time and they will forget the
idols and the partners at this time – as mentioned earlier at the time of judgment they will
forget everyone else and only Allah SWT.
From 42 to 45 mention of istidraj – gradual punishment
And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muhammad]; then We seized them withpoverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].
Earlier also messengers were sent to call people towards Allah SWT but they belied the so
Allah’s punishment seized them so that they come back to Allah SWT.
This is the first stage of istidraj – when Allah SWT sends messengers as warners; second is
the seizure

Then why, when Our punishment came to them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts becamehardened, and Satan made attractive to them that which they were doing.
Then their hearts hardened and their deeds were beautified by shaytan.
So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every [good]thing until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were[then] in despair.
Third stage then Allah SWT opened the doors of duniya for them and they got totally
engrossed in the world and became happy with their achievements and then Allah SWT
suddenly seized them with His punishment and this is the fourth stage and then they became
despair. Allah SWT deceived the disbelievers because they deceived Allah SWT & themselves.
So the people that committed wrong were eliminated. And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
This is nurturing from Allah SWT for His slaves but those return who fear Him. And in all
situation praise be to Him because He SWT gives respite to even the criminals.
Say, "Have you considered: if Allah should take away your hearing and your sight and set a seal uponyour hearts, which deity other than Allah could bring them [back] to you?" Look how we diversify theverses; then they [still] turn away.
Tell them o Nabi SAW that if Allah SWT takes away their faculties of hearing and sight and
seal their hearts who can bring them back except Allah SWT.
Say, "Have you considered: if the punishment of Allah should come to you unexpectedly or manifestly, will any be destroyed but the wrongdoing people?"

Part VII Ayahs 48 - 67
Duty of the messenger, groups of people andthe knowledge and Ability of Allah SWT
Ayahs 48 – 58 are about the duties of the messenegers and the conveying of the message.
And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. So whoever believes andreforms - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
The job of the messengers is to convey the message of Allah SWT & warn the people
against their bad deeds & their consequences and glad tidings for theose who follow
thw guidance. Khawf is always for the uncertain future so there will be no worries if
the messengers teachings are followed and they will not be afraid of meeting Allah
SWT & they will not grieve on leaving the world & about their lives the way they spent.
But those who deny Our verses - the punishment will touch them for their defiant disobedience.
Those who denied and belied the signs of Allah SWT will face the consequences of
their rejection.
Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah orthat I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Isthe blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?"
Ayahs 50 to 60 consolation to Nabi SAW and Allah SWT telling him to say that I don’t
claim to have possession of the treasures of Allah SWT and follow me because of this
or I have any knowledge of the unseen and also I am a king or an angel – anything but
a human being. The ayah is a clear proof of supremacy of Allah SWT and those who
think that any human being can save them should have the understanding that the

messengers with their exalted ranks are sent by Allah SWT for the guidance only si we
should only seek help from Allah SWT and get attached to Him alone.
Tell them that I follow only what is inspired to me, I am just a follower of whatever
sent by Allah SWT. Tell them the one who can see the truth is like the one who is
blind towards it; they two cannot be the same. Then we need to think about this that
whether we have the sight to see and truth or we are like blind.
And warn by the Qur'an those who fear that they will be gathered before their Lord - for them besides Himwill be no protector and no intercessor - that they might become righteous.
The ayah ending on taqwa so it is telling us through the Qur’an to be afraid and
conscious of the gathering before the Lord alone when there will be no intercessor who
can save us, except Allah SWT because the intercession is also by the permission of
Allah SWT.
And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His countenance. Not upon you is anything of their account and not upon them is anything of your account. So were you tosend them away, you would [then] be of the wrongdoers.
Advice for Prophet SAW that don’t be far from those who are invoking Allah SWT
always and seeking His pleasure; the accountability is from Allah SWT and no one is
responsible for anybody else account. The financial status does not matter what
matters is their longing for Allah’s countenance and pleasure and if you leave them
(for the affluent Quraish people) then you will be among the wrongdoers SubhanAllah.

can save us, except Allah SWT because the intercession is also by the permission of
The financial status does not matter what
matters is their longing for Allah’s countenance and pleasure and if you leave them
(for the affluent Quraish people) then you will be among the wrongdoers SubhanAllah.

messengers with their exalted ranks are sent by Allah SWT for the guidance only si we
should only seek help from Allah SWT and get attached to Him alone.

And thus We have tried some of them through others that the disbelievers might say, "Is it these whomAllah has favored among us?" Is not Allah most knowing of those who are grateful?
Allah SWT tests people with other people; knowledgeable with the ignorant, rich with
the poor. The cause of this test is that the provision and the manners/character are
different and everyone is tested according to that. Those who fail the test – the
disbelievers – say that are these the ones Allah has favored among us – looking down
upon them because of their financial status.
Allah SWT increases in guidance those who are grateful and who is more
knowledgeable than Allah SWT about the grateful ones.
And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreedupon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that andcorrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful."
Faith saves us from the fitnah and Allah SWT prescribed mercy upon Himself – salaam is a
mercy from Allah SWT. Mentioned twice in this Surah about the mercy of Allah SWT
and out of His perfect mercy He SWT sends peace and guidance upon those who
follow Him and are grateful for the guidance.
Those who repent after doing wrong and then reforms themselves then Allah SWT is
the Most forgiving – He SWT nurtures and guidance towards the forgiveness.
And thus do We detail the verses, and [thus] the way of the criminals will become evident.
Allah SWT makes the ayahs very clear and detailed so those who are being guided
save themselves from the path of the criminals and try to follow the path of the
believers.

Say, "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you invoke besides Allah." Say, "I will not follow yourdesires, for I would then have gone astray, and I would not be of the [rightly] guided."
Again instruction to Nabi SAW to inform the polytheist that I will not follow your
desires of invoking anyone other than Allah SWT and if I follow your desires then I will
be lost and misguided.
Say, "Indeed, I am on clear evidence from my Lord, and you have denied it. I do not have that for whichyou are impatient. The decision is only for Allah. He relates the truth, and He is the best of deciders."
Continuing the address to the disbelievers that tell them that I am having insight from
my Rabb; the guidance which Allah SWT sends to everyone but you denied it and if
you are asking for the punishment (challenging Nabi SAW that if you are on truth
then bring the punishment on us) then that is not in my hands to hasten it but it is
according to Allah’s command. The judgment belongs to Allah SWT; He SWT makes
the truth clear and He SWT is the best of the judges and the decider.
Say, "If I had that for which you are impatient, the matter would have been decided between me and you,but Allah is most knowing of the wrongdoers."
Tell them if I would have the punishment which you are asking then the matter would
have been finished because I would have brought it upon you. And Allah SWT is the
most knowing of those who do injustice.
