(Genesis 45:1) Rashi comments here that Joseph could not tolerate his Egyptian attendants witnessing the shame of his brothers when he reveals himself to them, so he sends them away. But a more sensible explanation for Joseph’s actions would be that he sends away his attendants because he does not want them to witness his crying, lest he disgrace himself as Viceroy among the Egyptian kingdom. BAT MITZVAH ~ AYA TABAK

SHALOM AND WELCOME … to Jerusalem's premier egalitarian Masorti (Conservative) synagogue. Beit Knesset Moreshet

Yisrael is made up of English speaking olim and native Israelis. Locals and tourists attend our shul on

weekdays, shabbatot, and chagim. Our worldwide Friends Of Moreshet network gives the opportunity

for Jews in all countries to have membership in a captivating Israeli Beit Knesset.

Conservative Judaism is intended to be the nexus between Jewish tradition and the modern world…

Beit Knesset Moreshet Yisrael is that meeting place.

PARSHAT VAYIGASH - פרשת ויגש התודע יוסף אל אחיוולא יכל יוסף להתאפק לכל הנצבים עליו ויקרא הוציאו כל איש מעלי ולא עמד איש אתו ב : – And

Joseph could no longer restrain himself before all of his attendants and he called out “All leave me!”,

so there was no one else present when he made himself known to his brothers. (Genesis 45:1) Rashi

comments here that Joseph could not tolerate his Egyptian attendants witnessing the shame of his

brothers when he reveals himself to them, so he sends them away. But a more sensible explanation for

Joseph’s actions would be that he sends away his attendants because he does not want them to witness

his crying, lest he disgrace himself as Viceroy among the Egyptian kingdom. However, from where

does Rashi learn otherwise? The very next verse reads: עו מצרים וישמע בית ויתן את קלו בבכי וישמ

And he gave aloud his cries and all of Egypt and the House of Pharoh heard. Obviously, Joseph :פרעה

felt no fear of knowledge of his crying, so it is equally obvious that his concern was for his brother's

honor. Rabbi Adam Frank
