InvitationDear Colleagues, dear students,

On behalf of the Agenda Committee and the Local Organizing Committee of the Second European Parkinson’s Disease Summerschool for healthcare students and young professionals, it’s our plea-sure to invite you to an event which is the sequel to a very successfull summerschool format. With the improvements made after evaluation of the first edition, we will present an even stronger con-cept!

We will bring together innovation in education and teamwork between healthcare profession-als to break new grounds in student centered education, patient centered healthcare and patient centered research. The event is hosted from 19th - 27th of July, by students from Ljubljana Faculty of Medicine, Slovenia.

This event is inspired by activities of the European Brain Council and the First European Brain Forum on Parkinson’s Disease in which patients, professionals of different walks of healthcare, industry and policy makers got together to team up against Parkinson’s Disease.

We dedicate our efforts to organise this event to all those whom contribute to improve care and to find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease and to those who struggle with the impact of Parkinson’s Disease on their daily lifes.

Through peer education, new technologies, teamwork and training, we intend to create well refer-enced, innovative, high quality, patient centered research proposals during the summerschool.

The students will return home better equipped to function in a healthcare team and be more aware of a patient centered, humane as well as academic approach to healthcare.

The education and training process will be led entirely by students and the outcomes and contents of the education process will be subject to expert review.

This event is revolutionary due to the fact that:• Students are entirely responsible for the educational process• There will be active participation of academic experts, but their role will not be to prepare a

lecture or to chair a small working group. Their role will be to review, to give feedback and to quality assure the outcomes of the work done by the students. This is an innovative student centered approach to education combining the strength of academic expertise with highly moti-vational educational methods..

• Our Keynote opening lectures will be done by a patient and a carer sharing personal experience and an expert giving an overview on Parkinson’s Disease.

• Next to this we will try to combine academic work with hands on, voluntary service for local patient community in collaboration with the local Parkinson’s Disease Patient Association.

Training & E-learning

TrainersA team of trainers is there to serve as supporters of your teamwork process.

TrainingWhile struggling through large quantities of data and compiling comprehensive presentations, you may be confronted with different work cultures, attitudes, communication difficulties and so on. Training will be tailored to your specific needs. When we speak of leadership training in the agenda, we refer to training of those skills, which you need to get the job done with your team.

ExpertsThe experts listening to our presentations can also be consulted for suggestions on the technical aspects of writing a research project proposal. With experts we mean: authorities from different academic fields, from industry as well as patients

E-learningThe final presentation will be broadcasted over the internet using Adobe Connect, online confer-encing and e-learning technology. An international expert panel consisting of patients, academics, industry representatives and maybe even funders of research will be able to ask questions and cast a vote upon the best research proposal.

WinningAlthough there’s a slight competitive aspect to the summerschool, no one will succeed if we don’t work as a team. It will depend on our funraising success wheather there will be something to win or not.

PreparationPrior knowledge and skills

• No prior knowledge on Parkinson’s Disease is needed, however studying the topic before joining the summerschool will allow you to achieve better outcomes.

• Bringing your own laptop is necessary(!)• Being in the latest years of your study gives you some advantage. • English skills need to be good or excellent in order to participate as much work is done in a team

setting and communication is key too success.• For vocational professions: some relevant work experience is essential.

SummerschoolStudent centered education

Level of pre-existing knowledge on Parkinson’s Disease need-ed to participate: none

BrainstormIn a large group systematic brainstorm, we will identify within the group what is known and what is not known about Par-kinson’s Disease. This brainstorm will cover symptoms, care issues, pathophysiology, pharmacology, epidemiology and so on. Participants will write “keywords” on sticky notes and stick those to the wall. This process is lead by trainers.

OrganisationOrganisation of brainstorm outcomes, through shuffling of the sticky notes on the wall into coherent groups. Themes and work assignments will be defined.

Heathcare student teamsStudents from different fields with an interest in Parkinson’s Disease will be mixed in groups and assignments will be given based upon the brainstorm. There will be 6 teams of students, with 4 members. On the end of each day these teams present a synthesis of the main findings of a full day of work in 10 min-utes. A Hand out may be supplied to cover more details than a short presentation may fit. You will present towards a panel which may consist of patient as well as academic experts. This means that your use of language must be adjusted to both types of audience.

This also assures that students who knew nothing at the be-ginning, will get a fair chance to raise their level of knowledge from basics to expert level in a matter of days.

Team TasksTasks must be distributed within the group and roles need to be divided: keeping track of time, administering literature search, keeping reference lists, writing down key findings from articles, preparing hand outs, preparing the final presentation, sharing information between groups to prevent overlap and double work, keeping up a team spirit.





ParticipantsSelection

The participation to this event is limited to 30 students and junior professionals from all over Europe. We aim to select the most talented students and junior professionals, with proven leadership skills to participate in this high stakes event.

We are particularly looking for participants with backgrounds in neuroscience, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, psychology, fysiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy. For vocational professions we require some years work experience additionally. For academic backgrounds we look for students in their final years. In the field of medicine we kindly welcome residents in the fields of general prac-tice, internal medicine, rehabilitation medicine, neurology, neurosurgery and public health.

Application process is supported by the student associations involved (EPSA, ENSA, EMSA and EFPSA) and representatives of these associations are involved in the procedure.

All applicants have a chance to get enrolled upon submission of a CV, however priority will be given to 1. Students whom contribute to Gender/Geographical/Professional balance of the team2. Students with a letter proving voluntary work for a patient organisation3. Students with previous national or international board experience in a student organisation.4. Students with a letter of recommandation from an academic leader (professor).

Participation costsStudent registration is 300 EUR, professional registration is 450 EUR.

Early registration discount: if our sponsorship acquisition is successfull, we offer a 150 EUR discount on all registrations for which payment is received before april 15th. We included a similar offer in our first summerschool and we succeeded to reimburse the participants (this is not a guarantee however, it’s only our dedication).

Pre-Summerschool WorkshopIf you are accepted to the summerschool, you have the option to sign up for an ad-ditional workshop which will give you a flying start into the summerschool. You will practice scientific literature searching, skills to browse through key information fast, practice scientific reasoning and get familiar with IT tools used during summer-school. All these ingredients were sug-gested for extra training by participants of the first Parkinson Summerschool for your benefit!

The end products of this summerschool are a series of well referenced, patient centered research proposals. On the end of every day students present their work to a panel of experts consisting of representatives of: Patients, Academia, Industry

After students present their work, the panel will ask questions for clarification and correct errors and unbalanced perspectives on the research landscape by giving the students some advice on how to continue their work.

The final research proposal has three review rounds: 1. by themselves (peer review)2. by junior researchers (locally, internationally through e-mail).3. by experts of Academia, Patients and Industry and funders of research (online presentations

through Adobe Connect)

Expert review:In the last round of review, we will allow the reviewers to ask questions, to rate the presentations and the proposals and to make a bid or a job offer to the team of students to take their initiative to the next level (carrying it out) or to present the initiative to a wider audience at a relevant profes-sional conference. This is THE opportunity to scout talent in the Parkinson’s Disease research arena.

Project Agenda

This event is not just a summerschool. The design of the summerschool, outcomes and evaluation all have a broader purpose. We aim for the following:• Break down those professional barriers being an obstacle for progress• Improve dialogue between healthcare professionals• Increase the interest from students and junior professionals for a healthcare carreer to also

include research• Equip talented students and professionals with the necessary skills to help change the landscape

of healthcare and education.• Foster active engagement of (future) healthcare professionals with current problems of

healthcare.• Encourage innovation in education, through disseminating non-traditional educational

approaches.• Create a partnership between students, professionals and patients to advocate innovation in

education and teamwork in healthcare.• Contribute to patient safety initiatives through training of leadership skills in future professionals.

Funding ResearchProject Auction

On the end of the summerschool, last day 28th of July, on 15:30. Final presentations take place of the research project proposal. These presentations will be broadcasted over the internet live, if we can ar-range sufficient sponsorship. We wish to use the latest IT technologies for this (e.g. Adobe Connect).

We will try to gather academic experts and funders of research to listen to the project presentations and to make a bid:

Our FinanceNon profit

This summerschool is a non profit event. We do however start building a strategy for continuity this year in order to establish a more robust organisational and financial infrastructure.

Locally:• Members of the local student group shall receive up to a 1000 EUR towards dissemination of out-

comes as a subsistence for travels towards international conferences, to be spread over active con-tributing members in the local organising committee, if fundraising is successfull.

• Local organising committee members will have the opportunity to join a number of professional conferences as a volunteer in exchange for a free registration.

• Expenses made for fundraising, yielding significant contributions to the event budget may be pro-posed to be added to the budget of the event if not covered otherwise.

Internationally:• If fundraising is successfull we aim to:

• Retain our accessibility for lower income countries• become student members of the European Brain Council• have our budget reviewed by CGR guideline for pharma sponsoring (http://www.cgr.nl/) to

spend industry money as ethical as possible.• professionalise our brochure and report design process as well as our advertisement campaign,

by budgetting activities dealing with this.• professionalise our accounting and financial reporting by dedicating budget to this• pay our student trainers a small wage for their 9 days of training in order to get the best Euro-

pean student trainers at our event.• professionalise our event coordination • professionalise our scientific outcomes dissemination and publication practices.

Any excess funds beyond this, will be invested in the next edition of the summerschool.
