BICYCLES and SCOOTERS Some of the "Panthers" like to ride their bike or scooter to school. If you have your parent's permission, and are willing to follow safety rules, then you may choose this as your way to get to and from school. 1. Helmets are highly recommended.

2. Bikes must be parked in the racks immediately upon your arrival at school. You must

walk your bike or scooter on the playground and on the sidewalk in front of the

school.

3. Leave other bikes alone. Ride only your bike or scooter. This will avoid the possibility

of damaging another.

4. Walk your bike or scooter to and from the street.

5. For your safety and to follow the law, ride only one person per bicycle or scooter.

6. Remember---the school will not be responsible for stolen bicycles or scooters or

damage that may occur while on school grounds. Don't forget to lock up your bike.

7. You may skateboard or scooter to school, however, you must walk on the sidewalk in

front of the school and on the playground.

DOGS

All dogs must be on a leash and must stay on the grassy area north of Park View School, on the grassy easement between the sidewalk and Elizabeth Street on the west side of the building, or on the pond path on the east side of the building. No pet dogs should be on sidewalks or school grounds between 8:15-3:35pm. This is for the safety of the students and the dogs.

BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES

All Park View Panthers need to follow all school and classroom expectations. The purpose of our time together is to grow academically, social-emotionally, and physically. In order to be as successful as we can, we must cooperate with one another and live by the Park View Pledge: I Promise to Learn (Be Ready), I Promise to Care about Myself and Others (Be Respectful), I Promise to Do My Very Best (Be Responsible). As we all know, there are choices that we make as to how we behave. Some choices are better than others. There are also consequences for the choices we make. The following list will help you understand that certain behaviors are unacceptable. Your classroom teacher will review building and classroom expectations with you. *Parents, please review the Student Harassment and Student Discipline sections of “Inside Your Schools”, available on the sd44.org website, with your children. UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR at Park View School (Examples include but are not limited to:) Minor Problem Behaviors (Minor misbehaviors will generally be handled by the teachers or referred to the office).

Running in school Horseplay

Playing contact sports during recess Inappropriate Language Work Avoidance

Major Problem Behaviors (Major misbehavior results in an office referral and a consequence). Fighting/Physical assault Displaying disrespect/disobedience to adults Jeopardizing the health or safety of students or staff Harassment or intimidation of other students Being in a classroom or other building area without permission Obscene language/gestures Leaving the school grounds or classroom without permission. Sexual Harassment Possession of a weapon or look-alike weapon (toy) Vandalism Stealing

If you are riding the bus, you must follow all our expectations above. If your behavior interferes with the bus driver being able to drive the bus safely, you will lose the privilege of riding the bus until you can correct your behavior.

Page 8: PARK VIEW PANTHERS’ HANDBOOK€¦ · Fax: 630-620-3749 School Colors: Black and White . Dear Park View Student, Welcome to the home of the Park View Panthers! We are all very proud

The “Park View Pledge” is said each morning to remind us all of the expectations at school. All of our school-wide and classroom expectations are created using this pledge; I Promise to Learn- Be Ready I Promise to Care About Myself and Others- Be Respectful I Promise to do My Very Best- Be Responsible

CONSEQUENCES OF UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR A school-wide discipline plan is used with all students. Any student who is referred for a major problem behavior will receive an age appropriate consequence based on the severity and/or frequency of the offense. The student will also receive a G (goal setting) on the Life Skills section of the report card. Any student receiving multiple consequences for minor and/or major problem behaviors in any one grading period may be scheduled for a conference with the parent, teacher, and/or principal. Students who engage in major problem behaviors or repeated minor problem behaviors will also receive a G (goal setting) on the Life Skills section of the report card. During a Lunch ‘Goal Setting’ Meeting (11:40-12:30) or an after-school Goal Setting Meeting (3:15-4:00), students will work with an adult to create multiple positive choices to replace the negative behavior. All students will be under the direct supervision of a teacher or the principal. Students will be required to complete a behavior analysis sheet to understand more clearly what needs to change and positive options. Consequences may also involve loss of privileges and activities. *Note: Students will be kept after-school only after parent contact has been made.

HOMEWORK Homework is a very important part of learning. We expect all homework to be done well and on time. If you are in grades 4 and 5 you will have a special assignment notebook that will help you remember what you need to do. If you have not done your homework, you will be required to complete it at lunchtime or after school. Remember these four easy tips: 1. Don't put your homework off to the last minute. 2. Have a special homework time and a quiet place to do it at home. 3. Ask your parents to check your assignment notebook daily to make sure you have completed everything. 4. Don't forget to have a special place to keep your completed homework so you don't forget it in the morning.

SNACKS AT SCHOOL Each grade level has a specific time scheduled during the day for snacking. You must bring your own snacks. There is an approved snack list that was in your Take Home folder. Please use that snack list to plan the snack you will bring. Only snacks that are on the approved list are allowable in class. You may not share your snack with another student and you must keep it at your desk. When you finish, wipe your desk off using the classroom wipes.

SAFETY IS IMPORTANT

Fifth grade students from our school serve as safety patrols. You will see them standing with their bright patrol belts at the corners near our school. They are there to assist all of us in crossing the street in a safe manner. It is expected that all students and adults will listen and follow the patrols directions. If you cross Greenfield at Elizabeth Street, don’t forget to say “hello” to our crossing guard. An additional crossing guard will help you cross safely at the school driveway. Remember, if you cross Elizabeth Street, you must always use the crosswalk located directly in front of the school. Never cross in the bus zone area. If you walk to and from Park View make sure that you and your parents plan the safest route to school and that you take that route each day. You should discuss this with your parents. Walking with other students increases safety so pair up, if you can, with someone that lives near you.

It is important that all Park View Panthers remain safe when waiting to be picked up from school. Wait on the sidewalk until your car reaches the sidewalk. Then you can enter the car. Only cross at the crosswalk in the south parking lot when your car is parked at the island. Never enter a car waiting in the drop-off, pick-up loop until it reaches the sidewalk. Always use the sidewalks when walking on the south side of the building. Make sure you and the people picking you up review and follow the drop-off/pick-up procedures, so everyone is safe.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Park View School sponsors a Student Council. The goal of Student Council is to help the world, the community, and our school. All students in grades 3-5 are members of the Council. Each 2nd -5th grade classroom has two representatives that attend the monthly meetings. We will be electing our officers and representatives in September. All students elected to the Student Council board are expected to be good role models for their peers. They will be removed from their elected position if they consistently do not follow school-wide or classroom expectations. The faculty advisors are Mrs. Tomasello and Mrs. Ostrander. The Student Council has table sales several times a year, which carries paper, pencils, and erasers, etc. at very good prices. Please support their efforts. The Student Council organizes many activities such as the “Warm Heart Walk-a-thon” spirit days, school recycling, and food drives. The Council is open to ideas from all the students.

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) serves an important role in preparing you to participate in a highly technological and changing society. Success today and in the future depends on the ability to access and utilize information. The LRC is a place where considerable information on many subjects is available. It is a place, which strives to invite and encourage learning and exploration of new ideas. You will come to the Learning Center to work in the computer lab and to check out books. You are encouraged to visit the LRC at other times as well. Most books and magazines may be checked out for two weeks. Materials in the reference collection may also be borrowed on an overnight basis. Patrons can check out two books at a time unless the teacher gives permission for additional materials due to a special project. You are expected to be responsible for the materials you borrow. You will be expected to pay for lost or damaged books. Please pay promptly as this helps us to purchase replacements so all students have the opportunity to experience our collection.

1. You may bring a lunch to school. Milk is available and may be purchased at a cost of .50 each.

2. You may purchase a hot lunch (milk included) for the cost of $3.00 each. The menu is published online monthly. Salad, tuna salad sandwich, peanut butter and jelly or pita and hummus are also available daily in place of the main entrees. More information on how and when to purchase lunches and milk will be included in a letter from our lunch provider. Hot lunch is subject to change occasionally. Breakfast/lunch menus are always available online at sd44.org and on our webpage under Parents and then Lunch Menus. Breakfast is available for $1.85 and should be ordered by you during morning attendance the day prior. 3. Your parent can sign you out and take you to lunch off premises but must sign you back in upon return. 4. In order to provide a safe and relaxed atmosphere during the lunch hour at school, you must abide by the established lunchroom expectations. Directions given by the lunchroom supervisors must be followed. 5. A Lunch Advisory Council consisting of 2 students from each classroom meets on a monthly basis with Ms. D’Amore. The council determines all special lunchtime activities. They also give suggestions to improve lunchtime. 6. Please note: All lunch balances must be paid in full by the end of the school year. 7. Sometimes parents like to drop off a special lunch for a special occasion. It is important that you do not share any of your special lunch with other students because of possible food allergies and dietary restrictions.

LUNCHROOM BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS 1. Remember "Character Counts"(even at lunchtime). All students are expected to follow the behavioral expectations included in the lunchroom behavior matrix; and directions from the lunch supervisors. 2. You may talk at voice levels 1 or 2; shouting, yelling, whistling, and other noises, etc. are not permitted. 3. Wash your hands before coming to the lunchroom. 4. LOST AND FOUND The "Lost and Found" box is located just outside the gym doors. If you lose something check the box. If you find something, check for a name. If the item has a name, bring it to the student's classroom or to the office. The best way to keep your possessions out of the Lost and Found box is to always put your name (first and last) on things you bring to school.

USE OF THE SCHOOL TELEPHONE

You are allowed to use the phone in the office if the call is urgent, or to let your parents know you are staying after school for a school related activity. You must always ask permission of an adult before making your call. All phone calls must be short and to the point.

ALL ELECTRONICS

We discourage cell phones and smart watches at school. If you must bring them (for safety reasons) we expect all students to keep their smart watches and cell phones turned off during school hours and in their backpack. We are not responsible for lost or stolen electronics. We also discourage electronics of any kind at school. If you bring any to school they must stay OFF and in your backpack. The school is not responsible if you bring electronics to school and they get lost, broken or stolen. Keeping them at home is preferred. If a classroom reward involves students bringing electronics, please follow the directions the teacher sends home. This is always optional as the school can provide students with electronics during reward time. The school is not responsible for lost, broken and stolen electronics.

This page is for parents….. If your child will not be attending school for any reason, you must call the school office (827-4041) by 9:00 AM to notify us. You may leave a message the night before for your convenience. Please refer to the Absences/Tardiness section of Inside Your Schools for important information. Reasons of personal illness, bereavement or serious family illness, major religious holidays or other exceptional reasons approved by the principal are considered excused. Absences for any other reason than these mentioned will be considered unexcused. Unexcused absences will be recorded and include: absent without a parent/guardian phone call, absent without reason, vacation, weather, sport/extra curricular activities or competitions, take your child to work, etc. Please see Inside Your Schools at www.sd44.org for more information.

Data shows students who miss nine or less days of school benefit academically. Please make that a goal for your child. It boosts academic success. All Kindergartners will enter and leave the building at entrance #1. All 1st – 5th graders enter through entrance 4 and 5 at the East end of the building. It is important that all students adhere to these points of entry to keep the student traffic inside the building smooth with no incidences or injuries. We appreciate your help with this.

If you drive your child to school, please abide by the street signs. Do not park or stop next to a yellow curb. This is our crosswalk and bus zone. You may use our drop-off area but please remember it is “STOP AND DROP” only. Children should be instructed to cross Elizabeth at the crosswalk only. Never double park on Elizabeth or in our parking loop, as this practice is not safe for students. When picking up students in the loop, stay in your vehicle and wait until you reach the sidewalk to let your children enter/exit the vehicle, only when your vehicle is AT the sidewalk. Move your vehicle up in the pick up loop and be patient.

Please set a good example by using the crosswalk yourself and follow the directions of the patrols. If students witness adults crossing in areas without crosswalks they will copy that behavior. Safety is our number one priority. Remember Elizabeth Street is one way going north between Greenfield and Brookfield from 8:00- 9:00 AM and 3:00-4:00 PM on school days. Please excuse the inconvenience it may cause. There is no pick-up or drop-off in the staff parking lot, ever.

All building doors, including the main door near the office, are locked each day. Access to the building will be through the main door #1 only. This will allow us to have a safe environment for the children. Never attempt to enter the building with your child at their student entry door. All visitors must sign in, show identification to the secretary and have your ID scanned into our security system. If you would like to visit with a teacher before or after school, please call the teacher ahead of time to set up an appointment. This will help every child’s school day run smoothly, without a loss of instruction time.

Many parents are interested in assisting the PTA in their many ventures. If you love having fun, and meeting great people, contact Mia Gonzales, our PTA President at [email protected] or 312- 545-4284.
