NOTES FROM FATHER BOB…

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2015 Jesus is clear and direct, and there is no mistaking his instructions to the Twelve. In action and in word, the apostles are to communicate clearly the Good News of the one who sent them. The austerity of lifestyle commanded by Jesus is not in itself virtuous; Jesus knows, however, that comfort is often the enemy of zeal. If the apostles were encumbered by possessions, they could be distracted from their task. If they were confident of their daily bread, they could become complacent. If they were not well received, they might doubt their mission, so they must make a clear break from places that do not welcome the word. Everything about them must proclaim exactly what they are about. The prophet Amos similarly has a strong and clear sense of purpose. Amaziah orders him to depart to Judah, but Amos knows by whom he has been sent, and to whom his loyalty lies; he cannot deny the Lord. God has called him, God has given him a mission, and God must be obeyed. Everything about him must proclaim exactly what he is about. An apostle is only able to obey, and to endure the hardships which can follow from obedience, if he or she is committed to the one who commands, and believes the message which is to be proclaimed. The reading from Ephesians leaves us in no doubt as to the nature of the God who commands us, and the just cause we have for rejoicing in the message we bear. God is the God who has ‘blessed us with all the spiritual blessings of heaven’. The message is the ‘truth’ and the ‘good news of our salvation.’ It remains for us to be simple and direct in our proclamation. The preaching of the apostles brings about a crisis to those who hear them. Unclean spirits are confronted; the inhospitable are abandoned; devils are cast out, and sicknesses are cured. Clearly, the word the apostles hear effects a change in hearers and bearers alike. Clear and simple, like the good use of language, the gospel message bears fruit. After Jesus left the apostles, they would miss his guidance and instruction. For this reason, he sent his Holy Spirit upon them, so that his mission would continue. In this same Spirit, we become apostles. In the footsteps of the Twelve, we preach repentance. We face the demons that haunt the human soul. We bring wholeness to those who are sick, praying for God’s healing. We do as we have been commanded by the Lord, praying the Lord will work in us, amongst us and through us. In the preaching of the apostles, that same mission which we continue, the judgment of the world has begun. All who meet the apostles of Christ are challenged by the word of God to declare themselves for the Kingdom. The apostles are challenged too, being under the same word, subject to the same judgment. To be apostles of Christ, we must be like Amos. We must know that we are sent by God, and cannot be deflected from our mission by the discomfort we cause to others and ourselves. We must be like the writer of the Letter to the Ephesians, who rejoices in the blessings we have all received from God in Christ. And we must be like the Twelve, obedient to Christ’s command to live the Good News simply and directly. Blessings,

Father Bob Pastor

FOOD PANTRY UPDATE We greatly appreciate the donations you made towards the July 9 Food Pantry. Now our shelves are in need of replenishment! Most needed items at this time include canned vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, boxed potatoes and other

boxed side dishes, canned diced tomatoes, assorted pasta noodles, pasta sauce, crackers/ snacks, and pinto beans.

We are also requesting school supply donations to distribute in August to our client families, including pencils, colored pencils, pens, crayons, markers, pocket folders, erasers, single subject spiral notebooks and loose leaf paper.

Monetary donations are also appreciated. Checks should be written to St. Cletus Social Concerns/School Supplies.

Thank you on behalf of our client families. So many are still struggling with loss of job, reduction of hours, medical challenges, etc., and are most grateful for our assistance. SVDP RUMMAGE SALE 2015 We received many treasures during the busy week of rummage sale preparation, but the greatest treasures of all were the awesome people who supported this endeavor! This rummage sale was the brainchild of Maureen Soldat 8 years ago, when she suggested the sale as a way to bring all ministries together for a common cause. She continues to be the tireless volunteer chair each year…with lots of help from old time and new time friends. Many of these amazing people were present every day, accepting or picking up donations, organizing, checking that all electric items worked, making runs to the SVDP bins with soft goods that somehow made their way in with “acceptable” donations, sharing with the rest of the crew special “finds”…energetically doing whatever it took to make the sale a success. We dedicated our efforts to Maureen’s husband, Bob, who is in heaven watching out for us. Our weather was the best yet, with no power outages, no severe storms or floods! The crew that went to pick up furniture/larger donations worked well beyond the scheduled hours. Our supporters blanketed the community with window signs, lawn signs, e-mail blasts, and good old fashioned “word of mouth” publicity! I cannot say enough about the best ever clean-up crew! This intergenerational parish event raised approximately $18,500, our record high. Again, thank you to all the volunteers, to those who generously donated items for sale, as well as to our maintenance and parish staff, who adjusted their regular schedules to accommodate our needs. Let us not forget the most important fact of all: this was no ordinary rummage sale. It was a labor of Christian love, because the proceeds will make a real difference in many lives, as our St. Vincent de Paul volunteers continue to visit and help people in need of our financial assistance.

We assemble in prayer…remembering that our efforts are in Jesus’

name…to provide human necessities for our brothers & sisters.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OUTREACH: EDUCATING OURSELVES, ON THE PATH TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING.

ARTICLE 3, Part 1 - Myths and Facts about Domestic Violence

Myth: Domestic violence is a private family matter. Fact: Domestic violence is everyone’s business. Keeping domestic violence secret helps no one, has been shown to harm children, incurs substantial costs to society, and serves to perpetuate abuse through learned patterns of behavior. Myth: Most of the time, domestic violence is not really that serious. Fact: Domestic violence is an illegal act in the U.S. and is considered a crime with serious repercussions. Although there are aspects of domestic violence (e.g., emotional, psychological, spiritual abuse) that may not be considered criminal in a legal sense, serious and long-lasting physical, emotional and spiritual harms can, and often do, occur. Each and every act of domestic violence needs to be taken seriously. Myth: Anger management programs are briefer, more cost effective than, and just as successful as certified batterer intervention programs. Fact: Although briefer and less expensive than certified batterer intervention programs, anger management programs are not effective to address the deep-rooted issues of batterers. Myth: Domestic violence is an impulse control or anger management problem. Fact: Abusers act deliberately and with forethought. Abusers choose whom to abuse. For example, an abuser will selectively batter his wife but not his boss. Myth: Victims provoke their partners’ violence. Fact: Whatever problems exist in a relationship, the use of violence is never justifiable or acceptable. There is NO EXCUSE for domestic violence. Myth: Domestic violence is bad, but it happens elsewhere. It doesn’t happen in my community, my neighborhood, my culture, my religion or my congregation. Fact: Domestic violence happens to people of every educational and socio-economic level. Domestic violence happens in all races, religions and age groups. Domestic violence occurs in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships. Myth: It is easy for a victim to leave her abuser, so if she doesn’t leave, it means she likes the abuse or is exaggerating how bad it is. Fact: Fear, lack of safe options, and inability to survive economically prevent many women from leaving abusive relationships. Threats of harm, including death to the victim and/or children, keep many battered women trapped in abusive situations. The most dangerous time for a battered woman is when she attempts to leave the relationship, or when the abuser discovers that she has made plans to leave. Look for Part 2 in next week’s Canticle.

“He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick-- no food, no sack, no money in their belts.” (Mark 6:8)

How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when they ventured out to serve God. Today, we make our journey through life more difficult because of all the material baggage that we drag along. Yet, the more we can let go of, the freer we are to serve God with love and joy.

You can make a difference in the lives of God’s little ones. Consider the call to connect Jesus’ story to the story of our everyday lives. You need only a desire to serve. Your life will be enriched by participating in a special way with our children. The Religious Education Program at St. Cletus is currently looking for adults and High School students that are interested in helping our young people of the parish encounter Christ. You do not need to have any previous background in teaching, just a desire to share your faith and help others encounter Jesus! If you are interested and would like to know more about being a catechist, please give me a call at (708)215-5415 or e-mail [email protected] or [email protected].
