Living the Paschal Mystery
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 6 & 7, 2016
For most of us, Jesus does not come in dramatic and miracu-
lous ways and bid us to follow him, but in the ordinary events
of daily living. The gospel invites us to look at the simple
ways we live the Gospel to indicate the ways we have
changed our purpose in life to follow Jesus. For example, in
the generosity of so many volunteers, in the faithfulness of
husbands and wives, in the unselfishness of pastoral workers,
in the uncomplaining suffering of the sick, in the gracious
wisdom of the elderly we see faithful followers of Jesus liv-
ing his teachings. Our yes response is to imitate these good
behaviors and by doing so we are faithful followers. Living
the paschal mystery means we respond to God in these little,
everyday things. The astonishing thing about this Good
News is that we are all made worthy followers simply be-
cause God calls. We allow ourselves to be caught.

“Dante and the Glorious Liberty
of the Children of God”
The modern concept of liberty is "freedom from
interference", with conscience no longer calling
us to duty. Dr. Anthony Esolen from Providence
College contends that the writer Dante, in his Di-
vine Comedy, reminds us what a human person is and what
freedom is for. Prof. Esolen, an acclaimed translator of The
Divine Comedy, will present a lecture on this topic on Tues-
day, February 16, 2016 from 7:30 - 8:30 pm on the University
of Delaware campus, 206 Kirkbride Hall. The presentation is
free, open to the public, and sponsored by the Society of
Catholic Scholars of Delaware, the UD Department of Philos-
ophy, and the St. Thomas More Society of Delaware. For
information, contact Mary Ann McLane, [email protected],

Diocese News Are you Being Called to God? In today’s first reading, Isaiah tells us that when the Lord called him
to serve as a prophet, he protested because he was unworthy. Some-
times young men and women look at the priesthood or religious life
and say to themselves “I could never do that; I’m not holy that
way.” Guess what? All the baptized are called to be holy, but if we
had to be perfect to be a priest, deacon or a nun we wouldn’t have
any priests, deacons or nuns! When God calls someone, He gives
that person the grace he or she needs to live out their vocation. If
you think God might be calling you to the priesthood or to religious
life, call or write Father Norman Carroll, Diocesan Director of
Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, voca-
[email protected]). Be sure to visit our website: www.cdow.org/
vocations!
Marriage Moments Mardi Gras allows us a last fling before the Lenten peniten-
tial season. Do something frivolous together. Eat something
decadent, give each other a massage, wear wild make-up, enjoy
being foolish. If you're the uptight type, let go. You'll have six
weeks to exercise your over-responsible side.
Parenting Pointers Ash Wednesday is February 10. Prepare for Lent by
talking with your family about how this can be a time
of generosity and mercy (forgiveness). For the weeks ahead,
I'll give you ideas about how your family can live more simp-
ly. Use this week to think of your own.
Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy Information about the Extraordinary Jubilee of
Mercy is available at a special Vatican website –
www.im.va. Diocese of Wilmington events that are tied into
the Jubilee of Mercy will be announced on the diocesan web-
site – www.cdow.org/mercy. The Extraordinary Jubilee of
Mercy will conclude on the Solemnity of Christ the King on
November 20, 2016.
Learn about the life of the first person born in our
Diocese to have an official cause for canonization. The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington has produced and released a
short video on the life of Maryland Eastern Shore native, the Rev.
Paul Wattson, SA, (1863-1940) - also known as Father Paul of Gray-
moor - who may be the first person born in what is now our Diocese,
to be a canonized saint.
Father Paul was born in Millington, Maryland. He founded the Fran-
ciscan Friars of the Atonement, initiated the Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity that we celebrate each January, started programs for
the homeless and those who suffer from addiction, co-founded the
Catholic Near East Welfare Association, published magazines, pro-
duced radio programs, and much more.
A link to the video, “Father Paul of Graymoor, Apostle of Unity and
Charity: A Great Call to be Radical,” is on the Diocese of Wilming-
ton’s homepage – www.cdow.org, and is available on the Diocesan
YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/dioceseofwilm.
You can worry about the priest shortage in our
Church today – or you can do something about it –
join the Diocesan Vocations Guild. The Guild is open to
Catholics from within or with ties to the Diocese of Wilming-
ton who pray for, encourage and support the bishop, priests,
religious, deacons and seminarians of the diocese. The objec-
tives of the Guild are achieved through prayer, service and
the affirmation of the importance of the priesthood, diaconate
and the religious life to the mission of the diocese. For more
information, visit cdow.org/dvg.
