June 17 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Treasures from our Traditions The reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ’s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God’s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self‑giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient. Yet the act of giving from our abundance, and attending to the needs of the poor, opens us up to participation in the changes the Reign of God requires. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Faith in our Future Funds As you are aware, one of the items that was included in the Saint Anne Case Statement for the Archdiocesan “Faith in our Future” capital campaign was a donation toward a homeless shelter, to be built by the Shalom Center of Kenosha. The “Faith in our Future” campaign, which concluded in the Fall of 2011, raised $323,643 for St. Anne, of which $32,363 was reserved for that project. After numerous discussions with Parish Council and Trustees, as well as with members of the Human Concerns Commission at St. Anne, and given the reality that this project will not be realized by the Shalom Center in a reasonable time frame; it was decided that this money should be returned to the Human Concerns budget at St. Anne, to aid their efforts in supporting needs in our community. According to Archdiocesan norms, we are not allowed to invent a new Case Statement, which would deviate the funds to an entirely new category or project, separate from the spirit in which they were given. Therefore, it is appropriate and necessary that they remain within the Human Concerns envelope. These funds will help to fund the Human Concerns budget over the coming years and address real needs in our parish and community. If you have any questions or feedback, please call me at the parish office (262) 942-8473 or email me at [email protected]. You may also contact any of the Trustees or members of Parish Council.

The Mission Trip to South Dakota On Saturday, June 16th, 36 missionaries from Saint Anne and other Kenosha parishes left for our Mission Trip to the Native American Reservation in Rosebud, South Dakota. This week we will work with two other groups; one Catholic youth group from Nebraska and a Methodist youth group from Milwaukee in serving the needs of the Rosebud community as serving as models of Jesus’ great commission to bring the Gospel to all we meet. Our service will entail working with children, community needs, and some home repair and restoration. It will also be an intense learning experience for those of us on the journey. We thank those who are supporting our effort – those who have bought stock in the Mission Trip and those who supported our Brat Sale and Car Wash. We still are in need of funds; it is not too late to make a contribution to off-set our expenses. We will return to Kenosha and celebrate Mass at Saint Mary’s on Saturday, June 23rd. Please keep us all in your prayers as we travel and work in the spirit of Jesus and as representatives of Saint Anne Parish and the Catholic Church of Kenosha.

Adult Initiation

Ministry Most of us who are Catholic began our faith journey as infants. Our parents brought us to church, baptized us, and provided faith formation at home, at the parish, or at a Catholic school. Our Church is blessed each year with a growing number of adults who have, in their journey of faith, heard the call to enter the Catholic faith. At Saint Anne we support and nourish that call through two aspects of Adult Initiation Ministry: The Rites of Initiation of Christian Adults (RCIA) and Adult Confirmation.

RCIA is a process that spans about a year of discussion, prayer, formation, and discernment. Unbaptized adults or those who have had little formation in a Christian community are invited to join with other candidates in this process which we share with other Kenosha parishes. Early in the journey we meet twice a month for formation and prayer. In the Fall our process intensifies and we meet weekly in our parish to share faith stories, to learn more about God and the Church, and to break open Sunday scripture. At critical points in the journey, we celebrate and bless the candidates with ritual and prayer.

Adult Confirmation is a shorter process of prayer and formation designed for Catholic Adults who have not celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation and for adults from other Christian communities who have experienced a deeper faith formation in their lives and who are well grounded in the Catholic Church. These candidates meet over nine weeks to explore the Catholic faith and to share concerns and issues of formation. Each year we offer two nine-week cycles.

Members of the Adult Initiation Ministry assist our candidates by sharing faith experiences, discussing the power of scripture in their lives, and by welcoming them into the life of the community. Some take on teaching roles while others assist by sharing the journey. The ministry is one of hospitality, and grace, and witness. We invite anyone interested in adult initiation to contact us at any time. We are already meeting with individuals who are considering beginning the RCIA process. Our formal series of meeting for both RCIA and Adult Confirmation will resume in the Fall. We also encourage members of the community to join us as discussion leaders, mentors, or ministers of hospitality for both RCIA and Adult Confirmation. Contact Ed Duncklee {262-694-0026 / [email protected]} to inquire.

Parish Outreach Ministry is Looking for Help "Community Mission" -- We are exploring the opportunity to do some missionary work in our own Kenosha/Pleasant Prairie neighborhoods during Advent of this year. The concept is to target neighborhoods in which we can talk about Christ, do some Christmas Caroling and invite our fellow neighbors to St. Anne events and Mass. Volunteers needed to coordinate effort -- identifying neighborhoods, soliciting volunteer families of St. Anne to do the missionary work, and coordinating the date and event. This has been done successfully in other parts of the country. With Fr. Bob's past experience in this work, he will lead us in this effort. All parishioners are welcome to participate. Families with youth 6th -- 12th grade are encouraged to consider this opportunity. If you feel called to be a part of this effort, contact Margie Mandli at [email protected]. St. Anne's BEHOLD Event -- Parish Outreach will be developing a calendar for our Behold events, which have typically included Praise music, Eucharistic Adoration, Reconciliation and a reflection. We are looking for youth 6th grade-12th grade to give input on this program. We are looking for 5-10 individuals who could serve as a "focus group" to determine what sorts of topics you'd wish to hear about, what day of the week is best for youth, and what sorts of activities might youth wish to include in these events. Please contact the parish office, [email protected] or 262-942-8300, if you'd like to participate.

Fortnight for Freedom – Special Masses with Archbishop Jerome Listecki & Bishop Donald Hying The US Bishops have suggested that fourteen days from June 21 to July 4 be dedicated to a “fortnight for freedom” – a great hymn of prayer for our country. This special period of prayer, study, catechesis and public action will support the ongoing struggle to protect religious freedom and conscience rights. Archbishop Listecki will be the main celebrant for two Masses during this time period: 4 pm Mass on June 23 at St. Matthew Parish, Oak Creek, one of the oldest parishes in our archdiocese, and a Mass on the Fourth of July at 9 am at St. Mary’s Visitation Parish, Elm Grove. Bishop Hying will be the celebrant for the 7:30 pm Mass at Holy Angels, West Bend. More information can be found on the archdiocese’s website (www.archmil.org) or by calling Annette Basaldua at 414-758-2201.
