The Season of Advent It seems watching TV that the Christmas season began in September. Advent is the beginning of the new Church year and heralds approach of the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. While it is a festive time of the year, it also is a new beginning and a time to reflect on the meaning of the birth of Christ. In the midst of all of the preparations and the events, I would suggest that families take some quiet time and pause and reflect during this preparation time. Perhaps setting up an Advent Wreath and coming together to recite the Joyful Mysteries of the Ro-sary, visiting the church as a family when it is quiet to pray before the Blessed Sacrament, or participate in one of the numerous charitable programs this time of year. So when that special day arrives, we do have something to offer to Jesus.

*******

Please Take Note Next Sunday, December 8, would have been cele-brated as the Feast of the Immaculate Conception—the patronal feast of the United States. As it falls on a Sunday, the feast is transferred to the Monday, De-cember 9. The obligation to attend Mass on the day is NOT transferred. This year, the feast is not a holy day of obligation

*******

As Advent begins a new Church year, it is worth noting that around this time we have to send to the Archdiocese a report of the previous year’s (September to August) sacramental activity.

Why Knots Blanket Ministry

Please join us in a ministry of making blankets to be donated to local hospitals and other places in need. This ministry is open to all ages. All you need to know how to do is cut and tie knots. This is a Ministry to Mary. We will be creating fleece blankets by cutting and tying knots. The knots represents the knots in our lives and we will ask Mary to pray for us and help us to untie those knots. Volunteers are encouraged to bring:

2 coordinating pieces of fleece (baby: 1 yard of each color, kid: 1.5 yards of each color, adult: 2 yards of each color) Ruler and yard stick and sharp scissors or a monetary donation ($15 to $20) to help supply materials. The group meets the first Wednesday of every month at St. Stephens School in the cafeteria from 6 to 7:30pm. Thank you to all those who attended the first meeting and made many beautiful blankets. We look forward to making more on December 4! Bring a friend! To sign up please email or text Shauna Smith at [email protected] or 845-641-5745

We also gratefully will receive ShopRite or Price Chopper gift cards, or monetary donations, to help offset our own cost of purchasing groceries for the program. Drop off at the church office or make a donation at our website, www.warwickpantry.com

First Sunday of Advent

Do What You Can! The reading from the prophet Isaiah this Sunday contains a remarkable prediction--the end of war between nations (Isaiah 2:4). While most of the good predictions of the prophets were fulfilled in Jesus, we still await the end of all wars. So why hasn't that one been fulfilled? We can look to the second reading and the Gospel for some hints.

Both readings talk about being awake and ready for our salvation (Romans 13:12) or the coming of the Son of Man (Matthew 24:39). Being awake doesn't mean consuming lots of coffee or turning the music volume all the way up. Paul calls it "putting on the Lord Jesus Christ" as a soldier would put on armor before a battle. He even mentions ri-valry and jealousy as attitudes to avoid. Both of those vic-es have been the cause of many wars in our history. What if we not only avoided them, but also taught our children to avoid them? What if everyone eventually learned not to be jealous and hateful?

We are a long way from ending all wars. There are still people who teach hate to the poor instead of helping to feed them. There are still people who get rich selling the weapons of war. This brings us back to the first reading, in which Isaiah speaks of beating swords into plowshares. Do we have enough faith in God's love to stop building weapons and use those resources to feed the hungry or cure diseases in underprivileged countries? Until we con-vert everyone to following Jesus, that's not likely. The Gos-pel calls us to be ready. Maybe we need to be ready to share our faith. Maybe we have to be awake to any oppor-tunity to show God's love to those around us. Are we afraid to offer to pray for someone in need? Maybe we need to put on the "armor of light," as St. Paul calls it. Instead of trying to stop all wars, could we at least show forgiveness to someone who has hurt us?

Jesus never said to do the impossible. If we can be ready to see Jesus in those around us, to show his love to those who need it, or just be patient with other people's faults and weaknesses, we may not stop all wars, but we will be prepared for the coming of the Prince of Peace. Hopeful Expectation

Our liturgical year begins with the season of Advent—a time of hopeful expectation of the coming of the Lord. On the First Sunday of Advent we look forward to the end of time when we will awaken to the dawn of Christ’s new day.

Today we hear Isaiah speak of a day when God’s power will have brought universal peace and God’s Word will have instructed all people, radiating God’s “light” (teachings) into all of human society. Only when hu-manity walks “in the light of the LORD” (Isaiah 2:5), when all people desire to be instructed “in [God’s] ways” (Isaiah 2:3), will the world be set aright and our deepest longings fulfilled. The reading from Romans calls us to “awake from sleep” for this final “day is at hand” (Romans 13:11, 12). Together this Sunday’s scriptures proclaim our Christian faith that Jesus is the One who will finally come to fulfill God’s plan of salvation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
