Dear Friends

Messy Church is a growing phenomenon. From its first beginnings in a church near Portsmouth in 2004, there are now Messy Churches all over the UK and in over 30 other countries around the world! I’m really excited to be writing about our decision to have a go ourselves, and start up our own Messy Church based at St Herbert’s, Braithwaite. The label ‘Messy Church’ is not just a description of some of the kinds of things that go on that are quite messy; things like hand printing with paint and decorating biscuits with gooey icing. Not everyone enjoys getting messy so it is not obligatory - there will be plenty of other things that aren’t messy at all! The name ‘Messy Church’ also recognises that we live ‘messy’ lives. Things don’t always go how we’d like; often we feel disorganized and out of control. So if that’s you – do come along. Messy Church is for all ages, not just for children, (in fact children must be accompanied). So come on your own, come as a family, come with your friends and neighbours. At Messy Church we’ll have a theme for the day and start with activities that relate to that theme. Then we’ll have a ‘Celebration Time’ with songs, bible story and prayer activities. Messy Church will finish with everyone sharing a meal together. We’re going to hold Messy Church on the second Sunday in the month from 4.00 – 5.30pm and our first one will be on Sunday 12th November. If you have any questions do drop me an email or phone and I’ll try to answer them. I do hope to see you at Messy Church! With every blessing Judith

Awayday

During August the church council had an Awayday at Rydal Hall to think about the year ahead and the strategy and plans for the parish and our three churches. Our stated purpose provided a good starting point for our thinking. It’s on the front cover of the parish magazine:

‘Our purpose is to serve Jesus and to share God’s love with all’

It’s a lot to live up to, but that's really the point. It’s what we’re striving and praying for. On the day we explored our values and shared our dreams for the future. We also considered what should be the next steps to take us forward in line with our purpose. One priority we agreed upon is prayer. Prayer is at the centre of what we do. We believe it's a vital part of our church life. We’ll be doing more to ensure we are constantly praying for our village communities and for our world. At St Herbert’s on Thursday mornings at 8.30 we’ll be saying Morning Prayer. It’s just a short ser-vice of readings and prayers, a chance to refocus and take time out to connect with God.

We also agreed to have a go at Messy Church – read more about it elsewhere in the magazine. We’ll be meeting at 4.00 pm on the second Sunday of each month for crafts, celebration and to eat together. It’s a new way of being church – have a go. These are just two of many things we talked about and will continue to pray for in the coming months and years. It was a really good day and we felt a sense of God leading us on.

Generous Giving Financial Update The figures shown in the charts are a forecast produced by our treasurer giving a best estimate of where we will be financially by the end of this year. Voluntary income is mainly regular giving where we have the benefit of Gift Aid and also our income from Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals (BWF). The main area of expenditure is the Parish Offering, which is money we give to the Diocese and which covers the cost of ministry in the parish. The PCC has agreed to give 10% of our voluntary income to a range of charities. (tithe) We are indebted to the Jessie Agnes Pearson Trust for the support it gives covering many of the other costs of running the parish and enabling us to un-dertake the major refurbishment work at St Mary’s. It would be too complicated, in this brief update to include all aspects of income and expenditure, these are available in church as part of the PCC minutes if you are interested to know more. You’ll see that Voluntary Giving is well below the level of Ministry Costs for this year. Next year, In 2018, we have decided to reduce the Parish offering to reflect the cost of ministry in the parish more accurately (now we have a part time vicar), however we will still have a deficit. We are tremendously grateful to all who already give to the church. Not every-one is in a position to increase their giving but it’s good to review it from time to time. If you are not already giving and would like to, please get in touch with our treasurer Colin Grant.

RENOVATION WORK AT ST. MARY'S PUBLIC MEETING HELD ON 8

TH SEPT AT 7.00 PM

The purpose of the meeting was to share the plans for the first phase of the work with all interested parties and to invite questions of clarification to the PCC, the Architect, the Main Contractor and the Archdeacon. It was noted that the faculty for the work had been approved in June. About 30 parishioners attended. The Architect, Ian Wells and the Main Contractor Richard Hymers were in-troduced to the meeting and the Archdeacon was welcomed. Ian Wells gave a brief overview of the problems that had been identified, including some historical perspective concerning the previous use of inap-propriate materials and techniques for maintaining such a building. He went on to outline the work that has been planned for this first phase of dealing with the dampness in the building as follows: remove the organ for protection and overhaul (removal was complete

before the meeting). complete the work of re-roofing the building including replacement of

all the finials on the ridge of the roof. remove the plaster from all of the inside walls of the church apart

from those in the Chancel. rake out the cement mortar pointing from the West face and the North

face of the Nave and replace with lime mortar. install cross flow ventilation at the peak of the transepts controlled by

a humidistat in an attempt to reduce the humidity level inside the building.

install new fan convectors (these may be temporary) so that the church can be put back in use while the walls dry out and until the later phases of the work can be completed.

Some questions were raised: Is it the intention to remove the cement mortar pointing from the

whole building? Yes, but this phase only covers the areas listed above so that we can see the impact it has on the walls before pro-ceeding further.

Can additional remedial work to the pews be carried out whilst they are out of position? Yes, but recommend that this is done once the main dirty part of the first phase is complete and just before re-installation of the pews. This could include placing a damp proof

layer under the pew ends during re-installation to prevent further damp damage to the wood.

11

Will the walls be re-plastered? Although the current thinking is that the walls will be re-plastered (in lime plaster), that is not part of this phase and the final decision may depend on what we find when the current plaster is removed and the walls have dried out.

Is the proposed heating system the final system? No, what is planned is short term to get the building back in use, the final sys-tem will depend on the later phases of the work and may be contin-gent on whatever is agreed about the floor. Current thinking by the consultants is that the floor should be lifted and replaced on top of a damp proof membrane. One option is that under floor heating (driven by a heat pump to reduce cost and make the church more environmentally friendly) could be incorporated. If this were to take place it would of necessity be before the re-plastering of the walls. All options (gas fired water based system, direct electrical heating by convector etc.) will remain under consideration while the next phase(s) are planned. None of this has yet been planned or dis-cussed in detail with the project team the PCC or the DAC and will be the subject of discussion as we understand how the building re-acts to this first phase.

A question was posed to parishioners concerning safe access to the churchyard during the progress of the work when the church will be "scaffolded". It was agreed that the best solution would be that the front gate should be locked to prevent access to the building and that people should be directed to the side gates down the lane for access to the graveyard. The Main Contractor will indicate clearly the areas where people should not seek access and also volunteered to provide a water butt for those who wish to water flowers in a container on a grave. The Archdeacon commended both the Consultants and the PCC on the work done to date and the plans developed. He went on to urge caution and patience because the DAC wished to see the problems properly ad-dressed and resolved. He expressed his opinion, developed by involve-ment in many similar issues with old church buildings, that the whole pro-gramme is likely to take several years. Overall the meeting was seen as informative and helpful in understanding what is to happen.

The Friends of Newlands Church service on 27

th August, was well

attended with our regular congre-gation being supplemented by a number of Friends, and also some visitors. The after service refreshments were enjoyed by all, - not least the group of walkers who were just passing, and greatly appreciated the opportunity of some tea and a talk with the locals! On 3

rd August the ashes of Bill Thwaite and his wife Jennifer were

interred in Bill’s parents grave at Newlands, and next to his brother John who was killed in WW2. Bill’s father, Fisher farmed at Low House before emigrating to Australia, and on his return lived at The Mount, Braithwaite, where Bill was born. Although he had not lived locally for many years he always maintained a close interest in ‘home’, and was a source of information for Sue Grant when she was writing her ‘Story of Newlands Valley’ There will be two services at Newlands in October - on 8

th which we

will host due to the temporary closure of St. Mary’s, and as normal on 22

nd which will include a baptism.

We will again be holding our pre-Christmas get together with the children of the valley. This will be in the Schoolroom on Saturday 25

Eileen Hindmarsh 1916-2017

Eileen was born into a farming family in Roscomon, Eire in September 1916, one of 6

children. She married Leslie, who she met in Keswick, in March 1940. Their only

daughter, Fiona, was born in Torquay in 1941. There were several moves for the family

during the war years – to York and later Bury in Lancashire.

After the war they moved into a home of their own in Prestwich, Manchester and Leslie

joined the Boots Company. They built up many friendships during those years and en-

joyed entertaining. Eileen and Leslie were a gregarious couple and loved to socialise.

Their family grew and they became doting grandparents to Fiona and Chris’ sons,

Richard, Robert, Robin and Roger. They played a large part in their childhood and were

tremendously supportive and proud of all that the boys have achieved in their lives.

When they retired, Leslie and Eileen returned to the Lake District and moved to

Braithwaite where Fiona and Chris and the boys were living. Old friendships were rekin-

dled and they thoroughly enjoyed their retirement. The two were always inseparable and

well known in Keswick. Those years also saw the arrival of great grandchildren – an-

other source of delight.

When Leslie died in 2012 at the age of 94, it was a deep loss of course for Eileen in par-

ticular. She continued to live in their cottage in Braithwaite but eventually she needed to

have more care. She spent the last 4 years at Sunrise Senior Living in Hale Barns Chesh-

ire. Last year she celebrated her 100th birthday and enjoyed a lovely party with family

and friends.

We pray that she will now rest in peace with her beloved Leslie.

Carol Bazley 1957-2017

Carol grew up in, and never left Braithwaite. She was an only child and very close to

her parents. She nursed her father for about 6 years after he suffered a stroke. Her dad

used to call her ‘Cinders’.

She married Bob in St Mary’s church, Thornthwaite in 1978. They were blessed with

three children, Laura, Kerry and Jack. Carol’s family were her delight and she was

immensely proud of them all. She was always sharing news, if you knew Carol, you’d

know about Laura, Kerry and Jack too! .She was also proud to be grandmother to

Daniel and Lily, Jasper and Matilda.

Carol trained as a carer and worked for Cumbrian Care for 27 years. She loved this

work and was clearly very good at it. It was challenging work, not just because of the

patients but some of the locations she had to visit took her through muddy fields with

bulls and cows. She’d be there in her uniform and her wellies!

Carol was very fond of her colleagues at work and they had many good laughs together.

Many of those friends have said how much they enjoyed working with Carol and how

they’d be pleased when her name was on the roster with them.

Through everything, she was exceptionally brave and courageous.

Feel for the people we most avoid –

strange or bereaved or never employed;

feel for the women and feel for the men

who fear that their living is all in vain.

Feel for the parents who've lost their child,

feel for the women whom men have defiled,

feel for the baby for whom there's no breast,

and feel for the weary who find no rest.

Feel for the lives by life confused,

riddled with doubt, in loving abused;

feel for the lonely heart, conscious of sin,

which longs to be pure but fears to begin.
