FR.PHIL'S FAREWELL SERMON (JUNE 14th, 2015)

One Sunday a priest announced his departure and after the service was greeted at the church door by an elderly lady in floods of tears at the news. ‘Don’t cry,' he said, `it's not that bad’ and she replied ‘I’m sorry, it's just that every vicar has been worse than the one before’. In the beautiful film of E.M Forster’s novel ‘A Room With a View’, there’s a wonderful scene where George – who will later fall in love with Lucy – climbs a tree on an Italian hillside and begins shouting ‘Beauty, Truth, Trust, Joy’ and Mr Bede who is picnicking with George's father and a English parson asks ‘Is that your son, could that be the silent dour George?’ and his father replies ‘Yes, that’s George, he’s saying his creed’. Sometimes the church can feel like that picnic, a polite social occasion while elsewhere, somewhere almost out of earshot, someone is up a tree shouting, Beauty, Love, Joy, Peace! Today we’ve got a beginning as we welcome India* into the Church and an ending as I make my way to Oxford, but what I’ve learnt especially from the Labyrinth is that all we really have is the NOW, this present moment on the journey with Jesus. And that’s why it's more important than ever that we too continue to be explorers, continue even at our great age to climb trees and shout out what really matters. In the Ezekiel reading that Paula read this morning God takes a shoot from the top of the tallest cedar tree and plants it on a high and lofty mountain as a place of shelter and shade for all people and animals. It’s a theme that is picked up in the Gospel where we hear the Kingdom of God described as a tiny mustard seed that grows into the biggest shrub of all so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade. I love the notion that this church too might be like a living, green tree under which we can find shade and from which we can shout our creed of love. I remember saying to someone last year, the problem with All Saints is I can’t piece it all together, we seem to have created so many different and diverse ways of being church here that it can feel out of control! Like a shrub that has never been pruned. But the person replied that maybe having a church which celebrated diversity and variety wasn’t a bad thing in itself. But ultimately, this community has to be a place where that difference is valued and celebrated.

Page 7: PARISH MAGAZINE SUMMER 2015 - All Saints Church ...allsaintshove.org/wp-content/uploads/magazine/magazine...Bede Griffiths, the Benedictine Monk and Mystic who was so inspired by Hinduism

Just as we need to let go for ourselves of the possibility that we can control everything around us, so the church community needs to less concerned with policing and more concerned with letting go. This is what is meant by the phrase ‘a generous orthodoxy’, a place where faith in Jesus and the divine love he reveals is first and foremost a place of generosity and openness. Forgive me for the times when you have not felt that generosity and openness from me. Let's take hope from the fact that young people like India still have the courage to climb trees, to join this broken, fragile community of faith and call it love. It has been my very great privilege to share with you on the journey for these last six and a half years, I have had a wonderful time, and I want to thank you all for your incredible kindness and generosity to me. Bede Griffiths, the Benedictine Monk and Mystic who was so inspired by Hinduism that he went to India – first to the beautiful Bangalore - once wrote: God [has] brought me to my knees and made me acknowledge my own nothingness, and out of that knowledge I [have] been reborn. May the God of beauty, of trust, of love, of joy and peace be born in you this day India*, and may all of us in the journey into our own nothingness, the journey of letting go, discover a love we never thought possible. Amen. * India Rose Latham was baptised by Fr.Phil at the service

FR. PHIL AND FAMILY TRIBUTES

God is love. Phil is the best of priests and demonstrates his love for all, whoever they are, and gets alongside everyone in both their highs and their lows. We have experienced that in our own lives. Paula has supported him fiercely through thick and thin. Stephen, Patti, Tim, Amy, Nicky (Coke) So Father Phil is off and we need words to explain the man and the impact he has made at All Saints. Phrases such as "they broke the mold, when they made him", just aren't moldy enough, what mold I ask? How about "he's a chip off the block", what block could that possibly be? "We won't see his like again", possibly gets nearer the mark. For me he brought humanity into the church and showed us the loving face of God's grace. Mike Anderson Phil and family brought a tremendous vibrancy to All Saints. Phil is always approachable, open to new ideas and is a great encourager of people. As a result many new ministries have flourished, making All Saints a welcoming and more open place, an expression of the kingdom in Hove. Jane Bartlett The eminent jazz guitarist John Etheridge, when playing one of our Jazz Festivals, referred to Phil as `The Dean' in the understandable belief that such a large church must warrant having a dean. Phil would probably be the first to admit he would not be very good as a dean - but that's because all his best qualities are people-centred rather than building-centred: warmth, concern, sympathy, thoughtfulness, modesty, humour (especially humour!). Peter Morris Fr.Phil came to a congregation and made it into a family. In Swaheli, which we share: Mbaraka fara - Blessings plenteous; Assante - Thank you; Kwaheri - Adieu. Peggy B

Fr.Phil's main impact at All Saints has been to energise us into being a more outward-looking church community. His Liberal Catholic theology, championship of inclusiveness and loving nature have endeared him to a wide age range. I shall personally miss gently nagging him about organisational matters - not his forte, God bless him! Adrian Herbert The Ritchie family have brought fun and laugher to All Saints. They have brightened many people’s church experience, including mine. I will miss them. Iona Watters It is hard to imagine All Saints without Phil, Paula and the girls. They are such a warm, welcoming, accepting and loving family. So many things have blossomed under Phil's leadership.....Messy Church, Hove Hut, HOME service, work with homeless people, centre for spirituality, souper socials...just to name a few. I think all these things have been able to happen because Phil is so open and Paula and the girls so supportive. I will miss them so much! Lucy McGrath In thinking about Fr Phil’s delicious sense of humour that I’ve known as Church Warden and latterly as Treasurer, it struck me that the titles of his emails are very fertile territory! For example…. ‘Panic, Panic’ was followed the next day by ‘More Wine’. ‘Parking’ was followed by ‘Street Drinkers’ and ‘Leak’ was followed by the obviously unintended ‘Time for a Squat’! This in turn was followed by the title ‘Manly and Womanly clean up’.............. Oxford, beware! Martyn Redman I love Phil’s sermons. They stimulate me, challenge me, and make me laugh (when he makes a joke - I should add!). I leave the church wanting to be a better person. Frances Valdes

Pilgrimage or Conference?

FATHER JOHN AND ANN JOYCE IN JERUSALEM

It had taken a lot of preparation: some 40 members [and partners] of the Society of Catholic Priests from England, Wales, Ireland, the US and Australia were joining together for our 2nd international conference in Jerusalem and I’d had the job of putting together all the worship, nearly 200 pages but the wonders of iPads and Kindles !... With our rector-general, Andrew Nunn, Dean of Southwark, Ann & I went out the day before to be there to welcome everyone as they arrived at the Notre Dame Centre, opposite the New Gate of the old city.

Modern Jerusalem

Our first day began in Bethlehem with Mass at the Shepherds’ Fields on the edge of the city, with its views over the ever-expanding settlements coming right up to the edge of the “separation wall”. We passed Banksy’s moving Dove of peace, with its flak jacket, as we went on to the Church of the Nativity. The manger is in a cave and in it not only do Christians come to pray at the birth place of the Saviour, but Muslim women are always there praying too – Mary is a very important figure for Islam.

12

Page 15: PARISH MAGAZINE SUMMER 2015 - All Saints Church ...allsaintshove.org/wp-content/uploads/magazine/magazine...Bede Griffiths, the Benedictine Monk and Mystic who was so inspired by Hinduism

Next day was the busiest of the week: we started at the Ascension mosque and the Pater Noster church at the top of the Mount of Olives and then walked down, past the Dominus Flevit where Jesus wept over the Holy City, to the Garden of Gethsemane with olive trees over 2000 years old. From there we went St Peter in Gallicantu on the site of Caiaphas’ house and then for lunch at Ecce Homo with the pavement with the soldiers’ game of “King” they played with Jesus. After this we prayed the 14 Stations of the Cross along the Via Dolorosa finishing on the roof of the Sepulchre with the Copts: our Mass was in the Lutheran Church. We kept our visit to Calvary and the Sepulchre for 6.00am the next morning, before the tourists arrive and then celebrated at St George’s Cathedral before a final free hours to revisit places in Jerusalem. Each day in Jerusalem we were led in reflections, as part of our conference learning, by Fr Russ McDougall, an American biblical scholar who is Rector of the Tantur Ecumenical Institute which is close to the border of Israel and Palestine on the road to Bethlehem. He helped us consider the ‘competing’ narratives of Jesus’ birth, ministry, and passion and resurrection but finally reminding us that, as Jesus entrusts his mother to the beloved disciple’s care, we’re invited to entrust our lives to him. On Friday we went down to Jericho [2000 feet above to 2000 feet below sea level] and renewed our promises at the recently opened site on the Jordan close to where we believe Jesus met John for baptism. It’s quite a surprise to see how small a river the Jordan is: the rifles of the Jordanian soldiers the other side were quite close. Then we travelled north up the Jordan valley to the Sea of Galilee and the lovely Ron Beach Hotel at Tiberias – the swim in the cool lake and the warmer swimming pool were most welcome. From Tiberias we had a day on the shores of the Lake at Capernaum, at the Feeding of the 5000 where we had our Mass, at the Mount of the Beatitudes and at the place where in John’s gospel Jesus meets the disciples who have gone fishing and prepares their BBQ breakfast – with signs on the fence forbidding swimming and BBQs!! We returned by boat across the Lake.

A momentary sit down in Nazareth

On Sunday, we joined the Arabic-speaking Anglicans at Christ Church in Nazareth, along with a pilgrimage led by Bishop John, recently retired bishop of Oxford and another group from Canada. Mass was basically in Arabic but bits were in both languages: the Our Father and the 4 hymns were said/sung simultaneously in Arabic and English – it sounded like Pentecost! After lunch we visited the holy places of Nazareth and then made our way down the hill to Cana to the traditional site of the marriage feast. Michael and Arthur, celebrating 25 years together, led us in our prayer there. Monday morning saw us all on the terrace of the hotel as the sun came up over the Golan Heights celebrating Mass and singing Dear Lord and father of mankind before we set off to Tel Aviv ready to be whisked back to the paradise of Luton airport and the Thameslink train home.

A PILGRIMAGE TO SANTIAGO DE

COMPOSTELA

Adrian Herbert

In April, Fr.David Ingledew, Revd. Colin Mattock, a former curate at All Saints, and myself joined a party of pilgrims from various parts of England en route to Santiago de Compostela via Burgos and Leon in North West Spain. Burgos turned out to be a most attractive city whose most famous son was Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, better known as El Cid. His tomb lies in the enormous Gothic cathedral in which we celebrated Mass in one of the chapels. Leon also proved to be a pleasant city with a number of buildings having been designed by Antoni Gaudi of Barcelona fame. The cathedral was constructed in the 13th century and, apart from all the wonderful carving on the west facade, it features the most stunning array of stained glass windows I have ever seen. We also paid two visits to the ancient church of San Isidoro where Mass was again celebrated by our leader, Revd. Bruce Driver, assisted, on one occasion, by Fr.David.

Further along the route to Santiago de Compostela we stopped for a delightful lunch in the pretty village of Villafranca and paid a brief visit to the fortified town of Lugo - both stops along the Camino, the traditional pilgrim way to venerate the remains of Saint James in the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela. Passing several modern day pilgrims walking the route did make us feel somewhat guilty as we were taking the easy option of travelling by coach! After a walking tour of Santiago de Compostela and a conducted tour of the cathedral and all its treasures, a further private Mass was held in one of the chapels at which Revd. Colin assisted. Some of us then stayed on to the Pilgrims Mass held in the main body of the cathedral where we witnessed the ceremonial swinging of a large silver incense censer (by eight costumed gentlemen!), bell-ringing style, to commemorate when it had been used in earlier times to alleviate the unpleasant smell from the unwashed pilgrims who had travelled all the way from France! All in all, the pilgrimage was an interesting and enjoyable experience with much good camaraderie being forthcoming amongst our party, and, having caught the `pilgrimage bug', I look forward to possible further ones, hopefully, to Rome and Assisi.

Cathedrals offer place of peace and prayer in busy lives

The number of people attending midweek services at cathedrals has doubled in the past 10 years, according to recent figures from the Church of England’s Research and Statistics department. One of the factors attributed is the need for a place of peace in increasingly busy lives. Midweek attendance at cathedrals was 7,500 in 2003, rising to 15,000 in 2013 (compared to 12,400 in 2012). As the Dean of Lichfield, Adrian Dorber, explains, “At the weekend you’ve got commitments with children doing sport, shopping, household maintenance – life’s run at the double these days … Taking out half an hour or an hour every week is much more negotiable.” Anecdote to Evidence research published last year showed that the highest motivating factors for Cathedral attendance were peace and contemplation, worship and music and friendly atmosphere. The Dean of York Minster, Vivienne Faull, commented: “If I take a Eucharist at 12.30 in the middle of the week in the nave of York Minster, there’ll be a lot of people who just slide in from the side. It’s not so much about anonymity, there’s the feeling there’s a journey you can travel which doesn’t require huge steps – it just requires one little step.” Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester Cathedral, said: “Patterns of church attendance are different now. Cathedrals are uniquely placed to be providing greater opportunities for worship and that includes during the week.”
