DearFriends'HolidayatHome'wastheheadlineonthefrontpageofthelatestBBCGoodFoodmagazine, which probably summarises well some of the challenges anddifferencesof this summer. Whether it is aUKbasedholiday, or a staycation,basedathome,ormaybenoholidayatallisthenormforyou?

Buthowareyougoingatgivingyourselfsomeslackandsometime?Thepastfewmonthshavebeenhardworkforallofus,regardlessofwhatwehavedoneor howwe responded, because life has beendifferent, fear has beenprevalentand our gardens are often looking amazing! Some of us have hadmoreworkthanusual;otherswonderwhatwork isgoing tobeavailableorwhat thenextstepswillbeforusasahousehold,anindividualorcommunities.

ThepeopleofIsraelspent40yearsinthewilderness,journeyingfromEgyptto the 'PromisedLand',having to trustGoddaily for their food, theirguidance,theirsecurityandtheenormityoftheirlives. Yesthoselivesweresimplerthanoursaretoday,buttheystillhadtotrustthatthere'dbefoodandwaterfortheWlocks and people, somewhere to pitch the tents and safety for all in thecommunity.

Ourtimeinlockdownhasbeenmuchshorterthan40years,butwe'relookingforsimilarthings:food,wateraroofoverourheadsandsafetyforourselvesandour communities. Yes how we do that is different, but then I expect ourexpectationsabouthowwedothataredifferenttodayfromthosewehadsomesixmonthsago! WhenIsraelwastravellingforthose40years,sometimestheypackedupandmovedonafterashortperiod,sometimestheystayedforalongerperiod. Likeusthereweretimesthatthecommunityneededtostop,topause,maybetoregroup,maybetorecover,maybejusttohaveabreather.Thejourneycontinued,it justwentatadifferentpace. Ourjourneysalsocontinuetheyjusthaveadifferentpace.

WhetherornotAugustisatimewhenwegoonholiday,itisatimeforlifeatadifferentpace. Yes thisAugustwill bedifferent toothers,but it is still a goodopportunitytotakestock,tolookaroundusabitmorethanwedoatothertimes,maybelookingbackoverthepastfewmonthsandaskingyourselfwhathaveyougained?WhathasgoneoninyourlifethatyouwouldliketoKeep?Secondlyaskyourselfwhatareyoulookingforwardtolosing,nothavingtorepeat(thingsthathave been a feature of this time)? Extractsfromtheabovenews:–‘As schools break up for the summer holidays, Bishop Peter is supporting afoodbank appeal for games, jigsaw puzzles, colouring books and pens, to helpcarersentertainchildrenandyoungpeopleoverthesummerholidays.The foodbank in Weston super Mare, one of many foodbanks acrossSomerset, has seen a 98 per cent rise in the number of families withchildrenneedingsupportduring the lockdown. In the threemonths fromApril to June, Weston foodbank fed 766 children – compared to 387 in2019.Butas familiescontinue tostruggle toprovide food for theirchildren, theywillalsostruggletokeepthemactiveandoccupiedthissummer.

Thedioceseisaskingforpeopletosupporttheappealbydonatingnewgamesand activities for children, to help them have a healthy and happy summerholidays before the return to school in September.Withmany children’s clubsforcedtoclosebecauseofCovid, lotsofchildrenfacea longsummer indoorsathome,ontopofweeksalreadyspentindoorsinlockdown…….’

Withtheopeningupofseveralpartsofsociety,includinggreateraccesstoplacesof worship, organisers of the Listening Chaplaincy Phoneline have decided tosuspendtheoperation.

Run by 90 lay and clergy chaplains the phoneline was set up to provideemotionalsupporttothosesufferingfromCOVID-19relatedanxietyintheAvonandSomersetarea. Itwascreatedbythefaithcommunitiesworkingtogetherinthemajoremergenciesteam(originallyestablished30yearsagotoprovideface-to-facesupportintimesofemergency)andwasadaptedtobecomeachaplaincyphonelineinresponsetothepandemic.

Ittookjustonemonthtodeveloptheserviceandtrainteammembersanditoperated successfully for two months. Bishop Peter praised the work of thehelpline,thankingthosewhosetitupandthevolunteerswhoworkedtirelesslythroughout tosupport those inneed. “Igive thanks toall thosewhoworked toenablethistohappen,forthosewhohavebeenhelpedandforthethingswehavelearntalongtheway.”

NotallthecallsthephonelinereceivedwerelinkeddirectlytoCOVID19,butmany were in response to the impact of the crisis on people. The campaign will focus on 4 simple steps we can all take to preventburglaries from happening to them. As lockdown continues to be lifted, anincreasing number of people are leaving the comfort of their own homes toreturntoworkandleisureactivities.

StPeter’sChurch,LydfordonFosseWehaveallbeenlivinginourownworldsforthelastfourmonthsbutalthoughmovingbacktosomesortofnormalityisverywelcomeitisprovingtohaveitsissues.AsyouareawarethechurchbuildingatLydfordhasbeenandremainsclosedforthetimebeingbothforprivateprayerandservices.Thisismainlyduetothevast number of visitorswe are getting visiting the river and surrounding areaand therefore the riskofvandalismbutalso theaddedcomplexitiesneeded toopenthechurchatthemoment. WearekeepingthisunderconstantreviewasCovidguidelinesarereassessed.

75^nAnniversaryofVJDayWearehoweverplanningtoholdanopenairserviceattheWarMemorialinthecarparkonSaturday,15thAugustthe75^_anniversaryofVJDay.

Aswewerenotabletomarkthe75^_AnniversaryofVEDaythiswillgiveusthe chance to remember all thosewho gave there lives, aswell as thosewhofoughtforourcountryinthelastwar.Wecanalsocelebratethepeacethatcamebutwithagreatlossoflife.Abellorbellswillberungat11amfollowedbya2minutesilencebeforeashortserviceofremembranceandcelebration. WedoaskallthoseattendingtoSociallyDistancethemselvesinthecarparkandchurchyardasrequired.

Thecarparkwillbeclosedfortheservicesopleaseparkconsideratelyonthesideoftheroadorwalkifableto.

LydfordRivergroupForinformation,therehasbeensetupinthevillageaLydfordRiverGrouptolookatwaysoftryingtocontroltheparking,numbersandbehaviourofthosevisitingthe area. We do hope they have some success. NamonalburglarycampaigntobelaunchedbyNHWAburglarypreventioncampaign is tobe launchednationallyat theendof JulyintoearlyAugust.

The campaign will focus on 4 simple steps we can all take to preventburglaries from happening to them. As lockdown continues to be lifted, anincreasing number of people are leaving the comfort of their own homes toreturntoworkandleisureactivities.

We all know that most burglaries are opportunistic. The campaign willremind everyone as they leave their houses to take simple steps to keep theirhomesafeashighlightedbytheacronymWIDE:

There aretwo areas where vegetation has beenallowed to grow during the Wloweringseason, otherwise the churchyard ismownwithanumberoflargetrees.Theunmownareatothenorthofthechurchisshowingagoodrangeofplantsincluding:–Galiumverum(Lady'sBedstraw), Lotuscorniculatus

(CommonBird's-footTrefoil),

A similar range of species are evident in the mown area north of the church.Overall, this is fairly typical of a Wlower-rich meadow on calcareous soils (aswould be expected in Keinton, source of much Blue Lias limestone buildingstone).

July has seen some positive moves for Barton St DavidScoutGroup.Veryexcitinglywehave justheard thatwecanstarttoplanforfacetofaceactivitiesagainingroupsofupto15peopleoutdoors.

Ofcoursethereareafewrestrictionsanddetailedplanshavetobeapprovedbya hierarchy of ScoutAssociation people. But ourwonderfulmembers arewellworththateffortandhopefullyyou’llhavesomenewsofwhatwearedoingnextmonth.I’mnotsurewhenwewillgetbacktofacetofaceindoorsbutwearesofortunate to have an outdoor meeting place with the best ‘landlord’ in thecountry. It is through his generosity that we are able to look forward withconWidenceandgetgoingagain.

Having smaller groups and some leaderswho are unable to return face tofacejustyetdoesmeanthatwemaystruggletogettherequiredleadersforeachsession. Withagroupof15weanticipaterequiring2-3adultsmeaningthatwecanhave12children.

Ifyouareabletojoininthefunasavolunteerthenpleaseletmeknow.Ipromisethatnoonewillbeaskedtodomorethantheywishtodoandifneededyoursupportcanbesimplyforthedurationofthecurrentsituation. Pleasegetintouchwithmeifyou’dliketodoyourbittomake60wonderfullocalchildrenveryhappyindeed.

That’swhywehave just put in a bumperorder for 104 badges which are just about to be delivered to ourmembers.

From July, BishopRuthwill be apatron for the international development charity,SendaCow.Thecharity,basednearBath,helpsfamiliesinruralAfricatogrowtheirown futures.Tomark thisnewappointment,BishopRuth is callingonchurches tojoinSendaCowintheirHarvestcelebrations,on-lineoroutside,duringSeptemberorOctober.

BishopRuthsays,“I’mdelightedtobeinvitedtosupportSendaCowinbecomingPatron. The development work SAC does in support of African rural life,environmental concerns and in empoweringwomenwithin their communities, areallareasIampassionateabout.
