THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see."
Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you."
Immediately he received his sight
and followed him on the way.
Today we hear the story of Jesus healing the man born blind, Timaeus. In Jesus' time many people
suffered with physical and medical problems—there were no medical treatments available. Jesus
offered help, he could heal, he could restore sight. When Jesus healed it was to announce the
Kingdom of God—to reveal the power of God to transform life.
The healing of “blindness” in today's Gospel can be understood in a metaphorical sense. After being
healed the man understood—he became a follower of Jesus. A physical healing is wonderful but it is
only a physical restoration—Jesus offers spiritual insight that leads to true joy.
The moments when we are able to see the truth, the moments when we have clarity, are moments of
“healing” similar to what we see in the Gospel. When we see a homeless person and are moved with
compassion it is an opportunity to experience the Kingdom of God. The moments when we are
overwhelmed by other people's problems it is a call to deeper discipleship. True discipleship becomes
possible when we hear the call of Jesus and allow him to open our minds and hearts. We can
become truly faithful signs of the presence of Christ in this world.
