Your Faith Has Saved You
Being a leper at any time is a difficult situation. In ancient Israel, lepers not only had the physical
torment of the disease, but they were ostracized from any human society. In today’s gospel, we hear
Jesus direct the lepers to go show themselves to the priests. It was one of the functions of the priests
to determine if the leprosy had really gone into remission and was really absent from the person
because of the danger of its contagion.
There is in this gospel passage, a certain similarity with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When we
are in a state of sin, we have separated ourselves from God’s society. We are not in union with His
will; we have relinquished a share in divine life. Through the sacramental economy, we are directed
to go and show our condition to a priest. He can confirm whether our contrition and our request for
forgiveness has removed the disease of sin. He can confirm that we are readmitted to God’s
communion.
When we hear this miracle account, we usually concentrate on the one leper, who has so much faith
in the mercy of God that he turns to Jesus to thank Him in advance for his healing. We can then
imagine that he goes to the priest for the official release from his diseased condition. While we are
always certain of God’s boundless willingness to forgive, it is important to remember that we need
to go to the priest for the assurance that we are absolved of sin and part of God’s people again. We
should thank Him before, during and after every gracious healing He gives us.
Tu Fe Te Ha Salvado
Ser leproso en cualquier momento es una situación difícil. En el antiguo Israel, los leprosos no solo
tenían el tormento físico de la enfermedad, sino que también eran excluidos de cualquier sociedad
humana. En el evangelio de hoy, escuchamos a Jesús dirigir a los leprosos para que se presenten a
los sacerdotes. Una de las funciones de los sacerdotes era determinar si la lepra realmente había
entrado en remisión y estaba realmente ausente de la persona debido al peligro de contagio.
Hay en este pasaje del evangelio, una cierta similitud con el Sacramento de la Reconciliación.
Cuando estamos en un estado de pecado, nos hemos separado de la sociedad de Dios. No estamos
en unión con su voluntad; Hemos renunciado a una parte de la vida divina. A través de la economía
sacramental, se nos indica que presentemos nuestra condición a un sacerdote. Él puede confirmar si
nuestra contrición y nuestra solicitud de perdón ha eliminado la enfermedad del pecado. Él puede
confirmar que somos readmitidos a la comunión de Dios.
Cuando escuchamos este relato milagroso, generalmente nos concentramos en el único leproso, que
tiene tanta fe en la misericordia de Dios que recurre a Jesús para agradecerle de antemano su
curación. Entonces podemos imaginar que él va al sacerdote para la liberación oficial de su
enfermedad. Si bien siempre estamos seguros de la ilimitada voluntad de Dios de perdonar, es
importante recordar que debemos ir al sacerdote para asegurarnos de que estamos absuelto del
pecado y somos parte del pueblo de Dios nuevamente. Debemos agradecerle antes, durante y
después de cada sanación milagrosa que nos da.
