THERE ARE WANTS AND NEEDS

A friend sent me an email with different sayings. This one caught my attention.

“The art of being happy is to be satisfied with what you have.”

That brought memories of Jamaica, Kenya, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Venezuela, Mexico where people are always happy. They have the biggest and warmest smiles and are the most welcoming people; generous to a fault, sharing from the very little they have.

I used to wonder “How can they be so happy, when they have so little?” But that is exactly it. They are not attached to material things like we are. They are attached to their families, friends, and neighbours. They live in community and they share what they have.

I remember sitting in a hut, in the largest slum in Kenya (17,000 families). This hut was 12 feet long by 8 feet wide. A family of 6 lived in this hut. It was extremely hot and the lady that lived in the hut wanted us to drink the very last can of pop she had. That was all she had to offer us. They have a lot more problems, like AIDS. I still get a knot in my throat every time I think of that family and wonder what has become of them.

The above saying is very true, and we, in the industrialized world, need to learn to share with our whole heart. The good Lord created the world and populated it. He also gave us enough of everything for everybody.

In SSVP, we say “there are wants and there are needs”. We should only take what we need.

DANIEL FASTING

Daniel Fasting - 21 days of spiritual journey with prayers and sacrifices - is the deliberate and intentional dedication to focus on God and humbling oneself in the presence of Almighty God. We do this with the same fervor and urgency shown by the prophet Daniel for his people and nation. Expecting a great manifestation of God’s power upon the current pandemic, we lift our hands and hearts to the Lord for supernatural breakthroughs in our lives and in the world.

“I ate no savory food, took no meat or wine, and did not anoint myself at all until the end of the three weeks.” (Daniel 10:3) Fr. Roy Varghese Palatty, CMI (Spiritual Director, Shalom Media) will be leading this initiative.

Registration for this event is free. For more details: http://www.shalommedia.org/danielfasting

“Though God is sovereign in strength, He judges with mildness. Let us look to our Father’s example when we consider how we ought to regard those who work against the pro-life movement. A TRIP TO THE BOTTLE DEPOT (PART 2)

Another thing I learned from the “bottle depot” website, is that they are also trusting people. You can sort your containers by size, that is all containers that are one liter or less, and contain-ers of more than one liter. If you have more space, you can sort them by material. If you have a lot of containers of a specific type, such as aluminum cans, you can group them together. Similarly, if you have a lot of water or pop plastic containers, you can group these together.

Another tip they give is to empty and rinse all containers before storing them at home. After the rinsing process is done, leave the lids off so that they can dry at a faster pace. It will also decrease the odor and having to deal with flies and wasps.

They also mention things like removing items like plastic rings, carton boxes and other extra packaging that may have come with your beverage containers. Beer bottles, however, should be brought to the Depot in the case they were purchased in. Depots use these cases to return the bottles so they can be recycled or refilled.

After my trip to the bottle depot, and after talking to a couple of other SSVP members, I decided that we are going to handle our bottle drives differently. When the parishioners drop off their donations, we will try to sort them as best we can, to assist the people working in the bottle depot. As it will make it a lot easier for them.

What I ask of you, if possible, is to keep the beer bottles in their original cases. That would be extremely helpful.

POPE FRANCIS Wednesday, July 8, 2020

POPE SAYS WE MUST SEEK FACE OF LORD IN HUNGRY, SICK, IMPRISONED AND FOREIGNERS

Decrying the unimaginable “hell” migrants experience in detention centres, Pope Francis urged all Christians to examine how they do or don’t help – as Jesus commanded –

the people God has placed in their path. Christians must always seek the face of the Lord, who can

be found in the hungry, the sick, the imprisoned and foreigners, the pope said on the anniversary of his first pastoral visit as pope to the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Jesus warned everyone, “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me,” and Christians today must look at their actions every day and see if they

have even tried to see Christ in others, the pope said in his homily during Mass July 8. “Such a personal encounter with Jesus Christ is possible

also for us, disciples of the third millennium,” he said. The Mass, held in the chapel of the pope’s residence, marked the seventh anniversary of his first apostolic journey

to an island that has been a major destination point for migrants seeking a new life in Europe. However, since 2014, at least 19,000 people have died,

drowning in the Mediterranean Sea during those boat crossings. Pope Francis mourned their deaths during his 2013 visit with prayers and tossing a floral wreath into the rippling

water. In his homily at the Vatican chapel July 8, he remembered those who are trapped in Libya, subjected to terrible abuse

and violence and held in detention centers that are more like a “lager,” the German word for a concentration camp. He said his thoughts were with all migrants, those embarking on a

“voyage of hope,” those who are rescued and those who are pushed back. “Whatever you did, you did for me,” he said, repeating

Jesus’ warning. The pope then took a moment to tell the small congregation - all wearing masks and sitting at a distance

from one another - what had struck him about listening to the migrants that day in Lampedusa and their harrowing journeys.

He said he thought it strange how one man spoke at great length in his native language, but the interpreter translated it to the pope in just a few words.

An Ethiopian woman, who had witnessed the encounter, later told the pope that the interpreter hadn’t even translated “a quarter” of what was said about the torture and suffering

they had experienced. “They gave me the ‘distilled’ version,” the pope said. “This happens today with Libya, they give us a ‘distilled’

version. War. Yes, it is terrible, we know that, but you cannot imagine the hell that they live there,” in those detention camps, he said.

And all these people did was try to cross the sea with nothing but hope, he said. “Whatever you did … for better or for worse! This is a

burning issue today,” the pope said. The ultimate goal for a Christian is an encounter with God, he said, and always seeking the face of God is how Christians

make sure they are on the right path toward the Lord. The day’s first reading from the Book of Hosea described how the people of Israel had lost their way, wandering instead

in a “desert of inequity,” seeking abundance and prosperity

with hearts filled with “falsehood and injustice,” he said. “It is a sin, from which even we, modern Christians, are not

immune,” he added. The prophet Hosea’s words call everyone to conversion, “to turn our eyes to the Lord and see His face,” Pope Francis

said. “As we undertake to seek the face of the Lord, we may recognize Him in the face of the poor, the sick, the

abandoned, and the foreigners whom God places on our way. And this encounter becomes for us a time of grace and salvation, as it bestows on us the same mission entrusted to

the apostles,” he said. Christ Himself said “it is He who knocks on our door, hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, imprisoned, seeking an encounter

with us and requesting our assistance,” the pope said. The pope ended his homily by asking Our Lady, the solace of migrants, “help us discover the face of her son in all our

brothers and sisters who are forced to flee from their homeland because of the many injustices that still afflict our

world today.”

Stewardship Corner

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of July 18/19, 2020

In today’s second reading, Saint Paul bids us to take comfort in knowing that when God invites us to pray to Him, He knows our true needs, even if we do not. The Holy Spirit intercedes and prays for us even if we

can’t come up with appropriate words; even when we don’t have a clue what to ask for. We are not left alone. Good stewards know that prayer is an important part of living a life in Christ. The important thing is to make space for God. Do we let God into our hearts? Do we make room for the Holy Spirit to pray within us?

CHAPLAINS OFFER SPIRITUAL CARE THROUGH TELEPHONE COUNSELLING

Before COVID-19, a typical day would see a hospital chaplain supporting multiple patients or residents, family members and staff. Continuing to provide support to so many different individuals during a pandemic meant the team needed to get creative, so they expanded their spiritual care services to include telephone support. At Covenant Health hospitals, chaplains often call families because a staff member feels the family would benefit from support. For non-urgent requests, call the chaplain’s office of your local site and leave a message. For urgent requests at the Grey Nuns Hospital, Misericordia Hospital, or Villa Caritas, call the switchboard to page the on-call chaplain, who will triage requests.

At long-term care facilities, they often call families that would normally visit their loved ones regularly. To do so, call the chaplain’s office and leave a message.

LIVING IN THE WORD

Central to the disciple's rhythm of life is the Word proclaimed on Sunday at Mass. By means of the homily, the priest or deacon helps us understand the message of Sacred Scripture and apply it to our daily living. By what means do we carry that message forward into the events of our week? One way to do so is to make time as a family to discuss what was heard at Mass and share together how each one will allow God's Word to direct their thoughts and behaviours throughout the week.

Archbishop Smith, Pastoral Letter, September 14, 2017

PERMANENT DEACONS TO BE ORDAINED JULY 21

We are pleased to announce that four Edmonton men are preparing for ordination this month to the permanent diaconate in the Archdiocese. Archbishop Richard Smith will preside at the Mass of Ordination on Tuesday, July 21, at 7:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Basilica.

The candidates are: Steven Defer, Pedro “Bong” Estoque, Francis Lau, and Wayne Provencal. Please keep these men in your prayers.

Due to COVID-19 health restrictions, attendance at the diaconal ordinations will be limited to family members of the candidates. We invite everyone else to participate via the livestream on: Facebook @archedmonton, Youtube@archedmonton, Twitter @archedmonton or via cable television on TELUS Optik TV Channel 876.

A permanent deacon's ministry evolves in response to specific needs and his God-given talents. The three dimensions of diaconal service are Ministry of Love and Justice, Ministry of the Word of God, and Ministry within the Liturgy. Permanent deacons prepare the faithful to celebrate the Sacraments and to carry out their vocations as baptized Christians. They are commissioned to preach, to teach, to counsel and to give spiritual guidance. They baptize, witness marriages, and preside at wake services and funerals. In all that they do, permanent deacons act as servants of the Church.

The July 21 ordinations will bring the total number of permanent deacons in the Archdiocese to 39.

LIVE WITHIN LIMITS, PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL, NEW PRIESTS TOLD AMID PANDEMIC

Hometown heroes Rev. JD Carmichael and Rev. Curtis Berube were ordained as priests in the Archdiocese of Edmonton on June 29 with a call to ‘live within limits’ – both the physical imposed by crowd restrictions and other precautions against the spread of COVID-19, and the spiritual.

“We’re physical beings. We’re emotional beings. We’re spiritual beings. And on all of that, too, we’re sinners. Even learning to live as a priest, you’re still a sinner. That’s a tough one to kind of grapple with,” newly-ordained Father Carmichael said. “It’s a reminder to just rely on the Lord even all that much more.”

Outdoorsmen, friends at the fishing hole and in seminary, Father Carmichael and Father Berube are the first priests ordained under global COVID-19 pandemic restrictions at St. Joseph’s Basilica.

Father Berube said: “It’s a message of hope for me to accept my own human limitations as I start into everything, which will be new to me once I get into the parish. I accept my own limitations, but also trust that God will work through me to do amazing things if I’m just open to Him and allow His Spirit to work through me.”

Nevertheless, their ordination Mass was unlike any other, with a limited number of family and friends, and livestreamed from St. Joseph’s Basilica for those who wanted to but couldn’t attend. Supporters carrying homemade signs cheered and congratulated the new priests after Mass.

Both priests will be starting their first placements in a few weeks as associate pastors, Father Berube at St. Thomas More Parish and Father Carmichael at St. Charles Parish in Edmonton.
