Conference April 9–11, 2015OECD Paris Headquarters 2 Rue André Pascal, 75016

Each conference panel runs for 1 hour and 30 minutes. The panels start 15 minutes apart to allow for better flow when attendees pass through security at the OECD. Panels run concurrently in the morning and afternoon. The panels list the names of authors and commentators; many papers are coauthored, so there are more names than papers. Regardless of the number of co-authors, each paper is allocated roughly 15 minutes for presentation; commentators 10 minutes, then general discussion.

George Soros on the Future of EuropeWith the recent political tremors emanating from Greece, there is renewed focus on the existential threats facing Europe’s monetary union. Until recently, the great achievement of the EU had been to reduce the probability of violent nationalist conflict among some of its members to a vanishing small probability while improving the economic lot of its members. But in spite of the salesmanship surrounding the adoption of the single currency zone, much of this reduction in the propensity toward violence and economic growth took place before the adoption of the euro. Given the high prevailing rates of unemployment and a policy focus which seems incapable of addressing Europe’s growing political fracturing, is it time to consider the notion of giving up the euro? Or is there a wiser alternative that can address the immediate crises and establish a new growth dynamic in the EU?

The Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) is an international community of new economic thinkers comprised of students, young professionals, and researchers, supported by the Institute for New Economic Thinking.

VisionThe Institute for New Economic Thinking’s Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) envisions economic thinking free of intellectual barriers that resonates with reality and serves our global society.

MissionYSI supports and inspires the next generation of new economic thinkers. As a community, YSI seeks to transform the discourse in economics by establishing an open space for economic thought and inquiry. Ultimately, the program aims to renew economic thinking by embodying the change it hopes to see.

New Economic ThinkingYSI believes that there are many ways of thinking about the economy. So what “new economic thinking” means specifically, in terms of ideas and topics, is left up to every individual. What brings the community together is a spirit of new economic thinking—a certain way of studying, questioning, and conducting economics, as reflected by the objectives and values of the community. This is what makes new economic thinkers.

Objectives • Engage a global community of new economic

thinkers• Open up new ways to approach economic

issues • Bridge silos and break existing silences • Understand the foundations of economics • Support the next generation of new economic

thinkers

76 New Economic Thinking

The Institute for New Economic Thinking is a New York City-based research and education nonprofit foundation designed to broaden and accelerate the development of a new field of economic thought that will lead to real-world solutions to the key challenges of the 21st century. Created in response to the global financial crisis of 2007 and 2008, the Institute is supporting this fundamental shift in economic ideas by funding academic research, building communities of new economic thinkers, and spreading the word about the need for change. The Institute was co-founded by George Soros, William Janeway, and Jim Balsillie.
