Excellence for All

Unbelievably, we are now approaching the end of another very busy and

hard year for everyone connected with the school (time goes so quickly).

Parents, students and staff should be proud of the positive progress we

have seen this academic year and both ourselves and external bodies

such as OFSTED and the Bradford Partnership agree that we are well on

the way to becoming the good school we should be and that everyone

deserves.

The examination season is now over and we look forward to celebrating

improved outcomes with our students and yourselves. We are hopeful that

we will see some of the best results in the school’s history, a credit to both

staff and students alike. Leavers in Year 11 and Year 13 marked the end

of their examinations and for some, the end of their education at Parkside

with Proms, as usual a fantastic spectacle and thanks go to the staff that

made it all possible. The PE department organised our now annual whole

school sports day, a great success and the Cullingworth Gala was also

hosted by us. We are also looking forward to a successful Summer

School, building on the excellent transition work which has taken place

this term.

I would like to thank staff members for their work over this year and espe-

cially to those who ran the large number of successful visits and trips, lo-

cally, nationally and overseas. These give our students a different type of

educational and learning experience and provide memories which last a

lifetime. One of the highlights was the first ever Parkside Rugby Union

Tour to the North West where the boys did themselves and Parkside

proud, they cannot wait for the next one to be organised!

The end of the school year sees the departure of some of our staff mem-

bers as they begin new phases in their lives and I wish them well and

thank them for their commitment to the school and our students. Looking

forward to the future, we will be welcoming a number of new staff in Sep-

tember who are keen and enthusiastic to build on the positive work under-

taken here at Parkside.

Finally, I would also like to thank you the parents and carers for your sup-

port of the school and your children and for the many positive comments

you have made as well as those from our partners in Bradford.

I look forward with confidence and would like to wish all our school com-

munity an enjoyable and well deserved summer break.

This year marked the 30th Anniversary of the Bradford Fire disaster at which 2 Parkside students, Felix and Rupert Greenwood lost their lives along with their father Peter. Parkside School keeps their memory alive by presenting The Greenwood Memorial Prize for The Parkside School Child of Achievement every year. This year on Monday May 11th members of the Student Leadership Team and staff planted a cherry blossom tree in the grounds in memory of Felix and Ru-

pert. Mr Taylor, the Headteacher said it was important to mark the occasion and planting the tree was symbolic of new beginnings, and in a time of such sadness something positive. He also said the

school was honoured that Mrs Greenwood was able to attend and for the con-tinuing relationship with the Greenwood family. Poetry was read by students: Archie Wright, Chloe Greenwood, Edward Denby, Violet Kaye and Sophie Wood. James Turton who was a student at Parkside with Felix and Rupert, planted the tree and Mrs Greenwood laid the plaque. Mr Turton said he felt it was important to attend to keep the continuity of remembrance. During the same week Parkside students and staff wore Claret and Amber for the day in honour of the victims and also to raise money for the Bradford Burns Unit. We raised a total of £685.26.

The ‘FSYA Theatre Group’ was in school to work with some of our students. The students took part in workshops and talked about the fire, some of them had relatives who had been in the ground on the day, and they shared their ex-perience with the group. In the afternoon there was an informative talk held in the hall. Matt and Will from FSYA tried to recreate the atmosphere of the day and the sequence of events that led to the loss of 56 lives. They spoke

about the acts of heroism and how the community pulled together in the aftermath of the disaster. The Legacy of the Bradford Fire is that grounds are so much safer, in terms of fire exits etc. Mrs Greenwood who lost both her sons and husband spoke about the tragedy and also about The Felix and Rupert Greenwood Memorial Travel Fund which was set up in February 1994 by Mrs Green-wood, in memory of her sons. The Fund is for young people, living in the Denholme area, between the ages of 10 – 25 years, to broaden their cultural, educational and personal development through the experience of travel. Grants of up to £200 are available. All the trustees ask

is that on their return, the young person tells them all about their trip. Mrs Greenwood also talked about the importance of qualif ications particularly for girls. Mr Taylor said “Through the Greenwood family (and staff currently here at Parkside) the school has close links with the Bradford City Fire. It is only right that we and future generations remember what hap-pened that day and honour the memory of those tragically affected. It was a privilege to have Mrs Greenwood come into school and speak to our students, her words were inspirational. It is our hope that the trust set up by the Greenwood family and the close links developed over the years with Parkside school , will continue to positively impact on the future of the young people of our community. Truly a fitting way to remember the sad events of the day.”

Leeds University Future Scholars Awards On Friday 22nd May, 5 Year 9 students attended the University of Leeds Future Scholars Awards 2015. This event is organ-ised by Future Scholars (used to be the Dux Awards) and the aim is to inspire future scholars to aim high and look at applying to one of the Russell Group Universities when they are older. Students took part in engagement activities with

current students at the University, doing a taster "Give it a go" session with Leeds University Union, they also had the oppor-tunity to meet with, and ask questions to, a selection of current student to discover more about what life at a Russell Group University is like.

UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge Success Huge congratulations to Chloe Carr on receiving a Certificate of Merit in this year's follow on round to the in-termediate Maths Challenge. After achieving a Gold in this competition she was invited to take part in the Intermediate Kangaroo, along with six million students worldwide. The top 25% in the UK, of which Chloe was one, received a Merit certificate. We are very proud of her achievements in this competition and in Maths in general. Other students at Parkside also achieved success in this year's Challenge, an annual national competition, with one gold, 2 silvers and 8 bronzes. Over 200.000 students from across the UK sat the Intermediate Challenge with roughly the top 6% receiving a gold certificate, the next 13% a silver and the next 21% bronze. The Parkside winners were: Cameron Allatt, Lucy Heyes and Victoria Trudgill (Year 11) Chloe Carr, James Rogers, May Campbell and Chloe Greenwood (Year 10) Megan Conway, Poppy Ballantine, Alana Wharton and Ben Ellis (Year 9) Lynne Laoufir Assistant Head of Maths

Sky Sports’ Living for Sport Programme Former rugby international and Sky Sports’ mentor Paul Broadbent kicked off the project with a day of workshops which reinforced the characteristics required to be a successful learner and then put the students through their paces with a range of physical challenges. The pilot project will see a group of football loving Y10 GCSE pupils working in teams within their Maths lessons and competing in a 5-a-side league. The students will use the football games to gather data to analyse in their Maths lessons and then apply this data and functional knowledge to their GCSE exam questions. Furthermore, the pupils will also be running a Gifted and Talented Maths championship for the Parkside feeder schools during the summer term. This will be a very challenging and exciting project for the students to be part of. It has personalised learning at its heart and allows the pupils to truly conceptualise the data they are gathering and analysing. Paul will be back to see progress the students have made in the summer when they run a range of Gifted and Talented Maths workshops for Parkside's feeder primary schools. Mr Barratt and Mr Russell

S p o r t s L e a d e r s U K We launched the Sports Leaders UK Level One qualification this summer with Year 10 students. Within two weeks the students were capable and showing willing to coach younger children in sport. We arranged for them to coach on Thursday afternoons at Cullingworth Primary with Year 3-6 children. The leaders have shown excellent qualities so far, taking activities such as Dinosaur Eggs, The Hoop Game and Dragons and Snatchers. We have some superb sports leaders who hope to pass the Sports Leaders

UK qualification, giving them the experience they need to improve life skills through sports leadership. Sports leadership qualifications start from as little as six hours, they fit easily into the national curricu-lum and help young people to become more qualified, experienced, employable, community minded, ambitious and active. Our current sports leaders set a fantastic example to the Cullingworth Primary

students and have made me very proud in the last few weeks. Miss Challinor Teacher of PE

Girls’ Football On Thursday 16th April three Year 9 girls Hollie Williams, Sophie Moulden and Megan Brieley attend-ed a Junior Football Association Leaders Course at Battyford, Mirfield. All three girls play for Bradford City Girls under 14 and approximately 10 girls from the club attended. The purpose of the qualification is to get a basic un-derstanding on how to run a club, using coaching skill, refereeing, Match Day Management, Team Man-agement, Abusive Parents and competition formats. At the end of the course each student has to do 4 hours of voluntary work which can include coaching, refereeing, community work or at school helping with a lesson. The purpose of the course is a stepping stone for the FA Level 1 which can be done at 16 years. Well Done Year 9's. Mrs Higginson

Parkside at the Double

Parkside school U14 netball team (below left) recently completed a successful season by adding the

Bradford School U14 league title to the Bradford Schools U14 tournament which they won earlier in the

season. This was a great team effort brought about through consistent displays and performance all sea-

son. In addition the U13 Netballer Team (below right) were runners up in the Bradford Schools Netball

League. Well Done Girls! Mrs Jordan

Three Parkside students were chosen as

‘Student of the Year’ for their respective

courses. They are: Mark Ormondroyd for

Construction, Leah Whalebone for Child Development and

Scott Robinson for Motor Vehicle. They were described as

hard working and completed tasks to a high level. The stu-

dents were presented with certificates at Leeds City College

Keighley. Well Done to you all. Robert Johnson

On the hottest day of the year so far Mrs Gilert

and I took a group of 8 Yr 12 students to Cam-

bridge University. Despite the stifling 36 de-

grees C in the minibus, we had a good run

down and checked into our accommodation in

Queen’s College at 3pm. That afternoon we

found our bearings by visiting the various col-

leges and were given a guided tour of Magda-

len College. In the evening we met up with

Helena Blair, former Parkside student and

Cambridge graduate, who now works as a

school liaison officer. She gave us an insight

into what studying at the top university in the

country actually involved. The following day,

after breakfast in the huge, Hogwarts-like din-

ing room, we had talks on how to apply to Oxford or Cambridge before splitting up to go to subject specif-

ic talks. In the afternoon students were free to visit any of the colleges that took their fancy. All agreed

they had been very impressed with what they experienced and at least two of our students have decided

they are going to apply. Jane Evans Assistant Headteacher

Morrisons: Let's Work To mark the end of the 2015 Morrisons: Let's Work scheme, Year 12 students spent the day at Hilmore House in Bradford meeting and working with the Morrison's Graduate Team and staff. As well as getting a tour of the building, students visited 'M Kitchen', the Morrisons Academy and

made presentations on their 'Let's Work' experience. The Year 13 Leavers Prom took place on Friday, July 3rd at The Midland Hotel. The students worked tirelessly setting up for what was to be a wonderful event. As we end the school year I would like to thank our Post 16 Stu-dent Council who have contributed a great deal to our school and the local community: Harry Stewart, Kate Johnson, Isaac Murray, Caleb Murray, Tom Vietri, Olivia Hague, Emma Shaw, Holly Holmes, Lucy Eden, Ella Roberts, Amy Hanson, Rheanna Feather. Ethan Hodson and Molly Murphy. We wish you all the very best in the future. Phil Logan P16

Trip to Cambridge University

Good evening from Krakow. extract taken from the blog: http://parksidehuman.wordpress.com/

Well what a day we have had. After an intense day of travelling yesterday, the students were very

excited to set their alarms for 5am and ready to get on the coach at 5.50! As we have come to expect,

they did us proud and were all ready and waiting in reception at the right time. We set off on the hour

long journey to Oswiecim, the town where Auschwitz-Birkenau is located. The group split into 2 and we

started our guided tour of the Nazi camps. This is the 4th time I have run this trip, and therefore the 4th

time I have been to Auschwitz. I can honestly say that today’s visit was one of the most poignant and

emotional mornings of my life; the guides to both groups were incredible and gave us such personal and

thought provoking insights into the war. Our students were the most reflective I have ever taken and

made all staff very proud. As always, it was an incredibly emotional morning and has given us all

something to think about for the rest of our lives.

We all took the chance on the journey back to

the hotel to catch up on some sleep. Lunch in

the main square was our next port of call, with

most students hitting McDonalds whilst the

staff headed for a chicken kebab. Finally we

all ended up back in our hotel rooms for a

quiet afternoon, nap time and prep time before

our evening meal at the Hard Rock Cafe. Our

evening meal was lovely, and the staff at the

Hard Rock went above and beyond to make

our evening as fun as possible. The waitress

seemed very happy to have a group from

Yorkshire; she said we had great accents and that we were much more fun than the Norwegian group

that had been in earlier. Win! Today was Bailey’s birthday and again the Hard Rock went all out with a

whole restaurant sing song and a special ice cream sundae along with candle.

We gave the group some free time after dinner. The main square soon became filled with Parkside

students zooming round on rented trike scooters. They all seemed to have a great time, and even

allowed the teachers some time on the scooters (Mrs Gibbs and I were the slow coaches!)

Overall, an incredible day. Now time for a sleep that lasts over 4 hours, ready for the walking tour

tomorrow. Rebecca Stothers Head of Religious Education

English-Reading for Pleasure!

Over this half term in English one lesson each week has been dedicated to reading for pleasure. Reading

regularly can be particularly helpful to boost skills in English which can also have an impact in other

lessons. All students in all year groups were given the opportunity to go to the library at the start of this

half term and choose a book. The students have responded well to this and many have remarked that

they have enjoyed this opportunity and have

read much more than they normally would do.

We have also sent out a list of books that

might be of interest to your son or daughter to

continue their reading habit over the summer.

There are also a couple of websites they might

like to look at to help them find the right book.

It would be fantastic if they could keep up this

reading over the summer, some might need

more encouragement than others…happy

reading! Matthew Pickard Assistant Head of

The Year 11 Class of 2015 celebrated their Prom on Thursday 9th July at the Mercure Hotel in Bingley. The event was fantastically well attended by students and staff, the weather was great and everyone looked amaz-ing. Needless to say, the atmosphere was also terrific and was a great way to mark the end of an era for our students and also many of the staff.
