Haysville School District since 1993. PAT is a free program for any expecting
families or families with children from birth to 3 years who reside in U.S.D. 261.
Recent research has shown that the experiences you give your child in the years
from birth to three are critical for success later on in school and in life!

Back into Routines
Dear Parents,
It’s great to be back in the swing of things this year and the PAT staff is looking forward to seeing
you at our upcoming events. We are starting off the year with a playgroup at the park and a zoo
trip in September. If you haven’t had a chance to meet our new sec-
retary, Amy Sheler, please welcome her the next time you either call or come into Parents As Teach-
ers. Amy is a mom to four kids and participated in PAT herself with her own children. Amy will be
working from 8 to 11 each morning and has been a wonderful addition to our staff.
We kicked off our new curriculum with our August home visits. As you may have noticed, we are put-
ting a lot more emphasis on giving pertinent infor-mation to you that you can use to facilitate your child’s learning throughout the month. The focus
then, is less on what WE do with your child and more on what YOU do with your child. We will be
there to coach and give information that we think you will find helpful.
September is often the end of summer and what a summer it has been this year! Here’s hoping you
have some pleasant days to be outdoors together. See you soon.

Interactive Finger Plays
On Your Face
On your face you have a nose. And way down here you have ten toes.
Two eyes that blink, And a head to think.
You have a chin and very near,
You have two ears to help you hear. Arms go high and arms go low A great big hug to say hello.
Preparation and Instructions: Sit in front of the child, either on the floor or in two chairs.
Remember that your facial expressions need to be exaggerated and filled with delight.

long. Pick the time that works best for you and your child and
come explore. Explorer Lab will be held in the PAT I.D.E.A.
Room (148 Stewart in Haysville). Explorer Lab will incorpo-
rate language and literature activities, as well as offer many ac-
tivities designed to give kids hands-on experiences in science,
cooking, and math. Parent participation is also required in this
activity. There will be no cost to attend.
Growing Cooks is a hands-on cooking experience for parent and
child that takes place approximately 4-5 times a year. Be-
cause we must purchase ingredients ahead of time, you must
be signed up to attend. We only have room for 12 children
at each Growing Cooks Class. There is a sign-up sheet in the
IDEA Room or you can call the PAT office to reserve your
spot now. The first Growing Cooks Class is scheduled for
Sept. 21st and will take place in the kitchen area of The Learn-
ing Center (150 Stewart—across from the PAT office). Parent
participation is required.

Special activities give parents and kids an opportunity to have new
experiences together which helps develop language and intellectual skills.
While we pay most of the cost of these events, we do charge a small fee for
some of these events to help offset our costs. Please mark the following dates
on your calendar and plan to attend.
Sept. 16th @ 9:50 a.m. Sedgwick County Zoo Trip. $2 per adult and child 3 and older. Children 2 and under are free.
Oct. 7th @ 9:30 a.m. Trip to Bergmann’s Pumpkin Farm located at 8401 S. Meridian. $2 per child in attend-
ance.
Nov. 15th @ 6:30-7:30 p.m. Block Fest Event—for Dads(and other male role models). Held at AHS . There is no charge.

SPECIAL PAT ACTIVITIES

days from 9:30—10:45 a.m. Playgroups are held at the PAT
play room (134 Stewart in Haysville) unless otherwise noted.
Playgroups are a “come and go” activity that give your child the
opportunity to practice and learn social and problem-solving
skills and is also a chance for you to meet other parents. Parent participation is
required . There is no cost to attend.
“Gross Motor” Playgroups take place twice a year at the
Alt. H.S. gym (located 4 doors down from the P.A.T. Office).
These playgroups give the kids a large place to run, jump &
play. The first Gross Motor Playgroup is scheduled for
October 21st. There is no cost to attend.

Both Parents as Teachers and Bridge to Bright Beginnings use playdough often. You can help us out by making a batch or two of playdough. See recipe below. Parents as Teachers is also always in need of : Metal lids from frozen juice cans If you can help us out with these items, please drop them by the P.A.T. office or give them to your parent educator at your next home visit. Thank you!!
Playdough Recipe
2 cups boiling water
2 pkgs. Unsweetened kool-aid (any color)
2½ to 3 cups of flour
½ cup salt
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (found in the spice isle)
3 Tablespoons vegetable oil Add kool-aid to boiling water and dissolve. Then mix in other ingredi-ents and knead. If sticky, you may need to add additional flour.
Keeps well, nice fragrance, very colorful, and has wonderfully soft flexibility.

Keep track of your event calendar which is found inside the
newsletter. Print it out if you need to and stick it on the fridge
with a magnet. Playgroup times and activities may vary occa-
sionally so you need to check your calendar each time you plan
to attend an activity.
Try, if at all possible, to keep your home visit appointments.
We do understand if an unexpected emergency or illness occurs
and ask that you give us a call in those situations.
Please turn the TV off during your home visit and join your
parent educator in focusing on your child. We want you and your
child both to enjoy our visit and request that a parent be in the
room during home visits.
Use common sense during cold and flu season. We’ll work
hard to keep the playroom clean and sanitary but ask you also
help by keeping your child home when he/she is showing any
signs of illness. We will also provide hand sanitizer and ask
that you use this before and after activities to cut down on
germs in the playroom.
In addition to attending groups, plan to attend the special
events we offer. These activities give your child an opportunity
to experience things he may not be able to otherwise and will en-
courage language, cognitive, social and motor development.
When there is a cost associated with the activity, we will ask you
to pay $2 per person attending. PAT will cover the rest of the
cost!
Please use appropriate kid-friendly language at all PAT activi-
ties as little ears are always listening. : )
Smoking is not allowed anywhere on school property, which
includes the parking lot.

Located at 201 S. Lulu. $2 per person.
Jan. 31st @ 6:30 p.m. Mom’s Meal. This is an
evening event especially for our PAT moms held at The
Learning Center. There is no charge.
Feb. 28th @ 6:30—7:30 p.m. Tool Time. This is an evening
event for parents and children to experience some hands-on fun.
Held at the Alternative High School Gym. There is no charge.
Apr. 17th @ 6:30—7:30 p.m. Big Truck Night. This is an evening event held in our parking lot. There
is no charge.
May 8th @ 6:00—7:30 p.m. PAT Family Picnic at Riggs
Park. There is no charge. We just ask that you bring a side
dish to share.
All Parents as Teachers and Bridge to Bright Beginnings families
are encouraged to participate in any of these activities. Daycare
providers or other family members are welcome to attend with your
child if you are unable to do so. Research shows that the more opportu-
nities your child has to learn and develop, the more brain development
