Centennial is once again launching our spring fundraiser, selling Aunt Sarah Simply Delicious Chocolate Bars. This year the goal is to raise funds to support guest speakers from We Day, in-school and off-campus special opportunities in April, May & June and for a variety of classroom technology items. Centennial also helped support a sister school (grade 7&8) in our community last year by donating 10% or our fundraising profits for their purchase of musical instruments and we would like to help another school this year. The chocolate bars were sent home on Friday April 12th and all monies and unsold chocolate bars will be returned to the school on Monday April 29th. There are many prizes for the top selling stu-dents which include gift certificates, iPod Touch 4, iPad Mini, PS3 Playstation, limo lunch and a pizza lunch.

We will be returning to Centre in the Square on Tuesday, June 25 at 7:00 p.m. for our graduation ceremony! This venue offers numerous advantages, most notably the fact that all family members who wish to attend can be accommodated. Further details about graduation, such as the dance following the ceremony and the purchase of tickets, will be sent home at a later date. Please mark this date on your calendar at home, and feel free to contact Mrs. Adams or Mr. Hughes at the school.

Congratulations to all students who represented Centennial at the Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair on April 9th. They started their day being judged by four different judges followed by a session where they shared their projects with a few hundred visiting students, looking for ideas for their first science fair project for next year. Later in the afternoon they were involved in an environmental education program titled “We All Live Downstream”. They considered issues about both air and water quality and how they could protect these crucial resources. Students also took part in a bus trip, investigating old and new features of how people have interacted with the Grand River over time. After an open house for the public in the evening, the day concluded with an awards ceremony where the following medals were awarded: Pewter Medal Kate M. and Sophia B.- How do words affect a rumor 803 Samantha C.- Who Is Better at Spatial Abilities? 804 Avery M. and Narges J.- Did You Hear That? 804 James D. and Jonathan T. - Intentional Blindness 805 Sylvia G.- Substance help bean growth 805 Yousaf R. and Scott P.– The Exploration of LED Wavelengths 807 Sydney B.and M.Henderson - Proxemics 809 Ioana D. - How Questions and Statements Affect the Mind 8C7 Max C. - Damping the Din 8C7 Bronze Medal Julia Z.. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Although the weather outside may not reflect the fact that Spring is here, the activities and energy at Centennial Public School certainly indicate that we have indeed moved into Spring! Our spring fundraiser began on April 11th with our kick-off assembly for the students. Money from this campaign will be used to support our We Day speaker, Molly Burke, and various enriching opportunities for all our students such as our Youth Symposium and Aussie X. Thanks to Tracey Nairn for her leadership with this campaign and to all our students and families for supporting this event. Spring plans are underway for track-and-field, year-end trips, graduation and much more. Please be watching for various notes to come home in the weeks to come. You can also keep informed through the Centennial website that we update on a regular basis (cnw.wrdsb.ca). With spring comes a change in attire. Our guidelines for school clothing can be found in the school planner and are listed below. These guidelines are intended to reinforce a sense of school pride, responsibility and encourage a positive learning environment. Dress-code: tops must cover midriffs; clothing should not have suggestive or offensive messages; low cut shorts, halter tops, excessively tight, off the shoulder tops, or see-through garments are not appropriate; clothing must be worn so undergarments are not visible; length of shorts and skirts should allow students to sit, bend and walk with dignity. We thank you in advance for your continued support. The staff at Centennial are so pleased with the continued progress your children are making and we all look forward to a fantastic year end at Centennial.

B. Adams

Respect Poster – Silvia George Yearbook – Amy Liang and Linda Chen Planner – Linda Chen and Sarah Mayo School Composite Photo – Abbey Macdonald Thank you to all the artists that participated. Mr. Kauk

Centennial's Social Justice group hosted our Mini We Day on Thursday, April 18th. Amber Schuler (Me To We speaker) as well as current and previous Centennial students, shared their own We Day and Me To We life-changing experiences. All students were inspired to "Be The Change" and join Free The Children's movement to make the world a better place. Time was also spent in classrooms learning about basic human rights and in particular, the United Nations convention on the Rights of a Child. In the afternoon, the whole school participated in the "We are Silent" campaign. This was a time when, through silence, students were able to stand up for children around the world who are silenced by the denial of their basic human rights. Upcoming Events: On May 15th, we are very excited to welcome Molly Burke to Centennial! Molly is a Me To We inspirational speaker and spoke at We Day Waterloo. Her message "Light After Darkness: Overcoming Bullying, Defining Yourself and Helping Others" will motivate our students to think about how any challenge in life, whether it's bullying, mental illness or a loss of vision, came be overcome. -A.
