Ins & Outs

This week I had the opportunity to encourage teachers and other Rehoboth Christian School staff that they are all part of a team, each with their own skill set and vital to the success of the mission of Rehoboth Christian School. You parents are also part of the RCS team and integral to the success of your children!

One of the best ways to participate in this team is by attending Parent-Teacher conferences next week. Conferences provide the opportunity to foster the relationship between school and home. It communicates to our children that we want to know what and how they are learning at school. It communicates to teachers that parents consider them an important part of the team. Plans are made for improvement, strategies can be discussed for growth, and teammates come together to work toward the success of our students. So, please, if you have not already done so, make plans to attend next week’s Parent-Teacher conferences. If you are new to Rehoboth Christian School, let me take a brief moment to help you understand how Parent-Teacher conferences work because they do differ from building to building. In the Elementary School, you should have received a confirmation of the time you have signed up for. If you have not, you are welcome to contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Jim. Elementary conferences take place next week Monday and Tuesday from 3PM to 7PM both nights. Conferences are held in teacher’s classrooms. In the Middle School, parents sign up via email for the time slot that works best for them. If you have not done so, be sure to contact the Middle School to sign up for a time slot. Middle school conferences take place in teacher’s classrooms and are scheduled for next week Monday and Tuesday from 4PM to 8PM. Conferences in the High School take on a different feel than the Elementary and Middle Schools. They take place next week Monday from 4PM to 7PM and next week Tuesday from 3PM to 7PM. Both nights conferences are held in the Auxiliary Gym in the Sports and Fitness Center. Once parents sign in at High School Conferences they are free to meet with High School teachers as they are available. Parents are encouraged to meet with all of their child’s High School teachers. Be sure to enjoy the long weekend that lies ahead, I know I will, but also be sure to make it a priority to be at Parent-Teacher conferences next week Monday and Tuesday night! The PSAT-NMSQT is the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and it functions as the initial qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation competition. This Scholarship program is very prestigious and qualifying for it starts with an 11th grade student’s PSAT-NMSQT score. 10th graders taking it will be getting a preview prior to them taking it the following year for scholarship qualification. More information on this test can be found at http://www.collegeboard.com/psat 9th graders worked on their NWEA testing and Seniors either took the ASVAB or worked on their senior portfolios and College/Scholarship applications. All School Announcements

School Bus Evacuation Drill - RCS will be conducting our annual "School Bus Evacuation Drill." We will do this on

campus in the mornings for the next 3 to 4 weeks. We will conduct drills on one or two buses per week until drills are completed on all seven buses. Evacuation drills consist of the following: exit through the front door, exit through the back door, and exit through both front and back doors. We will do this in the Sports and Fitness Center parking lot in a coned off section. If a drill takes longer than expected, the students will be excused for being tardy. We don't foresee anyone being later than approximately 10 to 15 minutes for 1st period. If you have any questions, please feel free to call James Wilson, Transportation Director at 505.726.9622. From the School Nurse -Parents and guardians of our precious children at RCS, I ask that you send in your child’s updated immunization records, especially those updates from the past spring and summer. It is mandated by the state that all children are properly immunized unless you have a form from the state that says your child is exempt. Many students do not have the space filled in that they have received Tdap, which is required for all students 11 years of age and older. We will be offering the influenza shot again this November. We will have more information on this later. The Flu Clinic date is November 12 at the Elementary Teacher’s Lounge. We will be giving the flu mist. The injectable will be administered only if your student has an underlying illness that prevents them from getting the mist.

Sports and Fitness Center– Please remember that the lobby of the SFC is not a place for hanging out after school. Please pick up your children right away after school at 3:20 p.m. or have them ride the bus home. Athletes are with their teams on the field or in the gym. There is no supervision of students after school if they are not athletes. We want to ensure a safe environment for our children, coaches, athletes, and facility. High School Students using the fitness center are allowed to use it from 4 to 6 pm after school. Staff on duty in the fitness center, leave at 6:00 p.m. and there is no supervision of students after that. If a student decides to end his or her workout early, they will need to be picked up at that time and not loiter in the lobby area. Thank you. Schedules: At certain times during the season, times and dates of scheduled games are subject to change based on unforeseen circumstances. We will try to communicate this more effectively through our head coaches, the master calendar, and parent news. Thank you. Eligibility: The end of Quarter 1 ended last week on Friday. Please check up on your child’s progress in each of their classes. Students in middle and high school must pass Quarter 1 with a 2.0 GPA or higher and not have 2 or more F’s. your child is allowed to practice. If you need more info please contact, Girls Basketball Coach, Myron Postma and Boys Basketball Coach, Kevin Zwiers. Working Together: We want to encourage all parents of Rehoboth Christian School to take the “Positive Sport Parenting” course online at www.nfhslearn.com. Create an account and take the FREE course. T-shirts for sale: At every home game this season we will be selling Rehoboth Lynx T-shirts. Shirts are $10 each.

Movie to watch: This Friday, Oct. 16, 2015 a great movie will be coming out. I highly recommend parents, coaches and athletes to go see this movie. The movie is called “Woodlawn.” It is about a gifted high school football player who must learn to boldly embrace his talent and his faith as he battles racial tensions on and off the field. It’s a moving and inspirational new film based on the true story of how love and unity overcame hate and division in early 1970s Birmingham, Ala. The closest place movie will be shown is in Farmington, NM and Albuquerque, NM. www.woodlawnmovie.com Adrian Pete, Athletic Director
