MESSAGES FROM OUR STAFF

A MESSAGE FROM OUR INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP TEAM

Parents of K-5th grade scholars using DreamBox at home, please encourage your child to follow these best practices.

1. Try every problem: Persist even when it is hard. 2. Finish every lesson: Persevere instead of choosing another lesson. 3. Utilize in-lesson support: The feedback, hints, and help are created to assist you. 4. Use headphones with volume on: Listen to the directions, assistance and feedback. 5. Work independently: Don’t let others do your work for you.

DreamBox adapts lessons and recommendations based on the needs of each learner, children always have just the right level of support when and where it is needed. Home usage expectations for your child are:

· Plan at least 10-20 minutes for each session and plan to complete at least five lessons a week. · The only person that should be playing on your child’s account is your child. This is the only way DreamBox can assess their understanding of math concepts. · Use the Activity Feed in your Family Insight Dashboard to monitor your child’s progress. If they are stuck on a lesson, you can view it by hitting the “Play Lesson” button and help guide them with facilitated discussion. Try to avoid helping them directly in their student environment.

Parents can also receive updates and access to student growth using the Parent Dashboard. Follow the directions on this video for help: https://tinyurl.com/dreamboxinfo

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

Hello J.P. Ryon families!

Are your Scholars having difficulty staying motivated? It is completely normal as they have had to make a swift shift to a new way of learning. This month we will be focusing on strategies to keep our scholars motivated to stay engaged in learning. So how do we do that? Reinforcers!

Some students will require a concrete reward system in place to motivate them to complete academic and other non-preferred tasks. Here are a few types of reinforcement systems that can be individualized for your child:

·Behavior chart   – For students who are older, a behavior chart can be individualized in a variety of ways to track your child’s behavior across the day. In this system, rules are established and students earn points throughout the day for following rules and completing activities. If they meet their pre-established goal, they are able to earn a preferred activity or item. A popular reinforcing activity is electronics time.

· Token board – For students who require visual supports or more immediate rewards, a token system may be best. This strategy uses a token or object (e.g. poker chip, penny, smiley face, sticker, check mark, etc.) to reinforce appropriate working or behavior. Establish a total number of tokens the child must earn (typically blank squares on a token board and no more than 3 - 10 tokens). As the student is working, adults give tokens and verbal praise for completing a task. When they fill the board, the student earns a pre-established reward.

·If/then – Some students may require simple language or visuals to understand that they need to complete a task to earn a reward. Either verbally or with visual supports you state, “If you _______, then you can _______.” For example, “If you trace the letters, then you can play on the iPad.” These students would benefit from a work then break type of schedule throughout the day.

MUSIC - Activities from General Music Teacher, Mr. Moore – [email protected]

Hello everyone! I am looking forward to progressing through the month of May as we continue through our first full week! For this week, our younger scholars (PreK and K) are able to reference Kiboomers on YouTube to find new and exciting songs for them to dance and sing along to. Our older scholars (1st - 5th) can choose a song and work on memorizing at most 1 minute of that song. Next week I will reveal what we will do with those songs, but for now just memorize them. Have a wonderful week and stay safe!

Week 2: Kicking

National Standards:

K- Kicks a stationary ball from a stationary position, demonstrating 2 of the 5 elements of a mature kicking pattern (S1.E21.K)

1st- Approaches a stationary ball and kicks it forward demonstrating 2 of 5 critical elements of a mature pattern (S1.E21.1)

2nd- Uses a continuous running approach and kicks a moving ball, demonstrating 3 of 5 critical elements of a mature pattern (S1.E21.2)

3rd- Uses a continuous running approach and intentionally performs a kick along the ground and a kick in the air, demonstrating 4 of 5 critical elements of a mature pattern for each (S1.E21.3a)

4th- Kicks along the ground and in the air, and punts using mature patterns (S1.E21.4)

5th- Demonstrates mature patterns of kicking and punting in small-sided practice task environments (S1.E21.5)

Kicking Cues:

· Arms extend forward in preparation for kicking action · Make contact directly behind center of the ball · Make contact with the ball using your shoelaces or top of foot · Trunk leans back slightly in preparation for kicking action. · Follow through with kicking leg extending forward and upward toward target

Ground Kicking Activity: Wall kick

Focus on contact with top of foot. Student is 10feet away from wall. On signal, students kick the ball to the wall and then retrieve it, placing the ball back to start position.

Kick in Air Activity: Kick and Chase Race

· Race is against the clock. · The goal is for you and your partner to make as many clearing kicks as you can in 2 minutes. · Partner 1 will use a clearing kick, sending the ball as far out into the open space as possible. · After the ball is kicked, Partner 2 will count 2 “Mississippi’s” and then run fast to collect the ball and bring it back. · Partner 2 will set the ball back at the start spot and continue the race by taking a turn to make a clearing kick. Partner 1 will then run to collect the ball. Keep repeating until you hear the stop signal.

(If you do not have a partner preform both activities once you kick your ball race out and retrieve it as fast as you can)

Let’s Fly:

Today I would like you to make a paper airplane. Throw it and see how far it flies. This activity can be done inside or outside (with parental permission). Just watch out, windy days will make it harder to fly your plane.

Basic Paper Airplane ✈ Folding Instructions

1. Fold the paper in half.

2. Unfold and then fold the corners into the center line.

3. Fold the top edges to the center.

4. Fold the plane in half.
