PRINCIPAL`S MESSAGE

Welcome back Plum Tree for the 2010-2011 school year! A special welcome to all of our new Kindergarten and Grade 1 French Immersion students. Parents, we hope you will find this handbook helpful, and anticipate your experiences at Plum Tree will B. SHARP!

Beginning in January, 2009, Plum Tree Park Staff began working closely with the administration and staff at Miller's Grove and Settler's Green. This new initiative of the Ministry was to create 'Triads' of "Schools Helping Schools". By working together in larger professional learning communities, and sharing best practices, the goal is to further improve student achievement. This is proving to be an exciting and rich learning opportunity for all the schools now involved across the province. Pending a decision of the Board's purchase of the adjacent park and a confirmation of the Ministry's proposal for the full day kindergarten, the construction of our double gym is temporarily in a holding pattern. This school year should see these discussions finalized and plans forthcoming.

Since Sabrina's Law, 2005 came into effect, creating a safe and healthy environment for all students with life threatening allergies, (within the limits of legislation, school configuration and number of available staff) is our highest priority! While it is impossible to create a totally risk free environment, school staff, students and parents can take important steps to minimize potentially life threatening and/or fatal allergic reactions. The reaction can develop within seconds of exposure! A life-threatening anaphylaxis reaction can be triggered by foods such as peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, milk, eggs, soy, sesame seed and wheat as well as insect stings, medication, exercise or latex.

All parents are asked: (a) not to send home-baked or commercially prepared products for snacks/treats for class parties; and, (b) not to include nut products in lunches/treats. Furthermore, we have now implemented a process where students may have their snacks during instructional times to better monitor potential allergic situations, avoid any opportunity for choking, reduce garbage and bees attracted to our garbage, and ensure recess is about EXERCISE—not eating and playing simultaneously. Please send easy to eat, bite size and "tidy" snacks!

To best maintain regular, ongoing communication with you, in addition to this calendar, we will send our Plum Line Newsletters will be out once a month on the last Thursday of the month. These will come to you on the following dates: Sept. 30, Oct. 28, Nov. 25, Dec. 16, Jan. 27, Feb. 24,

Mar. 31, Apr. 28, May 26, June 9 and June 30th. Note the symbol in the attached calendar on these dates! Pat Douglas

If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, we ask that you telephone the school attendance check number before 9:00 a.m. An answering machine is ready to receive your calls from 24 hours a day. Please leave your child's name, teacher's name, the reason for the absence, and the duration of the absence if known. If the duration of absence is not known we ask that you telephone the school every day to confirm the continued absence.

ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY

It is very important for students to attend regularly and to arrive on time. Loss of time is very disruptive to a pupil`s progress. When absent, a note of explanation is required upon the student`s return. Absence of short duration may be handled by a phone call - see attendance check program sheet. For prolonged absence, not due to illness, written notification is required.

When a student becomes ill during the day, and is unable to function in the school setting, arrangements for the child to go home will be made. School staff appreciate parent cooperation when such arrangements are necessary. It is recommended that a contingency plan be in place should parents be unable to attend to a child who is ill. It is an expectation that children who are well enough to attend school are well enough to go outside during recess breaks in the morning, afternoon and at noon hour.

ATTENDANCE CHECK PROGRAM

THE ATTENDANCE CHECK TELEPHONE NUMBER IS 905 824-0155 ext. 1

FIVE DAY CYCLE Plum Tree Park P.S. will operate on a five day cycle this year. This five day cycle allows for our students to be timetabled for a physical education, music, art and computer period each cycle. The first day of school is Tuesday, September 7th and is a Day 1. Days of the cycle are marked at the top of each school day on the calendar for the entire year. Please note that days of the cycle will remain unchanged in the event of a school closure due to inclement weather.

All calls will be checked by a parent volunteer using the classroom attendance register. If your child is unaccounted for, the attendance check volunteer will telephone home or parents at work to confirm a child's absence. We urge parents to keep the school updated with correct telephone numbers at all times. We strongly depend on parents, guardians, and babysitters to inform us whenever a child will be absent. It is particularly important to call at lunchtime if your child has attended school in the morning and is unable to return for the afternoon program.

CLOSING SCHOOLS DUE TO BAD WEATHER

During the winter months, inclement weather may disrupt bus transportation and regular school operations. This decision is usually made by 6 a.m. You can visit www.peelschools.org, call 905-890-1010 (1-800-668-1146), contact the school 905-824-0155 (after 6:30 am) or tune into local radio or televi-sion stations for information.

You will receive one of the following messages:

Buses are cancelled: This message means that schools remain open for students, but bus services provided by the Peel board are cancelled for the area affected. When buses are cancelled in the morning, they do not run in the afternoon.

Schools are closed: This message means that schools are closed to students. All schools and board facilities are closed. This mes-sage means that schools and board offices are closed to students and staff.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BUSING

THE PEEL BOARD'S ELIGIBILITY DISTANCES FOR TRANSPORTATION ARE AS FOLLOWS :

Kindergarten students - 1.0 km (.625 miles) Grades 1 - 4 students - 1.6 km (1 mile) Grades 5 - 6 students - 2.0 km (1.25 miles) Grades 7 - 8 students - 3.2 km (2 miles)

COURTESY RIDERS: Transportation officers may authorize transportation for students not eligible for transportation under existing board policy, subject to all of the following conditions:

• that available space exists on an existing bus route to the student's designated school • that requests be forwarded to principals, who at their discretion and based on their knowledge of seat availability, will forward in writ-

ing, requests for transportation to the appropriate transportation officer • that the student access the bus at an existing bus stop location • that the parent/guardian sign an acknowledgement form, indicating his/her awareness that the student is not eligible for transportation

and that transportation privileges may be withdrawn at any time • that implementation of service, for the majority of requests, will not be assigned until after Oct. 15 of each school year

BUS SAFETY: The driver is responsible for the safety of the students on the bus and, in addition to driving the vehicle safely, must provide sufficient

supervision to ensure that students do not engage in activities that could be hazardous.

All instances of unacceptable behaviour by students on a bus are to be reported to the principal or designate by the driver. The principal will take appropriate action and, if necessary, discipline will be handled by the principal. Bus drivers should not deal directly with par-ents in matters of this nature.

WITHDRAWAL OF TRANSPORTATION PRIVILEGES : Transportation officers are authorized to withdraw transportation privileges for any student deemed by the principal and transportation officer to be untransportable because the student's be-haviour places his/her safety and the safety of others at risk.

The distances noted are the shortest, safe walking route measured along sidewalks, roadways and paved pedestrian walkways from the school property line to the home property line. This measurement is made using the geographic information system (GIS) component of the board's transportation management software.

Pick Up /Drop Off Traffic Buses load and unload at the front of the school building before and after school and during the lunch period. Please move through the Kiss & Ride lane only to pick up / drop off. THIS IS NOT AN AREA TO PARK OR LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE. If you must park, please use one of the adjacent side streets and enter our field through the pathways. Tenth Line is NOT a suitable parking area or a safe drop off area. The entrance leaving from our NORTH parking lot will be a right turning lane exit ONLY please!

Kiss & Ride Plum Tree Park is fortunate to have the Kiss & Ride Program. Anyone dropping children off at school will be asked to use the drive through drop off lane only! Our parent and student volunteers will be on hand to help direct drivers and assist the children in getting safely through to the walkway. THERE IS NO STOPPING OR PARKING IN THIS AREA. The children should arrive before the bell rings at 9:10 a.m., as supervision at the front of the school ceases at this time. If your child is late for school, it is important that he/she reports to the office before going to the classroom.

Visitors to the School Everyone who is not a student or staff member is considered a visitor. All visitors , by Peel Board Policy, must sign in at the office and pick up an identification badge to be in the school. Parents/guardians are asked to meet their children at the outside exit door or other designated area as arranged, but not in the halls please. Safety and congestion issues are critical. Thank you for your cooperation. All staff and regular volunteers wear purple lanyards and official identification that students can easily identify!

Criminal Reference Checks Every volunteer who works with Plum Tree children must have a criminal reference check completed. Parents cannot go on trips, drive students, help with skating etc., unless you have a Criminal Reference Check approved with the Peel District School Board.

Bicycles Parents should discuss bicycle safety with their children. Normally bikes should be placed in the bicycle racks and locked, however, due to ongoing construction, our racks are not currently available. The school is NOT responsible for theft or damage of bikes at school. Children must not ride bikes on school property.

Scooters, Skateboards & Roller Blades We are asking students not to bring scooters, skateboards or rollerblades to school both for safety reasons and because we do not have adequate space either inside or outside for safe storage.

Smoking Policy It is the policy of the Peel District School Board to create and maintain a school and work environment totally free of tobacco smoke. This includes all areas within the building, the school playground, the area adjacent to the Kindergarten play yard and the parking lot. This policy is applicable to all Peel Board facilities.

No Scents Some staff and students have severe allergies to perfumes. Please avoid deodorants and soaps that include perfumes for all students. Thank you!

HUMAN RIGHTS POLICY Plum Tree staff regularly have in-service sessions to familiarize themselves with the impact of diversity. Each month students will be learning about various areas protected by law and to respect one another in all of our wonderful diversity. These teachings will be based on Board policy and resources as well as Ministry approved materials. Our goal is that no one feels exclusive or excluded, but rather everyone is included. A balanced and inclusive approach validates all children’s experiences. Our diversity focus as a school for each month is identified at the bottom of each calendar month. This year, we will be creating special posters for our classes to introduce the language of the Future We Want document concerning the various “isms” listed in the Human Rights Code (e.g. ableism, ageism, sexism…)

HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS

LUNCH AND TREAT PROGRAMS An adequate lunch period is provided so that as many children as possible may go home at noon and benefit from a suitable meal and a break from the Plum Tree Park School environment. For those unable to go home, the following lunch programs are available. (Please, no peanut, shellfish or latex products in lunches!)

Plum Tree Park Public School Lunchroom Supervisor Program Children staying for lunch are assigned to specific lunch areas (classrooms or the gym). The children are supervised on the playground and in the eating areas by lunch supervisors. This service is made available through the support of our Board and families through the profits from our Milk Program, our weekly pizza lunch and treat day programs. At Plum Tree, approximately 550 of our 620 full time students regularly stay at school for lunch. Assistants to supervise over the lunch hour are necessary for student safety and to ensure that teachers have a 40 minute scheduled lunch period. Your support of our pizza and treat programs is most appreciated and necessary to help fund our lunchroom supervisors. Thank you !!! Peel Lunch and After School Program (P.L.A.S.P.) This program is available for students in Grades 1 to 6 and operates during the lunch period providing a supervised setting of up to 30 children in a classroom. Children bring their own lunch, become involved in outdoor play or remain indoors on rainy and very cold days. Supervisors in this program are trained PLASP staff. The fee for this program is $36.00 bi-weekly. For information call the PLASP Head Office at (905) 890-1711. PERSONAL PROPERTY AT SCHOOL

Any personal belongings brought to school are the student`s own responsibility. We encourage students not to bring expensive toys or belongings to school e.g. iPods, digital cameras, calculators, MP3 players, cell phones, game boys, etc. If a child does lose something there is a lost and found box near the staff room. We clean out the box regularly and encourage students and parents to check there for missing items. It helps to label all of your child's belongings.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Throughout the year staff members offer extra curricular events and activities for students at lunch recess. Students sign up for these and it is their responsibility to inform parents of their involvement. We will attempt to post game schedules well in advance so that all students will know when their games are being played. At times special events and programs will be incorporated into the school day.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY AT PLUM TREE PARK P.S.

Keeping students safe on the Internet

In Peel schools, students learn how to use the Internet as a research and communication tool. Learning how to access information through the Internet helps students become aware of available resources that exist out-side the classroom and school library. Students also benefit from learning how to competently analyze and evaluate information. In addition, students may use the Internet for communication where it is appropriate for their learning.

Student Responsibilities

Use of the Internet is viewed as a privilege, not a right. The Internet must not be used for any pur-pose that violates the school's Code of Conduct. This applies to school, work and home Internet use.

Students will:

• demonstrate appropriate online conduct and manners • refrain from improper use of technology, including computer

hacking, cyber-bullying and all other forms of violence, threats and harassment directed at staff, students or the school

• focus Internet time on assigned research topics • credit sourced information – plagiarism and transferring of copy-

right material is not permitted

Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and ensure that users are using the system network responsibly. Users should not expect that files stored on district servers are private.

Rules for personal online safety

To ensure that all students keep safe on the Internet, students must never: • give out personal information such as their address, telephone num-

ber, age or school address • agree to meet with someone they meet online • send pictures of themselves or anything else without permission • respond in any form to messages which make them uncomfortable or

are deemed inappropriate according to the school's Code of Conduct • send or receive offensive pictures or materials • use bad language or send mean public or private messages • use this technology to harass, insult or in any way attack others • damage computers, computers systems, networks, peripherals or

software • violate any copyright laws • use someone else’s password, or trespass in their files, folders or

work • use the network to access or distribute any illegal or illicit material

Posting of videos, photographs online

Although photographing and videotaping of school events is acceptable for a family's own personal use, students and parents should never post these images on public or private websites. Personal information should also not be posted on websites.

Assessment, evaluation and reporting Assessment is an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning. In the classroom, there are three types of assessment: Diagnostic assessment measures prior knowledge, identifies strengths and weaknesses, and provides information for appropriate programming.

Formative assessment provides ongoing feedback to students about their progress, encourages students to build on their strengths and improve upon their weaknesses, and provides the basis of communication among students, parents and the teacher.

Summative assessment provides data by which a grade is assigned that reflects the most consistent and more recent level of achievement.

Evaluation is a judgment made about the assessments of student learning, based on established criteria. These evaluations form the basis of report card grades or marks, and are made so that progress can be communicated to students and parents.

Formal reporting to parents occurs regularly throughout the school year. Summary of Progress Reports are issued twice a year to parents of Kindergarten students. Grade 1 to 8 provincial report cards are issued three times per year. Of course, interviews can be arranged by the teacher or parent at any time as the need arises during the school year.

Regional and provincial testing The Peel board has developed a regional testing program to ensure that all students' records contain consistent, objective evaluation information. It also provides information that allows for programming and gives insight into students’ academic strengths and learning styles.

Peel District School Board POLICIES AND REGULATIONS

SAFE SCHOOLS POLICY (#48) REVISED: In June 2007, the provincial government passed Bill 212, the Education Amendment Act, (Progressive Discipline and School Safety). These pro-visions took effect on February 1, 2008. The revised Peel Safe Schools Policy reflects the new legislation. You can download the full policy from the Peel board website at www.peelschools.org.

Statement of Policy

The Peel District School Board is committed to providing and maintaining safe and healthy environments conducive to learning and working for all. The Board recognizes that encouraging and respectful environments help students to achieve to the best of their ability to improve student success and achievement. We must ensure that students continue to feel safe, nurtured, welcomed, respected and included. The Board’s commitment to providing a supportive and safe environment must be one that changes to meet the needs of students, respects differ-ences, and provides opportunities for all students to succeed. Learning and working environments must be free of negative factors such as abuse, bullying, discrimination, intimidation, hateful words and actions, and physical violence in any form. They must also be sensitive to the diversity, cultural and special needs of individual students. They must clearly demonstrate respect for social justice and human rights, and promote the val-ues needed to develop responsible members of a democratic society. (At Plum Tree Park, our B*SHARP program). The revised Safe Schools policy focuses on positive behaviours as well as supportive structures for students. It moves the emphasis from being punitive to being supportive and nurturing in order to keep students motivated and engaged in the learning process. In providing a positive cli-mate for learning and working our focus is based on four key areas within Bill 212:

• Safe and nurturing environment

• Character development

Peel District School Board Code of Conduct

The Ontario Code of Conduct, Peel District School Board Code of Conduct and the Education Act set clear provincial standards of behaviour and outlines potential consequences for student actions that do not comply with these standards. Students, parents or guardians, volunteers, teachers and other staff members are included in the Code of Conduct, whether they are on Peel District School Board property, on school buses, at school-authorized events or activities, or in circumstances where engaging in an activity will have a negative impact on the school climate. A copy of the complete Plum Tree Park Code of Conduct can be found in the student agenda.

• Bullying prevention and intervention

• Restorative practices

Canada Day

A bright outlook opens us to a world of possibilities.

POSITIVE STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

The staff and students of Plum Tree Park have adopted a values-based approach to good citizenship and discipline. B●SHARP, our school mascot, will be an ever present reminder of our school values. Students, as well as staff and visitors, will be expected to practice these values, make positive choices and be responsible for their choices. To support our values, we have the “BEE” Responsible Program. This program is based on two Rights:

Students have the right to learn - Teachers have the right to teach. The program's philosophy is that every student is responsible for his/her own behaviour.

Our actions are determined by our choices. B●SHARP’s “thumbs up” looks for our good choices!

Students are accountable for all of the values that B•SHARP represents and violation of any of these, in any setting (class, yard, halls, lunchroom, bus), leads to use of the "Bee Responsible" program. Inappropriate behaviour is managed by using a system of Time Out Interventions.

Time Out 1 - in class or "on spot" warning. Time Out 2 - Student is isolated by the teacher and must develop a plan for more appropriate behaviour to return to class, yard etc. This plan may be verbal, but is usually written. (yellow form) Time Out 3 - When teachers have exhausted reasonable efforts to help students change their irresponsible behaviour, the "Bee Responsible"

room provides an opportunity for the student to be separated from the classroom/yard environment. It is a place for the student to calm down, think about the behaviour and develop a plan before returning to class or the playground. Counselling by a staff member and/or administration will also occur. Depending on the seriousness of the student's actions, it may be necessary to forego Time Out 1 and 2 and send the student directly to the "Bee Responsible" room. (orange form)

To ensure that parents are aware that their child has been referred to the "Bee Responsible" Room, students will bring their behaviour plans home for parents to sign and return.

YELLOW/ORANGE SLIPS Yellow/Orange slips are issued for choices that do

not represent the B●SHARP values. Also, the Safe Schools Act 2008—Bill 212

(See Peel District School Board Discipline Policy

Examples of inappropriate behaviour at this level include: ● bullying ● defiance ● swearing/racial slurs/threats ● vandalism ● physical agression ● weapons ● throwing an object that could harm others ● lack of respect for the property of others ● inappropriate use of the washroom

To reinforce and celebrate our students and their positive behaviour we present:

*PURPLE SLIPS

Handed out daily with a random draw for prizes

*B●SHARP AWARDS Award/per class

“STUDENT OF THE MONTH” certificates Presented at the monthly Celebration Assemblies for best demonstrations of our B·SHARP values!

* Prizes are presented weekly for these students

Civic Holiday

School office is open this week. Individually we are special; together we are spectacular.

Plum Tree Park's School Council Welcome everyone to the 2010/2011 year at Plum Tree Park Public School. To the many new families who are joining us for the first time – a special welcome!

Plum Tree Park School Council consists mainly of parent volunteers and our mission is to help students be the best they can be through parental and community involvement and strong communication between the school and parents.

As quoted in the March 2005 Parent Voice in Education Project (PVEP) Report, “Research shows that children do better in school when parents are involved in their education.” Positive parental involvement in many forms is beneficial to our students. Volunteer to be on your school council, in your child’s classroom or on school trips.

Parent Council fundraising activities are a large source of funds to the school and contribute positively to the educa-tional success of the student population. The Plum Tree Park School Council funds and subsidizes many great programs that all of our students enjoy and learn from throughout the year. We do this through several fundraising events: A $25.00/child, tax deductible donation (Sept 2010) and Magazine Subscriptions (ongoing).

We count on these two popular events to help us continue to support the enriching activities that the Plum Tree Park School community has come to count on and enjoy, such as supporting literacy, offering music and Dr. B science programs, subsidizing bussing for school trips, ice skating and much more. We are counting on you to help us continue to support your children.

We are always grateful for parent input or feedback about any of our undertakings. Email us at: [email protected] or check out our website: http://schools.peelschools.org/1565. Contact us or attend our School Council meetings on the last Thursday of the month starting at 6:30 pm on:

VOLUNTEERS At Plum Tree Park we are fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers to assist the staff and students. This creates a fabulous community relationship. We are extremely proud of the support. Assistance and support from the volunteers are welcome in many areas such as the classrooms, library, office, field trips, sporting events, and fundraisers. The talents and time that volunteers provide to Plum Tree are quite valuable to staff and students.

As of September 2002, every volunteer (as well as all staff) who work with Plum Tree children must have a Criminal Reference Check (C.R.C.) completed (Safe Schools Act). Forms are available at the office. The application must be taken to Peel Police Headquarters in person. You must present three pieces of identification. You will receive the approval form by mail. Once you have received the approval please submit the original, in person (where possible), to Lisa Cruickshank, Peel District School board, 5650 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, L5R 1C6, within 6 months. For any question please call 905-890-1010 ext. 2488. The cost is covered by the Peel Police Department.

Note: Parents cannot go on trips, drive students, help with skating etc. unless you have a Criminal Reference Check approved with the Peel District School Board. There is no cost to you to get a CRC for volunteer purposes.

If you are interested in learning more about these programs or have questions about volunteering, please contact our Vice Principal, Ms. Tracy Tait.
