Information

Careers Fair – Thursday 28 November 2019, 7pm to 8:30pm This will be our eighth annual Careers Fair and is open to students in Years 7 – 13 of Harrogate Grammar School together with their parents/carers. We typically have around 80 employer/business stands attending the event and over 500 students

and parents who have come each year. This demonstrates how much we as a school and students appreciate those who can support for our event. We aim to offer students the opportunity to explore a wide range of career paths and support them in their decision-making through individual advice and guidance.

Could you help?

Just a couple of hours of your time could help our current students make informed decisions about their future, by encouraging them to seek out information regarding courses and career paths that interest them! We have had a number of parents, local businesses and former HGS alumni who have enjoyed supporting this event in the past and it has been greatly appreciated by our students. If you feel you

are able to share your knowledge and expertise at the Careers Fair, either as an individual talking about your profession or by representing a business or company, then please contact: Mrs Hinkins Personal Development Coordinator and Careers Leader tel: (01423) 531127 – ext 241 or email: [email protected]

HOPEWALK 2019: 10am on Sunday 20 October at Swinsty reservoir. HOPEWALK is a month of walks taking place across the UK in

October in support of Papyrus – a national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. Harrogate Grammar School would like to invite families from the wider community to participate in a HOPEWALK in memory of Dom Sowa who Harrogate Grammar School sadly lost in 2017. HOPEWALK will take place on Sunday 20 October at 10am at Swinsty Reservoir. The route to be

followed is indicated on the map, accessed through the link below, the starting point is in the car park at point 1. https://www.yorkshirewater.com/sites/default/files/downloads/Swinsty.pdf This is not intended as a fundraising event, but an act of solidarity to continue to raise awareness as a school. Should families like to make a donation then please do so at:

Student Senate 2019-20

Congratulations to the students below on being selected to represent their year group at Senate this year. Senate meets four times a year

and the agenda for each meeting is largely set by each of the Year Councils. At each Year Council meeting items are selected to take to Senate for a wider discussion. The meeting is chaired by members of the Student Leadership Team who also present the minutes from the meeting to the Headteacher and Senior Leaders. This helps ensure that prompt action is taken on any urgent matters and that all ideas and suggestions are seriously considered.

The first Senate meeting of the year takes place on Monday 7th October during Big Picture. We will also have the honour of welcoming the Major of Harrogate to our second meeting later this term.

Big Picture Day – Thursday 17 October All students in Years 7-11 will have the opportunity to

participate in an exciting Big Picture Day on Thursday 17 October. Students will be off timetable working in their year groups to experience and take part in a range of activities planned to support their Big Picture personal development programme which encourages students to learn about and

discuss issues linked to personal wellbeing and healthy lifestyles, careers education and economic wellbeing, citizenship education and British values. The day is also designed to encourage students to reflect on our school values and develop their skills of respect, excellence, adventure, commitment and honesty (REACH). Information about the different activities planned for each year group is provided below and students will receive further information before the day from form tutors and via emails. We look forward to working with all students on Thursday 17 October and hope they enjoy their Big Picture Day. (Mrs Hinkins)

Year Information

7 An exciting introduction and exploration of Chinese language and culture

Students will get a chance to sample a variety of different Chinese-themed activities, varying from Chinese

cooking, where students can design and make their own spring rolls, to Chinese art (students will study the

work of contemporary artist Ai Wei Wei and produce a group installation), make their own personalised

chopsticks, mask-making and music, Wing Chun Kung Fu, and Mandarin Chinese lessons. The combination

should give them an excellent initial insight into a new, fascinating culture.

8 Science – Healthy Lifestyles

Students will be looking at the effects of smoking and drugs on the body and the effect of exercise. This

will be done through a mixture of practical and theory work.

9 Risky World Students will be learning all about an amazing charity, ShelterBox which helps in

transforming the lives of families robbed of shelter when disaster strikes.

Year 9 groups will have the opportunity to experience first-hand, the decisions and

dilemmas faced by charity workers and millions of families struggling to keep themselves

warm, dry and safe in the event of a natural disaster. A representative from ShelterBox will be on hand to let us know about how

HGS students in recent years have helped the charity and they will be challenged to make their own shelter, using materials that

they have earned. Waterproofs will be required, whatever the weather!!!

In addition, they will be feeding their thirst for adventure by participating in a climbing session at The Harrogate Climbing

centre. Instructors will show them the correct techniques used by the professionals in what promises to be an activity full of fun

and exercise.

10 Period 1 to 4 – Maths

Students will be given the opportunity to develop and improve their understanding of money and finances, giving

them greater knowledge and confidence on these matters. On the day, the students will be tackling the cost of living,

the different types of investment, probabilities and associated with gambling and taking risks.

Period 5 and 6 - English

Introduction to “Romeo and Juliet”, plus how to use GCSE Pod to support learning and revision.

Students need to bring their headphones and iPads.

11 Progression Opportunities and Future Careers In this session students will:

• Explore different progression opportunities and possible careers for the future • Have the opportunity to develop skills and competencies across a wide range of work settings

• Will be working in small groups participating in timed meetings with a range of employers from different job

sectors to “fact find” about their job, company and personal ambitions.

• Students are able to come in “business dress” on the day and information about this will be emailed to

students

Life @ HGS

Thank you Thank you to all the students who volunteered to help out at one or both of the open evenings.

Fantastic ambassadors for the school.

HGS Equestrian Team success In a very busy, and exceptionally wet day at Bishop Burton last Sunday the HGS jumping with style team did themselves proud.

This unusual competition not only requires riders to jump clear over tricky and twisting tracks, but also gives them marks for the effectiveness of their riding and correct position over the jumps. The students were delighted to win the first class, qualifying for the National Championships, and to

come fourth in the second, qualifying for the plate

championships. Well done to Beth Harrison, Megan Harrison, Becky Weston and Layla Brown.

Macmillan Bake Sales

Thank you to everyone who donated and baked cakes last Friday, we raised an impressive £565!

Andrew Lane is the author of the Young

Sherlock Holmes series of young adult

novels, starting with Death Cloud. He has

also written numerous spin-off novels based

on the BBC sci-fi television series Doctor

Who, as well as definitive guides to Babylon

5 and the Wallace and Gromit films, and is

the author of The Bond Files: An Unofficial

Guide to the World's Greatest Secret Agent.

The year is 1868, and Sherlock

Holmes is fourteen. His life is that of a

perfectly ordinary army officer's son:

boarding school, good manners, a

classical education - the backbone of

the British Empire. But all that is

about to change. With his father

suddenly posted to India, and his

mother mysteriously 'unwell',

Sherlock is sent to stay with his

eccentric uncle and aunt in their vast

house in Hampshire. So begins a

summer that leads Sherlock to

uncover his first murder, a kidnap,

corruption and a brilliantly sinister

villain.

Andrew Lanes new spy

series is also available to

borrow. If you like Alex

Rider you will enjoy this

series.

This time, Sam is having recurring dreams about the Titanic . . . where she's been walking the deck with first-class passengers, like her aunt and uncle. Meanwhile, in Sam's waking life, strange missives from the Titanic have been finding their way to her, along with haunting visions of people who went down with the ship.

thirteenth year. Twelve boys have been killed so far. Coron,

the crazy cult leader, will stop at nothing to bring in his new

kingdom. And now he is planning a bombing spectacular

across London to celebrate the sacrifice of his final victim:

Adam.
