Challenge Ladder Competition in Languages

The MFL department have been challenging students to broaden their understanding of language and culture outside the classroom. As part of their weekly homework, students explore ‘Words of the Week’ by completing a series of challenges, which increase in difficulty as they ‘climb the challenge ladder’! Each week we celebrate the students who have produced the best challenge project. Well done to last week’s Challenge Ladder Champions for their fantastic effort! Keep up the hard work!

Last Wednesday Kitt Bird from Oxfam came into speak to a selec-tion of Gifted and Talented Year 9 and 10 Geographers about Cli-mate Change. Mr Bird explained the importance of protecting the poorest and most vulnerable populations from the effects of cli-mate change, whilst highlighting the ability of the richest nations to weather the storm ahead. The disparities between rich and poor demonstrate that whilst High Income Countries exacerbate climate change, they will be more resilient to change. Conversely and more cruelly, Low Income Countries will be less able to with-stand external shocks and thus need help from their polluting counterparts. An interesting discussion ensued and Year 9 and 10 raised some intelligent questions about carbon footprints and how to mitigate against these alarming impacts.

Year 9 Barnet football cup final

The success of the year 9 team this year has culminated in them reaching the Barnet cup final which was played on Monday evening at the old boys ground of the Old Finchleians. Having been unbeaten in Bar-net matches this season the team arrived full of confidence. This confidence was fully justified when after 5 minutes of the game Raheem Conte scored direct from a free kick from just outside the opponent’s penalty area. Christ’s College continued to dominate posses-sion but were caught by the pace and strength of Ashmole’s centre forward, who burst through to score 20 minutes in. Although we continued to probe there was no way through the Ashmole back line and we were again undone just before half time when the same player who scored the first goal broke away again to give Ashmole the lead. CCF reorganised a little bit in the second half and Andri Bebja man marked the threat of their centre forward. Again CCF dominated possession but could not find a clear route to goal. Despite numer-ous half chances we could not find the elusive equaliser and found ourselves rather unfortunate to lose 2-1 . The season however is not over as the team play Finchley Catholic in the league semi – final next week. We wish them luck in that game and hope for another final appearance.

Year 7 Football Barnet League Quarter Final

CCF 5 – 2 Wren Academy (Weekes 3, Shiham, Brandon)

Year 7 capitalised on a fine start to book a place in the Barnet League Semi-Finals. Within 20 minutes a 4 – 0 lead was established thanks to a close-range effort from Tyrone Shiham and three superb finish-es from Kuell Weekes including a fine chip and a blistering volley. With Louie Brandon controlling mid-field and the defensive partnership of Nathan Kaninda and John Paloka shutting the door on Wren’s best attacks, CCF looked in complete control. Wren pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time to make it 4 – 1 at the interval. A quiet second half saw both teams score a goal each including a solo effort from Louie Brandon, which saw him skip past four defenders and coolly slot home. Emre Tas put in a good all-round perfor-mance in midfield to support man-of-the-match, Louie Brandon. Year 7 now await the draw for the semi-finals full of confidence. Team: Ernest Barnes, John Paloka, Nathan Kaninda, Emre Tas, Louie Brandon, Dev Depala, Tyrone Shiham, Sore Adegbite, Kuell Weekes Subs (all used): Lee Reynolds, Sean John, Ibrahim Atlinkaya, Daniel Gyimah

Man of the Match: Louie Brandon

CCF’s troupe of budding actors watch The Taming of The Shrew Over the last two weeks year nine English classes have visited Shakespeare's Globe theatre on London Southbank to see a production of the Taming of the Shrew. For one class this coincided with international women's day and our pupils were able to engage with the discussions about stereotypes and perspectives of women in the 21st Century. This was a fantastic experience for pupils; not only to see a live performance of Shakespeare, but also to enjoy the play in the place where Shakespeare designed his plays to be performed. Thankfully the rain also held off, so we were able to fully enjoy the open air theatre.

Ready, Steady, Cook! This week our Year 8 food students were given the opportunity to cook any recipe of their choice. The impressive dishes cooked and featured below are the results of their efforts and display a commendable diversity of cultural food. Our students are to be applauded for their efforts and they certainly enjoyed the whole experience. Next week it will be a master class in the art of washing up. Design & Technology - Food

Year 10 Basketball

Barnet League Final

St James Catholic High 39 – 44 CCF Year 10 produced an epic second half performance to win the League Final from a seemingly impossible position. It was the last time the Year 10 will play together as a year group as the boys move into Senior basketball next year. As the last game of a 4 year journey it was a memorable afternoon for our boys. Year 10 trailed throughout after a tepid first half performance that saw St James race into the lead and at one stage lead by a massive 21 points. Ibrahim Sesay did his best to halt St James’s progress in the first half and Junaid Khan kept the scoreline respectable with some good close range shooting. Year 10 came out fighting for pride in the second half and nine unanswered points got us within sight of St James however we never looked likely to catch up. As the scoreline evened up belief started to flood through Year 10 and inspired shooting from Peter Swaniker, Saam Nezam Pour, Justin Magtibay and Zak Alim turned a huge deficit into a five point victory in the blink of an eye. At the final whistle the boys were elated after the most unlikely comeback became reality. A truly remark-able second half fightback
