Gates 1 Laura Gates Professor Veena Raman CAS 137H November 4, 2014 Friedrich Nietzsche and Philosophy in the 20th century Friedrich Nietzsche, a German philosopher born in 1844, had a lot of opinions and perspectives that at the time seemed very unpopular . He wrote multiple texts that touched on topics like religion, 1 morality, culture, philosophy, and science, and was often criticized for the ideas he suggested about them. In fact, his work didn’t seem to gain much popularity until after his death in 1900. For decades, religious and political groups alike have used and found inspiration in his writing. In his one particular book, The Gay Science , published in 1882, he used one phrase that completely changed society’s point of view on religion: “God is Dead.” There have been numerous analyses of the meaning behind the phrase, but regardless it has become one of the most influential ideas in contemporary religious thought. This expression set in motion a paradigm shift that had both positive and negative effects on our society, but nevertheless opened our eyes to new perspectives on religion. Paradigm shifts often don’t take shape unless there is a need for one. They are fueled and inspired by an agent for change, whose ideas may seem radical but suggest an improved way of thinking or living. Friedrich Nietzsche, as mentioned before, was one of these people. In the case of this particular paradigm shift, there was definitely a window of opportunity for his ideas. The quote: “For Nietzscheans, their leader doesn’t have to resolve paradox and conflict. Instead, he must only raise doubts, manifest contingency, and cast suspicion on mainstream ideas. To fascinate, provoke, fragment, and deconstruct become the core of the ‘philosopher of the future’ the philosopher as performative 1 Wilkerson, Dale. "Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900)."
