Paper Industry –Goods Service Centre in Siebenlehn.

Just how innovative concepts for the paper indus-

try are implemented in practice, is illustrated by the

NOSTA Group‘s Service Center in Siebenlehn, Saxony.

“We have been working with our renowned major custo-

mer since 1990 and have actively supported structu-

ral change as a logistics partner,” says Andreas Wolke-

Hanenkamp, Managing Director NOSTA Logistics GmbH.

Digital photography in particularl has given rise to major

changes for this customer. Production of photographic paper

has declined, while the demand for inkjet and decorative pa-

per has increased. Furthermore, the paper industry has been

confronted with rapid product development in all market

segments and the highest quality requirements. „In addition

to the huge rolls of paper, our customer’s customers also

began to demand a wide range of quality paper often in

smaller batches,” he confirmed the market trend. Different

types of paper in thicknesses of 60 to 310 grams are

required as a matter of course today. Wolke-Hanenkamp:

„High-volume business with standard goods is definitely a

thing of the past.“

As a result, the necessary changes in the production struc-

ture have led to adjustments in procurement and logistics.

Consulting Services for Industry Solutions

“Together with our major customer, we have de-

veloped a customised logistics concept over a long pe-

riod of time,” says Wolke-Hanenkamp. The production

plant was completely emptied in order to create new

expansion possibilities for the new manufacturing process.

“The added value lies in the production of paper and this

is the main focus,” he explains. In short: Paper producers

focus on their core business, which is producing high

quality paper. The secondary processes and logistics are left

to their partners, who have the requisite industry know-how.

For example, this customer’s management entrusted the

NOSTA Group with the construction and operation of a lo-

gistics centre adjacent the motorway. After only six months

of construction, the Goods Service Centre was completed

in 2008.

Central Warehouse with Sate of the Art Equipment

The logistics process was optimised significantly by cre-

ating a central warehouse with state-of-the-art equip-

ment and an IT-based warehouse management sys-

tem. There are about 3,600 different items in stock in

the Goods Service Centre, which are handled with cha-

otic warehousing. The NOSTA Group maintains the

connection to the factory in two shifts using shuttles.

The full-service logistics provider transports the half-

finished products, raw materials and other goods to the plant,

as requested, with own vehicles just in time and brings finished

products to the logistics centre. A complete load, a partial

load or even just a few pallets goes out with each transport

unit according to the order picking instructions. In

addition, the NOSTA Group serves the customers with con-

tainers by sea and, if necessary, also by airfreight. Sounds

easy, but it is not. The paper industry expects logistics part-

ners who quickly adapt to new framework conditions and

present viable solutions.

Flexibility is Trump

As a matter of principle, in paper logistics, as in other sectors

of the economy, clear understandings and detailed service

agreements form the basis of sustainable, successful coope-

ration. „The logistics specialist must know what paper qualities

are packed and loaded, which documents and customs

papers are required and what acceptance procedures

have been agreed with the customer,“ Wolke-Hanenkamp

emphasises. Things get really exciting when there are short-

term changes in production planning and dispatch orders.

There are enough reasons for that: sort-term changes are

often necessary for overseas transports as other plants can

not accept raw goods due to production or the customer’s

production planning simply changes. “The logistics partner

then has to find fast solutions, irrespective of how far the

planning for the transports has already progressed.”

Customs Processing Know-how Expertise is walso crucial for customs processing. For

example, deliveries to states with preferential agreements

are complex. If a pre-product is manufactured within the EU

and is shipped to a third country with which there is a preferential

agreement, then the third country does not have to pay duty.

Such third countries are, for example, Israel or Mexico. „We

have the know-how and reliable personnel for handling

these transports, who are well versed in the international

customs regulations”, explains Wolke-Hanenkamp.

Value-Added Services

But that is not all, the NOSTA Group has also distinguished

itself with value added services in the paper industry. “In the

goods services centre, we pack inkjet paper in various sizes

by hand for our customers. We also operate a semi-auto-

matic packaging line for inkjet paper, which is sold under

major brand names,” concludes Wolke-Hanenkamp, who is

justifiably proud of the range of services and dedication of

the team in the goods service centre.
