PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The 2015/2016 season has again seemed to have gone by quickly; it has been a pleasing time both on and off the field for the club once again as our teams continue to strive for results and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with playing for Papatoetoe.

Once again our clubs day to day running has been handled well by our Club Manager Simon Poole (Life Member), his passion and commitment to Papatoetoe Cricket is second to none. Again Simon’s dogged approach to registration and the subsequent subscription collection enables us as a club to function on a day to day basis as we strive to provide for our members and players.

Garry Wood our Director of Coaching and Development has once again excelled in this area and the results and accolades we have received both from Auckland Cricket, local schools and parents alike are a result of his commitment, dedication and hard work. Turning this coaching into playing members continues to be a challenge that we face as we need to continue to grow our membership, especially in the junior areas to continue to meet the required teams and numbers that enables to hold our Premier status club position with Auckland Cricket and the funding that comes with that. Garry’s continued work and commitment to helping with our running of the club especially around policy procedures and structure I greatly appreciate.

The work and guidance provided by Gary Troup is unbelievable, his work in obtaining that all important funding that we are constantly seeking, helping in the day to day running of the club along with his passion for all things Papatoetoe makes him a great man to have on our side and it was wonderful to see Gary get the recognition he so richly deserves in the recent Queen’s Birthday Honors for his service to sport and the wider community. Once again he has done our club proud.

The work of these mentioned gentlemen along with Megan’s continued help in funding applications makes the running of our club and the Chairman’s role a pleasure to be involved in.

The Choose Sport Intuitive has once again been a positive iniative for our club and I thank Justin, his staff and the board of Kolmar for their support.

Like all organizations we continue to have to rely on funding for various aspects of the running of our club and this avenue continues to be a major source of revenue. To all of our sponsors and Charitable trusts and especially Auckland Cricket who continue to support us, thank you so much.

Moving forward it would be unwise of us as a club to think we can continue to think we can rely on continued funding and grants from Charitable Trusts, so on going planning and good management is imperative moving forward and we believe our budget for the coming year reflects this, and we as an Executive believe we need to fully review and evaluate our costs in all areas of our club.

Results on the playing field were once again encouraging, and no doubt will be mentioned in greater detail in various reports, but I must comment on the outstanding achievement of Ollie Pringle in scoring 200* in a Premier game this year, an outstanding achievement. Ollie was rewarded at The Papatoetoe Sports Awards for Outstanding Club Performance, well done and congratulations.

Page 20: PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT · Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2015/2016 5. Election of officers for the 2016-2017 Season 6. General

This year saw Bhupinder Singh take on the role as Premier coach. Bhups along with his support staff put in place a structure involving the Senior club that was well received by the players and our feedback has been very positive. Whilst the success of the season may not have lived up to these expectations the spirit and commitment of Stephen and his players was outstanding and their conduct on the field throughout one particular adverse occasion did our club proud.

Success is measured by results though and it is disappointing to not see our club in Finals contention, hopefully we can rectify this, it has been too long for a club of our size with the resources we have and commit too, to continue to be happy to be 5th or 6th. Papatoetoe needs to be back at the top and a dominant force in Auckland Cricket once again.

To all our volunteers, coaches managers , supporters and parents thank you all very much, but we still require more of you. I encourage you all to get involved in your club in the upcoming season and beyond, we all need to help out be in large or small contributions so our club continues to perform and function efficiently

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It does not seem like a year has passed since I last wrote this report. In the past 12 months we have witnessed many wonderful sporting achievements both in cricket and other sports. The All Blacks became the only team in history to achieve back to back World Cups. Brendan McCullum brought the curtain down on a career that thrilled, polarised and bewildered, however at the end of it all he left the national scene on his own terms and in his own style. Now with cricket over we await the Olympics and all the passion and National pride associated. As a Cricket Club we have fared well on the field. Our Premiers retained their position in the top tier of Auckland cricket. The team are a young yet settled side and becoming more aware of what it takes to win games. My congratulations to Stephen Money for his determination and grit- as the season went on you led from the front and provided many with much hope for the future.

VJ Soma, a club man of many years again led the Reserves into battle each weekend. His pride in the Red Cap is an inspiration to all of us who have had the privilege to know him or take the field with him for what seems like forever. Thanks VJ -you are very much appreciated. The young men in your care are learning and putting pressure on those at the next level. My sincere thanks to Rajeev Rajagopal, Kevin Henderson and Mandeep Singh who captained their respective grade teams to top three finishes. To all the players in all teams I congratulate you on your efforts this year. I look forward to getting around the games next year and watching you play this great game. I would like thank all those who coached a team this year from Premiers down to our Junior grades, as a club we could not function without you.The Committee under Peter Boyd have led us admirably off the field. Committee work is very much unsung and at times frustrating. I thank you all on behalf of all club members for your time, expertise and commitment to Papatoetoe Cricket. We certainly have challenges ahead but I am comfortable in the knowledge that going forward we have very good people guiding us. Thanks to Simon Poole who keeps us going every Saturday and through the week. Keep it up Pooley. To all our life members thank you for your support throughout the year. It is great to see so many of you supporting our young men and women on Saturdays. The special functions that we hold to acknowledge your service are always keenly awaited. The stories get better, the memory perhaps a little hazy but the company always good. I urge young players in the club to seek out these men and talk about your game, they are a font of knowledge and may give you that tip that makes a good season great. I will point these blokes out if you need a hand. Finally I would like to wish all club members a warm winter. I look forward to seeing you all again come October.

Nigel Hurst President

CLUB MANAGER’S REPORT

Much was expected of the 2015/6 Cricket season for Papatoetoe Cricket. Whilst some of the season’s goals were achieved there is still much hard work to be done for our Club to return to the forefront of Auckland Cricket. Overall, I see my Club Manager role more as a facilitator-getting teams on the park each weekend, ensuring they have access to Coaching and quality equipment as required to give them the best opportunity to succeed.

Whilst our Premier side finished 6th in the Hedley Howarth Trophy and thus retained their Premier Top Eight Status for another season, there is still much more to be done for the side to challenge for a Top 4 spot in following seasons. Notable performances from Ollie Pringle-the first Papatoetoe Premier player to score 1000 runs in a season is a remarkable achievement. Ollie won Club Performer of the Year at the recent Papatoetoe Sports Awards dinner. Stephen Money captained the side with a steely determination that other players need to emulate and was resolute and defiant with the bat. First year coach Bhupinder Singh led the side well and hopes to deliver better performances next season.

The Reserves-after winning their Championship last season ended mid-table this season and far to say struggled to repeat. The talent is there but inconsistency let them down at vital times as they competed in all matches they played. After gaining promotion from B2, our B1 side under Rajeev Rajagopal failed by a mere 1.6 points to win this grade and gain promotion to Senior A. This side is a nursery for our future Premier players and an important stepping stone in their progress. Both B3 under Kevin Henderson and C1 under Mandeep Singh had successful seasons-third and second respectively.

We had 5 One Day sides this season. These sides were basically self-sufficient and are a pleasure to deal with. I hope they will continue to remain part of our Club for many years to come. Final results were-

One Day 1B Punjabi Raiders - 5th One Day 2a Kings XI - 2nd One Day 2B Punjabi XI - 5th One Day 3A All Stars - 2nd One Day 4B Te Ulu - 10th

One area of major concern for the Club is the dwindling number of Junior Teams at Papatoetoe. As part of ACA requirements for ‘Premier Club’ status each Club must have at least 10 Junior teams-we are right on the threshold. On a brighter note there were some notable performances-

6A under Mark Rawnsley winning their Championship and beating the only team that beat them in the Final

the last hurdle

Page 23: PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT · Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2015/2016 5. Election of officers for the 2016-2017 Season 6. General

There are many people to thank in the Junior Grades but to name a couple -

start of the season with little or no cricketing knowledge and with patience and understanding developing a side that by seasons’ end was very competitive

of the future

to up skill our top Juniors.

To all other Junior Coaches, scorers and supporters- a big thank you-every Club needs your continual support to function effectively.

Thank you also to our Committee for all the help in the past season. You all make a wonderful contribution to our favourite Club as we battle with the more mundane off field factors that need to be sorted to allow our players to do what they love doing-playing Cricket. Hoping for even greater success next year.

COACHING DIRECTOR’S DEVELOPENT REPORT 2015/2016

The 2015-16 season was a busy season as the Club continued its efforts to drive up the interest and participation levels through a comprehensive schools program that ranks with the best in the country. Once again we received significant funding through the Kiwi

Sport fund distributed by Counties Manukau Sport that meant the program could be taken out into the schools to over 4000 local students who benefited with a rewarding and fun cricket experience.

As usual this meant the Papatoetoe Club was delivering cricket to a huge range of diverse ethnic backgrounds. At the Mission Heights DEEP session for Girls these included Indian, Chinese, Arab, Filipino, Maori and Pakeha pupils. Our challenge as always is how to promote and shape those sessions as a fun and stimulating session so that cricket will become the sport of choice for their generation.

In raw development figures Papatoetoe Club provided in excess of 12,000 coaching opportunities in various local schools. These ranged from foundations skills for younger students to squad coaching for cluster group field days which are always competitive. The coaching staff was also active in collaborating with other providers in a number of community initiatives including the CM Sport Girls only day, the NZ Players Association Hooked on Cricket and the ACA QuikHit. Perhaps the biggest impact was seen in the second year of the ACA Blitz where a third of all the teams across the Auckland region were from the clubs catchment area and where Papatoetoe Coaches had been providing coaches in various school based programmes. The Club was also a principle contributor to the CM Sport Have A Go Day held in 10 local Primary schools.

New schools where the Club delivered multiple sessions included Al Madinah, East Tamaki Primary, McCauley High School, Rongomai Primary and Yendarra Primary. Business as usual was at Bairds, Holy Cross, Kedgely, Puhinui, Papatoetoe South and West. De la Salle showed a resurgence of interest in cricket, no doubt due to the support of Nigel Hurst and new staff member and Papatoetoe parent and coach Ulu Hakeagatoa.

Women’s and Girls’ cricket is viewed by the Committee as a very real opportunity in terms of growth for the Club. The Club again fielded a Premier Ladies side who, although boosted by the arrival of a new player/coach and a wicketkeeper from Waitakere didn’t finish any better off than last season. However there were some notable personal performances, some good bowling efforts and one outstanding day when the team managed to produce 339/9 against Eden Roskill.

Page 25: PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT · Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2015/2016 5. Election of officers for the 2016-2017 Season 6. General

The most important thing is that there are now quite a few younger girls playing either in the under 12 team or in the boys grades. That bodes well for upcoming seasons as the Club seeks to translate the numbers in schools into active club participation at both junior and senior levels.

One significant bonus from the season was the emergence of more young coaches. Once again we had overseas staff with a young Englishman, Jack Dixon, playing an active part in the schools. Dave Hooper also returned from the previous year. Sam Robinson was also a big contributor early on. In addition Hetu Shah, Luke Istead, Alex Hakeagatoa and Tetiare Mataora helped with the Blitz games and Friday evening juniors.

The Club is due to review and update our existing strategic plan. Peering into the crystal ball it seems timely to work with Auckland Cricket and focus on the Flatbush area. Ministry of Education projections show that the school aged population will be more than 5000 students in the near future. One new school is planned in and around that vicinity for the next five years. Many of them will come from cricket families and communities. It makes sense to plan for the Club to be in a position to take advantage of that huge growth cycle. If we do our work well there should be the opportunity for the Club to become a real force across all levels of the code in the southern regions.

PREMIER COACHES REPORT

Reflecting on my first season in charge of the Men’s Premier Squad at Papatoetoe Cricket has been one of great learning. It was an honour to be given the opportunity to work with and develop the next generation of cricketers at my club.

I couldn’t have done this without the tremendous support of a number of people. Thank you to John Lee for once again managing the Premier team this season. John has become an integral part of our team. Thanks to Brett Paterson for taking up the scoring duties again this year. Thank you to Neil Ronaldson for his guidance with players and his role as selector for the Premier and Reserve squads. Thanks to Vijay Soma and his on-going role as Reserves coach. Vijay continues to set the standard for what is expected of a player at Papatoetoe Cricket with his determination to put the needs of the club above his own. Thank you to the committee- Gary Troup, Peter Boyd, Simon Poole and Gary Wood for your on going support throughout the season. I would like to personally thank all past players who gave up their time to support the club this season. The presence of you around the grounds has a significant impact on the team and continues the great history and family culture of the club.

Setting goals is an important element leading up to every season. As a coach it is naive to believe winning three championships in my first season was attainable. For me this is the ultimate objective but a goal that has to be worked towards. Setting realistic goals this year was important and would provide a great stepping stone towards success in the future. The goals I set for this season were less centred on performance and more focused on the culture and work ethic of the Premier squad. It was important for me to raise the standard at training and us becoming fitter as a group. Focusing on the togetherness of the two squads was important and getting everyone working towards the same goals. Raising expectations on arriving on time and doing the extra work which is required to put the team ahead.

Evaluating our season I believe we have made strides in a number of these areas. We were a fitter team this year with a greater emphasis on fitness in pre-season. This resulted in bowlers being able to bowl longer spells, batsman applying themselves longer at the crease and greater concentration in the field. We will need to continue to improve in this area if we wish to be a successful team in the following seasons. Player’s unrealistic expectations of what it takes to be a Premier player was the greatest challenge that we as a selection committee faced this season. As a player, it is a simple game. If you put consistent performances on the board you will warrant selection. In the current culture there is a trend towards players pointing fingers at others rather than looking at their own performances. The players need to understand you need to be dominating in the level you are playing if you wish to be successful at the next. Saying he’s not performing isn’t a justification for selection at any level. This is an area I will look to address next season as it is essential in maintaining the strong culture within the group. One area we haven’t progressed as a team to a level that I expect this season is in players attitudes towards training. Results reflect work ethic, and our inconsistent performances this year are a direct outcome of varying efforts at training. This begins with making it to training on time, working hard and then doing the extra work which will benefit the team.

As a squad we maintained our status in the Major championship finishing 6th overall. In the One Day competition we finished 4th in our group with three wins out of seven. In the Twenty20 competition we were knocked out in the quarter finals by North Shore the eventual winners after topping our qualifying group. If we can use this results as a starting point and continue to improve in the areas that I have raised above, we will eventually challenge for titles.

Page 27: PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT · Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2015/2016 5. Election of officers for the 2016-2017 Season 6. General

There were some outstanding performances this season. To start Ollie Pringle was a standout scoring over a thousand runs, including a double hundred and a hundred. Moving up to bat four this season Ollie showed a great level of maturity and lead through example and was the catalyst for most of our large totals that we posted this season. Ollie was well supported by Stephen Money who averaged just under forty this season. Stephen allowed others to bat well around him playing the supporting role in the middle order. Another standout was Jamie Hayes who moved up the order to bat three this season. Jamie was very consistent and did a great job building a platform for the rest of the team.

In the bowling department Navdeep Aujula was again the top wicket-taker in the Premier side with 41 wickets. Navdeep bowled extremely well and was the key to a number of victories throughout the season. Navdeep was backed up well by opening bowler Abishek Patel. Abishek emerged into a consistent performer for the side this year and could be always counted on to put pressure on at the top of the innings. Although his stats may not look that impressive the pressure that he build for his team mates was the key to a lot of the success that the bowling unit had. Injuries to key seamers Luke Istead and Ollie Pringle this season allowed for a number of players to get an opportunity and create depth in our bowling ranks. With these two fit next season I believe we will have a potent bowling attack.

Thanks again to all those who have supported the team and I this season. I look forward to seeing everyone again next year and to keep working hard towards titles.

2015/16 PREMIER WOMEN SQUAD

The 2016 season was a bit of a mixed bag. It started with high expectations and hopes. A new coach, Lily Mulivai was appointed and she and Lia Bourne had transferred over from Waitakere to take on leadership roles in the group and also to assist in their preparation for the South Pacific Games with Samoa. The Club continued with the relationship with Samoa Cricket and Lagi Talea returned from the previous year and Taofi Lafai joined her for this season.

There were some very good team and individual performances during the season including a spectacular 339/9 in a One Day game against Eden Roskill. Generally though the batting was unreliable and inconsistent which led to some close games but also some drubbings against good batting opposition. The most reliable batters were Lagi Talea and Mirioni Rivaia were the best with the odd contribution from Lia Bourne, Tetiare Mataora and Lily Mulivai. The bowling was very good at times with one highlight being Lagi’s bowling against newly promoted Howick Pakuranga where she achieved the outstanding figures of 5 wickets for 6 runs. Lily showed her class with regular tight spells of bowling that were well supported by Lagi and Tetiare. Miri was a regular wicket taker and others who contributed occasionally were Maalu and Atina.

Overall the issue was our inability to bat for periods and score runs without taking risks and getting out. Taofi showed some stickability at times as did Miri but few of the rest including some of the senior players didn’t apply themselves often and for long enough. The inability to put pressure on led to the opposition inserting Papatoetoe very regularly and the lack of runs on most occasions did not allow the bowling unit enough runs to bowl to and

Page 30: PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT · Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2015/2016 5. Election of officers for the 2016-2017 Season 6. General

apply run rate pressure. This also showed with the catching and ground fielding which was outstanding at times with Tetiare, Lily, Lagi all generally setting a high standard. However with the small totals often being defended the team did not help itself dropping easy catches at important times and allowing fielding stands to drop right away. Lia was neat and tidy behind the stumps, effecting some good stumpings at times and assisting with several run out opportunities as they presented themselves.

Nickie was her usual effective self in her role as manager and contributed on the field as well including a very good 29 in the penultimate game of the Pritchard Cup

Looking into the future the younger players like Tetiare, Manea, Koitai, Atina and Maalu are now heading into their third year of cricket at this level. They should all be getting an idea as to what it takes to contribute to the team’s performances on a regular and consistent basis. The senior players also need to perform consistently and this comes from reliable training sessions and a bit of hard work. Enough glimpses from the season indicated that the side is not far away from being a very competitive unit. Hopefully that will start in 2016.

PAPATOETOE MEN’S PREMIER RESERVE 2015/16 SEASONAnother season of cricket has passed us and we all wait in anticipation as to what the next one brings the top 3 senior teams at Papatoetoe Cricket. The 2015/2016 season failed to live up to the expectations for the Reserve grade squad which won the 2 day championship last season.

Instead of building on the success of the season previous, I believe we plateaued and let other teams catch us in terms of attitude. I will speak the truth in this report and I hope those who have passed through our Reserve team (and even read these reports) take some note so as to learn from last season and make strides forward this upcoming season. I sincerely believe that the current crop of youngsters at Papatoetoe have the ability to compete with the best teams and players in Auckland, this includes the Premiers, but lack the ability to learn from their failings and be critical on themselves. Mental toughness is something I talk to a lot of young players in the Reserve grade team about, but I am not sure they fully grasp what this is or how to achieve it. For me, and it always been this way, being mentally tough is about taking the knocks, self-analysing, being self-critical and

finding the best way to overcome it. This process must be learnt by our guys so it can be done quickly and in most cases during the Saturday itself. Too many times this season, I witnessed players from the Reserve grade squad, look for excuses, search for reasons to be in certain teams, voice opinions with out really truly asking themselves why and focus on their peers/friends and their short comings. This mind set must change next season, our culture and Bhup’s hard work at Papatoetoe CC depends on it. Both the Reserve grade and Premier squads must understand the concepts of being mentally tougher, encouraging the success of others, being able to take criticism from both “self” and “peers” so to develop as players for the success of our club.

From a playing perspective, season highlights were too few. We had 5 wickets bags from Logan Clark, Shahvir Irani and Karan Anand. With the bat Christie O’Brien made his second senior century at Papatoetoe scoring 150 (NO). Christie has also been selected in the DFA programme with Papatoetoe’s new exciting prospect, Aue Parima, who made the AKL under 17’s. Aue has a bright future, he is naturally talented and made the step up to men’s

Page 33: PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT · Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2015/2016 5. Election of officers for the 2016-2017 Season 6. General

cricket this season scoring 70 on his debut, he will be one to keep an eye out for and joins Christie in the DFA programme during this winter. It is my hope that these two youngsters keep developing and push for Premier spots next season. I must also mention the steady development of Sam Robinson, this youngster was a consistent work horse for me as well as young Mike Greenwood and Brendan Austin. Mike, joined us from Howick and has been great for team culture and showing some leadership with the ball. Brendan as always has been the calm head, looking after the needs of our youngsters and being our “go to” man with the ball.

Finally, special thanks must go to Bhups for looking after and running the senior squad . He must be commended on integrating both teams and also bringing in youngsters like Sukjahp Singh to be involved in men’s cricket. He has started his Head Coach role in trying conditions, but is learning to adapt to our young guys and their way of thinking. I am sure this coming season will bring improved results and have my fingers crossed for a couple of titles to add to the trophy cabinet. Also thanks to the guys in our Reserve grade team for helping me at trainings and on Saturdays, you know who you are, I appreciate the help you all give me.

Till next season, train hard and winter well.

PAPATOETOE B1 REPORT

Two day championship - 3rd Overall championship - 2nd

Team performance:Our target was to win the overall championship but we fell short by a mere 1.88 points. Suburbs won the championship - they had a huge advantage in the grade over other teams by virtue of having two teams in the grade and they manoeuvred their strategy in such a way that their weaker team played a huge part in their stronger team winning the championship.

We played against the weaker Suburbs team in the final two day game needing an outright victory to secure the championship and after taking the first innings lead in the first hour of Day 2, I declared. The stronger Suburbs team were also playing on the same ground. In the second innings Suburbs played a defensive game and kept us in the field for the entire day with their defensive batting, batting for 74 overs for the loss of 7 wickets. The other Suburbs team achieved an outright victory and thereby the championship. It was a disappointing end to an otherwise fantastic season.

We won the one day championship quite comfortably with a big gap between us and the second placed team, but we could not perform in the same way in the two day championship. The reason is that we could not get outright victories against weaker teams and our bowlers did not rise to their potential with the exception of Avnit Prasad who had an excellent season. Our batting performances were excellent with Pratik Patel leading the batting attack. The fielding was also of a good standard except in the last few games of the season where we missed quite a few important chances in the field which had a significant impact in the final outcome.

Player performances: Pratik Patel was the top scorer of the grade and Avnit Prasad was the second highest wicket taker. In the grade. Pratik Lawande had a fantastic season with the bat in the middle order and has improved his stature as a batsman. Hetu Shah, Alex Hakeagatoa, Taine Brookland and Jack Shimmin continue to improve and they need to continue working hard, be patient and the results will follow for them. Aue Parima was the most improved player and he is destined to play at a higher level. Ramandeep Kahlon was dependable as ever in the middle order. Gagandeep Singh and Ketan Patel both had an off season but we all know that they are capable. Dilpreet Singh had a few decent scores at the top order and was also handy as a leg spinner. Paramveer Basra joined us late in the season and was impressive with his line and length. Sanjit Birla was very effective with the new ball in the handful of games that he played for us.

Page 36: PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT · Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2015/2016 5. Election of officers for the 2016-2017 Season 6. General

I would like to thank all the players, Simon Poole, Bhupinder Singh, Vijay Soma and Kevin Henderson for their support. I am also grateful that I was able to select the players that I wanted for the crucial games of the season. The communication between us and the first two teams was much better this year. I would certainly be back next year but would like to limit myself as a player only and would like someone younger to take this team forward to reach even greater heights.

PAPATOETOE B3 White

Our season this time around saw mixed fortunes, with the One Day competition getting off to a slow start, which saw us down the table. In the Two Dayers we fared much better, with B3 being in the hunt right up until the final round.

Our highlights for the season were wins over University and Birkenhead pre-Xmas, and then a trouncing of Hibiscus Coast in the new year, after they had earlier beaten us in the Two-Day round.

Individually, we were well served by the Kahlon brothers who both made centuries in the first half before both moving on. I’d also like to pay special mention to Vishal, who struggled in the early rounds with the ball, but came back strongly finishing with 23 wickets, including 10-for in our final game.

Overall it was a season of some frustrations. We struggled to have a settled side with many forced changes for various reasons. This did have a bearing on our later results.

The younger players will need to step up if we are to build depth in the grade sides.

Till we do it all again … cheers.

Kevin Henderson – B3 Captain

PAPATOETOE TE ULU EMERGING HEARTS

Ke Ola and Greetings

The 2015/16 season has been a great overwhelming challenge for me and the team (Emerging Hearts). We've had a whole range of different players who played for the Emerging Hearts Team

As Captain of this team, I have enjoyed every moment that I have experienced with them.

One of the games that we found memorable was when we played a T20 against Parnell. In the last over, when our bowler Manea Purotu took two wickets as Parnell failed to reach the 10 runs they needed to win. The intensity was high and the supporters thought that Parnell would win but we all had faith in ourselves and tried our best to defeat them, which we did.

To me, it doesn't matter how we play or how good we are. Cricket to us is about playing fair and competing, but most of all to enjoy it. I must say, the whole team hate losing. Once we enter the ground it’s a different zone altogether and that hunger for winning is always there. Team attitude on the field was spot on.

My promise to the team was: "I will always place the Team first, I will never accept defeat, I will never quit, I will never leave a fallen team-mate".

I would like to take this opportunity to thanks our Coach Tetiare who taken her time to train us. Thanks to our supporters who have experienced the journey with us. I would also like to thank the players for their commitment and determination throughout the whole season, without them, we would not have made it this far. Even though we're a team that lacked

in fitness, I’m proud of what we have achieved. I would like to thank our Vice Captain Kai Luka for taking over when I'm on sickness leave. Thank you to Nickie for helping us with our score-books etc. Thank you to Papatoetoe Club and Te Ulu ote Watu Community for your ongoing support. Lastly, thank you to my family for the never ending support.

Thanks once again.

PAPATOETOE TE ULU O TE WATU JUNIOR HEARTS 12A GIRLS

This was a first time for our young Community team who didn’t know anything about playing Cricket. They have come a long way during the season and after playing Saturday to Saturday will be all the better for the experience next year.

Both the Coach and Manager were inspired while watching our Girls grow in the sport, having fun and learning more about the game. The girls ranged in ages from 8 to 12 and most were related to each other in our community Te Ulu O Te Wata.

Week by week the girls encouraged each other during training and looked forward to their matches each Saturday. Each player has different skill sets that helped the team on game day.

Our girls have improved in the following:-

way, using gloves, pads & helmet for safety, and the basic rules of batting.

communicate with each other, walking in with the bowler and how to field the ball.

Page 44: PAPATOETOE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT · Presentation and adoption of Annual Report and Balance Sheet for 2015/2016 5. Election of officers for the 2016-2017 Season 6. General

The girls came in with no knowledge of this sport and from what they learnt - they have gained discipline and respect for each on and off the field. The future plan for this team is to focus on the basic skills – batting, bowling & fielding.

The coach (Paana Purotu) & manager (Kaiti Lulia) would like to acknowledge the Papatoetoe Cricket Club management for giving our young team an opportunity to experience this great game of cricket

PAPATOETOE Year 8 PREMIER

Looking back at the season, it was memorable and a good learning experience for all of us.

During the season we played in the Year 8 Premier Grade. We had a mix of Year 7 and 8 boys. The club provided them with a challenge to play in the Premier Grade. Even though we didn’t win many games we still did gain a lot of confidence and an exposure to real cricket. The boys set themselves up for the challenge.

This year Onkar Singh and myself looked after the team with the help of other parents. Onkar worked very hard with dedication for the boys whilst training and taking responsibility of scoring on match days.

Most players did very well throughout the season, but it’s worth mentioning Harjot Singh for his overall performance, good batting by Tanin Khurana ( Ross), and bowling performance by Samir Anand, whilst Veron Sharma kept very well for the team behind the wickets. Paramdeep Singh, Abhijeet Singh and Tihaan Bergh showed a lot of improvement in their skills throughout the season.

I would like to thank Simon and Bhupinder for their continuous support to the team.

Regards,Munish Anand( Coach )

PAPATOETOE YEAR 7B

The Papatoetoe Year 7B side in spite of a disrupted season did remarkably well to make the Top 4 playoffs at season’s end. Despite playing many games with less than 11 the players showed a remarkable capacity to bond together as a team and overcome difficulties. Well done to the nucleus of the side whom turned up Saturday after Saturday to become a happy confident side.

Special thanks to Gautam Sharma, Ulu Hakeagatoa, Anand Sudhakaran and Harpal Lohi for their help with umpiring, scoring and transport during the season when they were available. Unfortunately too many parents still are strangers to cricket and it is affecting their child’s chances of developing their cricketing skills further. There is a direct correlation between parental support and success on the field.

While I don’t want to single out players there is some real talent in this age group. To develop further you need to work hard at the Winter Programmes, get fitter and your game will go to another level. Good luck next season.

PAPATOETOE YEAR 6A

Our year started a little unorganised to say the least. For our first game versus Cornwall Cachopa we had a make shift team with a mixture of boys and girls that we had not yet trialled. A mix of inexperienced first time and returning players saw a close loss. A disappointing start to the season for all, but the following week we picked the strongest players available and the team was bolstered by four young stars from Fiona’s BMFS team from the previous season. The team went the rest of the preliminary rounds undefeated with all the players, coaches and support crew feeling confident that the skills and talent of the team would see them go far in the Championship grade of 6A. We finished the preliminary rounds with results of;

Played 9: Won 7: Lost 1:Draw (rain) 1: Total runs 1104: Points 22.5: NRR 2.44

With the top 3 Teams of our side of the draw and the top three from the opposite draw in the Championship grade we knew that all the games would be more evenly matched and that no games could be taken lightly. Our first up game vs Cornwall Guptil Bunce started the same way as our preliminary matches, we had a close loss that really gave the team a good wake up call for the rest of our matches. Jana and I used this game result as motivation for the players, when they seemed to be getting a little overconfident, as a reminder that any of the teams could beat us on the day.

We went the rest of the Championship rounds undefeated again with the team displaying a lot of really good character, skill set and most importantly great sportsmanship. The Grand Final ended up being against Cornwall Guptil Bunce at Hamlin Park, and needless to say the boys and girls knew that this was their day for revenge. We won the toss and elected to

field on a dewy morning, Cornwall crumbled to our formidable bowling line up and ending up 82/8 off their allotted overs and feeling a little dejected. Our players were amped up on the prospect of the coach shouting pizza if they won the game finishing the runs off in style scoring 84/3 off 15.2 overs needless to say the players were elated, the coaches quite chuffed, and the supporters proud as punch!

I would like to thank Jana for coaching with me and supporting the team when I couldn’t attend. The support of all the parents and family, without you there would not have been a team. To Simon thanks for all your dedication to the club and help with all of our needs, to the scorers (the Singh family) thank you for scoring tirelessly every game! Finally to my team see you all later this year and thank you for all the hard work you put in, you showed that hard work and having a little fun on the way can make a good team an outstanding team.

WELL DONE!

PAPATOETOE Bairds Mainfreight Year 6

The Papatoetoe/BMPS team had four players who were moved through to the 6a side. This was a great move for the boys, as they were able to take their game to a new level. It made BMPS proud when 6a won the Auckland championship.

This meant that the BMPS team struggled for players and were still trying to find players as the season began. This also meant many extra practices as these players had only ever played kiwi cricket-no hard bat/ball experience at all.

The children worked really hard, and although their skills were basic, they started the season winning their games-carrying on the team’s good reputation.

During the summer break, it became obvious that we were in for a struggle, as we struggled to get anyone to training. We started back school/the season looking for new players, with only players left from the first part of the season.

Not surprisingly, we lost a few games, as the new players didn’t have any skills. They did however commit to the team, came to all of the training sessions, and played their very best at every game. We had great fielding, but pretty weak batting skills.

This hard work and commitment saw the team make it (surprisingly) to the final, where they were beaten by a better, more deserving team. Coming second for us was a great achievement, with so many new players. The team has been fortunate to have Martin Kaipo as the Coach/Umpire. Garry Wood who has helped us have a team at Papatoetoe, and of course the Papatoetoe coaches who have been great value. We wouldn’t have had a team without this support!

Looking ahead:The team will keep a number of its players for next season, and already has students from the school who are eager to train and be part of the 2016/17 team. Training will begin August/September.

One goal is to get more parents involved-helping with transport, scoring, umpiring, etc, so that the team is sustainable when the adult helpers move on when their children leave the BMPS/Papatoetoe team.

Another goal is to work with the y7 students to keep them involved in Papatoetoe Club, and if necessary helping them with subs in the 2016/17 season. We will focus on the three boys who played for the 6a side this season.

PAPATOETOE YEAR 6B

To say “It’s been a tough season” is probably an understatement, but a cliché well used.

The truth is any season for a team sport is a tough season. The value comes from lessons learnt. A cliché I do like is “practice makes perfect”. Regular attendance at both practice and games, assisted in some very satisfying results from both an individual and team perspective. We regularly fielded 11 players and on more than one occasion sportingly loaned opposition teams a player or two.

The boys represented the club in a very competitive spirit and healthy dose of pride. This was illustrated in the “overseas” trip to Waiheke Island, from all accounts a memorable experience for all. Unlike us, many other clubs were unable to muster a team to compete with Waiheke. They were extremely grateful for the effort we made and made the boys and parents feel very welcome.

The aim of any team is to gain momentum and improve as the season progresses, and the fact we won our last three games, one against a team that had previously beaten us, is testimony to the hard work and time invested by the boys.

Finally, a big thankyou to those parents who helped out during the year, especially Jay Tiwari. Volunteers are the life blood of any club, and without them our boys wouldn’t be able to play.

Enjoy the break, and good luck for next season.
