On Earth Day, April 22 close to 50 people attended “Build a Better World with Books” at AASD.

Parents learned how to make a book come to life for their children and the importance of

reading. Nancy Kelly Jones, AASD’s ASL specialist, and fourth grade teacher Samantha Muniz

read Pete the Cat and modeled engaging strategies parents can use at home.

Amanda Lee our librarian taught step by step strategies while reading Pete the Cat.

Families received DVD’s of the story in ASL that included extra features and vocabulary.

Celebrate Reading!

On Friday, April 21, three representatives from the DeKalb Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) came to AASD. They did a demonstration for middle and high school students about various forms of severe weather and how to be prepared for them. Later they handed out

free weather radios, with deaf friendly strobes, to students and deaf staff.

Over 500 students convened at Rock Eagle 4-H camp for the Career Technical Instruction Spring Leadership Competition held April 19-21. This is the third year AASD has brought a group of students for this statewide event. All areas of competition relate to the career pathways. Students cre-ate a product or project, create a notebook, show their work on a display board or in a live event, and be interviewed by a panel of judges. Many hours of practice and preparation were invested and, with hard work, came the awards listed below!

Christopher Morales, 1st place Agricultural Science Tymera Smith 1st place Agricultural Science Santon Barnes 3rd place Catering Table Set-up Isamar Garcia 1st place Computer Applications Chris Battle 3rd place Floraculture

Rafael Montez also won the talent show with his ASL story-- “Prom Night”.

Final projects from the students were displayed in AASD’s gym lobby. Rafael’s winning talent show performance, Pedro’s public speaking event, and the Video Production winning clip were also looped on the lobby TV. The CTAE teachers have set high goals and a high level of instruction for all of the students. Again the students rose to the challenge! Washington A group of AASD students in grades 11 and 12

had a whirlwind tour of Washington D.C. this

month. They toured Gallaudet University, had

lunch in the Gallaudet cafeteria and visited the

Union Station, Lincoln and Vietnam Memorials

and the Washington Monument. They enjoyed

a bus tour of the city, toured the Capitol

and visited the American History,

Air and Space, Holocaust and

African American museums.

Washington DC is a very deaf friendly city.

Students enjoyed seeing other deaf people

everywhere they went.

Teacher chaperones, Johnny Furman, Lara

Metcalf and Andrea Watson are very proud

of the way our students represented AASD

and their eagerness to learn about so many

important American sights.
