Accelerated Reader Recognition Congratulations to the following students for earning

25 Accelrated Reader points so far this year

From the Principal’s Desk

Hello McKinley Families,

We are off to a wonderful start this school year. Thank You to all of you for all you do daily to make our students suc-

cessful. There are many things you can do at home to be involved with your child’s education and help support their suc-

cess.

Good attendance is key! Make sure your child is at school if they are not sick. Try to schedule appointments after school,

so that your child does not miss instructional time. Each day new and important concepts are taught that we don’t want

your child to miss out on. Make sure your child reads daily. This could be reading independently, having an adult or older

sibling read to them or listening to a book on the computer or CD. Last but not least ask about what is happening in

school daily.

Our students have started out the year with some fun activities. The students have begun our Makers space days at

McKinley. Each class will get the opportunity to participate once a trimester. These activities include problem solving, cod-

ing, building and connecting circuit boards, the activities depend on the grade level.

We are excited about a wonderful year filled with many academic and hands on opportunities for your child. Thank you

for partnering with us to make your child’s school year a success.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Costella

McKinley Costume Parade

Greetings McKinley Families: Last month I provided guidance in the class by introducing the Bullying Unit. We learned Lessons on re-fusing bullying and reinforcing the message that bullying does not have to be tolerated and how to en-courage students to report and use assertiveness skills to stand up to bullying. In addition, I introduced Skills for Learning and Empathy & Respect. This month I will continue to provide guidance in the class for Skills for Learning and Empathy & Respect. In Grades TK-3, the Second Step program promotes the development of self-regulation skills and im-proved participation in learning through its focus on Skills for Learning. Focusing attention, listening, us-ing self-talk, and being assertive are skills students must be able to integrate and apply in order to be successful in diverse learning environments. The Second Step program explicitly teaches skills for learning to ensure that students develop the foun-dational self-regulation skills necessary for successful participation in learning. In Grades 4 and 5, the Second Step curriculum reinforces students’ skills for learning by implicitly interweaving their use into all the lessons. Two important skills for learning– listening with attention and being assertive—are used to help develop students’ ability to succeed in school, get along with others, and make and keep friends. Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills that lead to success in school and in life.

Kind Regards,

Sylvia Acevedo

From the Interventionist’s Desk

Tips

Focus Attention: Use your eyes, ears, and brain Being Assertive involves using an assertive pos-

ture (face the person, head up, and shoulders back) and tone of voice (calm, firm voice; re-spectful words)

When you feel Empathy for someone, Compas-

sion is a good way to show it Being able to feel and understand what another

person is feeling prepares students to manage their own strong emotions and solve interperson-al problems with others.
