On the morning of August 20th,

many Pikeville citizens awoke to see

their town doused in pink! This was due

to the event Paint Pikeville Pink, a 5k

walk/run to raise money for the Susan

G. Komen foundation for breast cancer

awareness. This amazing event raised

$10,300 to benefit the Susan G. Komen

foundation.

PHS Student Council, FBLA, and

KEY Club came out to support the

participants! Various awards were

given for things such as artwork, local decorations, and race winners in each

age division.

In the continuing effort to encourage breast cancer awareness,

the PHS Student Council is sponsoring a

blue-jean dance Saturday, September

17th in the commons area.

As we know, grandparents have a tremendous impact on our lives. To honor grandparents, Pikeville Elementary hosted their 3rd annual Grandparent’s Day on September 8. During this new tradition, grandparents are invited to enjoy lunch with their grandchildren. A total of 385 grandparents came to enjoy lunch with their grandchildren. Ms. Dawn Rowe, event coordinator, was pleased with the support shown by their grandparents and would like to encourage the grandparents to visit

Grandparent’s Day throughout the year and to become involved with their grandchild’s education. This event is hosted by the parent liaison program, Family Resource and Youth Service Center

and Title One.

I have a wonderful first grade classroom and I look forward to a GREAT year!”

Mrs. Martin stated, “I am thrilled to be teaching Art at Pikeville Elementary School! The magical journey to get Art Smart has gotten off to a great start! I look forward to providing learning experiences that will encourage my students to freely explore art and use their imaginations to create their own works of art. It is going to be a GREAT year!”

The Pikeville Independent School District has been chosen as one of 18 Kentucky schools to receive the 2011 SchoolMatch 20th annual “What Parents Want,” award. SchoolMatch, an independent nationwide service, provides services to corporations and consumers when moving across town, upgrading residences, relocating to a new area, when negotiating child custody

and for general information about schools. Only 16 percent of the nation’s public school districts

have been recognized for meeting the needs of families choosing schools.
