Dr. Stya Paul, eminent industrialist, educationist, philanthropist and freedom fighter, provided the foundation and inspiration for the

emergence of the Apeejay Stya Group and the Apeejay Education Society as trusted symbols of quality and excellence in the

countrys educational and industrial landscape. A pioneering entrepreneur with a far-sighted vision of the future, Dr. Stya Paul was

instrumental in the rise of the Apeejay Group as one of the biggest industrial houses of the independent India, and was a leading

architect of the countrys emergence as a self-reliant industrial superpower, founded on the strength of Indian capability and

enterprise. As Chairman Emeritus, he has guided the Apeejay Stya Group -a privately and closely-held leading Indian industrial and

investment House - to become one of the major corporate Houses of the country, with several alliances, collaborations and significant

presence in Europe, Middle East and East Asia.Dr Stya Paul, fondly called Sethji, was one of the earliest industrialists in the country

who recognized the great role that industry could play in providing quality education and to contribute towards nation-building.

Towards this objective, he decided to set up not-for-profit educational institutes across the country where scientific and career-

building knowledge could be provided along with inculcation of values and appreciation of Indian culture arts and heritage. Starting

with a small school in Jalandhar in 1967, the 13schools and 16 institutions of higher learning established by him over the last four

decades under the aegis of the Apeejay Education Society have flowered to become symbols of excellence in their various disciplines,

moulding the lives and careers of future generations of the country. The year 2010 also saw the realization of Dr. Stya Pauls lifetime

dream of setting up the Apeejay Stya University - a seat of global learning that would bring about transformation of society through

value-based education, man-making and nation-building, by blending together the dual identities of a technology and research based

university with a liberal arts institution. Dr. Stya Pauls forays in the field of education exhibited the same meticulous planning,

concern for detail and flawless execution that were his hallmark throughout his life. Each of the institutions set up by him was an act

of love and he nurtured them to success by creating a family-like environment through his personal touch and a shared vision ofexcellence and ownership with all the stake-holders in the institutions. His vision of value-based holistic education, focusing on

acquiring thinking skills and learning how to learn for life was truly global, transcending the confines of state and country. It was

also Dr. Stya Paul who, as the undisputed voice of the industry in young independent India, first embraced the concept of corporate

social responsibility and emphasized the need for an integral relationship between ethics and business.During his long and illustrious

career, Dr. Stya Paul has been actively associated with several social, cultural and professional bodies, and held responsible positions

reflecting his versatility, leadership and standing in industry and social circles. His philanthropy and generosity knew no bounds, and

throughout his life, he helped the physically-handicapped and the needy with financial help and educational/vocational opportunities,

thus enabling them to join the mainstream. Over the years, numerous honors and accolades were bestowed upon him, in a life richly

lived and full of sharing and caring. But he never desired any monuments to himself, though there are living monuments, in the shape

of multitudes of people across the country, who share their memories of how he touched and transformed their lives in his own unique

    way.

A true Karmayogi, Dr. Stya Paul retained his zeal for hard work even in his advanced age and remained keenly involved in the

management of the Apeejay institutions well into his nineties. Active till the very end, he left this world peacefully on June 7, 2010

while preparing to leave for his office. But his lifes work and achievements, and the lasting legacy of excellence that he leaves

behind, will continue to inspire and guide us in all our endeavours, as we strive to achieve the goals to which he devoted his life. Like

the ever-soaring falcon of Iqbals couplet that inspired Dr. Stya Paul throughout his lifes journey, his spirit will live on forever.

    THE ART OF READING BOOKS

    To read is to empower

    To empower is to write

    To write is to influence

    To influence is to change

    To change is to live

    Jane Evershed

Before the printed books, Memory ruled daily life and fully deserved the name art preservative of

all arts. The Memory of individuals and of communities carried knowledge through time and

space. By Memory, fruits of education were garnered, preserved and distributed. Memory was thus

an awesome faculty which everyone had to learn and cultivate. The ancient Greeks gave mythicform to this fact that ruled our lives: THE GODDESS OF MEMORY.

After the arrival of printing, realms of everyday life once ruled and served by Memory would be

governed by the printed page. Printed books were far more portable, more accurate and more

convenient to refer to and, of course, accessible to public.

Thus was also born the concept of authorship in a formal sense and printed books became the new

warehouse of Memory. An unintended consequence of this new phenomenon was what Daniel

Boorstin describes as the renewed interest in the art of forgetting.

Teach me not the art of remembering, but the art of forgetting, for I remember things I do not

wish to remember, but I cannot forget things I wish to forget. (Cicero).

Since the 15th century when Johann Gutenberg first invented the art of mass printing, books have

come to occupy an important place in our lives. However, what always bothers a new book-reader

is how to cultivate the taste for books and thus develop The Art of Book Reading. In fact, it

begins with a question: how to identify and choose a good book!

There is no easy formula one can recommend. However, few tips may help those students,

    displaying interest in books.

Start by exploring the few popular genres of books, finding a genre can be important because the

ones you like are the ones that have a higher probability of grabbing your attention. Here are a few

popular genres: Fantasy, Fiction, Non-Fiction, History, Science etc

Half the battle is won if you are reading something that interests and delights you.

Access to the Vedas is the greatest privilege this century may claim over all previous centuries J.Robert Oppenheimer

But do you know how to read them in order to get the fullest enjoyment possible? Following

approach recommended by experts on how to start reading a book should help:

Read the Title of the Book Read the publisher introduction on the cover

    Read the authors introduction

Scan the chapter titles and sub-headings

    Go through the index

    Flip through the book

    Read the first chapter

(It will help if you happen to read the review of the said book in a newspaper or a journal).

Find a place that is quiet. Quiter the place, easier it is to read.Read when you are in the right mood.

If you are hyper, angry or too worried to concentrate you either will not get too far or forget what

    you read.

When you start a book, and find you are not getting interested, read a few more pages. If you still

feel bored by the storyline or the narrative, put it away, and find a more engrossing book.

Assuming you still find it hard to develop liking for books, read what famous authors have to say

about their passion for books and then discover why you can derive such a pleasure from reading

    the classics.

Note that if you find your eyes closing, or if you feel tired, then place a bookmark into the page,

    shut the book.

When tired, the mind wanders, and you will no longer enjoy or retain what you are reading.

Sometimes, while reading books that are complex and difficult, it can be a challenge to understand

the actual meaning. This can make the book uninviting and or uninteresting and you can get lost at

times. To deal with such books, go back and re-read the parts that confuse you and you may actually

    start to like the book!

But at the same time, don't refer to dictionary so often that it spoils your reading interest; it would

be better if you assume the meaning. It is important to read efficiently and capture relevant ideas

and understand what the author wants to communicate.

When you reach the end of a chapter and the end of the book itself, think for a minute about howthe book made you feel. In doing this, you are deepening your impressions of the book and

triggering your learning skills to help you to absorb the various meanings, some obvious and some

    subtle, in the book.

The reader will soon discover that Books can a be a good friend. They can take you to places that

you may never see. They can introduce you to things you may never know.

Fear is the foundation of most governments John Adams

Once a student gets used to reading books, he/she will go to any length to find a particular book.

They earn various names associated with a gentle madness enjoyed by book-lovers who are known

as Bibliomanics, Booksworms, Book-lovers, Book hunters.

After spending many evenings poring over different titles some interesting and some not-so-

interesting, he/ she will automatically learn the art of knowing what books to read, when to read,

how to read, how much to read and what to ignore as if listening to the noted philopopher and

writer Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626 AD): Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed,

and some few to be chewed and digested: that is some books to be read only in parts, others to be

read but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with dilegence and attention.

Guttenberg, the inventor, died a desolate, broken man around 1468. But the forces that the printing

technology, though primitive initially, unleashed translated into renaissance in western Europe.

Book writing became a passion for those interested in spreading their ideals and theories across

borders. The most subversive of inventions, the printed book, was thus born.

Almost 550 years later, in the 21st century, we print books by many thousands every year. But for

the society to benefit more substantially, book reading habit has to be encouraged and cultivated

amongst the children and the students, and also among others who need to keep continously

updating themselves. As remarked by the noted management guru Peter Drucker:We now accept

the fact that learning is a life-long process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing

task is to teach people how to learn.

Social progress can be measured by the social position of the female sex. Karl Marx

A Striped Animal: One For The Road

One evening, not too long ago, I had to visit a doctor at the next block, across the street.

Considering the short distance, I decided to walk it. I went up to the crossing and stood close to thezebra. But what do I see? There were about 3 cars and 2 two-wheelers on either ends. Not only that,

there were several such vehicles, way ahead of the white line before the zebra, they were supposed

    to stop at.

Now how do I walk on the zebra and cross over? We dont walk much on the roads, so confronted

with this unusual challenge, I was taken aback. I looked around and saw I had no option but to go

right over to the middle of the crossing, instead of the zebra. The downside was that I would run the

risk of getting hit by the vehicles zipping past in all directions.

Phew! I made it, though I had to virtually force a motor vehicle to stop, so I that I could continue in

    one piece.

How often do we notice this on the roads in our part of the city, where you dont come across too

many traffic policemen? There are vehicles coming on to the wrong side, those which zip past at

break neck speeds, others which overtake you (never mind the rude stares) at points where you

could barely pass your car through. The list is endless. As if, the pot holes on the footpaths were not

enough for the poor pedestrians. And not to talk about the open man-holes which suck in many a

    children and adults, each year.

There were certain things I have been always conscious of such as, allowing children and older

people to cross the road, if I can help it, when I drive. But this was something, I had never

consciously given a thought to; it was the way of life in the city.

I thus resolved that each time I am waiting on a red light, I would ensure, no matter what, that my

vehicle always stops short of the white line, before the zebra. (Of course, almost every driver is

careful at the major crossings of Delhi, where traffic police is just waiting for you to commit an

error of this kind but it is different in the off-center areas). I discussed it with a friend and he replied

that if I were to do this, other vehicles will creep from behind and park ahead of me. Also, that he

has noticed that people behind you always begin to honk at you, for they expect you to go as far as

you can, close to the crossing. So he does what all others do; never mind the zebra.

But I said, I would go ahead with my decision. The first day, I did that, I waited anxiously for the

behaviours my friend had discussed. Thankfully, no one honked behind me. But what surprised me

was that two other cars parked left and right next to me, before the line. Oh boy! Was I pleased? The

same evening, on my return from office, one car stood next to me while another on the right,

overtook me and parked ahead of the zebra, soon to be followed by another, which parked right

    over the zebra.

And that is the reason why this victory is great, because different players have made contributions to the win. Sachin Tendulkar

So what do I do now? Each day, I religiously follow my resolve, except on just two occasions in the

past 3 months, that it slipped my mind and I drove over the zebra. I quickly reversed. And what do

my other co-drivers on the road, do? On some days, cars on either lanes, on my side of the road,

park next to me, leaving the zebra alone. On some other days, a car on one side (left/ right lane)

parks short of the zebra while another stands over it.

I dont know whether those which leave the zebra alone, do so out of a realization of their

obligation, that, I feel, I may have reminded them of, or they do so out of a suspicion that there

must be a police man close by since my car is correctly parked.

Nevertheless, its heartening to note that at least some good behaviour is visible. My friend tells me

that it is not (my) demonstration effect, rather, there are always some people who are correct on

the crossings and it is they, I generally see. Never mind, I say. Even if I am the only one I have

corrected in the process, its progress enough.

As someone said, Resolve today, that you will never be a party to corruption, and there will be one

rascal less in this world, hereafter.

to reach the other side of the road?

Is zebra, a white animal with black stripes, or black animal with white stripes?

you pick up this smart night suit, dear?

    JOY OF READING

The other day I finished reading a book, and as I turned the last page, I felt a pang.as if Id lost a

good friend. A good book can be a greatest of companion, and that is what I realized that day. Just

like a loyal friend I went back to it and read it all over againsounds weird, right? But that is what

a good book does to you so its rightly said a good book has no ending.

Books have always been my friend in need, and I consider myself a book addict, often proudly

stating I love reading. But then what is reading? I looked up the meaning in the dictionary, and it

said to examine and grasp the meaning. Is it only this? No, its like you start reading a book and

you are transmitted into a mesmerizing world, you feel beautifully alive, traveling with the author to

an altogether new world, getting into the character, feeling the same, being a part of that world

allows you to soak in the new essence of life away from its complexities. So when you buy a newbook, you buy a new life.

I discovered the joy of reading quite early in life, with our beloved Enid Blyton, however I

graduated soon to Shakespeare with Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, King Lear, As you like it. Read

most of him, then went on to feminist writings and other classics. Being a literature student it gave

me immense opportunity to cherish them. Then gradually I discovered non-frictions, autobiography,

travel books and so on. I can say Ive evolved as a person with the books I read. Just as they say you

are known by the company you keep, I think you are better known by the books you read. To quote

Barrow here which aptly puts forth my thought; He that loves a book will never want a faithful

friend, a wholesome counselor, a cheerful companion, an effectual comforter. By study, by reading,

by thinking, one may innocently divert and pleasantly entertain himself as in all weather, as in allfortune.

Now coming to what to read, its just like food, you eat what tastes good and you read what tastes

real good. When it comes to choosing the books I believe in what Bacon had said Some books are

to be tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested.

Reading can give you immense joy; its a door which can lead you away from worldly intricacies, it

itches your mind, develops it with new ideas, new events, new people, whom you meet during your

journey of a book, reading can be for leisure or for purifying taste or for better acquaintance of

facts, but whatever be the purpose it leaves its deep imprints on the mind. To end with Bacon again

Read not to contradict and to confute, not to believe and take for granted, not to find talk anddiscourse, but to weigh and consider.

Sometimes adversity is what you need to face in order to become successful. Zig Ziglar, Motivational Guru

    Message from the Student Editors

I knew the wild riders and the vacant land were about to vanish forever... and the more I

considered the subject, the bigger the forever loomed. Without knowing how to do it, I began torecord some facts around me, and the more I looked the more the panorama unfolded.

    Frederic Remington

These words by Frederic Remington symbolize the importance of having a broader perspective to

things. Panorama as the name suggests is a comprehensive and an unobstructed view of events so it

is in sync with the true spirit of ASM where the emphasis is on enhancing creativity and developing

    a broader perspective in life.

The thought behind Panorama is to encourage students to think beyond boundaries, break all

barriers and bring out new and exhilarating ideas, and also to shed their inhibitions and come up

with ideas not only from the field of managment but also cultural, societal and technical fields.

Bringing out Panorama has been infact a process of churning something vibrant and exuberant and

we hope we have lived to the spirit that Panorama stands for.

Also we would like to thank Ms Anindita Banerjee for giving us an opportunity to be a part

Panorama's editorial board and to all those who have contributed in bringing out this years'

A clear conscience is the softest pillow in the world. N.R. Narayanamurthy

One Trek You Have Got to Do

I am sure some of you would have experienced a full-fledged Himalayan Trek or probably

experienced a little bit of trekking during your forays to hill stations. During, my stay in IIT

Roorkee for four years, I was lucky to live among a group of friends, with whom I am in touch evennow, who used to love trekking in nearby Garhwal Himalayas. Thus I have been through lots of

Treks. I have also been to many National Parks and places of natural beauty in the U.S and India but

believe me that nothing compares to trekking in the Himalayas.

After my first trek in the Garhwals, when the entire team had carried a heavy load of luggage and

tents in their back packs, I realized that when you are trekking in India, even in the higher reaches

of Himalayas, you never need to carry much stuff in your backpacks. Instead its prudent to keep

your luggage light and take the help of friendly villagers, who will help you in everything from

providing cooked food to a comfortable hut to stay. You will need to carry money to pay for these

services but at the same time remember that villagers on these non-commercial routes are very

simple people who worry more about the respect with which you treat them.

Amongst all the treks that I have been through, one of the best treks is the Har-Ki Doon trek. I

strongly feel that if there is one trek that you have got to do then it is this one. The best part of this

trek is that it has a gradual climb and thus it is easy for even the beginners. The entire trek goes

through lush green pine forests. Accompanying the entire stretch of the trek is the Tons river. Since

the trek goes towards the source of the river, as you climb higher, the river also climbs higher along-

with you. Throughout the entire stretch of the trek you will criss-cross the river several times on

lovely wooden bridges. The entire combination of high mountain ranges, river, pine forests and

wooden bridges makes the entire trek magical. On the way you will find several villages where you

    can stay.

The Har-Ki Doon Valley is situated at a height of 3,500 meters above the sea level. The entire valley

is full of wildlife and is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. The region is a part of

Govind Pashu Vihar Wildlife sanctuary. The valley is also the base to Swargarohini Peak (approx.

21000 ft). The trek from Taluka to Osla is through dense pine forests while the trek from Osla to

Har-Ki-Doon is through grassy lands and pine forests.

How to reach this beautiful dreamland: Rishikesh is easily reachable by Road / Train. From there

the tough part of the journey is reaching Sankri/Netwar approximately 200 Km away. You can enjoy

scenic views on the way. Once you have reached Sankri, you can start the 36 Km trek next day

covering approximately 12 km each day. Thus you will trek from Sankri to Taluka to Osla andfinally to Har Ki Doon. You will come back the same way. The best time for this trek is from June

to October. Believe me, its a mild trek through stunningly scenic natural surroundings and you will

enjoy each and every minute of it.

    A Passage through the day

At dawn a red glow appears on the horizon,

it looks like a shimmering pearl, the rising sun ,

its arrival marks the beginning of a new day,

When the chirpy birds sing all their way.

Eyes feel fresh, soul becomes pure,

when the sun appears on the horizon,

just as a shimmering pearl in the ocean.

The elegant rays of the sparkling sun,

make me sing, dance and run,

the rising sun is the best part of nature,it gives pleasure and joy to every creature.

Then comes the time for the sun to set,

    giving way to dazzling night,

Here appears the 'moon' in the dim light

Hey! It peeps out from the clouds,

    looks into my eyes,

    Moon, knight of the night,

    Ah! What a sight

Wind whistles, leaves rustle in the dim light,So soothing, so relaxing is the lovely night,

Wet leaves' pearl shimmers in the moonlight,

Wind embraces.. ah! So tight! Ah! So tight!

Faith is not something to grasp, it is a state to grow into Mohandas Gandhi

    Every Day a Soldier Dies

Soldier-a selfless soul ready to die, it is as the word itself says and reality is no different. Soldier is

one who fights for his nation and doesnt consider anything before his mother land. A soldier is a

wallfor its nations boundaries who bears all the blows on himself but doesnt say a thing and

protects his nation against all the forces acting against it.

The word soldier is made up seven letters; seven is a number which is very significant, according to

scriptures seven symbolizes completeness and perfection, and I see nothing wrong in it, a soldieris a complete and perfect person who is away from all other worldly pleasures, living thousand

miles away from his family and friends facing all the extreme cold and heat and all the other threats

provided to him, without expecting anything from the people and what everyone do, they take them

for granted. Every time there is a war or an attack on the democracy of the nation a soldier is the

first person who step forward to take the bullet into his chest so that it keeps away from the

innocents. A soldier never dies alone with him dies a son, a brother, a husband, a father and with allthis a family is broken and shattered and then this family will be on a war without their warrior and

that war will be for survival.

Being a soldier is a very big commitment, a commitment with all those who sleeps with this belief

that someone is out there to guarding any sort of threat moving towards them; this is a huge and

great responsibility to shoulder that if a person is not perfect it will be impossible to carry it out

successfully. But a soldier not only successfully shoulders this responsibility but also in lieu of that

even sacrifices his life without giving a second thought. This dedication and determination of a

soldier is no match. All the hardships and difficulties faced on physical and mental level are not big

enough to effect the emotion that a soldier have towards his motherland. This makes a soldier a

complete and perfect human being. Understanding the soldiers life is not a difficult task but livinga soldiers life is no ordinary task, it requires courage, selflessness and above that ability to sacrifice

life for others who might dont even values it.

A soldier is an unsung real life hero, who is glorified upon his death, a soldiers life is full of

challenges that he faces on daily basis regarding everything and above all the toughest challenge

that he faces is to stay alive because all it takes is a single bullet at the right spot and the game is

over for him. Another aspect of soldiers life is when he is partially dead i.e. when bullet hits the

wrong spot and the soldier is not able to stand again to defend his country though he is alive but he

is not living at that time of life because he is fighting a war within himself, about accepting the truth

that from now on he will not able to do what he loves to do the most. Every time a soldier gives his

life for safety and security of the nation it is an unwritten, unsaid and not payable debt on the peopleof the country and it is our duty to look after and support those families who had suffered the blow

that their brave son, brother, husband or father will never return.

They promised their families that they would be back soon, they more than kept their word, went asmere men, came back as Heroes. In Coffins

Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant. R.L. Stevenson

    Twitter and Twittering Birds

Even by stressing your brain nerves one cannot exactly remember as to when was the last time, they

heard twittering of birds. But look at the time; its not even half an hour before you had updatedyour twitter status. This mere difference of time is enough to show how the reality is becoming a

thing of past and now we live, eat and drink in the virtual computerized addicted world, strangled

between the wires forever. Due to many reasons, birds are nowhere to be seen these days and if we

talk about metropolitan cities, I wonder if nursery kids would be aware about the names of the

    birds.

Global warming being one of those many reasons, has almost forced disappearance of birds from

the real sky. Those were the golden days when a poet used to write a poem on being inspired by a

    song of bird.

Keats, for that matter, wrote his famous work called An Ode to a Nightingale on being gettinginspired by the song of a nightingale. But the scenario is almost at its worst now when hardly

anyone can even distinguish between a crow and a nightingale. But on the other hand, the virtual

world presents a virtual place where humans can enact like birds and tweet whatever is there on

their mind. Its a mini blog site, where everyone is visible to everyone else, but the only difference

is that here, on this platform, birds are present just as the logo of the website and beyond that there

action of twittering is equalled to what the user talks about. This picture shows how birds are being

overpowered by humans and till what extent humans are being overpowered by the technology. This

scene if not stopped quickly, things would fall in a distorted image. So to conclude I would like to

say that humans should not overpower the nature and at the same time should not allow technology

    to overpower their own brain.

    Software Piracy & Open Source

    Software Piracy

Imitation is the best form of flattery, that does not include the software industry when they say it.

Software industry is badly hit with plagiarism and piracy, and it has been a headache for companiesthe world over. Piracy means that the company which develops the software does not receive anymoney upon the use of the software, moreover with software ranging from a few dollars to over athousand , piracy means the companies register huge losses. A 2009 study by Business SoftwareAlliance found the annual losses due to piracy was $51bn. Few of the biggest hit companies wereMicrosoft, Adobe, and Video Game companies.

There are two ways to reduce piracy, one is buying genuine software and abiding by theiragreements of non-duplicacy and redistribution. Another would be to use alternate sodtwares andnot bound by agreements on usage and distribution. such software come under the generic categoryofFree and Open Source Software (FOSS) or just Open Source Software. Here we discuss about the

    latter in detail.

    Open Source

Open source movement was started in the year 1983, when Richard M. Stallman, a member of theHacker group at MIT Artificial Intelligence Labs, declared the initiation of GNU project. In 1984the 'GNU Operating System' project was started and the Free Software Foundation was formed in1985. In 1991, 21 year Linus Trovalds released the legendary open sourcekernel "Linux". Whatstarted as a hobby picked up popularity with the 0.12 release of the kernel, which was releasedunder GNU. Although it took some time for the volunteers to accept the source code and startdeveloping it as a community initiative, but once the developers and "hobbyists" picked it up, the

project never looked back. Since then it has been upgraded over and over, till the latest release of2.6.36. Meanwhile, various other free software for varied tasks were being simultaneouslydeveloped and released.

While mostly people know FOSS as only Linux, however it is just the tip of the iceberg. OpenSource software range from a simplea simple application like calculator to more sophisticated onelike statistical analysis tools or a physics simulator. Another advantage that Open Source softwarehave over proprietary ones is that most of these are community backed and have better support.

    Who can use Them

Generally the first question that comes to our mind is Will I be able to use it?, Will my files

work on it?,etc. The answer to these is that almost all the commonly used files are portable.Off late, Governments and Educational institutions world over are adopting Linux, mainly becauseof the costs involved and also due to moral and ethical reasons. The organizational users of Linuxinclude the White House Website, the US Department of Defense, Spanish Government, Frenchparliament and various municipalities across Europe have also adopted Open Source.

If Microsoft ever does applications for Linux it means I've won. Linus Torvalds

Educational institutions and NPOs like OLPC(One Laptop Per Child) and Universities in India andabroad have started adopting Linux. The morality of these organisations is reflected in usinglicensed software instead of pirated ones. Many of the super computers and servers run on freesoftware.

    Whats in it for You!

For any student morality and ethics should play a pivotal role in their lives. Its here, that FOSShelps students by being affordable and flexible to use. Given below is the list of commonly usedProprietary Software along with theirFOSScounterparts and the cost comparison of the two :

Free and Open Source Proprietary Cost of Proprietary Software

    OpenOffice.org MS Office $90- $680

    gretl and PSPP SPSS $1600

Firefox/Google Chrome MS Internet Explorer Bundled with MS Windows

    Linux(Ubuntu, Fedora,etc.) MS Windows/ Mac OS X $30 - $320

The above comparison clearly shows the cost benefits of the FOSS. It also shows how much therespective Proprietary software company loses for every pirated copy an individual uses.

Other software used in business firms/corporates include ERP, CRM, Audio-video editing tools, etal. Corporates and educational institutions can cut on their costs substantially by using Open sourcealternatives. Educational Institutions in India need to take the initiative to curb piracy, which can bedone by propagating Open Source software like OpenBravo(ERP), GIMP (image modification),PiTiVi(video editing tool) to name a few.

Ultimately, its upto the User's dicretion, whether they use Open Source or Propreitary software. Butif one must use propreitary software, they should use it legally by buying them and abiding by theAgreements published along with them software and start thinking of software piracy as an act ofstealing. So stop piracy and respect developers.

A man who won't die for something is not fit to live. Martin Luther King Jr.

    Bevy of followers: Incredible INDIA

No doubt, the Indian manifestation has proved in everyway its incredibility. Along with the fact

about its abundance in great enriched heritage, world class technology, competitive attitude towardsrest of countys state, possession of the urge for being a superpower, the best part lies that it too

have a unique collection of human, whom i refer THE FOLLOWERS.

Many times I observe people contradicting on others for a quite right sense in everyones view but

they themselves at times contribute for being culprit in some other peoples view. And here

surprisingly, I myself became the part. We all point out the big bash word CORRUPTION but till

date none can identify the main source.

To eradicate an issue one has to vanish the root cause and the matter of concern is that nobody till

now cannot name that root cause. It is not some I-am-a-fool kind of expression that I am referring

but we all being the part must recognize some concern and pay proper attention.Last day when I was on the way to college I encountered a scene which actually forced me to write

this. My dad was driving and I was enjoying the morning through window visions. At a red light

usually people are suppose to follow the ethical rules, but its super powered people you see.

Anyway my dad too became the part there for stoppage. Suddenly an estilo, which was not actually

leading the crowd managed to overtake the others and crossed the light. And then the scene began

almost 15 cars in the next minute followed that emperor. Shamelessly we were too the part. And

this is what I call the main problem. I can say this for sure if the initiator was left alone to drive off

the next time he couldnt dare to even think to attempt the same. But the issue is our bonding. We

all are so kind that we never make others feel lonely for any task.

Hence it is well said that excess of anything is bad and our togetherness and supporting attitude is

what sometimes spoils the whole nation.

A vote is like a rifle; its usefulness depends upon the character of the use Theodore Roosvelt

The Book Review-The White Tiger by Arvind Adiga

    Aravind Adiga's razor-sharp debut novel

explores with wit and insight the realities of

the two Indias, and reveals what happens

when the inhabitants of one collides with

another. Adiga has been brave in tackling a

complex and urgent subject. The pace, well

controlled in the opening and middle sections,

begins to wave a bit towards the end. But this

is a minor quibble. There is much talk in this

novel of revolution and insurrection: Balram

even justifies his employers murder as an act

of class warfare. In bare minimum, unsentimental prose, Adiga strips away the

sheen of a self-congratulatory nation and

reveals instead a country where the social

compact is being stretched to the breaking

point and further. The White Tigeris a

    penetrating piece of social commentary,

attuned to the inequalities that persist despite

Indias new prosperity. It correctly inflates --

and deflates -- middle-class Indias collective

    euphoria.

It is written as a first-person, sharp narration byone Balram Halwai, a self-proclaimed

entrepreneur in Bangaluru. He tells about how

he came to be successful. He grew up in a

small coal mining village in Bihar, born to a

    poor rickshaw-puller, and named only

"Munna," "boy," until his teacher named him

"Balram" and gave him a birth date so that he

    could vote for the landlord.

Along with Balrams journey from rags to

riches, we also read the two different sides ofour own country. And apparently both are

aware about the other side, but theres no effort

in improving either of them!. It is about two

countries in one: an India of darkness and light.

Every place on the map of India near the ocean

is well-off. But the river brings darkness to

India - the black river. But Balram's gleeful and

    cynical voice captures modern India,only

    exuberant reality,no nostalgic lyricism here.

He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life. Muhammad Ali

    Give life: Donate blood

HUMAN BLOOD is one of the most precious assets of the human body. In spite of jet-speed

medical advancements and remarkable emergence of technology, nothing could replace humanblood. The human body is the only source of blood, for the person himself and others, who are in

    need.

Blood donation is the only method of accumulating blood to meet emergency requirements for

saving lives. In unfortunate incidents like, road accidents, bomb blasts and natural disasters, people

suffer injuries that shed huge amount of blood which immediately require replacement.

In India, half of the population is medically fit to donate blood. However, only four in a thousand

are blood donors, out of which only five per cent are women. There are four main blood groups i.e.,

O, A, B and AB. Group O is the most common and therefore the most in demand.

New blood cells are constantly generated in the body. A person can donate blood 168 times between

18 to 60 years. Males can donate every three months while females every four months. All donated

blood is regenerated within 21 days. At one time only 350 ml is taken from a donor in not more than

20 minutes including time for rest and refreshment.

Blood donation is harmless and safe for the body. Rather, it is a social responsibility where the

donor is donating for saving lives of his fellow beings. He himself may use the same in his own

need. So todays donor may be tomorrows recipient.

There are several myths and misconceptions related to blood donation, however, the truth remainsthat blood donation is safe and does not cause any kind of weakness. Other reasons for many people

who hesitate to donate blood can be fear of needles, pain, sight of blood, possible ill effects,

objection from elders, ignorance and illiteracy among others.

Its time for society to overcome these hurdles and stand up for a cause. Blood donation is the

easiest way to save someones life. All it costs is little courage!

A man is never more truthful than when he acknowledges himself a liar. Mark Twain

    Media pelted upon by media!!!

The Television news networks today have become all about dirty gaming where the issues areexaggerated to sensationalize for TRP gains. Being greedy for ratings and manipulating stories to

grab eyeballs is something just not expected of a news channel. Oh come on, they arent an

    entertainment source!

Of late this trend where the media has started bringing its own self to the lime light is raising

questions in the minds of many thinking audiences. Its all about entertainment and no news.

Instead of money fuelling creativity, I wonder how has the television business become a means for

creativity to fuel money? Well, I guess its simple!! These channels act as a mouthpiece for certain

political parties and a lot of things that we see on it therefore can't be taken seriously. I am sure

having a free press in a democracy is no reason to call for media industry's insatiable appetite for

advertisers and viewers! If the media is a truth-telling machinery in a democratic society, especiallyin the age of competition and compulsions, it should stick to being truthful to its utmost and not

make entertainment out of a serious piece of news. In times to come, it shall change the notion in

the minds of people that its all about news and no entertainment!!

Films like Rann, a Ram Gopal Varma production portrayed how news on television is manipulated

to suit the needs of politicians and is about the abuse of the media's power to mislead the aam

janta and the recent Aamir khans Peepli Live piognantly brings out the bureaucratic hypocrisy

and media malice. The film is a pungent satire on the electronic media and shows how battalions of

OB vans reach a news spot to extract even a bit of information relevant or irrelevant (but mostly

irrelevant) which they can make into Breaking News or a so called Exclusive Story.

Id say that its time that the news channels should stick to their job and behave only as a truth-telling machinery. It should put its foot down and not succumb to any competitions or compulsions!

An Inconvenient Truth : NEED Theory

THE Word Need is a just a four letter word but has a very deeper meaning, in dictionary it means adesire to be meet, but the way I see, it have a lot more significance than this.

What is need from where it arises, what give birth to the need, why it is always that we are in a need

of something and that could be in any form like-money, person, food etc. its always like that we

need this, we need that. Human Being is an unusual creature and also termed as social animal, what

makes it different from the real animals is the power to think about what is right and wrong, but

what really connects human being among themselves is the need.

We always need each other for assistance or guidance or say we are together because we cannot

survive being alone, need is mother of everything. But sometimes, it becomes harsh and rude thatevery action that is performed is in with respect to the need so to cover-up this problem few

beautiful and soothing terms was created like- Habit, an action performed on regular basis to fulfillsome need and the other one is most commonly used and is used universally in every corner of the

world despite the fact that earth is round, it is love, love is a selfish entity which itself says I need

you because I love you or I love you because I need you.

Lets start with an individual who came in this world because his/her parents have to prove a point

about themselves in front of the society, when he will grew up he is ought to repeat the same line of

action because this is what is expected from him being a part of the society whether willingly or

unwillingly. If I am ought to carry out the norms which are made by the society that is because it is

the need of the society which is also a kind of hypocrisy paradox. Our society is designed on the

grounds of need, every single thing that is constructed is on the basis of the need, marrying

someone because you need someone to be with though it transform into love later on, having kidsbecause it is necessary that you have kids after getting married you need them to your marriage to

another level and from old Indian view point you need those kids when grow big enough so that

they look after you when you are old, a bitter truth to accept. And this cycle goes on and on, from

generations to generations, parents to their children, from them to their children and so on.

There is one problem that arises because of this need which is expectation, it can be explained as if I

need something, my expectations for getting that thing increases, there is direct relation between

need and expectation .i.e. if the need for something increases then the expectation related to that is

automatically goes up and we all know the more we expect more the chances of being getting

sacked in between which ultimately yields to negative outcomes like-depression et al.

The Need Theory deals with all the aspect concerning with the effects of the need on the human life

and this not the end, just a beginning.

Courage is grace under pressure. Ernest Hemingway

    Delhi: The city of diversity

DELHI, DILLI, Shahjanhanbad, Indraprastha - one city and several names. The city has an x-factor

that makes it special and sets it apart from rest of the world and other Indian cities. Perhaps, it is the

wide cultural mix that you find here or the kind of history it has.

Delhi is probably the only city in the world that has been destructed and reconstructed so many

times. The huge city has seen several rulers coming, conquering and fading away, from Slaves to

Lodhis from Mughals to Britishers. The city grew with its rulers.

Its explicit history makes the city worth a visit. The city, now the national capital of worlds largest

democracy - India, has a lot to offer its visitors. Situated in the north of the nation, it boasts of

walled city - Purani Dilli, historic monuments, national museums, lush green gardens, wide streets

with trees, havelis, farm houses and the list goes on.

The city does not disappoint anyone. Artists find their paradise in Mandi House, which is an area

near Delhis shopping hub Connaught Place and includes several theatres, photo galleries and

    auditoriums.

Delhi has a different way to do its business as well. Most of the Delhis high profile business and

cultural events find its venue at beautiful green and eco-friendly campuses of the India Habitat

    Centre and India International Centre.

The walled city, a wonder in herself, has everything to fall for. Its famous for almost everything it

has, the centuries old structures, food joints, markets and most of all the people. Old Delhi still has

the Mughal charm intact to it.

The nations second largest metro (first is Mumbai) also boasts of world renowned religious places.

Birla Temple, which was built in 17th century, was later renovated by Birla family and inaugurated

by none other than Mahatma Gandhi.

Delhis walled city also has the Asias largest mosque, Jama Masjid. And not to forget the newly

added asset to citys beauty - Akshardham Temple, which is the largest Hindu temple in the world.

With its old charm, Delhi does not cease to become the hot destination for fashion freaks. With

growing number of fashion shows being held in the city, Delhi has become the upcoming fashion

capital of the country. Indian film industry has also shifted its focus from old and well exploitedMumbai locations to untouched Delhi resources.

In the recent past, several films have been shot with the city as the backdrop. Bollywood

blockbuster Rang De Basanti, Fanna, Pyar ke Side Effects, Hum Tum were shot in Delhi.

Delhi has a huge list of malls that offer almost each and every brand from the world of fashion,

technology, food, accessories, furniture, jewellery, etc.

Usne socha "Ye kutta to Sher ka shikar karta hai" Aur Sher wahan se jaan bachaa ke bhaaga.

Ped par baitha ek Bandar yeh sab tamasha dekh raha tha. Usne socha yeh mauka achha hai Sher ko

saari kahani bata deta hoon - Sher se dosti ho jayegi aur usse zindagi bhar ke liye jaan ka khatra dur

ho jayega..

hai. Sher ne zor se kaha, "Chal mere saath abhi uska khel khatam karta hoon" aur Bandar ko apani

peeth par baitha kar Sher kutte ki taraf lapka.

Can u imagine the quick management by the DOG...

Kutte ne Sher ko aate dekha to ek baar phir uskii taraf peeth karke baith gaya aur zor zor se bolne

laga, "Iss Bandar ko bheje hue 1 ghanta ho gaya, abhi tak ek Sher phasaa kar nahi la saka"

All men's souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine. Socrates

    Scarcity vs Technology

No matter where we go and to whom we talk to in terms of Business or MBA everyone says that

there is a law of demand and supply and above all resources are 'SCARCE'.

If one looks at the dictionary meaning of scarce it says, Insufficient to meet a demand or

requirement. Now this brings to me to a question that if a resource is scarce, i.e. Insufficient to

meet a particular demand then why are we using it, which exactly is my arguement.

Today we see technology all over from a pen to an aircraft. If we are so much technology driven

and we say that this is our solution to every problem we face in our life, then why it fails to

eradicate the word scarcity from our so called dictionaries. Why technology isn't able to change the

slopes of demand and supply for every product we use? Or are we unwilling to do so, intentionally,

as we see the equation, scarcity is directly proportional to profits an organisation makes. The more

    the scarcity more the profits.

All these arguments and what I see make me believe that either we are too much profit oriented as

organisations and capitalism not only runs in our societies but also has occupied our brains. Another

thought that intrigues me is that is technology eating away all our resources and making them

    'scarce'.

If the first argument is correct then our basic societal structure needs to be questioned and if the

latter is true, then technology is our best evil friend.

I was born just like any other human being with equal rights, privilege and share on everything that

the mother nature has in store for us, then why there is an inequity when it comes to distribution of

these resources. If mother nature gave us something without charging anything, then why there is aprice tag on everything. Moreover who appointed these middlemen who put these pricetags.

I think the answer lies in the word scarcity itself, as if everything was lying in abundance just like

air and water there would be no scarcity. And hence the magical equation of economics that supply

is greater than demand for all products will be achieved. The only question is does technology has

the answer to this?, If Yes, then when??
