3 Managing Practicing and Exams in Exam Module

Exam Module is a web-based education solution. It is a platform-independent server-side applicationto support Exam Module training sessions:

• Instructors can upload question sets to give students the possibility to practice.

• Any number of students can take the exam.

• Cheating, for example by completing the exam twice, is virtually impossible.

• Submitted exams are automatically evaluated. The software scores single/multiple choice questions; instructors only need to score the open-ended questions manually.

The administrator's surface of Exam Module can be accessed through the <serveraddress>/esadmin address. Enter your account login credentials (Login name and Password) on the Login screen, and click Login to access the server.

Pannoramic Exam Module 2.1 Administrator’s Guide 3.1 Question Types

3.1 Question Types

The Practice/Exam sessions of Exam Module supports three different question types:

• Single answer (there is only one correct answer)

• Multiple answer (there are several possible answers)

• Textual (open-ended questions)

You can use graphic files and linked digital slides in your material. For example, your question can beabout a Pannoramic slide or an annotation on it.

You can also set up a question so that the students have to mark the answer on the Pannoramic slide:they can create a picture of any part of the slide with the camera icon on the main navigator area ofPannoramic Viewer, appearing only when the specific slide was opened from an exam sheet.Students can then draw on the exported picture and upload it to the Exam server with PannoramicViewer.

3.2 Topics and Question Database in Pannoramic Exam Module

The Exam server uses a database for topics and questions that can be included in practicing or examsessions. This makes it possible for you to combine topics and questions freely and to include them indifferent practice or exam sheets. Furthermore, you can define questions and answers in differentlanguages.

Warning!

You need to double-check the language settings before you launch an exam: if youenable a language for an exam but not all questions have a version in thatlanguage, the students will see an empty question and would not have a chanceto score on the question.

3.3 Scoring Schemes and Automatic Answer Evaluation

Exam Module automatically evaluates the answers to close-ended questions. If needed, you candefine a different scoring scheme for each question. Keep in mind the following:

• Correct answers must be scored with positive numbers, incorrect answers can be marked with zero or with negative numbers.

• You have to mark all correct and incorrect answers with a score.

• Exam Module sums the scores. If the sum is zero or less, the score on the question is zero. If the sum is greater than zero, the sum is the score on the question.

Page 19: Pannoramic Exam Module 2.1 Administrator's Guide · Pannoramic Exam Module 2.1 Administrator’s Guide Font Types and Symbols Font Types and Symbols Example Words or characters that

Pannoramic Exam Module 2.1 Administrator’s Guide 3.3 Scoring Schemes and Automatic Answer Evaluation

Example 1

In the simplest of the cases, only one answer is correct all the others are incorrect. Set the score ofthe correct answer to a positive number, the score of the false answers to zero or to a negativenumber. Students who select the correct answer get the score that you set for the answer, studentswho select the incorrect answers get zero points.

Example 2

You can penalize guessing by making sure that marking incorrect answers in a multiple-choicequestion deducts more points from the sum than what they get for the correct ones.

If you have a question with 10 answers (6 incorrect, 4 correct), give +1 points for each correct answerand -1 (or even -4) for each incorrect answer. Only those students will get the maximum score (4)who selected all and only the correct answers, students who selected one or more false answers aswell will lose points even if they selected the four correct answers as well. Since the worse scorestudents can get on this question is 0, penalizing guessing on this question does not penalize guesserson other questions.

Example 3

For open-ended questions, set only a maximum score as a guidance to evaluators who will have toscore these questions manually.

3.4 Anti-Cheating Features of Pannoramic Exam Module

Questions and answers are randomized when the practice or exam session starts:

Students cannot read off the correct answer from each others' screens because the questions and theanswers to the questions are presented in different order on their screens. Randomization does nothave an impact on the automatic evaluation of non-open-ended questions.

Retaking an exam generates two sets of scores:

If a student tries to retake an exam, two exam results will be generated. The student's ID and the timestamp of the exam's date will be visible in both results. Instructors can check the time stamp andignore the earlier attempts.

Documents are saved:

Completed exams are uploaded into a database, from where they can be deleted with directdatabase access. In the everyday practice, even Administrators cannot delete them.

Input fields edited by the examinee (including submitted images, if there is any) are automaticallysaved in every 20 seconds.

By logging in again (for example, after restarting the PC or browser), the examinee can continue theexamination with the completed data corresponding to the last backup.
