  • 2.1.1. Leakage Current Cold Check

    1. Unplug the AC cord and connect a jumper between the twoprongs on the plug.

    2. Measure the resistance value, with an ohmmeter, betweenthe jumpered AC plug and each exposed metallic cabinetpart on the equipment such as screwheads, connectors,control shafts, etc. When the exposed metallic part has areturn path to the chassis, the reading should be between1M and 5.2M.When the exposed metal does not have a return path to

    the chassis, the reading must be .

    2.1.2. Leakage Current Hot Check (SeeFigure 1.)

    1. Plug the AC cord directly into the AC outlet. Do not use anisolation transformer for this check.

    2. Connect a 1.5k, 10 watts resistor, in parallel with a 0.15Fcapacitors, between each exposed metallic part on the setand a good earth ground such as a water pipe, as shown inFigure 1.

    3. Use an AC voltmeter, with 1000 ohms/volt or moresensitivity, to measure the potential across the resistor.

    4. Check each exposed metallic part, and measure thevoltage at each point.

    5. Reverse the AC plug in the AC outlet and repeat each of theabove measurements.

    6. The potential at any point should not exceed 0.75 voltsRMS. A leakage current tester (Simpson Model 229 orequivalent) may be used to make the hot checks, leakagecurrent must not exceed 1/2 milliamp. In case ameasurement is outside of the limits specified, there is apossibility of a shock hazard, and the equipment should berepaired and rechecked before it is returned to thecustomer.

    2 Safety Precautions2.1. General Guidelines 1. When servicing, observe the original lead dress. If a short circuit is found, replace all parts which have been overheated or

    damaged by the short circuit.

    2. After servicing, see to it that all the protective devices such as insulation barriers, insulation papers shields are properlyinstalled.

    3. After servicing, make the following leakage current checks to prevent the customer from being exposed to shock hazards.

  • 3 Prevention of Electro Static Discharge (ESD) toElectrostatically Sensitive (ES) Devices

    Some semiconductor (solid state) devices can be damaged easily by static electricity. Such components commonly are calledElectrostatically Sensitive (ES) Devices. Examples of typical ES devices are integrated circuits and some field-effect transistors andsemiconductor "chip" components. The following techniques should be used to help reduce the incidence of component damagecaused by electro static discharge (ESD).

    1. Immediately before handling any semiconductor component or semiconductor-equipped assembly, drain off any ESD on yourbody by touching a known earth ground. Alternatively, obtain and wear a commercially available discharging ESD wrist strap,which should be removed for potential shock reasons prior to applying power to the unit under test.

    2. After removing an electrical assembly equipped with ES devices, place the assembly on a conductive surface such as alminumfoil, to prevent electrostatic charge buildup or exposure of the assembly.

    3. Use only a grounded-tip soldering iron to solder or unsolder ES devices.

    4. Use only an anti-static solder removal device. Some solder removal devices not classified as "anti-static (ESD protected)" cangenerate electrical charge sufficient to damage ES devices.

    5. Do not use freon-propelled chemicals. These can generate electrical charges sufficient to damage ES devices.

    6. Do not remove a replacement ES device from its protective package until immediately before you are ready to install it. (Mostreplacement ES devices are packaged with leads electrically shorted together by conductive foam, alminum foil or comparableconductive material).

    7. Immediately before removing the protective material from the leads of a replacement ES device, touch the protective materialto the chassis or circuit assembly into which the device will be installed.

    Caution

    Be sure no power is applied to the chassis or circuit, and observe all other safety precautions.

    8. Minimize bodily motions when handling unpackaged replacement ES devices. (Otherwise hamless motion such as the brushingtogether of your clothes fabric or the lifting of your foot from a carpeted floor can generate static electricity (ESD) sufficient todamage an ES device).

  • 4 About lead free solder (PbF)Note: Lead is listed as (Pb) in the periodic table of elements.

    In the information below, Pb will refer to Lead solder, and PbF will refer to Lead Free Solder.

    The Lead Free Solder used in our manufacturing process and discussed below is (Sn+Ag+Cu).

    That is Tin (Sn), Silver (Ag) and Copper (Cu) although other types are available.

    This model uses Pb Free solder in its manufacture due to environmental conservation issues. For service and repair work, wedsuggest the use of Pb free solder as well, although Pb solder may be used.

    PCBs manufactured using lead free solder will have the PbF within a leaf Symbol stamped on the back of PCB.

    Caution

    Pb free solder has a higher melting point than standard solder. Typically the melting point is 50 ~ 70 F (30~40 C) higher.Please use a high temperature soldering iron and set it to 700 20 F (370 10 C).

    Pb free solder will tend to splash when heated too high (about 1100 F or 600 C).

    If you must use Pb solder, please completely remove all of the Pb free solder on the pins or solder area before applying Pbsolder. If this is not practical, be sure to heat the Pb free solder until it melts, before applying Pb solder.

    After applying PbF solder to double layered boards, please check the component side for excess solder which may flow ontothe opposite side. (see figure below)

    Suggested Pb free solder

    There are several kinds of Pb free solder available for purchase. This product uses Sn+Ag+Cu (tin, silver, copper) solder.However, Sn+Cu (tin, copper), Sn+Zn+Bi (tin, zinc, bismuth) solder can also be used.

  • Prior to the replacement, place the unit on the pedestalstand remove the front frame.

    7.1. Removal of the back covera. Unscrew the screws (16 , 6 , 4 ) and remove theback cover.

    7.2. Removal of the Slot blocka. Unscrew the couplers (J1, J3, J5, J6, J8, J10).

    b. Unscrew the screws (4) and remove the slot block.

    7.3. Removal of the J-Boarda. Unscrew the screws (7) and remote the J-Board.

    7.4. Removal of the HX-Boarda. Unscrew the screws (6) and remove the slot case.

    b. Unscrew the screws (4).

    c. Unscrew the screws (2) and remove the HX-Board.

  • 7.5. Removal of the P-Boarda. Remove the couplers (P2, P5, P7, P9, P10, P11, P12, P23,P25, P27).

    b. Unscrew the screws (5) and remove the P-Board.

    7.6. Removal of the Z-Boarda. Remove the couplers (Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8).

    b. Unscrew the screws (4 ) and remove the Z-Board withthe Z-Board Bracket.

    c. Unscrew the screws (4 ) and remove the Z-Board.

    7.7. Removal of the D-Boarda. Disconnect the couplers (D1, D3, D5, D25, D27) and theflexible cables (D31, D32).

    b. Remove the shield cuse.

    c. Unscrew the screws (6) and remove the D-Board.

    b. Unscrew the screws (2) and remove the AC inlet.

    c. Remove the couplers (PF9, PF10).

    d. Unscrew the screws (4), and remove the PF-Board.

    7.9. Removal of the H3-Boarda. Unscrew the screws (2 ), and remove the H3-Boardwith the Bracket.

    b. Unscrew the screws (4 ), and remove the H3-Board.

    7.10. Removal of the SU-Boarda. Unscrew the screws (2).

    b. Slide the SU-Board to the left and disconnect from thecouplers (SC41) on the SC-Board.

    c. Remove the coupler (SU45).

    d. Remove the flexible cables (SU1, SU2, SU3) connected tothe SU-Board, and remove the SU-Board.

    7.11. Removal of the SD-Boarda. Unscrew the screws (2).

    b. Slide the SD-Board to the left and disconnect from thecouplers (SC42) on the SC-Board.

    c. Remove the coupler (SD46).

    d. Remove the flexible cables (SD1, SD2, SD3) connected tothe SD-Board, and remove the SD-Board.

  • 7.12. Removal of the SC-Boarda. Remove the couplers (SC2, SC20, SC23, SC45, SC46).

    Unscrew the screws (6) and remove the SC-Board.

    7.13. Removal of the SS-Boarda. Remove the couplers (SS11, SS12, SS23, SS34).

    b. Remove the flexible cables (SS41, SS42, SS43, SS44).

    c. Unscrew the screws (6), and remove the SS-Board.

    7.14. Removal of the C1-Boarda. Remove the flexible cables (CB1, CB2, CB3).

    b. Remove the flexible cables (C11, C12) release the speakercables from the clampers (2) on the C1-Board.

    c. Unscrew the screws (4), and remove the C1-Board.

    7.15. Removal of the C2-Boarda. Remove the cables (CB4, CB5, CB6, CB7).

    b. Remove the couplers (C23, C24), a flexible cable (C21) andrelease the speaker cables from the clamper on the C2-Board.

    c. Unscrew the screws (4), and remove the C2-Board.

    7.16. Removal of the Front frame(glass)

    a. Remove the screws (2) fasten on the panel and remove thefront panel.

  • b. Release all cables from the clamper on the bracket of thefront frame.

    c. For leaving the plasma panel from the front frame, pull thebottom of the front frame to forward, lift, and remove.

    7.17. Removal of stand bracketsa. Remove the plasma panel section from the servicing standand lay on a table (covered), with the plasma panel surfacefacing downward.

    Spread a soft cloth for protection, to prevent panel surface fromscratching.

    b. Remove the stand bracket (left, right) fastening screws (4each) and remove the stand brackets (left, right).

    7.18. Replacement of the plasmapanel

    a. Place the new plasma panel (finished) on the flat surface ofthe table (covered by a soft cloth), with the plasma panelsurface facing downward.

    b. Fit the stand brackets (left, right.) fast 4 screws each on thenew plasma panel.

    c. Place the plasma panel section on the servicing stand.

    d. Attach the front frame each P.C.Board and so on, to the newplasma panel.

    * When fitting the front frame, be careful not to allow anydebris, dust or handling residues to remain between thefront glass and plasma panel.
