Ondoy Sendong Pablo Quinta Tese namesreally sound amiliar, right? Since December o 2011, thepeople o Mindanao have come ace to ace to these BIG 4typhoons that exaggeratedly ruined everybodys excitementsabout the Christmas season. But instead o just sulking inone corner and idling or what has happened, the ve annualconerences rom the Davao Episcopal Area starting withthe BPPAC, VPAC, EMPAC, NWMPAC and MinPACbecame one in heart and in spirit as they wholeheartedlyprayed, prepared and organize the rst ever event that

would gather the Young leaders rom Visayas and Mindanaoto celebrate the aithulness o our Lord and to share the loveo the Christmas spirit to others.

We were getting ready or our travel bound toLeyte, waiting or the bus to arrive when the skies o Davaostarted to get dim, the clouds seemed to be angry andheavy raindrops ell to the dry and dusty concrete grounds, accompanied by strong winds and ashes o lightning. Someo us never cared o how bad the weather is and continuedplaying, some were already tired o waiting, and others wereseated calmly and patiently, but me? I was really scaredand worried already, and thoughts o pessimism plus the

Four years have passed since the First Young Peoples Address washeard in the Philippines Central Conerence session. Since then, how

have we viewed, supported, and discipled our young people?

We go a long way because o our ideals, dynamism and ourstrengths. We ound courage in our weaknesses and we are challenged topursue new and innovative ministries. We continue to dream because it iswhere we look or opportunities and ulll them.

We embrace our diversity because we nd ways or acceptance andunity. We strengthen our commitment and aith because they keep us asone amily. We are the young people o the United Methodist ChurchCHARGED. ROOED. UNIED.

    CHARGED!

    UMYFP

Te United Methodist Youth Fellowship in the Philippines is

charged with a supreme task, o know Christ and make Him known.

We believe that Christ has been made known in the lives o theyoung people through our various innovative programs: our campusministry (PP: Student Methodist Active in Campus Kirk), music andsongwriting competition (PP: Awit Kay Yahweh), literature (PP:Pananaw Newsletter, and Pananaw Literary Award, CI Bible Studymaterials), workshops in social media (PP: Te World [Wide Web] is myParish), and outreach (PP: Out-o-School Youth community outreach).

We recognize that we are all pilgrims in this journey o makingdisciples. Some could oer energy and idealism; some could oer wisdomand experience. We ask you, those who have walked ahead o us, to pavethe way or the young people o our church to be in the leadership, and towork hand-in-hand with us in engaging the world.

Some o the literatures and programs available or the use o

young peoples ministries are either borrowed or adopted rom dierenministries and denominations. It saddens us that some o our youthprimarily looks or resources outside o our church because they thinkthat those are more eective and cool. Tis is one reason why someyoung people dri rom our Wesleyan identity.

A lot o our youth get involved with the discipleship programso other churches and para-church organizations. Tey are hungry ordiscipleship and meaningul, Christian relationships. In the end, whenthey graduate rom College or they start working, they decide to leave theUMC and join these groups.

We uphold our doctrines as members o the United MethodistChurch, as Wesleyans, and as Christians. Lead us back to our traditions,to our heritage. Patronize what is truly oursemphasis on mission,

prayer, asting, holiness, small accountability groups, and works o theHoly Spirit to name a ew. Our church, we believe, is overowing withresource materials, resource persons, and programs that could empowerour disciple-making task. But we need a united eort to do it!

    UMYAFP

Some think that young adults is the missing generation o thechurch. rue enough, we seem to be more ocused in establishing ourcareers and building our amilies, yet we dont lose our hope in our church.

We long or a church that caters to the holistic needs o the amily.I the amily is the basic unit o the society, then the amily should be thebasic unit o our ministries. Let us walk back through our memoriesSusana Wesley devoted her lie or intentional discipleship o her childrenand Samuel Wesley took pride and supported in the accomplishments and

endeavors o their children. Teir amily wasnt perect. Yet they modeledor us a amily worth emulating. We long or a church that parent us tobecome truly Christians. As we build our own amilies, we want to raiseour children in a community o aith that is inclusive in its ministries, work and leisure.

We believethat we need aspark to light usand turn us intoa re, and thenwe would seea vital churchbecause the youngpeople have risen;and we are backwith passionand enthusiasm. We want to berooted in aith sothat nothing canuproot us romour heritage.

Lead us. Re-learn with us. ogether, let us reclaim our Wesleyanheritage and traditions. We want a church that is: CHARGED. ROOED.UNIED.

    UNITED!

UMYFPUnited is a word we really cannot detach ourselves rom. Being the

people o the United Methodist Church, we should live up to the nameour church has adopted. More so, being Christians, we are united by thelove that the God reely gavethat is Christ Jesus.

We recognize unity in diversity. Tough the youth and the youngadults may be dierent, their avenues where we come together to moveorward programs and ministries. We have been partnering togetherin advocacies like promoting awareness on HIV and AIDS, election oyoung people to the Central Conerence session, and nurturing youngpeople through mentorship programs. We have joined hands in reachingout to our Out-o-School youth and indigenous people through the

    Caravan Mission program.

We are aware o what our church has gone through in the past ewyearswe have been divided in our opinions, principles, and ideals. Somle. Some stayed. Some were accommodated. We were conused. We werehurt.

We asked ourselves, Is this the kind o church that we will inheritIs this the kind o church that we want to disciple us?

Many questions remain in our minds, in our hearts. We may nohave the answers. But this we know and believeour church has to movorward. And we, the young people o the church, have a big role to play

We pulled the young peoples composure together, held prayerallies, organized uniying camps/institutes, and several orums. We wereas Romans 12:12 put it best, joyul in hope, patient in aiction, andaithul in prayer. We are united in knowing Christ. We are united withthe same passion to make disciples.

We believe in the process o connecting with people, planting seedo Biblical oundations, equipping or the ministry, and empoweringto make Christ known. Hundreds o thousands o people have not ye

experienced lie with Christ. As a church, let us extend our arms wider toembrace people rom all walks o lie; let us be agents o transormation inthe world one act o kindness at a time.

Tese are the things that are worth more o our time, resourcesand eort. Tese are the issues we need to talk about in our church

meetings, in sociamedia threadsand in our dailyc o n v e r s a t i o nwith eachother. Let us beaccountable toeach other. Leus work joyully

together. Let ustop buildingwalls within usInstead, let ubreak them down

    Tese arethe things tha

really matter. We know, and so we believe. We believe, and so we musact. We must act, so that our united eorts may positively transorm ouworld.

    UMYAFP

oday, we desire humble hearts. oday, we celebrate all thetriumphs, our renewed strength and our readiness to soar higher. oday

we conclude all the challenges we painstakingly overcame or the pasour years. oday, we will create new beginnings and new eorts orreconciliation and unity. oday, we celebrate our revival.

All o us should untiringly take part in the continued transormationo our church as we ace the challenges o our time. As one body withmany parts, may we all nd our signicant places in the church, runningthe race marked out beore us. We call or genuine unity. We uphold theaith that stands through all circumstances. We afrm our aith throughthe United Methodist Church.

WE ARE CHARGED, ROOTED, and UNITED!

Say it with us, we are charged, rooted, and united!

Acts 1:1-3 (NIV)Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven

1 In my ormer book, Teophilus, I wrote about all thatJesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken upto heaven, aer giving instructions through the Holy Spirit tothe apostles he had chosen. 3 Aer his sufering, he presentedhimsel to them and gave many convincing proos that he wasalive. He appeared to them over a period o orty days andspoke about the kingdom o God.

Our God is a very thoughtul God. Right? He certainlygives instructions to His people. He delivers them in theright time, in the place and in the right situation. My mentortold me to start my devotion in reading the book o Actswhere there are a lot o teachings and thoughts rom Jesus. When I started reading it, there was a rhema (( inGreek) literally means an utterance or thing said inGreek. It is a word that signies the action o utterance)out o it. Rhema means when you say or read a word, itsignies an action about it. It touches my heart, mind andsoul. My unpredictable lie was lled with the purpose oGod when I started reading the book o Acts.

From Acts 1:1-3, God gave me 3 asks. Excitingly, I wasurged to make notes on this to make stories and testimoniesout o it. Here are the 3 asks. Tese tasks were not based onthe whole thought o the

Task #1: TO DO AND TO TEACH

I was instructed by God to do and to teach the gospelto everyone around me.

As a Christian, a ully devoted believer, we must dosomething! I you believe, say so! Do something that Godwould appreciate, that God will smile at you and wills say

I was waiting or you to do that. Good job! He is waitingor you to say that you are about to do these things or Godsglory.

Everything that you do is to see God, to eel God and toexperience God. Do it now!

Te gospel o God is not just or you. Dont just keep iton your mind but teach other people how God teaches you.Trough teaching the word o God, the great commissionis being ullled. Te promises o God have been shared.Your lie is a living testimony. Your lie is also a teachingto other people.

Task #2: BE INSTRUCTED THROUGH THE HOLY

    SPIRIT

Te Holy Spirit is working to people who acceptedJesus Christ as their Savior. Aer God descent to heaven, Hegave us His Holy Spirit to guide us; to give us hope, peacejoy, happiness, and everything according to Gods will in ourlives. He told us that He would never leave us nor orsakeus. He promises that He will bless us each day we need HimTe Holy Spirit gives us everything that we need may keepus victorious and will overcome the evil with good deeds

Let the Holy Spirit make us as the salt and light o the worldBe the setter o our hearts. Be the strength o our minds. Bethe savior o our souls.

    Task #3: DO THE TASK #1 & #2 AND IN 40 DAYS

SPEAK ABOUT THE KINGDOM OF GOD

Are we talking about being a Pastor here? HahahaYeah! A shepherd to the sheep.

I really want to be a worship pastor but I was thenthinking about that I dont know what to do. It was veryunpredictable to me how am I going to do Gods missions iI do not have any idea on how to. It was ridiculous! But God

wasnt nish yet. He makes dierence every single day. SinceI started reading Acts, I was thinking, My lie will never bethe same again! Tat was what my mentor told me.

Yes, in 40 days, I will be reading the book o ActsFinding out what God wants me to do even i it is limited to40 days. But it is not done aer 40 days; it will be a start osaying my lie will never be the same again!

On a 40 days journey with God, let the Holy Spiritworks, May Jesus Christ be our redeemer and riend, andmay God be gloried. Join me, lets read the word o Goddo and teach it, be instructed by the Holy Spirit and let

40 days journey be a ullling one. continue to page12

Te Christmas Institute Teme or 2012 is Soak inChrist. rue enough, it is a topic which needs in depthexplanation, but let us tackle it in its most basic sense. Whenwe hear the word SOAK, Im sure it reminds you o water, ormaybe your laundry. Webster dened SOAK as to saturatewith liquid or to wet thoroughly. But obviously, the termSOAK in this context denitely means deeper than that.

Soaking and Soaking in Christ are two totally dierenteats. Soaking is an expressive term depicting a spiritual, emotional and physical position that we place ourselves

in to spend time with our most high God. Tis is the timewhen we calm our souls rom the hurly burly business olie and allow the Lord to soen our hearts with His Love.Soaking in Gods Presence is like putting ourselves on Godsdivine operating table, wherein He puts us under anesthesia, leaving total control to Him as He carries out operationsthat only He can perorm. Soaking is a momentary act, butsoaking in Christ is a lietime commitment.

Te truth is, it is not hard to do SOAKING. Its justthat we have this human nature that we nd it very difcultto just stop what we are doing and allow God to producein us what only He can produce. Oentimes, we associate

productivity with our own hard work and eort and thatswhere we are wrong because God has a totally dierentperspective. We need to realize that time spent with Godis time well spent. In other words, time with God is never awasted time. Te ruit o establishing this trust relationshipwith God and letting Him take control as we enter into Hisrest is rue Peace. It is just like the nal line o my Awit KayYahweh entry, ang tunay na kapayapaay nagsisimula saPUSO, which means, true peace begins when our anxioushearts plagued with several, dierent voices are hushed bythe Prince o Peace when we devote our time or soaking.

Te key word to SOAKING IN CHRIS is REMAIN.Tis is where John 15:4 comes in. Remain in me and I willremain in you. No branch can bear ruit by itsel, it mustremain with the vine. Neither can you bear ruit unless

Soak in Christ:A Lifetime Routineby Teresa Eleanor L. Paano, NWMPAC

you remain in me. Guilty as charged, most o us remain inChrist only on Sunday. A very ew number remain in Chrisduring weekdays. Do you know what Jesus wants? He wantsus to remain in Him like a branch remains in a vine. Tisrelationship is inseparable. Remain in Jesus Christ ALWAYSnot sometimes, not only when you are ree, not only whenyou are in the mood, not only when youre alone in yourroom and denitely not only in good times. Te momentyou separate rom the vine, you will wither.

Remaining in Christ doesnt require you to always lock

yoursel in your room and pray in solitude. At the sametime, when you keep saying Praise the Lord or Hallelujahand keep yoursel away rom everyone, it doesnt mean youare remaining in Christ. Although it is healthy to spendsome time alone, have some quiet time, to pray, meditateand talk to Him, we cannot avoid our amily and social lie.O course, we need to earn to live, go to school and acepeople as part o our day to day routine. But thats where theact o remaining in Christ can be best practiced; that eveni you are busy with the daily demands o lie, we will notorget God in our hearts, let others maniest that we earthe Lord, do our best to live a lie o conscientious walk and

never permitting the enemy to control us. Difcult? Welheres an easier way to remain in Christ. Just ollow the threesimple rules: Do good, do not harm, and stay inlove withGod despite the hustle-bustle o our everyday living.

I you want to experience Gods miracle in your livesstay with the vine. I you want to be productive, ruitul anduseul, stay with the vine. I you want to grow and maturestay with the vine. Remember that Jesus warned us, Everybranch in me that beareth not ruit he [the Gardener]taketh away ... I a man abide not in me, he is cast orth asa branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast

them into the re, and they are burned (John 15:2, 6). Yesthe act o remaining in Christ is easier said than done, butthe consequences o not abiding in him are more difcultthan you could imagine. So which do you preer? Facing thechallenge and undergoing the complex process o soakingin Christ, or enduring the very complicated consequencesor not being soaked in Him? God already provided theoptions; its up to you to decide. And i you choose the rstoption, dont just soak in Christ in selected days; exercisesoaking in Christ daily; or better yet, make soaking in Chrisa lietime routine.

Its February! Its love month, they say. Yes Im sureyoure starting to see heart cutouts and cupid imageseverywhere. Its that time o the year again mostawaitedby couples and abhorred by singles, especially on the 14thday. And Im pretty sure you have some plans or that daytoo, be it having a romantic date with your special someone,or having a party with your single riends in celebration orthe singleawareness day. But people just cant see the realpicture. Teres more to this month than that.

Since its the socalled love month, then lets talkabove LOVE. What else tickles the insides, makes the

system alert and catches your attention other than LOVE?However, I do not mean to burst your bubbles because youmight be expecting something that tackles love, courtshipand marriage. Yes, we will be talking about relationships, but its a dierent kind o relationship, something that isextraordinary, something that is REAL.

February might be the month o hearts, but it doesnot only ocus on the supercial, human love. We ail torecognize that there is this one special person who needsour love and attention more than anyone else. We are toobusy thinking about what to give to our mates and how to

celebrate it that we neglect the one who started it all, theauthor o true love and romance. And i Im not making ittoo obvious, yes, I am talking about God.

Let us not orget that we learned to love because Herst loved us (1 John 4:19). Tat is why it is just appropriatethat we return the avour. Ten again, its got to be morethan that. Our relationship with God must be more thanjust returning the avour; it must be heartelt and genuine. It must not be a kind o relationship that exists only in timeso trials and hardships; but a relationship that exists 24/7. Itmust be an unbreakable, intimate bond that is not simplydisconnected by discouragement and rustrations, when

things do not go as expected or planned.Having a relationship with God is essential in our lives.

Our human relationships may end, but our relationship withGod knows no bounds. Let me take romantic relationshipsas an example. In our society today, it is undeniable that thereis almost no assurance on how long romantic relationshipswill last. In act, I know a lot o partners who call it quitsaer just one week; or a sadder act is that some partnerswhohave been together or 8 years decide to part ways. But dontbe aected by these acts because theres good news.

2013 great opportunities! Our testimony goes thisway, 2012 was also a great year or us pero parang kulang padin, madami pa ding nagdaan na trials. We really planned togo to Aldersgate Renewal 2013. Nanghiram pa nga kami ngpang-registration kasi wala pa yung expected salary naminsa last job namin. December 27, we received our salary sonakabayad kami ng mga nahiram namin. Ten may kauntingnatira para baunin sa Aldersgate. When Pastor Jose Zabartegave his testimony about tithes/oering eto ang tumatak saisip ko, when we give our oering to God always give thebest, so nag-isip ako I have 500 peso bill in my wallet and300.00, I asked God to guide me how much I am going togive beacause I am not a real giver to, my mind tells mesayang kung yung 500 ang ibibigay ko but my heart tellsme to give the best. I started praying, saying thank you and

bless my oering. So I gave the best amount I have. Binigayko yun ng walang regrets and I never expect ng whateverna kapalit. I went home with nothing le in my wallet but,I didnt worry. January 7, two days aer Aldersgate, mysupervisor called and told me to get my check at hindi padaw namin nakuha yung training allowance namin na angalam namin nakuha na namin lahat last Dec.27. Te nextday yung isang supervisor ko tumawag sinabing my projectdaw kmi. Agad-agad another blessing ang dumating. Godreally has in stored something or us, kailangan lang natinsabayan ng galaw. God will always provide or us.

It is my rst time to attend the Aldersgate RenewalMy churchmates asked me i I could come and I said yesMag-iisponsor ang church namin ng delegates pero 5 slotslang. So it means, I need to pay ormy registration. Tat time, we are nancially insufcientMaraming gastos pero walang income kasi bakasyon ngaWala naman akong mahanapang sponsor. Pero kampanteako na makasasama ako. Aer our BS during CI, I went toeacher Aimee to have a small conversation. Later on, shetold me that my churchmate is giving up her slot or thesponsorship and she wants me to take it. I cried and thankedGod or He made a way.

Kasi natutuwa Siya sa ginagawa mo.continue to page12

our numbers increased then I have remembered whatPastor Jez mentioned when we have our morning devotionat the Port that, its not the quantity, its the quality o praiseand your heart that counts. It was really incredible and the

room now was ull o young people with hearts that singsongs o grateulness, ready to learn and eager to strengthenone another and show love and compassion to those whoneeds it. By this, we need to prepare to SOAK in CHRIS. Itmay look so simple and can be understood totally withoutany urther explanations, but honestly being ully soakedcan be harder than what we have imagined. Every nightwe evaluate our program till dawn, just to make sure thedelegates were serious and matured enough to understandand grasp the essence o each activity. Assessments o eachactivity were done and reasonable response a n daction to the listed observations were done with the help and

guidance o the One who Created us, and all the experiencesthat we have encountered surely marked our hearts andtaught us the lessons that cannot be taken away easily. Wenurture ourselves spiritually, were guided by the supportivegroup o clergy and lay people who made eort in increasingour comprehension and intensiying our relationship withone another and most especially with Jesus.

Tis Christmas Institute really made us super soakedin Christ, spiritually and physically! Te participation o therain during the SOAK 3 Night helped us to appreciate theexperience o being blessed and anointed by God. Loud criesand rising praises surely reached the heavens that moment, hearts opened and wounds were healed, burdens lightenedand commitment was renewed to every young people whowanted to serve the Lord through their own special gi. Atthat time, I know that God is very well pleased!

Overwhelmed by the events that has happenedduring the 3-day Christmas Institute, I still wish that wehave longer time to share stories and experiences, buildrelationship to one another. Well, God still plans or greaterthings and I know that the DEA-WIDE events have justbegun. In His perect timing the ve annual conerences willbe meeting again so, this cant be the last!

status... rom page 8Our relationship with God has no breakups! Even

beore we decide to build a relationship with Him, He alreadyhas a relationship with us. He has no plans o letting us goin act, during those times we eel like He is driing apart,

we are the ones letting go o Him. In human relationshipswe cannot simply ask our partners to restart aer a breakup, but with God we can go back to Him anytime and He isthere waiting with arms wide open.

A relationship with God is a relationship like noother. It is a special kind o connection that only God andGod alone can provide. Whether we admit it or not, humansare created to limited. Yes we can make our loved ones happytry our best to give them what they need, spend quality timewith them, come to their rescue when they need help andbe there or them when they need comort; but human aswe are, we arent perect. We are not superman, and even

superman cannot do everything. Humans are limited; butour God is limitless. When we have a relationship with HimHe is willing to give us not only our needs, but even ourtrivial wants (Psalms 37:4). He will show you what gracelooks like. Youll be amazed.

But just like human relationships, God wants amutual understanding. Yes, He will never get tired o lovingus and connecting with us; but He also wants us to eel thesame or Him, to value Him more than we value our lie andto love Him more than we love our loved ones and ourselvesWe know how it eels to have a onesided love aair right? And our tendency is we just give up and move on. Howeverit is nothing compared to our Father in heaven who has alot o one sided love aairs in the world yet He never givesup on us. He patiently waits or the day that we give ourhearts to Him, no matter how long it takes. You see, thatshow great His love is or us.

Im not saying we orget all our human relationshipsI am saying that it is about time that we build or rebuildour relationship with God. Having a relationship with Himwill surely change our lie and make us eel pure joy that wecannot experience in supercial human relationships. Hecan ll the emptiness within us and gratiy the longing o

our souls. Human relationships can disappoint us, but Godnever will; in act, once we establish this bond with HimHe will then work wonders in our relationship with othersUntil we are satised with the relationship we have with Godonly then can we be satised in our human relationshipsBecome intimate with the lover o your soul. Aim to get thisrelationship right beore pursuing another.

Sound system (mics and dalawang speaker) provided

pero walang drumset, LCD projector, at keyboards. Unangaraw pa lang nagspecial meeting na or troubleshooting.Resolving the problem was the peg or the day. Good thing,we were able to get the things we need rom the concernedPAC churches (Central, Knox and Makati UMC). 1st truth:GOD PROVIDES. DON WORRY ABOU ANYHING.

Tough may mga pagsubok na katulad nito, hindinaman nagsuer ang quality ng mga activities or the day.

BE HANKFUL!

Tird day, ang mahabang piring. Bible study at trustwalk.

Pero overall, its a thumbs up na rinHindi naman natin masusukat ang pagtanggap ng tao sapamamagitan ng kanilang mga iyak o sigaw e. 3rd truthMAN LOOK A HE OUSIDE APPEARANCE BUGOD LOOKS A HE HEAR. ONLY GOD KNOWS.

Na-amaze talaga kami nun! 4th truth: GOD IS IN CONROLLEARN O RUS.

And lastly, the 5th day.

Love the Lord your

God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all yourmind. Ten love your neighbour as yoursel. Simple langPAGIBIG.

In short, WAGAS at DALISAY.
