Reopening Palma School 2020-21 School Year July 2, 2020 Dear People of Palma, We are pleased to provide you the latest draft of our plans for reopening campus next month. We will continue to refine these plans as needed or required. We are excited to have our students at Palma again and want to do our best to maintain a healthy and safe environment when they return in August. Everyone’s help is needed as we strive to keep safe our students, personnel, and guests. Thank you to those who participated in our surveys and focus groups to share your insights as we formulated our plans. Here are the most prevalent discussion points we heard from you: • maintain connection and community • ensure rigor and engagement • create more opportunities for individual help / meeting time with teachers • athletics and extracurricular activities are important • technical concerns/difficulties have sometimes posed a challenge • health and safety must be prioritized, and • gratitude for the structured distance learning experience this past spring. With these points in mind, we have been working to create various schedules aligned to three (3) options, each of which allows us to provide a rigorous college-prep education and to challenge our boys of promise as they mature to men of character. Regardless of which option we announce in August, we expect that everyone on campus will need to: • be symptom free and to cooperate with temperature checks • wear appropriate face masks • maintain physical distance, and • adhere to all local protocols regarding health and safety. For every option provided, athletic activities will be determined according to CIF, CCS, and PCAL requirements.

Reopening Palma School 2020-21 School Year

July 2, 2020

Dear People of Palma,

We are pleased to provide you the latest draft of our plans for reopening campus next month.

OPTION #1: Traditional Schedule On campus learning; classes resume as usual. Orientations/assemblies modified minimally. Bell Schedule is generally 8:30am–2:35pm, daily. The traditional schedule is enclosed.

OPTION #2: Hybrid Schedule Students learn on-campus and off-campus. This is a transitional schedule not intended to last for the entire school year. Students are arranged in cohorts, with consideration for those who have siblings and/or for who distance and transportation is a concern. Cohorts attend classes on campus and outside of classrooms, at least two full days each per week, respectively. When students are not in class, they will learn remotely, attending the same classes online. The hybrid schedule reduces the number of students per room and their proximity to others while indoors. It also allows for seamless transitions to all-remote learning for individuals or groups as needed. Students who are ill or families who are uncomfortable having their sons attend in-person classes can have the option to remain home and still have continuity of instruction. The schedule includes a “flex day” that permits students to receive additional individual help. On all days, common areas for study under adult supervision will be available to students for whom learning from home is not an option. Time will be structured for extracurricular activities on a weekly basis. The Hybrid Bell Schedule, enclosed, is generally 9:00am–2:30pm, with opportunities for after-school tutoring and additional help from teachers, as needed.

OPTION #3: Palma E-School Students learn from a distance, entirely off-campus. In compliance with any potential, and least desirable, future norms directed for public health and safety, students will learn online, with a day structure and class times very similar to the hybrid schedule. This would also be a transitional schedule and not intended to last for the entire school year.

Other Considerations

Health & Safety Schools are different from grocery stores, restaurants, and other places of business. Studies show that infection rates are greatest when people are in close proximity indoors for prolonged periods of time. This is very different from passing a stranger briefly and without speaking in a store, or dining with family or close friends in a restaurant. It is true that most young people do not appear to be as susceptible to ill effects from the virus, but they can spread it to the adults in their lives, especially older ones, who are at much greater risk. This includes teachers, staff, and other loved ones. Physical-distancing directives will be adhered to on campus, with separation between seats in classrooms and other indoor spaces. Rooms will be as ventilated as possible; some classes may be held outdoors, especially as weather and instruction permit. Passing periods will be lengthened, with planned routes for pedestrian traffic in and out of campus breezeways. Hand sanitizer stations are in each classroom and other common areas. The campus will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized daily and as recommended by the CDC. Time will be spent at the beginning of the year to orient students to health and safety procedures; other modified orientations will also occur, both for new and returning students.

Page 3: Palma School July Packet...Reopening Palma School 2020-21 School Year July 2, 2020 Dear People of Palma, We are pleased to provide you the latest draft of our plans for reopening campus

Teaching & Learning Teachers are working hard to ensure that the integrity and rigor of instruction is not compromised, with the focus of instruction on essential learning outcomes. Coverage for the sake of coverage is not as important as teaching for understanding, deep and lasting. With systematic time to prepare, teachers are working on creating engaging lessons that can be taught both in person and remotely, with varied assessments that are targeted to specific outcomes. Block periods will be divided into segments, with all-group instruction transitioning to assignments that students complete in collaboration or by working independently.

Tuition & Fees It is understandable that some may wonder if tuition will be reduced if students cannot attend in-person classes all year. We are asking those families to look beyond the moment and consider a bigger picture. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of education. Palma requires fund raising and gifts from many benefactors, which have been significantly affected by the current circumstances. Operational expenses are not reduced; PPE and materials required for deep cleaning will surpass budgeted expenses. Salaries account for the bulk of tuition dollars. Teachers, staff, and administrators are working harder than ever to adapt to ever-changing circumstances and to student/family needs. Many parents were grateful for Palma’s swift transition to structured online classes last spring when many other schools struggled to do so. We promise we will continue to deliver an unparalleled education for our students regardless of the circumstances.

We are grateful to our families for the sacrifices they make to send their sons to Palma, especially in spite of present challenges amid uncertain times. When this crisis passes, and it will come to an end, your continued support will ensure Palma is there for your family and our community’s boys of promise who become men of character. These will be men steeped in Palma’s tradition of knowledge, service and leadership for many years to come. Thank you for your support and your investment in your son’s future. There is no doubt that he will one day thank you, too. Go CHIEFTAINS!

Have a safe and happy 4th of July weekend!

Gratefully yours,

Mr. David Sullivan Mr. Rob Viarengo Mr. Chris DalmanPrincipal Vice Principal President

Revised 7/2/2020

OPTION 2 Hybrid Schedule 2020-21 School Year

Students are physically in classes one Red Day and one Gold Day each week in two cohorts to allow for physical distancing: Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday. On the other Red Day and Gold Day when a cohort is not physically in class, students attend the same classes via Zoom. This allows for safe student-to-teacher ratios that comply with six-foot social distancing norms, as an average class size of 25 Palma students per room would exceed such norms. • On Flex Day, students are not required to be on campus, either completing work independently or receiving

individual help from teachers. • This hybrid schedule is designed for easy pivoting from in-person classes to E-School, if needed, with day

structure and class start times remaining the same. • Teachers will divide block periods into segments that include whole-class instruction, collaborative work, and

independent work. During the final segment, remote participants will be dismissed to allow for a break from excessive screen time and to enable the teacher to focus on those students physically present that day.

• Attendance will be taken daily.
