Page 1 WEEK 4 January 31-February 4, 2018 The highlight class of the third week at the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) was the $132,000 Adequan ® Grand Prix CSI 3*. Victory in the “Saturday Night Lights” event went to Ireland’s Darragh Kenny on Cassini Z, owned by Bowers Cone, LLC. Saturday night’s grand prix had 45 entries over a course designed by Peter Grant of Canada. There were 16 clears, making for a very competitive and fast jump-off. The best of the bunch was Kenny on Cassini Z, an 11-year- old Oldenburg gelding by Cassini II x Capone. They went 12th in the jump- off and were chasing a time of 39.36 seconds set by Adrienne Sternlicht (USA) and Cristalline. Kenny and Cassini Z were fast from the start and never let up to finish with a winning time of 38.21 seconds. Sternlicht and Cristalline finished in third. Slipping into second place just 2/100ths of a second slower than Kenny was Jessica Springsteen (USA) on RMF Swinny du Parc, owned by Rushy Marsh Farm LLC, in 38.23 seconds. “I think the two girls’ horses have quite a big stride,” Kenny said of the jump-off. “So, one to two, definitely Adrienne got there pulling at the end. For me, it was running the whole way. I think my horse just kept running in all of the lines, so just gradually over the length of the course he made up the time. He’s very, very careful, so I don’t really have to worry about the jumps as much as the turning.” Fourth place went to Jessica Mendoza (GBR) on her own Toy Boy in 40 seconds flat, while Jordan Coyle (IRL) and Andrew Kocher’s Eristov were fifth in 40.55 seconds. It was quite a week for Kenny, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Wednesday with a win in the $35,000 Douglas Elliman Real Estate FEI 1.45m Classic with Important de Muze. But it was not smooth sailing with Cassini Z, and Kenny struggled to gel with the horse in Thursday’s qualifier. With a bridle and bit change and a smoother ride in Friday’s 1.40m class, Kenny felt more assured going into the Saturday night grand prix. “I jumped him in the WEF, and I didn’t ride great,” he explained. “The bit didn’t feel great. I was actually very frustrated about it. I jumped the next day in the 1.40m in a different bridle, and it felt good. So then I went tonight in that bridle. He’s still green sometimes – like the first jump in the jump-off, I came in quite fast, but he just jumped really high and didn’t jump really far across it, so then the seven was very long one to two so I really had to go fast there and then he was just in a really fast rhythm so I just kept going with it.” This was only the second grand prix in which Kenny has shown Cassini Z. Brought to him as a sale horse, his owner Anne Thompson stepped up to buy the horse for him just a week ago. “It was an amazing experience for us for the first grand prix with her as my owner and with this horse, and it was a fantastic result,” he said. As the owner of tonight’s winning grand prix horse, Thompson was awarded a stay at The Brazilian Court Hotel in a luxury studio. Springsteen, 26, got the ride on RMF Swinny du Parc, a 12-year-old Selle Francais mare by Berlin x Laudanum, last summer. “We kind of just clicked right away,” Hunter competition continued through week four three of the Winter Equestrian Festival with challenging courses, strong winds, and talented exhibitors. Quincy Hayes kicked off the show week in the Equine Tack and Nutritionals Ring 6 by claiming the championship title in the Equine Tack and Nutritionals Green Hunter 3’3” division aboard Paisley Park, owned by Danielle Baran, with a first and a fourth over fences and a first in the under saddle. Reserve honors went to Holly Orlando and Party Line, a 7-year- old Zangersheide gelding, owned by River Hill Farm, with a first, sixth, and seventh over fences and a second under saddle. Orlando went on to win the championship in the Equine Tack and Nutritionals Green Hunter 3’9” division in the E.R. Mische Grand Hunter ring aboard Baranus, owned by Lindsay Maxwell. The pair won first place in all four over fences classes with a fourth in the under saddle. Scott Stewart was named reserve champion with mount Luster, owned by Dr. Betsee Parker, and captured three seconds and a third over fences with a blue ribbon finish in the under saddle. Jennifer Hannan and her mount, Mindful, owned by Kensel, LLC, took to the E.R. Mische Grand Hunter ring on Thursday and captured the championship title with three firsts and a fifth over fences and a second in the under saddle in the Antares Sellier France High Performance Working Hunters. Kelley Farmer took reserve honors aboard Point Being, owned by Derby Lane, LLC, with a first, second, second, and fifth over fences and a fourth in the under saddle. The Adequan ® Amateur Owner Hunter 18-35 3’3” championship win went to Lindsay Maxwell and her mount, Belgravia. The duo took two out of the four first place ribbons over fences and a seventh under saddle. Katherine Oberkircher and and her own Bozeman were crowned reserve champions with a second under saddle and a second and third over fences. The Rost Arena featured an impressive performance by Elizabeth Boyd and Gratis, owned by Karen Lackinger, as they claimed the championship title in the Young Hunter 3’3” division with four blue ribbons over fences and a second on the flat. Haylie Rolfe and her mount, Bernoulli, were third under saddle with a second and three thirds over fences for the reserve champion ribbon. Competition in rings 11 and 12 remained fierce throughout the week. John Ehrhart captured both champion and reserve honors in the USHJA Hunter 2’3” division aboard Destiny, owned by Phoebe Backman, and Cayero, owned by John & Stephanie Ingram, LLC. Ehrhart and Destiny were champions with a second under saddle and a second, second, third, and fifth over fences. Ehrhart, aboard Cayero, was reserve champion with a first, first, fifth, and sixth in the division’s jumping classes. Highlights of WEF 3 included a championship win by Hallie Grimes, aboard Inquisitive, a 10-year-old gelding owned by Can We Keep It?, LLC, in the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under division with a second on the flat and a first, first, fifth, and eighth over fences. Reserve honors went to Mimi Gochman aboard Evermore, owned by Gochman Sport Horses, LLC, with a first and three thirds over fences. Hunter competition will continue into WEF 4 on Wednesday, January 31. she said. “I feel really comfortable with her. She’s so naturally fast. She’s kind of easy to do in these jump-offs.”

Along with RMF Swinny du Parc, Springsteen has the ride on RMF Zecilie for Rushy Marsh Farm, noting, “They kind of really pull me, and I like that feeling, especially when you’re jumping these big classes. They’re both really sweet, really brave, confident, scopey, and really careful, so I’m excited.”

Sternlicht made the crowd cheer when she took an unusual path from fence two in a rollback to fence three, the Adequan® wall. She and Cristalline, a 10-year-old Bavarian Warmblood mare by Cristallo 1 x Caretello B, jumped a hedge set up to direct riders around a gazebo.

She and her trainer, Olympic team gold medalist McLain Ward, decided they “had to get a bit creative,” knowing that Cristalline does not have the same foot speed and is loftier in the air than others in the stacked jump-off field.

“It was exciting for me too,” said the 24-year-old with a smile. “We actually didn’t plan that when we walked. McLain told me that at two Olympics, he should have jumped the hedge and didn’t, so surely I could risk it in a three star grand prix. So I did! It was a unique experience for me and for my horse. She’s super brave. She actually responded better than I anticipated. We have to keep learning together.”

Allyn Mann, Director of Strategic Partnerships for Adequan®, was thrilled to represent the sponsor at such an exciting event.

“What I love about this equestrian sport is that it rarely discriminates,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how old you are or how young you are, whether you’re a man or a woman; if you have a beautiful relationship with your horse, all things are possible. I think we saw that tonight.

“We’re just really blessed to be a part of this whole equestrian community,” Mann continued. “Whether it’s dressage, whether it’s jumping or polo or eventing – we really want to try to give back to the sport to really make these nights possible.

OWNER OF JUST FUR FUNMona Straub is the founder, designer and brains behind Just Fur Fun®. After an extensive career in sales and marketing for For-tune 500 companies, Ms. Straub switched gears and redirected her life to another path; one that would fulfill her love of animals and utilize her business savvy. Always looking for ways to express herself where just jewelry alone wouldn’t do, she came up with the idea to dress-up her dogs, cats and horses in something different, yet elegant, that would be an expression of her…and Just Fur Fun® was born!

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT IT IS YOU SELL HERE AT THE HORSE SHOW? This is my fourth season at WEF. Just Fur Fun® is everything for your pet, your dog, from both ends of the leash. I

make hand beaded collars, leashes, matching belts, spurs, and browbands, as well as bracelets, so that you can all bling out together. I also make a whole assortment and array of other goodies for dogs - everything from sweatshirts with “Dog as my zen,” to little skull and crossbones sweaters. You name it, I’ve got it!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING AT WEF? It’s amazing to be here. When people ask what I do all day long, I say I get to play with dogs, talk to people about their

dogs, watch the horses, be around the horses, and that I get to be around the equestrians and horse people that I love so much. I always say that I really don’t work. Saturday nights at WEF, yes, it’s a long day on a Saturday for a vendor, but to get to watch your WEF Saturday Night Lights class is amazing. All day long I get to watch the rings go and talk to the riders about their rides and about who is winning and who is losing. It’s wonderful to be here.

WHEN YOU ARE NOT AT THE SHOW, WHAT CAN WE FIND YOU DOING?Playing with my five dachshunds or being involved with the women in the pet industry. I’m also very involved with the Florida Women’s Business Center and am on the board of the Dachshund Rescue of South Florida. I work with the Broward County’s Humane Society and other rescues too, so I keep busy.

HOW DID YOU END UP AT WEF?I ended up at WEF because my products were founded originally in the equestrian world. Everything I sell is on harnessed leather because the first product I ever created was a browband for my horse. After that, I decided to go into the pet industry as well. I came to WEF to put both worlds, and things that I love, together. In the dog world I’m one in a million, but in the horse world I’m not. It amazed me that in all these years no one actually put up a booth at a horse show that catered to dogs. That is something very special about WEF. I also do a lot of other horse shows now too, such as The Devon Horse Show and some of the Indoor shows in the fall. This year, I will probably do the FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH HORSE PEOPLE AS CLIENTELE?Horse people have a love for their animals, whether it is the horse, or the dogs, or whatever else. One of the greatest parts about being here, and about in-teracting with them on this level, is that they are lovers of other people and they love being together with their animals. It’s like a big family and community.
