How GREAT was the Great War?

Section One: Propaganda

To achieve Level 5:

You have selected examples of British WW1 recruitment posters.

Check that you have the right war!

Please add your own notes to explain why these posters are

examples of propaganda.

Why might they be considered misleading?

To achieve Level 6:

There was more to WW1 propaganda than recruitment posters.

For example, how can you tell that this photograph was staged?

Your challenge is to explore a range of different types of propaganda used in WW1, from music to the invention of Tommy Atkins.

To achieve Level 7:

At this level the challenge is to compare the propaganda techniques used in Britain during WW1 with another country or another time period.

Please feel free to select a country or time period of your choice, but remember to explain the similarities and differences

Section two: Trench Warfare

To achieve Level 5:

You have selected a range of sources to illustrate life in the trenches. You could use poems; paintings; photographs and letters, for example.

However, you must annotate the sources to show your understanding. Please mention a battle and at least one real person.

To achieve Level 6:

Working at this level, you will realise that WW1 was not only fought in the trenches. People had diverse experiences during the war.

You need to consider how the war affected different people in different ways. You could look at the role of the women; the impact of the Empire or different theatres of war, such as at sea or in the air.

To achieve Level 7:

At this level the challenge is to compare the experience of war in Britain during WW1 with another country or another time period.

You could look at one of the following: types of weapons; turning points in the war; the Home Front; casualty figures or the impact on popular culture.
