Looking at these two men who came to the temple to pray, Jesus poses a question for us to understand about their intention of prayer. The Pharisee enters the Lords house in order to give thanks to God for all that he has and is, which is good, then he twists the prayer into a judgment. The Pharisee does what politicians do, spin the story into something that is no longer recognizable as truth. He gives thanks, but then compares all the good he has, as his own becoming superior to others. This Pharisee essentially makes his relationship and salvation dependent upon his posi-tion in society. In normal human situations, a relationship which is based upon one's status in society is understood as hollow and shallow. The second man, the sinner which we all are, humbly recognizes the truth and exposes that truth, regardless of how ugly it is to God. Such relationships, in human terms, are considered deep and of quality, to have a friendship where no secretes are held. Of course do not misunderstand, exposing one's self to God in humility does not mean that the tax collector should return home justified and then continue to commit sin. A deep and honest relationship with God and with oth-ers is always challenging. A relationship which does not challenge a person to improve has no depth either. The Gos-pel makes the point that we are to deepen our relationship with God by humbly exposing the truth of ourselves in prayer and through penance. And by extension, in allowing for a deep connection with our Lord, we are to focus our-selves on the challenge to choose sanctity out of and for Jesus Christ, our Lord and savior.
On another note, our civil duty to vote in the primaries, and later in the elections, is approaching, and I am sure many of us are asking who should I support and which propositions should be held. Well the answer is not easy, however, there is a way to find the right answer. The right answer comes from our “Conscience”. However, in order for our “Conscience” to make a right decision for which we will follow, it must be properly “formed”. In addition, we have an obligation and responsibility to “form” our conscience correctly.
Alternatively, to make a decision with an uninformed conscience can be disastrous for us both spiritually and materially in the world. Each of our votes are critically important for the future of our City, State, and Nation. I sug-gest an easy-to-remember method of “forming” one’s conscience called STOP.
S – Study. Gather all available facts, data, and information about the topic in question and know the issue both the positives and negatives. Find out what the Church teaches on the subject: is it a question of evil? What advice do the experts provide? T – Think. God has given us thinking brains to be used in measuring the information collected against common sense and the natural order of life. If married, consult with your spouse whom you should arrive at a mutual agreement with respect to every important decision. Discuss the issue with family and believers in the faith. More minds on an issue is always better than one. O – Other’s Experiences. Look to understand the wisdom others can reveal with their experience especially if they have a different conclusion. Often the approach of others who differ with us can point out blind spots in our own rationalizations and strength our understanding of the issue. Don’t listen to only those to whom you agree with and never be afraid of opposition. P – Pray. Without consulting God in our decisions we will certainly go afoul. In prayer, the Lord helps us to calm our mind and heart to see clearly the situation. Provide moments for you to speak to Christ and to listen so that you can notice the small whisper of the Lord stirring our hearts in an uneasiness or peace towards your emerging decision.
It is our responsibility to “inform” our conscience and make a decision. An uninformed conscience will make erroneous decisions and cause great harm. In following the procedure outlined we provide the wisdom and tools needed to make good decisions for the Glory of God. We are all called each day to give ourselves over to God’s work. Show your devotion to your heavenly Father by know-ing His Will and making yourselves available to those tasks set before you, even if difficult. In Christ, Fr. Luke Jauregui

Al mirar a estos dos hombres que vinieron al templo a orar, Jesús plantea una pregunta para que la compren-
damos sobre su intención de orar. El fariseo entra a la casa del Señor para dar gracias a Dios por todo lo que tiene y es, lo cual es bueno, luego tuerce la oración en un juicio. El fariseo hace lo que hacen los políticos, convertir la historia en algo que ya no es reconocible como verdad. Da gracias, pero luego compara todo lo bueno que tiene, ya que lo del se vuelve superior a los demás. Este fariseo esencialmente hace que su relación y salvación dependan de su posición en la sociedad. En situaciones humanas normales, una relación que se basa en el estado de uno en la sociedad se en-tiende como hueca y superficial. El segundo hombre, el pecador que todos somos, reconoce humildemente la verdad y expone esa verdad, independientemente de lo feo que sea para Dios. Tales relaciones, en términos humanos, se consideran profundas y de calidad, para tener una amistad donde no se guardan secretos. Por supuesto, no malinterpreten, exponerse a Dios con humildad no significa que el recaudador de impuestos deba regresar a casa justificado y luego continuar cometiendo pecado. Una relación profunda y honesta con Dios y con los demás siempre es un desafío. Una relación que no desafía a una persona a mejorar tampoco tiene profundidad. El Evangelio señala que debemos profundizar nuestra relación con Dios al exponer humildemente la verdad de nosotros mismos en la oración y la penitencia. Y por extensión, al permitir una conexión profunda con nuestro Señor, debemos enfocarnos en el desafío de elegir la santidad de y para Jesucristo, nuestro Señor y Salvador. En otra nota, nuestro deber civil de votar en las primarias, y más tarde en las elecciones, se está acercando, y estoy seguro de que muchos de nosotros estamos preguntando a quién debo apoyar y qué proposiciones deben re-alizarse. Bueno, la respuesta no es fácil, sin embargo, hay una manera de encontrar la respuesta correcta. La respuesta correcta proviene de nuestra "conciencia". Sin embargo, para que nuestra "Conciencia" tome una decisión correcta para lo que seguiremos, debe estar debidamente "formada". Dios nos ha dado cerebros pensantes para usar en la medición de la información recopilada contra el sentido común y el orden natural de la vida. Si estás casado(a), consulta con tu cónyuge con quien debes llegar a un acuerdo mutuo con respecto a cada decisión importante. Discuta el tema con la familia y los creyentes en la fe. Más mentes sobre un tema siempre es mejor que uno. O - Experiencias de Otros. Intenta comprender la sabiduría que otros pueden revelar con su experiencia, especialmente si tienen una conclusión diferente. A menudo, el enfoque de otros que difieren de nosotros puede señalar puntos ciegos en nuestras propias racionalizaciones y fortalecer nuestra comprensión del problema. Did you know that we each receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit in our baptism and Confirmation? Must people go through life not really tapping into the power of these gifts. This seminar will teach us what those gifts are and how we can begin to tap into
their power so that we can deal effectively with the trials in our life, get more from the Sacraments, and grow closer to God. Please come for this powerful, life-changing event. The spirit-filled music of Donna Lee will help us to surrender our hearts. Cost is $20 which includes continental breakfast and a full lunch. Registration required.
