This is a story worth re-calling because of the indi-viduals involved and the is-sues they faced. The centralcharacters included JohnPrice, a fugitive slave fromKentucky, two abolitionistswho defied federal law andJudge Joseph Swan, reveredboth by the public and col-leagues, who ultimately castthe deciding vote.
When Price crossed theriver into Ohio in 1856, hemade his way to Oberlin, long considered a safe ha-ven for runaway slaves.Still, runaways always re-mained on the lookout. TheFugitive Slave Act of 1850allowed bounty hunters tocapture slaves anywhere inthe United States and returnthem to their captors in theSouth. The law also calledfor the arrest of those whointerfered with a slave cap-ture and required federal
marshals to assist in round-ing up runaways.
Price enjoyed freedomfor almost two years inOberlin before he was takenby two Southern slavecatchers and a federal mar-shal. Price was held prisonerin a hotel room in nearbyWellington. Word of his ab-duction quickly spreadthrough the communitiesand a crowd of more than350 white and black aboli-tionists gathered outside thehotel calling for his release. In the tense atmosphere, fu-eled by chaos, Price escapedand was taken to a safehouse to hide. He eventuallyfound true freedom inCanada.
In the wake of the inci-dent 37 abolitionists werearrested and charged withviolating the Fugitive SlaveAct. Simeon Bushnell andCharles Langston were thefirst to be tried in federal

serve the community in apositive way, Freely Freelyis a perfect fit.
Freely Freely is a non-profit, all volunteer commu-nity outreach organizationthat recycles your donateditems like quality furniture, appliances and more.
These items are offeredto the working poor to helpthem bridge a gap in theirlives.
“We need volunteerswith a passion for what weare doing, a passion for theworking poor who are strug-gling with the economy, people who are seniors ormilitary families,” reportsBarb Klingshirn, Freely
Freely, Freely: A Call to Service for Men and Women
Freely founder. “Where dothese people go for helpwhen they have high medi-cal bills and their refrigera-tor breaks?”
Freely Freely offers anhonest grass-roots, Chris-
tian based resource thatnever sells, but gives forfree.
Freely Freely needshelp, too.
“What we need aremen. Hopefully 9 or 10 menfrom the community willcome forward to volunteeron Saturdays and make acommitment to work into aSaturday rotation to pick updonated furniture and appli-ances. This would require aSaturday once every monthor six weeks. Individuals orservice groups would beperfect volunteers,” saidBarb.
Also needed are thosewho might be able to spon-sor the ministry financially.Their huge warehouse, truckrental, van, insurance andadvertising come with a lotof expense. While they haveno paid employees, spon-sorship would be welcome.
Please consider a cash do-nation or think about a spon-sorship that will impact yourcommunity! Phone is (440)937-3999.
The impact in the com-munity is dramatic. Everyweek, Freely Freely allowsfamilies to make it whilethey get back on their feetworking through hardship, medical bills and financialchallenges. Yet, FreelyFreely is not an entitlementprogram. It is for the work-ing poor – those needing tobridge the gap as they getback on their feet.
Last fall, The Villagerran a story of a west sidefamily with two girls who
had cancer. Faced withoverwhelming medical billsand the loss of a home,Freely Freely allowed thisfamily to find quality do-nated furniture at its Ware-house for their downsizedapartment as they continuedto keep the faith. The NorthRidgeville Knights of Co-lumbus read about theirstory and donated a refrig-erator. Groups to pick updonations, offer sponsor-ship, and individuals to dolikewise are what they need.

court in Cleveland. Bothmen were found guilty.
Lawyers for the twomen filed a writ of habeascorpus in the Supreme Courtof Ohio. They arguedBushnell and Langston wereimprisoned illegally be-cause the fugitive slave lawwas unconstitutional. In es-sence, they asked a statecourt to take extraordinaryaction and strike down afederal law.
On the morning of May25, the Supreme Court jus-tices convened their hear-ing. The rescuers pressedthe point that the momentescaped slaves stepped intoOhio, they were free menand women because Ohiodid not recognize slavery.Attorneys for the govern-ment argued the FugitiveSlave Act was the law of theland that had been upheld byother courts.
Following the hearing, the justices voted: two touphold the federal convic-tion and two to release therescuers, Bushnell and
Langston. The decision wasup to Chief Judge Swan, widely recognized as a com-mitted abolitionist. The casepresented him with awrenching choice: followhis heart as an opponent ofslavery or follow the law hewas sworn to uphold.
It was a personal di-lemma that he answered ina most personal style in hismajority opinion: “If I didit, and were prosecuted ,condemned, andimprisoned…and were thenpermitted to pronouncejudgment in my own case, Itrust I should have the moralcourage to say, before Godand the country, as I am nowcompelled to say, under thesolemn duties of a judge, bound by my official oath tosustain the supremacy of theconstitution and the law,‘The prisoner must be re-manded.’”
With his vote, Swan re-fused to overturn the federallaw. As a result, the Oberlinrescuers spent almost 90days in jail. He paid a steep
price for his decision. Hewas denied renomination tothe court and he resigned inNovember.

As a former elementaryand high school teacher, anda teacher of fellow judges atthe Ohio and national judicialcolleges, Justice Lanzinger iscommitted to increasingknowledge and understandingof the judiciary. The recent marketvolatility has left a lot ofpeople wondering what isnext for equities. While fu-ture market movements areunknown, one thing weknow for sure is that theS&P 500 has now experi-enced its first correctionsince it started a powerfulrally off of the March 2009lows. A market correctionis a decline of at least 10%,but not greater than 20%.Market corrections arefairly typical events that oc-cur, on average, about oncea year.
According to RichardCripps, Chief InvestmentOfficer withEquityCompass Strategies(a division of StifelNicolaus), about two-thirdsof market corrections since1928 have presented goodbuying opportunities, as themarket indices recoveredfrom their decline, on aver-age, in about two months. Inour current situation, wehave seen the S&P 500 rallygreater than 75% off of thebottom over the last 15

months. This type of rallycan leave the market vulner-able to a pullback. With theongoing debt concerns inGreece specifically, and ashaky European economy ingeneral, there are certainlyexplanations available forthis current correction.
While there are reasonsfor concern, we have seennumerous companies meet, and in many cases beat, earnings expectations in thefirst quarter of 2010. More-over, consensus earningsestimates for the next yearhave increased as well. Ri-chard Cripps points out thatthe consensus forecast forthe S&P 500 earnings in thenext 12 months is about$88, which is a 42% in-crease from the $62 forecastin April 2009. In my opin-ion, this is an indication ofan economy that is in recov-ery mode.
Unfortunately forpeople who own stocks, sometimes market correc-tions turn into bear markets.A bear market, which is a

market that has a declineof 20% or greater, occurson average about onceevery 4 years. These mar-kets often occur when wesee earnings deterioratingand an economy slowing- two conditions that, inmy opinion, are the exactopposite of our currentsituation. We are lessthan a year-and-a-half re-moved from the last bear
market, which remains pain-fully clear in the mind ofinvestors. While it is pos-sible for the economy to ex-perience a rare double diprecession, and the market tomove into bear territory, itis in my opinion more likelythat this is just a correctionafter a substantial rally.
If we see the deteriora-tion of earnings, my viewmay change, but under cur-
rent circumstances, I believewe are experiencing a cor-rection, which is commonplace in the equity markets.

Just Ducky….. Getting ready to launch theGreat Duck Race at the Lake Erie Nature andScience Center last were the three lead spon-sors. Every was just ducky as Cahoon Creekwas running rapidly and the Duck Race broughtlots of excitement.
Nothing like a great day inJune, an animal balloonand a ride on dad’s shoul-ders to bring out the smilesat LENSC last weekend.
“Onward my noblecountrymen!” cried theleader of the rebellion as heled his comrades through thegreat and treacherous gorgeof Porter’s Creek, “Nothingcan stop us now!”
The Great Duck Race isan annual charity event at theLake Erie Nature and Sci-ence Center to raise moneyfor the center. Much of whatthe center does is “donationdriven”, including things likeits animal rehab program anddisplay animals. While thenature center is in the Cleve-land MetroParks, they’re notactually part of theMetroParks - they don’t re-ceive any money from themand in fact lease the property.LENSC is a non-profit orga-nization that does receivesome government fundingfor things such as some edu-cational programs, but mostsupport comes from dona-tions from the public.
Duck & Run!....Onward Noble Countrymen!
Hundreds of yellow duckies take the plunge!
The Great Duck Race isone of LENSC’s biggestfund raisers of the year. It’spart of their annual “FamilyFun Day” and is always agreat success. This year,
heavy rains the night beforemade for a rapid Duck Raceand a packed house.
The Lake Erie Nature &Science Center is a veryunique facility with cool ani-
mal displays...much like a small zoo, except that it’s all “local” wildlife (lo-cal meaning here in Ohio). Addition-ally, they also are one of only twoplaces in Northern Ohio that does ani-mal rehab. Someone finds an injuredbird or raccoon or other critter and theybring it to LENSE. They treat the inju-ries and care for the animal and, hope-fully, return it to the wild once its inju-
ries have healed. They also have a number of edu-cational programs for grade school students. Ontop of all of, they also have host Schuele Plan-etarium... one of the nicer ones in the area! LENSCis a multi-faceted facility to say the least!
Finally, there is a great sports café for the whole family!Bullfrogs in North Ridgeville is perfect for the big

An open letter to our customers and friends:
Wouldn’t you love to go to sleep at night knowing the home of your dreams would be waiting for you in the
morning? Thanks to Ohio Family Realty’s “Create Your Own Search”, now you can!
Ohio Family Realty launched their new state of the art website – OhioFamilyRealty.com. Voted the Best Real
Estate Website in Ohio, if offers many features to make the home buying process a success; the “Create Your Own
Search” being one of them.
“Create Your Own Search” is an exclusive feature to Ohio Family Realty’s website. Without having to submit any
personal information, such as name, address, or phone number, a person enters their search criteria for their
desired home just one time. After this information is entered, sit back and relax while your home finds you. You
can change your search criteria at any time. Based on the criteria selected, the computer will search for matching
homes for four months.
Traditional real estate websites simply do not offer the same unique search criteria that the “Create Your Own
Search” does. With this custom search, a broad range of criteria can be chosen; from finished basement or garage
size, to first floor master bedroom, brick exterior, or school district. If a house comes up that you do not like,
simply delete it. When you find a home that you like, call Ohio Family Realty to make arrangements to see it.
When you do find your dream home, Ohio Family Realty’s “Lifetime Realtor Program” is another ground-breaking
feature that you cannot pass up! “Through the ‘Lifetime Realtor Program’, after we represent a buyer on a
purchase, we will sell that house without charging a commission – whether they decide to sell in ten months or
ten years. More importantly, if you are struggling to sell your old house, we will not charge you a commission on
that house either,” explains Ohio Family Realty Broker, Mike DeAnna.
There has never been a better time to find the house you have always wanted. Your dream home is waiting! Let
OhioFamilyRealty.com help you begin the search today!
Sincerely,
Michael J. DeAnna, Broker
